Malcolm Speaks

I think I've mentioned on some LWP's or something that Malcolm says actual words.  His first words were "Grapes" and "Ball".  Now he seems to pop up with a new word every day.  Here's a list of all those I can think of right now:

Grapes
Ball
Drink
Cracker
Afro
Pepper
Grandpa
Hat
Good
I did it!

The previous are all things he's said on his own and obviously in appropriate places.  He also now tries to say a lot of what we say to him.  He's repeated a lot of words that start with 'B'.  Like Brush, Bear, and Bra (hey, he found it on the floor). He loves G words and tends to make everything start with G when he first tries it.

It's so fun to hear him talk and say actual words!  Love our little Mal.

Diamond Fork Hotsprings

We're not much in the way of Black Friday shoppers.  We still didn't sleep in much on Black Friday this year though.  Instead, we strapped on our backpacks and hiking shoes and trekked out in 30 degree weather for Diamond Fork Hotsprings.  It was really cold, the ground was frozen and covered in frost that didn't even leave foot prints!  Everything was fine until the last 20 minutes to the hot springs and Malcolm had enough.  He was cold and tired and ended up hiking half of the rest in my arms and then falling asleep in Ryan's for the rest of it.
We hiked it with Andrew and Laura and a bunch of Andrew's family members.  When we got to the springs a while after everyone else, Malcolm was shivering and complaining as we got him undressed as fast as we could and into the hot water.  I felt like such a bad parent, having hauled my toddler out in such cold weather getting borderline hypothermic.  (okay, really, the guilt was making me dramatic). After some time in the warm water and some snacks though, Malcolm was plenty happy.  He splashed and laughed and played in the water until it was time to go.  Then luckily his dip in the hot water had heated him through enough there wasn't one shiver while we put his clothes back on.  We weren't on the trail headed back for even 3 minutes before he was out.  It ended up being really fun and we were glad we went.  We felt more like good parents for bringing our kid out of the typical family outing box.
Lunch was late and we were starving.  We stopped at JCW's as is our custom when down in Utah county and stuffed ourselves more than we had the previous day at Thanksgiving!
We did vow that we wouldn't go so late in the year next year.

Blurry little bundled up Mal.  It was actually cold enough he left his mittens on!

See the poor kid? Just finally settling in.

His hat got wet, so I put mine on him.  It covered his eyes and he didn't care, just let the darkness put him to sleep.

He was snoring away.

The frost did make things very picturesque

Thanksgiving 2012

We had Thanksgiving with the Dearden's this year. It was at Tom's house in their pool house.  I didn't take many pictures, just a smattering of family members.  We did what you do on Thanksgiving.  Ate.  At lot.  Talked, Ate, and then went to a movie!  Well, our family always goes to a movie on Thanksgiving.  This year we saw Rise of the Guardians.  It was pretty cute.  Pretty cheesy.  I bet the kids thought it was great.  Malcolm even watched a good 40 minutes of it before getting bored.  He finally had enough when there was about 10 minutes left and had to leave.  I don't really plan to take him to any more movies until he's older, except maybe more Thanksgiving movies, since everyone that would watch him would be present.  We were done with all the festivities by only 6:30 pm, so we went back home and i got crafty while we watched the Thanksgiving episodes of our usual TV shows.  I know, we're so festive.

Last Week's Pictures (Plus the week's before)

Two weeks ago, I dyed my hair.  I went for the really bright copper color I've done before, but not for a long time.  It was really red!

Two weeks ago, Malcolm also put a flower on his head.  Don't know why, he's just a silly boy!

I also copped him into a snuggle by putting his blanket between us.  He'll always lay his head on it and I get a free snuggle!  Though Ryan has taught him a new trick and he'll give us hugs if we ask like his little dog "Scout" does. "I'm feeling sleepy Malcolm, will you give me a hug?" and he says, "yes!" and lays his head down on whatever body part of yours is closest.

Two weeks ago, for our weekly Modern Family night with Laur and Andrew, I made pumkin pie.  I left one whole pie with Andrew, and he ate it all before the week was through.  He's a bit of a pumpkin pie feind.

I also shaved my legs two weeks ago!  It was an event because I hadn't done it for about a month.  I sent this picture of my new smooth stems to Ryan afterward.  "You're welcome."

Went in to the SLC library downtown to get a book that wasn't at my local library.  Malcolm had a good time too, since we went to the kid's floor and he got to pull book after book off the shelf for me to re-shelf for him.

This was the end of the week, on that first weekend I had off.  We pulled all the dead flowers and weeds out of the front yard.  Malcolm had a good time playing in the dirt.  He also gave Ryan a heart attack when he attempted to pick up and play with a rather large spider.  "Save him!  Save him!" he yelled at me while jabbing a finger at Mal.

I taught on Sunday last week, and I attempted some of that cool chalkboard writing people do.  I got a little carried away I think.

On our way to Sunday dinner.  We looked so classy in our collared shirts and sweaters I had to grab a picture.  Ryan loves how many pictures I take...

Last week is the start of training for the Canyonlands Half Marathon in March.  We're all signed up and hope to get into the lottery.  Malcolm became suddenly very attatched to this spider halloween decoration and brought it along on our run.  Maybe he'll be free of the Green spider phobia after all.

This is what my parents would probably call pay back.  Pay back for all the times I thought it was funny to show my parents my chewed food in my mouth.  Because that is what Malcolm was doing.

Along with our Christmas cards and other pictures for Christmas gifts, I finally printed the pictures for this shadowbox of the things from the hospital when Malcolm was born.

This was Thanksgiving morning, we swapped our old bald summer tires for Jordan's snow tires and rims from his old car.

This is Thanksgiving evening.  When I put the finishing touches on the Christmas village I've been making.  It's Martha Stewart, and a gift from my mom.  I'm excited to have a Christmas village this year!

This is from Saturday after Diamond Fork Hotsprings (post soon to come).  I snarfed more food than I did at Thaksgiving I think.

Mal snarfed what he didn't get all over his shirt with the "ba" (bear) on it.

City Creek Shopping

On Monday of last week, Malcolm and I spent a good chunk of the day shopping with my mom and sister/sisters-in-law.  We went to Tai Pan Trading and other boutiques.  It was fun and very tiring, since I'd ran 2.5 miles that day.  While we were together, we planned a night out to see the Christmas decorated windows at Macy's.  The ZCMI center always had Christmas windows that we would go to see when we saw the lights on Temple Square.  They've been sorely missed since the building of City Creek Center.  They were usually made of candy, and this year was the same! It was fun to do what we had always done and to be out with the entire family.  Even Grandpa... at a mall

We ate at the food court first, then played in the dinosaur themed kid's play area, then strolled through to see the Christmas displays and the windows.  I can't believe Ryan complied with the idea of doing anything Christmasy before Thanksgiving.
This is From earlier in the day while at the Quilted Bear.
The Quited Bear had some of these hand made hats with animal heads.  They were SO adorable, and I kept trying them on Malcolm.  If there weren't so many to choose from I probably would have bought him one, but I seriously couldn't make a decision.  There were at least 10 more hats just as cute as these.  Malcolm was always happy to model them, as you can see.
(Playing in the dinosaurs:)

(At the windows--these were all by Laura with my phone.)

Cool reflective shot, is it not?

At the new (sort of... it moved from the Gateway) Apple store.  Checking out the iPad minis.
