HAPPY 1st BIRTHDAY ROMY!!!!!

Everyone's favorite peanut turned 1 yesterday! I can't believe how fast this year flew by! It's so amazing to see how far she's come in one short year. She's was born weighing 1 pound and 3 ounces and 11.75 inches long, now she's 13 pounds and 24.5 inches long. We are so blessed to have her in our lives. Here's a run down of her development and personality up to this point:

She has mastered toy grabbing and likes to chew on anything that comes within grabbing distance. She's well on her way to mastering rolling, she does it 80%of the time but has yet to figure out how to roll back to front. She eats 4-5 ounce bottles every 2-3 hours. She loves to munch on her zwieback toast, and it keeps her quiet! She also enjoys many table foods. Her faves are mashed potatoes, rice (must be the flip in her), mushy carrots, biscuits and gravy (a new one!), and she recently started eating and loving avocado. She can't quite self feed, but tries. She can hold on and eat the stuff you put in her hand and will attempt to pick up food, but doesn't have the hand eye coordination down 100%, just yet. She still eats baby food now and then, but prefers the real stuff.

She is a very smiley and giggly baby. It takes very little to make her crack up. Making funny noises is her favorite. Also if you say her full name and emphasize "Schuck," she goes absolutely nuts. She's got one dimple on her right cheek that shows up the most when you tickle her. She's extremely ticklish! especially her belly and under her chin.

She's a very laid back and easy going kid. She doesn't fuss much, thank goodness. She likes people and doesn't mind being held by others, but she won't truly warm up to someone new for at least a day or two. She likes being held and looking around at everything around her, sometimes she offers audio commentary....mostly high pitched squeals and raspberries(her favorite).

She's a decent a sleeper, but naps don't come easy. Some nights she'll sleep through the night, but most nights she'll wake just once to eat. She averages 13-15 hours a day. Not to shabby.

All together, she's an awesome baby. She lights up the world and brightens my life. It's amazing how someone who can't talk and that I've only known for a year can mean so much and change things for the better so easily. She is a true blessing and we are so lucky!

Romy and her cake. I made it myself and I think it turned out pretty good.

Romy playing with her cool new toy from Yaya and Papa.

She was very curious about her cake.

It's a tradition in my family to get cake smushed in your face on your birthday. One year old babies are no exception.

Romy's genes

I forgot to add to my last post that Romy's chromosome tests came back. She has normal ones! No deletions or missing chromosomes that they could find. It's a pretty thorough test, but there are a few syndromes that it can miss, yet in my heart, I don't think she has any of them. She's a just a little petite lady and probably always will be. No harm in that. I hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

"Oh Kuya Christopher, you are so funny!"

Romy working the camera in her Christmas dress.

She loves her carrots!

Beautiful girl's, RoRo and Gabo

She loves her reflection...so vain!

Romy admiring her new stuff.

Zwieback toast is her favorite!

This ended up being Romy's favorite place to be, she just laid under the tree and stared at the lights and grabbed ornaments.

Romy and Uncle Kane.... check out the size difference, she's so little!

Romy's first time in the snow. She liked it!

Romy and myself had a great Christmas, but it would have been perfect if Daddy was home. We miss him a whole lot! It's been snowing like crazy here in Washington, so Romy's very first Christmas was a white snowy one! She got lots of great gifts, and has been having a blast hanging out with her cousins. Her birthday is coming up in a couple of days and I'm going to attempt to make her a huge 5 layered cake....so wish me luck on that because I am SO not a baker.

Romy's Brain

We had a visit with a neurologist today and got some good news. Based on a physical examination of Romy and some background references, Romy is nearly guaranteed to walk. And since she doesn't show any signs of seizures, is very likely to have completely normal (pending chromosonal testing comes out in our favor- which I believe it will) or above normal intelligence! She has maintained her "walking reflexes" meaning she can move her legs one after another in a walking fashion. Her newborn reflexes are gone or nearly gone which is another great sign. She smiles and giggles just like a baby should. The next step is to get her in loads of consistent therapy and into a spasticity clinic to manage the tightness in her legs. She may even get botox injections into her muscles (the real reason botox was invented). It's kind of ironic to get such wonderful news on the anniversary of the day I was admitted into the hospital for an unknown placenta problem. One year ago today, I was scared out of my mind and was told my baby was extremely likely to either die or be severely handicapped. God works in such mysterious and wonderful ways.

Anyway, Romy and I are leaving for Washington tomorrow to spend the holidays and her birthday with my family. Romy will get to hang out with her cousins for a few weeks and we're very excited! It's snowing there now, so we're going to bundle Romy up in a snow suit and let her play (more like sit and cry) in the snow and get a few pictures.

One year ago today.

Today marks the one year anniversary of the day we got a fateful phone call. They thought the baby growing in my womb had Spina Bifida. The two weeks that followed were a complete whirlwind. Obviously she didn't have Spina Bifida, but we did end up with one amazing little girl. A little fighter that completely changed every single aspect of my life. She changed the way I think and act, the way I respond to others, the way I look at life. I am so lucky. I love you Romy, thank you for changing me.

Physical Therapy update.

Romy's physical therapist came by today for one last visit before Christmas vacation. We hadn't seen her in three weeks because we were in Florida. She was very impressed with how much Romy has progressed. That little stinker has come a long way. I'm not really aggressive when it comes to Romy's therapy, I just let her guide me. If she fusses and cries then I stop and try again after an hour or so. We do some stretches and wiggle her arms and leg muscles for 5-10 minutes on and off throughout the day, usually during diaper changes. It seems to work for us. If I force the issue, she just tenses and tightens up even more and getting her to loosen up is virtually impossible. When Romy is lying on her back, her legs were usually stretched straight out in front of her with her toes pointing down. But now, more often than not, she relaxes her legs with her knees bent and her toes pointing outward, you know, the usual baby stance. It's looking the therapy is working, well that and/or she's losing some tightness that lingered past her newborn days.

Romy is also getting more intrigued with toys now. Before she was content with her teething rings and her glow worm. Now, if she sees anything in your hands, she sticks her little hands out as far as they go, trying to get you to hand it over. We played all day until I had to take her to see the Doc and get another RSV and flu shot.

Can you believe she'll be 1 in two weeks? I can't believe how time flew.

Manny! Manny! Manny!

Romy is a huge Manny Pacquiao fan. They're a lot alike. Small but mighty, Filipino and NUMBER 1!!!!

P.S- Eye update! Romy's vision hasn't gotten worse in two months! Her Opthalmalogist doesn't need to see her until March! Her hemangioma is in the "involuting" phase, meaning it's going away! I have been slacking big time on making her wear her glasses. It's a constant fight to keep them on her face and out of her mouth, but wearing her glasses is the only way to improve her eyesight. So I vow to make her wear her glasses for at least 6 hours a day.

Thankful.

The whole family has reunited for Thanksgiving here in Tallahassee. Unfortunately, Ray started off his vacation by catching a bacterial bowel infection, they think it was dysentery. He stayed in bed and only left to throw up or go back and forth to the doctor. He's much better now, and we're enjoying the last week as a family. Ray and I took a trip to Disney World and left the kiddo with her Yaya and Papa Goat. We had a blast and it was a much needed vacation for us both!

Romy has met lots of family members, and she loves them all. She met another great-grandpa who lovingly calls her "7," because she's his 7th great-grandchild! He also gifted her with a beautiful rosary that was handed down to his wife and now to Romy. After an amazing meal we celebrated Romy's 11 month old birthday and let her dig into a cake. It took a little prodding, but she eventually came around a got her fingers in there with a little help from Dad. Everyone has been sneaking her bites of food that I'm sure she isn't supposed to be eating yet, and she's gotten a bit heavier in the past few days. I'm guessing 13 or 14 pounds now?

I definitely have a lot to be thankful for this year. My brave husband, great family, health and of course my little shining grace, Romy Raye. I love you little lady.

Food Play and Guess where we're moving?!

As part of Romy's therapy, I was instructed to let her play with her food. I was told to dump her food out and let her roll around in it. The point is to get her to use her arms more and to let her experience different textures and sensations. It was a mess, but so much fun. It took her a little while to get used to the idea, she just stared at me with a confused look for a bit, kinda like "You're really gonna let me do this?" type of look.

Ray tried to get orders to Georgia, but the Army denied them and decided to send us to Hawaii instead! We all had our hopes up for Georgia but hey, I'll take Hawaii! Before Romy was born, I had the opportunity to live in Hawaii for a year and I completely fell in love with the place, so I'm pretty stoked to go back and get Romy in the ocean. Swimming is said to be excellent therapy for Cerebral Palsy. My hope is to get her on surfboard! My Dad is originally from Hawaii and I have a set of Grandparents who live out there too. They've never seen Romy, so it will be great to have them close by. We should be heading out that way next summer.

Romy and I are leaving for Florida on Sunday! Daddy Ray will be home for a little over 2 weeks before he heads back to Iraq to finish off his tour. We are SO excited! I can't wait for Ray to see how much our kid has grown! Last time he saw her she weighed less than 5 pounds and slept 20 hours of the day! We'll be staying with his family, and we are all looking forward to hanging out and just having a great time. It will be Romy's first plane ride! Any tips on taking a baby on a plane without having a melt down?

Are sure you want me to do this Mom?

This is weird!

Yum Yum Yum!

I need a shower!

All clean!

That was fun, Mom!

Funniest.Picture.Ever.

Best face ever, huh? Romy made a grab at her food and splashed it all over her. It really surprised her, can you tell?

Terrible Palsy?

Cerebral Palsy has been formally confirmed. I'm bummed, but it wasn't a huge surprise. Things could be alot worse, and I'm just happy to see that cute little mug of hers smiling everyday. The type of CP she has is called, "Diplegia." It's the type of CP that many preemies end up having. The doctor isn't certain of the severity, because she's still developing, but he's positive it isn't severe. Diplegia mainly affects the legs, and she seems to have great hand control. He noticed a little bit of tightness in her torso, but seems to think it can be worked out through therapy. He said looking at her and how well she can move, he's pretty sure she'll walk eventually, but she may or may not need braces a walker or some other device. After the holiday's Romy will start occupational therapy and physical therapy twice a week instead of just once.

A speech therapist saw her too, and noticed her excessive drooling, (even for a teething baby)and wants to start therapy to strengthen her oro-motor skills. It could also help her reflux.

We also saw a geneticist. She was brought in because there's some concern with Romy's growth. Although she is growing, it's at a VERY slow rate. She'll be a year old next month and she's only 12 pounds 5 ounces and two feet long. They took some blood, and we'll get results in 6 weeks. She mentioned a specific type of syndrome, but Romy only shows very few signs of it, and I don't believe she has it, the geneticist herself is still unsure. So I've asked my family and my Mother-in-Law to scan some pictures of myself and Ray as babies, as well as a few of my older sister, whom Romy looks strikingly like. I'll send those to the geneticist so she can compare. Alot of the facial characteristics described in the syndrome, are classic Asian features and well, Romy IS half Asian. So we'll see. But anyway, I thought I'd share the pictures I've collected so we can all compare!

Me, my sister Lisa, and my enormous sumo wrestler brother, Kane.

Lisa as a baby, swimming in a pool.....inside??

Me, and yes, I am aware that I look like one of The Beatles.

Ray when he was 2. Man he was so blonde, his hair is dark now, but he still acts blonde. Love you!

Yummy!

So prim, proper and lady like!

Get over here spoon!

Almost!

Nom nom nom!

A post two days in a row? I'm on a roll! I just had to share these funny pictures of Romy. Romy and I shared a bowl of homemade butternut squash soup, (Yeah, I know....I'm awesome!)and she loved it! She was practicing feeding herself. She doesn't actully pick the spoon up herself, but she'll hold on to it pretty tight.
