Thanksgiving is such a fabululous holiday...family, food, and running. Three of my favorite things! Dad pulled off his 8th annual Turkey Trot in true Richard Davis form. This year, not only were we required to have staggared start times so that we would all finish "at the same time," but it became an adventure race of sorts with a scavenger hunt thrown in the mix. Running 4.7 miles in perfect weather is a great way to start a day of feasting. And I still can't believe that I didn't go back for seconds or eat any dessert for lunch. What was I thinking?
We had about 40 family members and friends over for lunch. Three types of turkey (baked, smoked, and fried...thank you Steve!), ham, and a slew of southern sides and desserts make for a delicious Thanksgiving dinner. Thank you Mama and Daddy. You are the best!
We ended the day by going to the movies. Mama and Daddy babysat for the sibs with kids and took off to see Blindside...until one of the sibs decided to see New Moon...alone. Of course we couldn't let someone go to the movie alone so three of headed to New moon and the others went to Blindside. (No names to protect the innocent.) That made two times in a week for me...good thing it's easy on the eyes. Lol.
We came back home on Friday so Steve could go to work. But then something amazing happened...we spent the afternoon, evening, and all of Saturday and today together!! It has been soooo wonderful. Over the past few months, if I saw Steve on his way out the door when I was walking in or before I went to bed I considered it a good day. Spending days together was a lovely treat. We organized one of our bedrooms and the garage. And put up our Christmas tree. And listened to hours of Christmas music. And loved it!

Party like it's 1999!
Yesterday, Steve and I attended my 10-year high school reunion. It's so funny how things change but stay the same. Most of my classmates still live in the same small town where we went to school and their children will do the same. Of those who moved away, most still reside within GA. The turnout was bigger than expected and we had a good time. Not being able to attend the 5-year reunion because I was serving a mission in AZ, I was amazed at how many classmates I had not seen since graduation. Since most of us had been in the same classes since Kindergarten, we share memories of our entire school experience. It was, therefore, easy to pick up where we left off- almost like we hadn't missed a beat. Despite dramatic changes in technology (i.e. in high school, beepers were all the rage and only a handful of people had cell phones and email accounts-lol), most people have the same sense of humor and mannerisms and enjoy the same activities. A few people had changed physically, but it was interesting to note how many people looked the same. I think I look the same and apparently others did also considering I was voted "Least Changed." Haha. It must be genetics because my dad was won the same award at one of his class reunions! Unfortunately, not all of my inherited traits are quite so desirable :) I left last night with an increased sense of gratitude for both my life's path up to this point and the direction I am headed. And I am more grateful for a dedicated husband who willingly tagged along.

Found a funny pic
Haha. I found a photo of me running the half marathon in October. Click on the link to see me getting smoked by a 50 year old women (no offense to 50 year olds)!

Hopefully this catches you up
So what has happened in the almost 6 months since I have posted? Following the Dawgs around the SEC, Graduation, another birthday, a new year, weddings, a pregnancy announcement, a new president, a new job, my first trip to the ER, and a snow storm. Not much really :) Hmm, where should I start?
We'll start with the bittersweet football season of our beloved Georgia Bulldogs. We endured blasting heat and the ear-piercing cry of the cock in Columbia, SC to watch the Dawgs pull off an ugly victory against the Gamecocks. We braved the freezing wind of Lexington to see Georgia clinch a last minute victory, and endure the brutal winds and blistering beating the Gators put on us in Jacksonville. Good thing for great friends, yummy eats, and beautiful scenery (well to Lexington anyway) to make all the trips worthwhile.
The next stop on my jog down memory lane is Graduation. That was a long time in the making. My grad school mates are laughing while Steve, my mother, and I are heaving big sighs of relief-all for different reasons I am sure. It was pretty hectic but of course fun with so much of our family in town. I mean you have to know you have a great family if they fly and drive from different parts of the country to watch you march across a stage looking like Harry Potter (seriously have you seen the sleeves on the graduate robes?) at a boring ceremony that lasts for less than 2 hours. If any of you are reading this, thanks again. It meant a ton! As with all graduations, it was exciting to begin a new chapter while saddening (if "maddening" is a word, isn't "saddening?") to say goodbye to good friends. I miss you!!
This year we relieved the Christmas of my past with my family in Cochran. I love the old familiar traditions of sharing a delicious Thanksgivingish meal with family at my paternal grandparents' home on Christmas Eve. The crowd, the noise, and the excitement grows each time we are there. Christmas day was also very traditional this year as we spent the day at my parents' home and the evening at my maternal grandparents' home eating as usual an very non-traditional meal. This year it was pizza.
Our next road trip took us to Asheville to the Biltmore. If you've never seen a castle, the Biltmore is as close as you'll get in the U.S. It's a pretty amazing to be in a house that is at least 100 times bigger than mine (I know I know, it doesn't take much to be bigger than ours- lol). A chance dinner at the Grove Park Inn was a delicious unexpected surprise. Just so you are more informed than I was when I selected it for dinner...there are many restaurants at the resort. They are probably all good but we went to the Blue Ridge Dining Room. The food and the view are nice.
On the road again....we spent New Year's driving to Virginia, stopping to watch the Dawgs not-so-fabulous first half and driving through the worth-watching second half. Watching our friends Kevin and Joanne become Lt. Junior Grade (did I get that right, Joanne?) and Mrs. Kevin Walter was beautiful. The bride, ceremony, and reception were gorgeous of course. I love weddings. Even Steve, Mr. "I don't do weddings" had a good time (wink)!
A week later it was off to Michigan to play mom to three great boys. Little did I know that the freezing temps and snow would prep me for a March weekend in Georgia! Ha.
In case you are wondering when I found time to get a job, it was while I was on the road. Literally. I applied for my current job from a hotel room and arranged interviews on the weekend between trips and while driving to the airport. I even had to arrange to fly home early from Michigan to attend orientation and start a job that I didn't have when I left. A big thank you to those of you who facilitated this process. I love my job!
It seemed that as crazy as things were, they were equally as wonderful. Life can't always be a bowl of peaches, right? Valentine's morning found me feeling icky. I put on my brave, feel-good face because my best friend Brooke was in town and we had events to attend. As the day wore on, it became more and more difficult to keep on my happy face. Finally, later that night, I found myself in the ER with Steve by my side and a disgruntled lady ranting in the corner of the room. Every test they ran was negative. Here's the irony. I was nauseated and in pain all day. It progressed to the point that they gave me morphine for the pain, but it made me so sick that they had to give me anti-nausea medicine. haha. Poor Steve sat in a cramped chair by my side the whole time. Talk about showing some love on Valentine's Day!
Snow. March. Georgia. If you live here or have ever lived here, you understand. Let me illustrate. We experience mild temps for most of the winter. We usually are wearing short sleeves at Christmas, and we get a cold spell or two in January and February but usually nothing major. But if it gets cold in March, you had better be prepared because it's gonna be nasty. And this past weekend was no exception. Rain on Friday, rain on Saturday, and rain, sleet, and snow on Sunday= power outages, horrible roads, no work on Monday, and the hospitality of nice friends. Can you believe we got about 6 or 7 inches here at our house? I can everytime I walk to my car and slip on the frozen snow. We can barely even open our front door. If we were smart, we would have shoveled it away before it turned to ice. Oh well. I have documented the spectacular sight in pics on facebook and will probably upload some here soon (remember "soon" is so relative. lol) And it's predicted to be in the 60's or 70's later this week! Gotta love Georgia weather.
Congrats, Renee and Dylan. We love you and are so happy for you! I'm so excited about being an aunt again!
And to Laura and Matt we wish you all the happiness in the world!
