EXCERPT:

“So, what’s on your agenda today, my dear?” Grandma asked.

“Dad and I are going to explore his new island after this,” she replied, sitting on the edge of her seat.

“Oh, yes, your father told me about that on the phone last night,” said Grandpa, then gave Sophia a serious look. “My girl, do you know why all the previous owners vanished?”

Sophia shook her head slightly, but kept watching him without blinking.

“Rumors say the place possesses some sort of magical energy. As dusk arrives, the island comes to life: boulders begin to quake, monstrous trees uproot themselves, and mysterious creatures crawl out of their homes. They will do anything to protect their island … especially from humans.”

Sophia’s eyes widened and her hands began to sweat.

“Joe, that’s enough!” Dad ordered. “You’re scaring her.”

“That was very mean of you, Joe,” Grandma added.

Grandpa chuckled. “Well, it looks like I haven’t loss my touch. You’re still that innocent girl that I used to know.”

Sophia sighed with relief. He must have been teasing.

When she was a lot younger, Grandpa used to tell her ghost stories and it would frighten her every time. The all-time best story was about an invisible spirit that watches us from behind since the day we were born. It would one day transfer our soul to a magical place when we are ready to go. He told the little girl it was time for him to go and would never return. She burst into tears and tried to convince him it wasn’t time yet. She stayed with him that whole night and never let him out of her sight.

EXCERPT:

The Wells girl covered her eyes with both hands. Margaret, ignoring the buzzing of flies and the damp heat of the morning sun, worked to untangle the girl’s words in her mind.

“If the river doesn’t take me, then I shall have my baby alone and will have to live with Master Cole, and I shall never see my dear Tom again.” With that, she burst into tears.

“You do not look like you are about to have a baby. Why do you say your time is up?”

“Master Cole brought me here four years ago. He said after I had worked for him for four years, I wouldn’t owe him a tad more, and now he says I can’t leave, and so I might as well marry him. Lady Brent. I worked hard from early morning until after dark every day, and my time is up. Even the devil would say this isn’t right.” She sniffed and looked away.

Margaret set her jaw. “Heaven help us if other masters here in Maryland treat their servants in this manner.”

“There’s nothing I can do.” She bit her lip. “I thought maybe the next time you talked with Governor Calvert you might say something on my behalf, and I pray my request is not one of cheekiness.”

“Mary.” Margaret called sharply across to the soap making group. “Would you please come here?”

When Mary finished saying something, she trotted over to the garden. “Hello, Carrie. Are you not feeling well—your face seems flushed?”

“So, you are acquainted with Carrie Wells?” Margaret studied her sister, slipped the basket from Carrie, and moved it into Mary’s hands. “She brought these for us and herbs to scent your soap.”

“Sometimes on Sundays after church Carrie walks with me in the woods and shows me barks, roots, and herbs that heal.” She glanced at the basket. “Why, these are lovely.” She glanced at the young woman, then put her hand on Carrie’s arm. “Are you still having trouble with Jacob Cole?”

“Jacob Cole is about to have troubles with her. Has Giles returned from Kent for Assembly today? Will both our brothers be at the meeting?” Margaret’s frogs roiled inside her.

How dare these men take advantage of their servants?

“I saw him and Fulke along with some other men heading to Lewger’s home earlier.”

“Come, Carrie Wells. We shall also attend Assembly.”

“But—Margaret,” Mary grabbed her arm. “Certainly, women would not be allowed—”

Margaret shrugged Mary away, snatched Carrie Wells by her hand, and stomped off down the path.

“Sister,” Mary called after her, “you must take off that filthy apron. You’re covered in soil.”

Margaret jerked it untied and slung it. “There is a difference between God’s soil and men’s dirt. Carrie Wells and I are about to sort this very thing out with all those fine gentlemen of Assembly.”

Grave Girl by Dan Padavona

Please welcome Dan Padavona author of Grave Girl

Dan Padavona will be awarding a $25 Amazon/BN GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour.

Grave Girl

by Dan Padavona

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Mystery/Thriller
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

INTERVIEW:

What or who inspired you to start writing?

 “The Name of the Wind” by Patrick Rothfuss inspired me to write my first book. Ironically, I’ve written a few dozen novels since, while Rothfuss left readers hanging by never finishing the third book in his series. Regardless, Rothfuss’s first novel might be the best fantasy I’ve ever read.

How did you come up with the idea for your novel?

“Grave Girl” is a combination of true crime and my runaway imagination, which sometimes scares me. Once I had the idea of a kidnapped girl and a noted athlete blamed for her disappearance, the characters and their traits fell into place.

What expertise do you bring to your writing?

I have college degrees in communications and meteorology, and I worked 27 years as a NOAA scientist. Including weather and storms into my novels in a realistic manner helps bring my worlds to life.

What elements are necessary components for this genre?

Certainly an air of mystery is important, but I focus more on thrills and chills. I love to dial up the fear factor when appropriate and get my readers’ hearts pumping.

What would you want your readers to know about you that might not be in your bio?

Every day, I strive to be a better person and get the most out of life. I spent too long feeling like a victim, but we all have the power to change our energy and become more positive.

As far as your writing goes, what are your future plans?

The next twelve months will be a wild ride. I’m releasing 12 novels, each about 4 to 5 weeks apart, with 6 planned novels in the Thomas Shepherd mystery series, 5 in the Logan and Scarlett serial killer series, and 1 surprise story that readers won’t expect.

If you could be one of the characters from this book, who would it be and why?

Probably LeVar. First it would be awesome to be 19 again (lol). But mainly I love his attitude and his ability to overcome adversity. Plus, he’s always the life of the party.

Do you outline your books or just start writing?

I plan my books with story beats, which are short paragraphs devoted to each chapter. Story beats help me stay organized and keep the plot and story arcs straight.

How do you maintain your creativity?

To write prolifically, you need to lead a prolific life. A diversity of experiences, including vacation time, keep my creative juices flowing. I’m always on the lookout for a story or character idea.

Are your plotting bunnies, angels or demons?

Both. They’re often demons during the meat of the story, which is when bad things tend to happen in my worlds. But the angels always win out. I love to finish stories on a positive, optimistic note, much as Dean Koontz does in many of his books.

BLURB:

Every mind holds a secret. Some are more deadly than others.

Nightshade County Sheriff Thomas Shepherd is a successful model for every law enforcement officer with autism. He leads an idyllic life in his uncle’s old home along Wolf Lake and is planning to marry private investigator Chelsey Byrd.

But when a star athlete’s girlfriend disappears while camping, everyone blames the boyfriend. He’s volatile and dangerous. Did he murder the girl and bury her in the woods?

The sheriff’s gut tells him there’s more to the story than the boyfriend is willing to admit. The more he digs into the case, the more he worries someone is hiding a dark secret.

Is the boy a killer? Or is he the next victim?

EXCERPT:

McKenzie Ossman twirled a length of blond hair around her finger and took in the stars. Here, five miles beyond Kane Grove’s city lights, the sky was a frozen portrait of fireworks. She shivered against the chill and puffed out a condensation cloud, the cold already deep enough to penetrate her bones. By morning, frost would cover the landscape.

She accepted the bottle of Jack Daniels from Marshall and sipped. This was a terrible idea. As much as she wanted to get him away from the pressures of Kane Grove University and the constant attention he received from being a future NFL draft selection, she didn’t like it when he drank. Hazel-skinned, strong, body painted with tattoos, he was a Greek god when he was sober. But lately he’d taken to drinking too often. He changed after the alcohol hit his bloodstream, turning angry and short-fused, a bomb ready to blow.

Then there was the problem of getting back to campus on his motorcycle. She couldn’t trust him to drive buzzed. Sometimes he pushed the motorcycle past eighty in the dark, her arms wrapped around his waist, Marshall one wrong move from disaster.

Marshall Prisco was the proverbial diamond in the rough. Few small college football players attracted professional scouts, yet dozens attended Kane Grove football games for the chance to see him play. A senior wide receiver, he was unstoppable on the field, too fast and strong for the poor fools tasked with covering him.

McKenzie sipped from the bottle and winced when the alcohol burned her throat. Marshall held out his hand, and she wasn’t sure she should give the bottle back to him.

Victoria & Violet by Rachel Brimble

Please welcome Rachel Brimble author of Victoria & Violet

Rachel Brimble will be awarding a $20 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour.

Victoria & Violet

by Rachel Brimble

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   Historical romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

INTERVIEW:

1. What elements are necessary components for this genre?

I think historical romance is such a popular genre because it is so transporting – therefore, it is hugely important to evoke a sense of time and place in historical fiction. Readers need to really believe they are in the Victorian, Edwardian or Tudor era. The other necessary components are deep emotion and, of course, a happy ever after that leaves readers feeling entirely satisfied and happy.

2. How did you come up with your idea for your novel?

This book and the entire series had been on my mind for about three years and last year, I knew it was time to bite the bullet. I have also held the ambition that I would one day write a novel with real characters and real events, but fear of the unknown and getting it wrong overrode my ability to start.

The pandemic changed that – if Covid has taught us anything, it’s taught us to get on with what we want to do, where we want to go etc, because you have no idea what’s around the corner!

3. As far as your writing goes, what are your future plans?

I am just finishing the book that will come after Victoria & Violet (book 2 in the Royal Maids series) and hope to send that to my editor in the next week or so. After that, I will either start writing book 3 or maybe spend some time on an Edwardian series that I have in the works. I love mixing my work up. I find it keeps me fresh, which I hope means my writing remains fresh for my readers.

4. Can you give us a sneak peek into this book?

Of course! Here is a little snippet from a scene between heroine Violet and hero James…

“She…” Violet hesitated, feeling foolish carrying out the queen’s instructions when James was quite clearly busy and not at all happy. “She suggested we take a picnic.”

“A pic…” His eyes widened before his cheeks mottled. “It’s December!”

“I can pack some hot soup and bread. It will be…fun.”

“Fun? I can’t take myself off for a picnic when there is so much to do. What on earth will the workers think of me?”

His mood made her decidedly uneasy, but she could not defer on the queen’s request. She lifted her chin. “I’m sorry, James, but if the queen commands it, we cannot refuse. Besides, it will be last time you will see me for a while.”

He dropped his hand from his hair, his dark eyes boring into hers. “What are you talking about?”

“I have to go home. My mother claims my father is ill. Not that I believe a word of it, of course. But still, I must go.”

“Your mother is exerting her power again?”

“I have little doubt.”

He exhaled heavily, his gaze softening. “Give me an hour and I will come. Where shall we meet?”

“In the folly.”

“Very well.” His gaze dropped to her lips before he reached around her toward the door and opened it. “You should go.”

He stood so close, Violet could see flecks of blue in his eyes, smell the subtle maleness of him. Her treacherous heart swelled with silly, dangerous love. She forced a smile and ducked under his arm and through the open doorway.

5. Do you belong to a critique group? If so, how does this help or hinder your writing?

I don’t belong to a group although I do have two fabulous groups of writer friends who I see regularly – however, I do have one critique partner who I have worked with for almost ten years and many books! She writes contemporary romance and I mainly concentrate on historical, but we are a great team and really rely on one another – at least, I hope she relies on me like I do her!

6. When did you first decide to submit your work? Please tell us what or who encouraged you to take this big step?

I have also wanted to write books and when my youngest daughter started school I had a ‘now or never’ moment – that first book was published in 2007 by The Wild Rose Press. The courage to submit came from my desire to be a novelist more anything else, but the encouragement definitely came from writer friends I had made online and through the Romantic Novelists Association. I recommend any aspiring writer to find their tribe – you will need their support over and over again throughout your career.

7. What is the best and worst advice you ever received? (regarding writing or publishing)

Best – “Give yourself permission to write a crappy first draft.” Julie Cohen – this changed my process entirely and quadrupled by output overnight. I still write the first draft from the beginning to the end without looking back.

Worst – “Give up now, I do not believe you will ever be published.” A chapter contest judge (2006) – 28 published books later, I am very happy that I ignored this particular piece of advice!

8. How do you maintain your creativity?

Great question! Sometimes I have no idea, haha! I think all writers have to learn their craft, but they are also born storytellers and it is the pull to tell a story that starts them off on their writing journey. That need to entertain, bring characters to life and explore issues and eras is what maintains my creativity. Time and time again, when the writing is hard, I tell myself I’m giving up and then within a few days, I’m back at the laptop.

9. Are your plotting bunnies, angels or demons?

They’re a mixed bunch! Parts of my plots have always flowed easily and others are like walking through very thick mud – novel writing is hard, no matter how prolific an author might become. Each book (at least in my experience!) presents different challenges in different ways – writing is never predictable, trust me!

10. Anything else you might want to add?

I would love any aspiring romance writers out there to consider working with me through my First Chapter Critique service! For just £30/$30, I will critique the first 3,500 words of your work in progress or completed novel as well as providing a 3-4 page report on everything from characterization and point of view to setting and dialogue.

I’d love to help make 2023 the year YOU are published!

BLURB:

When Violet Parker is told she will be Queen Victoria’s personal housemaid, she cannot believe her good fortune. She finally has the chance to escape her overbearing mother, a servant to the Duchess of Kent. Violet hopes to explore who she is and what the world has to offer without her mother’s schemes overshadowing her every thought and action.
Then she meets James Greene, assistant to the queen’s chief political adviser, Lord Melbourne. From entirely different backgrounds and social class, Violet and James should have neither need nor desire to speak to one another, yet through their service, their paths cross and their lives merge—as do their feelings.
Only Victoria’s court is not always the place for romance, but rather secrets, scandals, and conspiracies…
