Trip to Door County, Wisconsin

Door County, Wisconsin:
The beautiful, clear waters of lake Michigan, the fresh, cool air, the gentle green bluffs, the historic buildings, the artsy and quaint towns, and most of all, the time with my precious family made for a wonderful mid-September vacation.
Here are some of our highlights:

We camped for three nights, with the boys sleeping in one tent and Jason, Audrey and I in another. Night one was cold. Night two we had raccoons visit our camp. I don't enjoy showering with spiders, but other than that camping was great. We splurged and spent our last two nights at an inn.
Jason making bacon in the morning...this is why I love camping.

The boys enjoying some of the homemade granola I brought. It was delicious. Unfortunately, we only enjoyed it that first morning because a raccoon took off with it on night two. Another raccoon wanted it also and they started fighting for it. Have you ever heard raccoons fight? It is the most awful sound. I started thinking of the movie "I am Legend" and didn't sleep the rest of that night.

Awww, cute baby in a tent.

Beautiful bluffs and clear waters. We had PERFECT weather the entire time. Sunny, with a high of 70.

James enjoying a carmel apple

The boys had a ton of fun on the tire swing. So much fun that they both threw up after an hour of playing on it.

Audrey got toted everywhere.

I love this picture of Nathan swinging

The boys skipping stones on Lake Michigan

It's a little dark, but it's our only family photo on the trip

This is probably my favorite photo of the trip. I love the lighting. We had just finished up a difficult 2 mile hike and Nathan was enjoying the view. The boys hiked about 10 miles during our trip, which I think is pretty good for 4 year olds!

Nathan was really proud after this hike!

Audrey seems to enjoy hiking too and was super smiley and even laughing afterwords

It almost looks like Hawaii here

The boys having pancake breakfast. Another reason I love camping. We had great breakfasts. Plus we had S'mores every night. And for dinners we had soups. I love hot soups while camping in cool weather.

A Stavekirke! Just like in Norway! Door County reminded us a lot of Norway because it was settled by Scandinavians

We visited and Ostrich farm. They had a bizarre assortment of animals--besides bunnies, goats, cows, llamas, chickens, donkeys, and horses, they also a camel, a BEAR(!), and a water buffalo.

The boys did well on the hikes, but they did get tired--at least mentally. We had to do some coaxing, and occasionally some carrying. Here I am doing double duty. It wasn't too bad as they somehow balanced eachother out.

I loved this sculpture. Can you tell what it is? Rock a-bye baby!

We visited this lighthouse, built in 1837 and beautifully restored

This was the view from the top

Isn't he handsome with our baby girl in his arms?

Taking another free ride

The waters of Lake Michigan were so clear up here. This picture was taken from about 200 feet above. It's hard to believe this is the same lake that borders Chicago! We were just there today and I looked at the water and it was totally opaque!

Making an ice-cream stop. We had two ice-cream stops, and while good, we had to agree that the best ice cream is still found in the Chicago 'burbs: Oberweiss

The last day we did have some cloud cover. But I still thought it was beautiful with all the subtle shades of blue, grey, and green.

Our last hike :(

We had such a great time! I love making memories with my darling little family.

rain rain rain

Like much of the country, we've been having rain. Three days straight of it. Coincidentally I went to downtown Naperville earlier this week to take some pictures of my town, so I got some good "before" pictures. This afternoon when the rain lightened up I wanted to check out how much the river flooded and I got "after" pictures. Pretty crazy!

Pictures of Audrey

When I was in Idaho my cousin Brett took some pictures of Audrey and I. He did such a great job, especially considering that Audrey began screaming the moment I put her blessing dress on. When she finally stopped crying she promptly fell asleep. But he still got a lot of great ones. I just had to put them all up!
