Elliot, Age 2

Two weeks ago, Elliot turned 2.  Her birthday landed on the Superbowl, so we celebrated at my uncle Tom's house with all of his family too.  And, of course, we celebrated Nora Sage's birthday at the same time.
We pretty much just did cake and a few presents while the Halftime show was going on.  But two year olds really don't care do they?

Elliot, Elliot... what to say about her?  She is just the cutest thing.  She's super friendly, still greeting every person she meets at the grocery store and everywhere else.  She loves Frozen, and Anna.  She loves to sing.  Often she makes up her own songs, or tries to sing along to the radio.  Most of the time though, it's "Let It Go" from Frozen.  Ellie, as Malcolm has now transitioned to calling her exclusively, also loves to dance.  She's so silly! She makes the best faces and loves to tease.  She has the greatest scowl ever.
Elliot loves to eat avocado ("cado!").  Like, she'd eat an entire one by herself.  She's a good eater of most things, really.  Though she's not a huge fan of potatoes, or most green veggies, except broccoli. She shares my morning green smoothie almost every day.
Ellie is talking more and more. Most of her words would need interpretation for a regular person not used to her though.  She says Breakfast (ri-fash), exercise (zji-zjize), and other fun versions of words.  She can also put a few short phrases together and two word sentances.
She is still absolutely tiny.  She wears mostly 18 month size clothes, though they're sometimes a little short.  She can hardly sit on the small chairs in nursery at church.
Elliot is very independent, as a usual two year old.  She wants to pick her own clothes, wants to walk without holding your hand, wants to climb into the car and her carseat by herself, and has specific requests all the time.
Her Terrible Two version comes mostly in her amazing ability to suddenly make all the bones in her body disappear.  If she doesn't want to do what you're trying to get her to do, she'll just collapse and no amount of force can make her stand/walk/etc.  But then she is also a pro at making herself stiff as a board so there's no possible way to get her to bend to sit into her booster/carseat/stroller.  She's pretty dramatic and whips out those crocodile tears at the drop of a hat, only to have them go away just as quickly.  Sometimes I think her only speaking volume is screaming.
Elliot pesters her brother far more than he does her.  She's always goading him into getting mad at her, which he's quick to comply with.  But there's plenty of times where they get along and it's the absolute best ever!  Even if it does most often include a lot of noise.
We sure love our Elliot girl.  Life with these kiddos is just The. Best.

Quick Moab Winter Getaway

We got cabin fever a few weeks ago.  I had the weekend off, so we packed up and headed to Moab.  It was kind of a unique vacation, because we took just the jeep.  We'd never be able to camp in it, because it doesn't hold enough, and since it was too cold for camping anyway, we thought this was a good opportunity.  You can't fit both car seats in the back of the Jeep side by side though, so it ended up with Malcolm in front, and me and Elliot in the back while Ryan drove.  It was kind of nice to be so cozy though.  We had lots of fun, actually.
We drove down after Ryan got off work.  We stopped at JCWs as is customary, and then drove until after dark, arriving at the Hampton Inn around 10.  We had a genius idea not to take the pack-n-play because of our limited cargo space.  We thought Elliot might sleep better next to an adult, so we slept in the two queen beds, Ryan with malcolm and Elliot with me.  Well, that is, we tried to sleep.  Elliot was content to just lay there and talk and play and sing for the whole night.  We drifted in and out of sleep when she got quiet, so I don't know if she ever slept, but we gave up at 1 am and called the front desk to ask for a crib.  They brought us a pack-n-play and as soon as Ellie was in there she went right to sleep!  lesson learned!
The next day, after breakfast we stopped by the grocery store for some lunch provisions, then hit the road to go on a jeep drive.  We went to Gemini Bridges and Bull Canyon.  We hiked to the bottom of the bridges and had lunch there, then drove around and saw them from the top too.
Then we stopped by Dead Horse Point State Park and saw the sites.  Then we took Long Canyon home.  Long canyon is usually not that big a deal in a 4x4.  a stock vehicle with high clearance could probably do it.  However, it was so snowy!  We practically skiied our way down the road with rock walls on either side, or a nice cliff drop off instead.  It was crazy!!  But we made it and that made it all the  more exhilerating!
That night we had dinner at Pasta Jays, and pigged out on pasta.  Then we watched Kung Fu Panda 2 on TV before we went to bed.  With Elliot happily in her pack-n-play.
Kids had such a way with vacations.   We're here to drive in some back country red rock scenery and all malcolm can talk about is going back to the hotel.  I'm sure he'd bore of it eventually, but he kept asking when we were going to go back.  We kept telling him not for the whole day, but he tried to convince us to do otherwise.  He survived just fine on our all day adventure even so.
The next day we headed into Canyonlands National Park.  I'd really hoped to do some hiking this day.  Their hikes are all fairly short and kid friendly.  We went to Mesa Arch first, and as we were enjoying the amazing views through it, it started to snow.  Then the storm really blew in, and kind of ruined the day for us.  Not that we couldn't have hiked in the snow, we were prepared.  But all the hikes are supposed to be to areas with sweeping viewpoints.  But our sweeping viewpoints just looked like snow clouds.  ;(
So we called it quits early and headed back for some lunch instead.  Then we drove home!
And that was our trip!

The End!
