"Roses have been planted in the vineyards for centuries and the reason for this was not purely aesthetic. Roses and grapevines are vulnerable to the same diseases and with roses in the vineyards it was easy to spot if a fungal disease were spreading on the roses and treatment could be commenced before it was too late. Another reason for having roses among the vines was that it attracts insects, which serve as predators towards other insects that are harmful to the vines.
Nowadays there are more efficient ways of detecting diseases and combat insect attacks so the use of roses mainly serves for decorative reasons, but with the growing interest for organic production this traditional method of farming may once again gain importance. Roses are also used when describing aromas found in wines, especially for white wines."

RaderaVery interesting post. I never knew that they grew roses with grapevines. My great grandmother had two rolls of green grapevines. I remember watching them grow but she never had any roses around them.
SvaraRaderaI love roses and had some that were really gorgeous but I always had to watch for the fungus . Every year, I would have to put powder on them to keep the fungus from spreading. They were hard to grow!
I am very glad that you found interesting things on my blog :).
