Minnies Surgery

Minnie Bear was taken to the emergency room at the UC Davis Vet hospital Sunday January 25th at 5pm because she had not eaten since Friday night January 23rd, and she was vomiting everything including water. On Friday evening, we gave her a bone to lick on, but when we returned, she has somehow chewed the bone down and half of it was gone! By Sat. morning, she had vomited and pooed everywhere poor baby. She didn't eat or drink again. She just laid around, not whining or whimpering, no crying or anything, so we didn't really know what was wrong. We just thought she got a bug from the bone. When Sunday rolled around, she wasn't doing any better. Aunt Sally convinced us to take her to the emergency room.

At 5pm we still weren't convinced that she needed an emergency room visit, but we tried to give her her favorite snack and she wouldn't eat it, so we decided to go to the emergency room just for peace of mind.

When we got there, the news got worse and worse and worse. At first, they thought she might have just scraped her throat with the bone pieces, and maybe a soothing agent would help. At this point, we had the option to confirm this with Xrays ($300) or take the soothing agent ($10) and go home. We decided to do the xrays (we love our bear). The Xrays showed two blockages on her intestines to which they said she needed emergency surgery to remove. They said if we had waited until the morning, she very well could have been dead. They told us that if the blockages were complete, that her intestines would have begun dying already, and the dead parts would have to be removed. Immediately before surgery, they did an ultra sound to get a better idea of where the blockages were and how severe the situation was at each point. They told us it looked like there was fluid surrounding her intestines indicating that the bone could have ripped a hole in her intestines causing them to leak into her abdomen. This, they said, might cause pancreatitis from which many dogs die. This could also lead to bacterial infections, etc etc. Needless to say, we weren't sure she would survive through recovery.

At 11:36, our surgeon called and said that the situation was much better than they thought. The first blockage wasn't a blockage at all, it was water that Dave was giving Minnie bear before we went to the vet, and it looked like a blockage in the ultrasound b/c of how the intestines were wound up there. The second blockage was built up bone pieces gathering at the junction between the small and large intestines (but still in the small). The surgeon made an incision to remove the blockage, and then stitched her back up. No leakage, no tears, no pancreatitis or bacterial infections, no removal of intestines, etc etc. He said she's already awake from anesthesia and recovering very well. WHEW! Dave and I are SOOO relieved! We were terrified. They even said she might be able to come home tomorrow night if she starts eating. They originally told us she'd have to stay 3 days for monitoring.

What a terrible weekend for our poor bear. We are very very very relieved.

Whew,

Tami Joy & Dave Schlaws

Update: It is Saturday Jan 31 and Minnie is doing MUCH better. She is slowly returning to normal. She does very good with her collar on, but she is annoyed she cant get under the bed (her favorite and safest spot ever).
