Training Progress for Boston Marathon

Training is still progressing slowly. Although I'm feeling fitter than 2-3 weeks ago, I am still no where near the peak. Running a 5:00m/km pace is much easier now than before. My foot has been kind to me so far during my runs, although feeling the pain when I wake up in the mornings is still there, it is much more bearable than couple months ago. I am still trying to increase my mileage gradually, but sometimes work commitments and of course a little lack of motivation after a long lay off is expected.

After this weekend Malakoff Run, will try to wake up in the morning for runs, so that by the end of the day, I won't have to rush back home to go out for a run. It's easier said than done since waking up early has always been an issue for me! More of a evening runs person.
I am planning a race for the Dutamas Runners group on 31 Dec. It's a handicap race where the slower runners will get to start first followed by the faster runners based on their best/current 10-k timing. Thought this would be a fun race to do as I got this idea form the time of my study in NZ. Handicap races are quite popular there. I am sure they will get a kick in chasing down the runners in front of them. Geoff will the first runner to start off and the last runner, Melvin, will be giving Geoff about 28 min headstart in a 8.6km race (Actual distance will be announced soon). This will hopefully be Dutamas Runners monthly race series and will keep this as part of a tracking to see the improvement of each runner. Chin Ann even requested me to make this like the Champions League format! Here is the listing of those taking part (there will quite a few runners who have decided to give this event a miss, but I intend to list them down for future tracking purposes).

Good luck those running the Malakoff Run this weekend and also to Yvonne & Bin, who will be doing their first official marathon race this Sun in Taipei running the Fubon Taipei Marathon. AS for me, I got to pick up steam in my training!

Road To Boston

Getting back to training is a lot tougher than I would have thought. 10-11 months out is a long time for a "break", but I think I am getting back into the groove. I've done 3 runs this week alone including the PJ Half Marathon last week."Season Best" time as Adam puts it. 1:49. Plus two other short 7km run around my area. Hope to continue on this to build up what I've lost. I've put on almost 10kg since I did Berlin Marathon, not that anyone notices it. Some did though.

Looking forward to races in the coming months, not too much about doing exceptionally well but just to gain some racing mentality back. Next few races left in my schedule:

1. Mou Man Tai Run, TTDI (Nov 13) - 5km (Ok ok, I shouldn't call this a race at all!)

2. Allianz Penang Bridge International Marathon (Nov 20) - 21.1km

3. Park City Run, Desa Park City (Nov 27) - 10km

4. Malakoff Run (18 Dec), Bukit Kiara Equestrian and Country Resort - 12km

I was reading the Runner's World Magazine today (Dec 2011) and came across this article on "Ben Davis: A Huge Transformation" and it led me to this You Tube story he made on about himself, really inspiring and you guys should watch this. Now, I'm more inspired than ever to get back in shape!

He left us with a quote, "....if you want to do it, all you have to do is do it!" Enjoy the video.

Boston....Here I Come....

Why was I talking about Boston in the previous post? Well, I am IN! I have been accepted to run the 2012 Boston Marathon. Finally get to live my American dream.... : )

Considered as the Holy Grail for most marathon runners, it attracts thousands of applications each year but only about 30,000 runners selected. It's a lot less than some of the major runs, i.e. Berlin, London, New York & Chicago, but it's the only run where you do need to meet the qualifying time and hope for the best that you'll get picked. In another way, you can also get in by way of donations.

The course

Looks like I got to put on my shoe and hit the roads! Got to get ready for the Heartbreak Hill!

The field size for the 2012 Boston Marathon will not represent a significant increase from recent years.

It  is going to be harder to qualify for the 2013 edition.

No Updates, No Runs...

To be honest, I have not done much running since I got injured and that is almost 8 months ago. Still run once a while just to keep myself in a little bit of shape. My foot seems to be getting better, doesn't hurt as much as it used to, but am taking it light and easy!

I will join in a few runs just to get myself back into racing mentality, but it's mainly to gain race fitness. I'm still far away from full fitness but I am doing at least 2 runs a week. OK, I know it's far away from my used-to-be 6 days a week training, but at least I'm trying to get back. It's a long road though. Can't even maintain a 4:30 pace for too long right now.

Well now, what have I got in store in the coming weeks?

1. 02 Oct - Adidas King of The Road (16.8km)

2. 30 Oct - PJ Half Marathon (21.1km)

3. 20 Nov - Allianz Penang Bridge International Marathon (21.1km)
Well this one is kind of a last minute event. I hated running Penang Bridge but a free entrance and lots of friends heading there equals to fun!

4. 27 Nov - Park City Run  (10km)

5. 18 Dec - Malakoff Run (12km)

That's a lot of races I've got myself into! Paid a hefty fee for it too. Long gone the days where runs used to be RM10-20! I'll take this as part of my training runs, my LSD! Ok....it's not really long for some, but it is for me now.

Dutamas Runners gang has gone places, participated in many races in recent months and in the upcoming races too! This weekend, there will be a few runners doing their virgin full marathon, i.e. Yvonne & Bin, the running couple. Some will be heading for Siemens, while some Pudu Charity Run. There could be some doing the OCBC bike ride. As for me, I'll be doing my Not So Long Slow Distance.....

Preparation For Upcoming Races

There are couple races to prepare for this year. Not much I can do to clock a good time in the coming months as I have not recovered fully from my injury on my left foot. Anyway, I was more than happy to help the others to prepare for their races. Some to better their time, some running for the first time.

Key races:
1. Adidas King of The Road - 2 October 2011(Official website, click here)
2. Malakoff KL Run - 18 December 2011(Registration open: Click here)

Dutamas Runners group have been training hard and recently had their first group circuit training. This is where we did 10 forms of exercises. We couldn't find an indoor place and our plan to have it inside the outdoor tennis court in Anggunpuri Condo was foiled by heavy rain that started late evening. However, we made the most of it by having the training done in the basement carpark of the condo. It was torturous but I felt that everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves (HOPEFULLY!).

Here's a video posted in facebook by Andrew Hsien. Click here.

There will be a training run this Wednesday at Desa Park City (DPC) at 8.30pm. For anyone who wants to join, please meet us at the carpark next to the clubhouse of DPC. Distance will be around 8km, 4 loops around DPC.

Some of the other activities we did:

1. A trekking adventure to Sg Kanching

2. Participation in Pacemaker Anniversary Run 7 - Taman Metropolitan Kepong

The Porklings

3. And as always, when you run, there's always good food waiting for you at the end.

So join the Dutamas Runners Revolution.....

2 Races In 2 Weekends

It doesn't seem like much to run a total of 17.2km in two races over two weekends but with my current fitness, it seems like a daunting task. Glad that I got through both races fine. Foot does hurt at times but after a few kms it's not as bad, but I just hope I am not making it any worse off.

Good to have a few of the Dutamas Runners finishing their first marathon and also first ever running race.

Congrats Melvin, Lynn, Azam and Kenny on their first marathon debut. And congrats to Geoffery for his first ever running race.

For the rest, well done as some of you did their PBs. For me, I'm just glad that I finished both races in one piece.

Run No. 1

Run No. 2

Have not registered for any runs in the next coming months but hopefully to get back into training mode soon. Somehow I think it's going to be tougher than my past comebacks.

Long Time No Updates!

It's been a while since I last updated this blog. I am just feeling excited about tomorrow, cos I have not been to a big race event since Energizer (which is pretty F$%& up! by the organisers). My foot injury has not heal so am going to take it easy tomorrow and probably walk if I must. I am more excited about a few friends of mine who are doing their first.....Azam, Kenny, Lynn and Melvin - doing their first full marathon & Geoff who will be doing his first running race. Hope he comes back with a medal in his hands. At least can give him a little boost in running morale.

Some of the runners taking part tomorrow......

Chae Yin, Seng Chor, Yin, Melvin, Yvonne, Lynn & Bin
Kenny
Geoff
As for me....I wasn't supposed to run tomorrow, but Geoff managed to get me a free entry into the 10km run, courtesy of MSIG insurance. Got to wear their shirt though, which looks like DiGi colours!

Good luck to everyone tomorrow!

Li Na Wins 2011 French Open

Li Na who came close of becoming the first Asian to win a grand slam early in the year at the Australian Open, finally came true at the French Open final last night. She has had an amazing 2 weeks and winning the French Open title really made us Asians feel proud especially the Chinese. Of course, we can always remember Michael Chang winning the title back in 1989 as a 17-year old. However, he is an American Chinese so the impact was not as great as what Li Na did last night.

What is so amazing is that she has lost in a lot of first round match after the dream final in Australia. She had four successive first round defeats that prompted her to bring in Thomas Hogstedt and Michael Mortensen as coaches to replace her husband who became the hitting partner instead.

Last night's final also saw one of the oldest cumulative age in a grand slam final. Li Na is 29 and Schiavone is 30. These shows older players are not to be written off in tennis seemingly dominated by the young players.

So well done Li Na!

Shocking News.......Samuel Wanjiru is DEAD!

I can't believe that Samuel Wanjiru is dead. Wanjiru who won the Beijing Olympic Gold, becoming the first Kenyan runner to ever win an Olympic Gold medal. Surprisingly, Kenya boast the best distance runners in the world but has never won the full marathon gold up until Beijing. Wanjiru did it in style by smashing the Olympic record in 2:06:32.

He went on to win the London and Chicago marathon in 2009 and defended his Chicago title again in 2010. You will usually see runners progress to marathon later in their career such as Haile Gebreselassie and Paul Tergat but Wanjiru broke the senior ranks in marathon at a young age. He won the Beijing gold at the age of 21.

It's a mystery how he died, rumoured to have jumped to his death. He was a man without controversy.

Now I feel my medal from Berlin Marathon is really worth something though I've always asked why his face appears on the medal when he has never competed in the Berlin Marathon before.

Still Recovering..

Been a while since I updated this blog...I know this posting is a little late since it was about my run in Energizer.

After weeks and weeks of rest due to injury on my foot, I thought I should give the Energizer Night Run since I've already paid so much for it. Besides, it's held on Sepang F1 track.it's not everyday you get a chance in running on a F1 track. I've already been there for F1, rode on the track on a two-wheeler, without the engine. So running on it will be something new to me. I drove to Ray's house and car pooled with him, Michelle and also Bobby. All of us running the half marathon except for Michelle who is doing the 11km.

Upon reaching Sepang, we saw quite a huge turnout for the event. I think a lot of people are quite excited for the event as it will be a different experience running on a F1 track. As we entered the car park, we were getting ready the money to pay the attendant and we thought RM5 would pretty much cover the parking fees (actually we were free parkings). However, we got a shock of our life when the guy said "Sepuluh Ringgit". What the F$%#??!! We came from so far away to run this event, we not only got charged so much on the registration fee, but getting charged at this exuberant parking fee is just absurd!

Next up, runners had to go through a small tunnel to reach the starting line. Then we weren't sure where to pick up our headlight or leave our bags. Come to think of it, there wasn't sign to tell us where to go.

I had to go back out to leave my bag at the baggage area. Got another shocker looking at the queue. There was no way I would be in time to reach the starting line in time. Then the queue started moving, but that was when I saw some volunteers giving out stickers with numbers. You are supposed to stick your own but everyone was beating queue to get to the baggage area and to my surprise, runners are allowed to go into baggage area. Only a few volunteers and there were no labeled numbering to stack the bags. They will have a tough time finding bags later for sure when everyone comes back to collect it. I tried hard to remember where they left my bag.
Next was the starting line. Nothing different from every other races. Runners gathered in the wide open track waiting for the flag off. What comes as a shock when the race started. The crowd were directed to a smaller lane to allow the runners to go through the running mat to record the timing chips. It causes massive human traffic and everyone had to walk pass the start line out to the open track.

One minute into the run, my foot is in pain. Anyway, I thought it would get better after I'm warmed up. But it wasn't to be. We were led out of the track to the road before coming back to track at around 8km. I dragged on at a slow pace and it got slower when when we came back to the track. Soon from a slow jog, it came to almost a halt. Started walking, grabbed a drink and kept on walking. I saw the finishing line but for half marathoners, there's still another lap to go. I made a decision to stop as I didn't want to risk making my injury worse.

I saw a long wait for the goodie bag and wasn't to keen to queue, then I was told by Houn that was for the 10km runners. The goodie bag collection for half marathoners is beside it.

To my surprise, the goodies weren't in the bag yet. It was only packed when runners asked for it. It didn't take long before the crowds got bigger and rowdier until a point where some impatient people took matters into their own hands and grabbed the bag and threw it out to the crowds.

Soon the police had to be called in to disperse the crowd. Some didn't get their goodie bag nor medal. Many felt disappointed. Anyway, I couldn't care less about it as I was more disappointed that my foot didn't recover well enough and I've probably made it worse running the race. I hurried to get my backpack from the luggage area, luckily there weren't that many people yet. Got my bags and waited for the rest of the guys.

It came as a big news about the poor organising of the race. Organiser was heavily criticized in the facebook page and the papers. What comes as news few days after was that Energizer will be refunding the registration fees. Check out the link. It's a nice gesture from them but the wounds probably to deep to heal.

Haven't run since Energizer Night Race, some improvement on the foot but still feeling discomfort at times. I'll try not to run till I feel I can and I think it's going to take a long time to recover. I'm already forced into wearing a cushion slipper at home to help me recover faster. Hopefully can recover in time for the second half of the year. At least get some training going. Next year would be my aim to race fit again.

Feeling Unfit And Unhealthy

I've been out of the running scene for a long time and only made a few cameo appearances once in a blue moon. Partly, I've just started work, partly I'm lazy and also I'm injured. Never a day that I got out of my bed without feeling a little discomfort in walking on my left foot. Had to stretch a little bit before it felt fine. Maybe I should join a yoga class to help my injury eh?

Made a trip back to Kuching and saw a weighing scale in my home. Haven't weigh myself for a long time. Step onto the scale......Wow! I am 5-6kg heavier now!

It must be the  supper, eating Sarawak kolo mee and laksa, that we found nearby to where I stay. Man, I got a long way to make a comeback in running now! My pants are starting to feel tight now too! Overall body mass seem to be normal except for the belly part I think. That's the worst part to be expanding!

I better start getting back into my fitness routine before I'm one of those with "beer belly".

First Run Since Donkey Weeks....

Had my first run this evening of about 7km. Just testing out my foot and see whether I can start training or not. Seems fine throughout the run although I do feel sore sometimes during the run. But it's usually worse when you wake up in the morning. Nowadays, I need to do a little bit of stretching on my calf before I get out of bed.

Anyways, it's been 3 weeks since my last runs with Kenny and also a 10km run on 25-26 Feb weekends. I was supposed to run the Bareno Half Marathon but due to a "technical" problem, I missed the event....

Couldn't go any faster even though I wanted to, but it was ok for a first run after a long break. I will still continue to monitor and access my foot injury and not put in too much mileage. I'll just try to keep myself in a little bit of shape so I can get back into full training when the foot is healed.

Reds Revival!

Can't be any happier to see Reds beat Man United at Anfield. After giving Chelsea the blues, they gave Man United the red tonight. 3-1!! 2 big wins for Reds since Kenny Dalglish took over. Wish he was appointed earlier....but better late than never. Few months back, the impossible seems possible, Liverpool looking likely to be relegated! Tonight, they have clawed their way back to sixth! Well done Liverpool and King Kenny!

And thank you Kuyt! Talk about Gerrard-Fowler, Gerrard-Owen, Gerrard-Torres combination, now we have a new combo, Suárez-Kuyt! Lethal....

Liverpool's Dirk Kuyt celebrates with Luis Suárez after scoring
against Manchester United at Anfield. Photograph: Tim Hales/AP

And who could forget Nani's "performance". He took a hard knock from Carragher, and fell on the ground. But the funny 'soap opera' came after that incident. He got up ran over (I meant sprint over!) to the referee to complain, then fell over a "push" by Stevie G. And he started CRYING! To cap it all off, lashed out at one of the guys carrying the stretcher! What a performance, he deserves an Oscar for this! Ferguson was smart not to let him on again, maybe he really is having an injury, but I think this gives chance to Ferguson to rant at the referee at the press conference yet again!

A Special Preview Of My New Shoe

Just bought a training shoe for myself. A bargain actually. I was contemplating in getting the Mizuno Idaten for RM189 couple days back but thought about it again, "Do I need another racer?" Told myself I really need a training shoe that can last and give me a little support.

So I was at The Curve tonight and saw some of the Brooks on offer price. The only one that caught my eyes was Brooks Ghost 2 (besides the newer models of the racers!). It felt light and cushioning seems good. The best part is, it's under RM200! RM199. Haven't got to test it yet as I'm still feeling sore on both my feet especially the left one. Will give it a try maybe tomorrow or Friday night.

Here's some photos of the shoe....

A Painful LSD

I did my first LSD today, but had to give up after 21km after my foot (actually both feet) are feeling the pain. Had plantar fasciitis last year which was not fully healed but bearable. It actually got better but I guess the inconsistency on training and with my shoe sole running thin, I guess that might be the cause of it. Walked the last few kms (maybe 3-4km) back home. Lucky, my neighbour, Zul, was driving back and offered me a ride.

I wanted to buy the Mizuno Idaten shoe which was on sale for RM189 after 50% discount. Didn't buy it in the end as I thought I've already got a racing shoe which is still new. I think it's better for me to go shop around for training shoe this week rather than getting another race shoe.

Kind of tough to walk after the run and I think when I wake up tomorrow, it's going to hurt. I better remember to stretch it when I wake up tomorrow to minimise the pain.

Had to stop at the Pacesetters water station in front of Duta Tennis Centre. Grabbed couple of drinks and tried to run back but had to stop just after Matrade Centre. Going to rest tomorrow and see how it feels. Not much time left to train for Bareno 21km though. Will go do some surveys on training shoes....

Chinese New Year Week

Managed to slot in 2 runs during my trip back to Kuching. One was on Chinese New Year eve, where I did a 10km run. Average pace was around 4:46/km, about 6 laps around Reservoir Park. The other run was with Kevin Chiang (my ex-schoolmate from St. Joseph). on the 2nd day of CNY. We met up in front of Boulevard near our house at 6.30am. We went along Hup Kee Rd towards Hui Sing Garden and Stampin Rd. (see Garmin Connect Map below). Had a good chat with him. He started running about 6 years ago when his weight ballooned up to over 80kg and wanted to reduce his weight to stay healthy. Now he is only over 65kg. I must say he is definitely a running addict now....compared to the lazy me. No one actually forced him to run, rather it was his own initiative and keeping himself motivated to reduce his weight. Well done, Kevin!

What else happened during the week? Well I had a record breaking ang pao collection of RM30! (Getting too old to receive ang pao now). Met up with a few of my long lost ex-classmates. It was good to catch up with them.

Flight back to KL was really quick today. Arrived much earlier than the scheduled time. I managed to turn on my gps watch but it didnt work as well as I was sitting at the aisle. Somehow I was still at an elevation of 1000m+ when we landed. Something went wrong there (Check out the map).

Last Group Run For Dutamas Runner Before The Chinese New Year Break

We had the last group run for Dutamas Runners (DR) last Saturday. Quite a few turned up for the run. Yvonne and Bin are the usual ones. YLoon, making a slow progress back into running again, so too is Melvin. Then, new friend I met through Yin, Seng Chor who brought his friend, Chae Yin. Both of them works at Bursa KL.

We planned for a 14.3km run from LFKL towards LHDN and Petronas in Desa Sri Hartamas. I had a nice slow run which I quite enjoy as I am still tuning myself back into training again. Just signed up for Bareno Half Marathon and also Energizer Night Race in the half marathon distance as well. For more information on the events, please click on the links below:
1. Energizer Night Race (17 April)
2. Bareno Run 2011 (13 March)

From left: Bin, YLoon, Melvin, Me, Chae Yin, Seng Chor and Yvonne
Took me about 1:40 to finish a 15km but it was better than not running at all. Now am back in Kuching and I haven't even put on my running shoes yet. Got to get ready for Bareno Run soon......
