Wedding Ring Deflects Robber's Bullet, Saves Mississippi Store Owner's Life, Police Say
Sunday , December 02, 2007
JACKSON, Mississippi —
Police say a Mississippi man's wedding band deflected a bullet and probably saved his life. Two men walked into Donnie Register's shop at The Antique Market in Jackson on Saturday and asked to see a coin collection, police Sgt. Jeffery Scott said.
When Register retrieved the collection, one of the men pulled a gun and demanded money. A shot was fired as Register threw up his left hand, and his wedding ring deflected the bullet, police said.
"The bullet managed to go through two of his fingers without severing the bone," said his wife, Darlene Register. "A part of the bullet broke off and is in his middle finger. The other part is in his neck, lodged in the muscle tissue. But it's not life-threatening."
She said she gives God all the credit.
Police were searching for the robbers, who Scott said "stole a substantial amount of cash."

Broadway
Goo Goo Dolls
Broadway's dark tonight
A little bit weaker than you used to be
Broadway's dark tonight
See the young man sittin' in the old man's bar
Waitin' for his turn to die
The cowboy kills the rock star
And Friday night's gone too far
The dim light hides the years
On all the faded girls
Forgotten but not gone
You drink it off your mind
You talk about the world like it's someplace that you've been
You see, you'd love to run home, but you know you ain't got one
Cuz you're livin' in a world that you're best forgotten, around here
Broadway's dark tonight
A little bit weaker than you used to be
Broadway's dark tonight
See the young man sittin' in the old man's bar
Waitin' for his turn to die
You choke down all your anger
Forget your only son
You pray to statues when you sober up for fun
Your anger don't impress me
The world slapped in your face
It always rains like hell on the loser's day parade
You see, you'd love to run home, but you know you ain't got one
Cuz you're livin' in a world that you're best forgotten
When you're thinkin' you're a joke and nobody's gonna listen
To the one small point I know they've been missing around here
Broadway's dark tonight
A little bit weaker than you used to be
Broadway's dark tonight
See the young man sittin' in the old man's bar
Waitin' for his turn to die
You see, you'd love to run home, but you know you ain't got one
Cuz you're livin' in a world that you're best forgotten
When you're thinkin' you're a joke and nobody's gonna listen
To the one small point I know they've been missing around here
Round here, yeah
Broadway's dark tonight
A little bit weaker than you used to be
Broadway's dark tonight
See the young man sittin' in the old man's bar
Waitin' for his turn to die

What is up with Fresh 102.7?
This radio station, in the NY area, bills itself as playing "today's fresh music". So why am I hearing songs from 1993? Free Fallin' by Tom Petty, La Isla Bonita by Madonna? Edwin McCain, circa 1999?
If you call that fresh, I'm scared to see what is in your refrigerator.

Race for the Cure
Komen for the Cure is the world's largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures.
This was my first time participating in an event like this. There were thousands of runners; men, women and children. Many people had pink tags with the names of people they were running in honor or in memory of. I was tearing up reading some of them; wives, mothers. There were many teams running to support a friend or relative with breast cancer. It was such an inspirational event. I was emotionally overwhelmed. All survivors wore special pink t-shirts and received pink leis and pink carnations at the end. There were also many special gifts from the vendors just for survivors.
The energy and vibe during the run was terrific - everyone was smiling and cheering all throughout. All the volunteers and organizers were making sure everything ran smoothly.
It was especially touching to see so many breast cancer survivors running.
I was also pleasantly surprised at the amazing support I received from my family and friends. I raised over $900!
It was a really wonderful event and I hope to participate again!

Another Rainy Day In New York City
Chicago
Another rainy day in new york city
Softly sweet, so silently it falls
As crosstown traffic crawls
Memories in my way in new york city
Tender, tough, too tragic to be true
And nothing i can do
City workers cheer
The taxis disappear
Another rainy day in new york city
Another spacey stay in new york city
High up in an overpriced hotel
The view is really swell
Windy, wet and gray in new york city
No one here i really want to see
Old friends and family
So suddenly serene
The air is fresh and clean
Another rainy day in new york city
It's another rainy day
Just a rainy, rainy day
It's another rainy day
Just a rainy, rainy day

Jewish Heritage Month
THE WHITE HOUSE
Office of the Press Secretary
For Immediate Release April 30, 2007
JEWISH AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH, 2007
- - - - - - -
BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
A PROCLAMATION
The faith and hard work of Jewish Americans have played an integral role in shaping the cultural fabric of America. During Jewish American Heritage Month, we celebrate the vital contributions of Jewish Americans to our Nation.
Throughout our history, Jewish Americans have contributed to the strength of our country and the preservation of our values. The talent and imagination of these citizens have helped our Nation prosper, and their efforts continue to remind us of America's gift of religious freedom and the blessings of God's steadfast love. Jewish Americans have worked to promote civil rights and build bridges of mutual understanding among the world's religions. Their deep commitment to faith and strong ties to family enrich our country and set a positive example for others.
This month is also a time to recognize the sacrifices of Jewish Americans who serve our Nation in the Armed Forces. These brave men and women are dedicated to freedom's cause, and all those who live in freedom live in their debt.
Jewish American Heritage Month is an opportunity to honor the accomplishments of Jewish-American citizens and to remember that our Nation is a melting pot of cultures. I join all Americans in celebrating the rich Jewish heritage and the many ways they contribute to a bright future for our country.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America , by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States , do hereby
proclaim May 2007 as Jewish American Heritage Month. I call upon all Americans to observe this month with appropriate programs and activities to honor Jewish Americans across the country.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this thirtieth day of April, in the year of our Lord two thousand seven, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-first.
GEORGE W. BUSH
I found some stuff going on in NY here and in Washington, DC here. Apparently 2006 was the first observance of this event, which I guess is why I never heard of it.

It's only 8 AM and it's already one of those days...
I had to be at work earlier than usual today so I set my alarm for 5 AM. As I was on the way out the door, I realized that I couldn't find my MetroCard. OK, I can buy another one at the bodega near the bus stop. Walk out the door and see that it snowed last night so I have to clear off my car. Drive to the bus stop, run to the bodega, they only take cash for the metrocards. Thank goodness I had cash on me, but we get money deducted pre-tax for metrocards in the form of a Visa card so I couldn't use that. Of course, I missed the 6:10 express bus so I had to wait (sans gloves by the way) for the regular bus and then take the train. While I was on the train I realized that I had worn a different coat on Friday (because it was so cold) and my metrocard was probably in the pocket.
I am usually so super organized that all of this combined just threw me for a loop. Hope the rest of my day goes a little better. It's sunny, so that is a positive! Maybe I will go buy some new gloves during my lunch break.

Cold Enough For Ya?
It was 9 degrees outside when I woke up this morning and the "real feel" temp (I just love that term! I know it just means wind chill) was something like -13. Waiting for the bus was no picnic! It doesn't get this cold in Baltimore! Why did I move here again?
Shabbat Shalom, ya'll and stay warm! As they said on the radio this morning, "Bundle up! Or just get on a flight to Aruba" ;-)

Talk About A Sports Fan
PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. — Nine months pregnant and married to a fervent Bears fan with tickets to Sunday's NFC Championship game, Colleen Pavelka didn't want to risk going into labor during the game against the New Orleans Saints. Due to give birth on Monday, Pavelka's doctor told her Friday she could induce labor early. She opted for the Friday delivery.
"I thought, how could (Mark) miss this one opportunity that he might never have again in his life?" said Pavelka, 28, from the southwestern Chicago suburb of Homer Glen.
At 10:45 p.m. Friday, Mark Patrick Pavelka was born at Palos Community Hospital after close to six hours of labor.
While her husband watched the Bears play the New Orleans Saints at Soldier Field Sunday, Colleen planned to watch in the hospital with the baby wrapped in a Bears blanket _ a Christmas gift from his grandmother.
The couple named Mark after his father, who wore a "Monsters of the Midway" shirt during the delivery.
"If he wasn't born by Sunday and the Bears won, I would have named him Rex," after Bears quarterback Rex Grossman, joked Mark Pavelka, 28.
Mark is the couple's second son.

Officials trace mystery smell to NJ
"We think it emanates somewhere between Secaucus and Jersey City," said Charles Sturcken, a spokesman for the New York City Department of Environmental Protection.
We always say that you can smell NJ as soon as you cross into the state. I guess today the smell drifted into NYC.

So the Mayor knows it all?
"It may just be an unpleasant smell, but at this point we don't know anymore than that," New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said at a press conference Monday. "One thing we are very confident of is it is not dangerous, but how long and what the sources are, we just don't know."
If they don't know what it is, how does he know it's not dangerous? I wasn't taking any chances.

New Year's Day
Treppenwitz had a really nice post today, titled "A year of wine... not just bubbles." I really liked that line. I hope that I and all my readers have a year of substance, of importance. (and of course I would probably be remiss if I didn't put a bracha in there, right? Wine of the chupah...) :)
Hope that everyone who has a day off today enjoys it, and for those of you in the NY area--stay dry!
