Lyonesse McKenna, was dreaming or was she? From the instant Lyn saw Deacon McClain across a black jack table in a crowed Las Vegas casino the unmistakable attraction sent Lyn’s senses flying into overdrive. Her family of shapeshiters believed in soul mates. She’d always been sceptical yet she couldn’t help but question the way her heart sped when he looked at her.

When Deacon appeared in Las Vegas he knew his first job was to save Lyn from a Sea Demon, but the next order of business was to convince her he would someday mean more to her than she’d ever expected. But her stubborn nature and unbendable spirit consumed Deacon...and he had to chase away all the demons real and imagined in order to win her heart.

EXCERPT

In observation mode, he walked through the casino, hands in his pockets, listening and watching, his heart racing. Before the blackjack table at the end of the row, he paused to reflect and decide on a course of action. The air inside was sultry, hot and smoke-filled. He swept one hand through his damp hair, fresh from a summer rain. He forced his mind from the heat and the rancid smell of cigarettes, and with single-minded focus, stared at the table and the cards lying innocuously on the green felt.
The picture of cool calmness, she sat on a bar stool, a drink in hand and cards in the other, her legs crossed provocatively. Her daringly cut emerald V-neck dress didn't leave much to the imagination, but he forced his gaze to the man beyond who stared at her as if he owned her. Every hair on the back of his neck stood on end and a chill slivered down his spine, nerves on edge, muscles tensed. His brows furrowed when the man turned his attention, for one brief moment, his way.
The dealer gave her another card and she tipped one corner up to look at it then let it go. Her body language spoke volumes to him and he wondered if the dealer noticed too. The poker face she so obviously tried for was something she'd never possess.
Deacon McClain paused before settling on a bar stool across the table from her. He waited for the last hand to finish before placing his chips in front of him and nodding to the dealer he was ready to play. His fingers closed around his glass of whiskey as his heart thundered in his chest. She glanced his way, inquisitively cocking her head to one side before slanting him a sexy-as-hell-grin.
The grin sent a message that nearly catapulted him from his seat. Inhaling a deep breath to calm his splintering nerves, he turned his attention back to the cards he'd just been dealt. Not good, not good at all, he motioned for another, then sat back and gazed at Lyonesse. Lyn McKenna, the woman he'd been sent to find and bring home. He'd never believed this gig to be an easy one, but now he felt sure this might be his most difficult assignment of all. Her easy grin sent his heart into a tailspin and her long shapely legs were hard to ignore. What would happen if she gave him her full attention?
He'd lose all sense of perspective and balance.

Cast adrift after fleeing the home of Jokul, the ice demon, Atantsi, a firestarter, grew to womanhood as she moved through time to keep the demon from finding her. Though stubborn and courageous, she was ill prepared to use powers she had not been taught. Her first sight of the intoxicating Carr McKenna left her breathless, and her second encounter gave her hope for a future she never thought she had.

A playboy, a second son and a shifter, a man who thought his life would be carefree, Carr McKenna was shocked to discover the woman he’d paid as an escort is a firestarter who is running for her life. He is the leader of all the McKennas around the world and that he has multiple powers. His passion for Margo and the need to defend her might cost him his life as well as hers.

EXCERPT

What did she know about love? Nothing so this could not mean anything. It was just a precursor to sex and she was getting paid very well to let this man do anything he wanted with her. She might as well enjoy the moment and the new sensations, because she'd never felt this way.
"Let me inside, sweetheart."
She started to speak but was stopped when his tongue swept inside her mouth. Their tongues met and danced, played until she heard herself moan with pleasure. His growl came from deep inside and rumbled upward until she felt as if she knew the essence of the man.
Margo wanted more. Her hands rose and she ran her fingers through his hair. It was soft and silky. She felt her body clench and unclench and she knew she needed more than his tongue inside her mouth. But it was too soon. She didn't know who he really was and once again she forced herself to remember. Emotions about love and forever had no place in her life.
But this man had the potential to change her mind.
His fingers moved down her neck and across her shoulders. They traveled down her spine and when they moved back, she felt his fingertips on her flesh. His kiss was hot; his touch a firestorm.
Caught up in the moment, she pulled his shirt from his jeans, reveling in the feel of his skin against her hands. Melting inside she couldn't think, could only feel.
Yes, feel the flames his kiss ignited inside and the inferno his calloused fingers detonated within.
He pulled back for a moment and she cried out inside, "no, don't stop."
But he stopped so he could sweep her into his arms and carry her to the couch where his lips met hers again. Her mouth felt swollen, the mercuric heat startling her.

REVIEW:

Carin for My Reading Obsession

Sweet Sexy Sadie is a quick read with a fun plot line, Sadie is researching the migration of butterflies for her thesis she meets Brody when her car overheats in the desert pretty soon the car isn't the only thing overheating. Sadie also has a stalker of a paranormal variety.

The action happens quick and without a lot of back story to have this come out novella length. I enjoyed the chemistry that is immediate between Brody and Sadie. I liked the paranormal element to her stalker and the bond that Sadie and Brody share to overcome the trials in their path to happiness.

This time of year with the kids in school you have lots of chances to sit and wait this is the perfect length book for those times and you can get in a fun love story while you are at it.

BLURB:

From the first time Sadie’s eyes met those of Brody McKenna in the hot Sierra Madre Mountains, theirs was a potent attraction—not gentle, slow, and easy, but hot, hard, and all-consuming. The daughter of a dysfunctional family, Sadie had dreams no man could wrench from her with hot sex and an all-consuming passion. She’d challenge this alpha male with all the strength she possessed. But her red hair, fiery temperament, and indomitable spirit obsessed Brody...and he knew he had to find a way to show her he was more than he appeared and convince her to make a life with him.

EXCERPT

Sadie didn't know what to make of Brody. Exceptionally handsome and charismatic, he'd made her smile the first time she saw him sauntering down the road toward her. Good lord, but he looked as if he owned the world. Tall, tanned from the sun, amber-green eyes that sparkled as if he saw some light humor in everything. He was wiry and sleek; a quickness about him surprised her. His blue-black hair was tied back with a leather thong, his chin angular.
Perhaps he did own this part of the Sierra Madres. His family seemed to own most of this town.
Her research had brought her to this place, Cactus Junction. Now the prospect of getting to know an interesting man would be an added perk. In the bathroom she slipped out of her clothes and into a tepid shower. A few minutes later she emerged squeaky clean and ready for the next part of her adventure.
Unpacking her clothes and taking out her laptop, she opened it. What do explosive experts do?  Hmmm....
Why, they blow up things. What would he blow up around here?
Lord but that sounded crazy to her. Before typing in the necessary info to pull something up on Google, she leaned back, relaxing into her chair. The wallpaper was outdated, and the old fan complimented the air conditioning. She realized she liked the atmosphere.
Enough musing. Mining in the Sierra Madres. Let's see, it says here they mined silver as early as 1521.
Sadie scrolled down the paper. Ok… Montezuma, in 1492, was already drinking hot chocolate from goblets made of gold. Maybe she should be studying this instead of her research thesis. The migration of butterflies. Once she'd thought the topic was romantic. Chasing after butterflies…
So what are they doing now? Junior drilling companies… She wondered if that was what the McKenna Clan was, a junior company. How soon was too soon to ask? Probably not on their first dinner together. Knowledge brought power and she firmly believed everything happened for a reason. Then her chance encounter in this place was not a coincidence.
This says the companies are drilling to find the ore. So… Do they still need explosives? If not, he didn't do much for his day job. Perhaps the family had millions stashed away. At first glance this hotel was theirs and Brody had told her the land this town sat on belonged to them. But millions in the Caymans? Probably not.
She closed her laptop. Then leaning back, she shut her eyes and tried to cleanse her mind of all thought. A little catnap might be in order, but her heartbeat so fast she didn't think sleeping was a plausible scenario. Eager to meet the McKenna Clan and begin her research, her body was wound tight as a rubber band ready to snap.
The bag of chips in her purse seemed to call to her just after her stomach growled its discontent. Trying to ignore the excessive calories and her empty belly, she rose and wandered to the window. Dinner would be that much better if she waited. Outside, the sun still beat down and one could see heat waves decorate the street.
The air conditioner chose that moment to blow out cold air. Sadie wrapped her arms around herself then turned the monitor down a notch.
Back at the window she looked at the street below. A man walked down the sidewalk, and as he grew closer, he stopped and shielded his eyes then gazed up to her room. Sadie's breath caught in the back of her throat and another chill swept through her. This time it wasn't caused by the air conditioner. The sight of the man sent an eerie feeling to the pit of her stomach. She stepped back in an attempt to remove herself from his line of sight.
The knock startled her away from the window. She jumped, afraid it might be the man she'd just seen but knowing it wasn't.
"Sadie? Sadie, you in there?" Brody called from outside the door. Damn, but she'd recognize his voice anywhere. A smile crossed her face. She meant to forget the stranger.
"Come in." Sadie looked back to the street below. No one was there. Once again she rubbed her arms. She felt as if a ghost had just swept through her, leaving her cold from her core outward.
"You okay?" Brody stepped inside, looking concerned.
"No, I don't think so. I…" Pausing, she hesitated to tell him what had just happened. What she'd felt. He'd think she was crazy.

The Convenient Wedding
by Susie Warren

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
INTERVIEW:
  1. What or who inspired you to start writing?
I absolutely love to read. At some point (when I was a kid), I thought - I can write something.  As I grew up, I realized there is a tremendous amount to learn about the craft of writing. But that didn’t discourage me. I remember thinking if this is what other writers have to go through, I can do it. I enjoy immersing myself in another world and having the freedom to decide how the story will unfold.
  1. What elements are necessary components for this genre?
Beyond having a happily ever after ending, I think the most important element is the emotional journey of the characters.  Readers want to experience and relate to different emotions. I read something that helped me recently with this. It’s the concept that emotions can be thought of as energy moving throughout the story. Understanding the movement has helped me to keep the threads of the story connected.
  1. How did you come up with your idea for your novel?
Often my story ideas begin with a visual image. It could be while traveling and looking at a different landscape or seeing an interesting photograph of a city. After considering who would live and work in that landscape, I think about the characters and the possible challenges they could face. With The Convenient Wedding, I purchased a coffee table book with images of loft style apartments in New York and Connecticut. I thought about who would be drawn to living in a loft apartment.  I imagined an architect would convert an old warehouse into loft apartments and when he wanted a new challenge then he would get into a last minute election for Congress. The challenge was coming up with the woman that would inspire him to let down his defenses and begin to trust.
  1. What expertise did you bring to your writing?
I’ve worked for years in a small independent school as the financial person. It’s quite a challenge keeping the school on a solid financial footing. I handle all of the business tasks but at heart I’m a writer. In terms of my day job, I write reports, emails, promotional pieces but I’m not sure the skills I bring to my day job translate into writing fiction. I do attend writing conferences, am part of a critique group and read books on the craft of writing.
  1. What would you want your readers to know about you that might not be in your bio?
I grew up in large Irish family with five dynamic brothers. So in many ways, men are not a mystery to me. When I had my children, I worried that I would have only boys but I ended up with two daughters and one son. I always tell my girls that they are extraordinarily lucky to have each other and my son always pipes in with, “You were lucky. I want five brothers.” I realize now, I was lucky!
  1. As far as your writing goes, what are your future plans?
I’m finishing up a series this summer and plan to launch a completely new idea for a series in the fall. I haven’t let myself work on the outline yet as I need to finish my sixth book (the 3rd novel in The Bolles Dynasty).
  1. If you could be one of the characters from this book, who would it be and why?
I’m not sure that I would want to be. As a writer, I throw huge issues and problems at my characters. They have so much to learn and ragged edges that need growth.
  1. Can you give us a sneak peek into this book?
I enjoyed writing The Convenient Wedding. The basic premise explores how the characters achieve their goals while being throw into a marriage of convenience. Being stuck together in the political spotlight requires them to begin to rely on each other. Here is a short excerpt:
Later that evening, they left the hotel by limousine. Climbing out of the car, Anderson held her upper arm firmly and said in a low voice, “Just follow my lead tonight. Remember we are very much in love. And I adore you.”
Lucia turned and looked into his eyes, “I’m not sure that we are doing the right thing. This could backfire on us.” She became conscious of people watching them. They were dressed in formal attire and standing close to one another on the sidewalk, bystanders were slowing down and looking at them.
“You look beautiful, bella.” he murmured. “And I worship the ground that you walk on.” He put his hand behind her head and claimed her mouth in a show of passion. Anger flashed through her body and she bit down on his lower lip. He let go of her and stepped back. She could see a flash of indignation in his sharp gaze.
“I’m not your puppet. And I’ll not be ordered around.” Lucia contradicted him.
She could see a few reporters hanging around the entrance to the hotel, less than fifty feet from them.
Anderson planted his feet wide and stood before her. “I didn’t suggest you were. But we are in this together and you have reasons of your own not to allow our association to dissolve into tabloid fodder. Don’t push me too far or I’ll walk away without a backward glance.”
Her eyes clashed with his until he broke the standoff and escorted her into the hotel.
  1. Do you belong to a critique group? If so how does this help or hinder your writing?
I belong to a critique group for women fiction writers. The challenge is that it is not focused on romance writing but it is very helpful in terms of critiquing other elements of storytelling. The downside is that it is an investment of time but the upside is that I’ve gained enormous insight into my writing. For example, I often show and tell (instead of show not tell) and the group finally got me to the place of understanding that I should trust the reader and not feel like I have to ‘tell’ everything.
  1. When did you first decide to submit your work? Please tell us what or who encouraged you to take this big step?
I had sent off a manuscript to a publisher and waited for months, only to receive a rejection.
I met another writer ten years ago at a writing conference, Christina Tetreault, and she encouraged and supported me in making the leap of faith to self-publish. At this point, she had figured out the process on her own and was quite successful. I would have continued sending it out and waiting. The process of self-publishing has been many things – scary, exhilarating, overwhelming, positive and affirming. I’m very grateful to her for knowing when to encourage and when to offer support.
  1. What is the best and worst advice you ever received? (Regarding writing or publishing)
I haven’t received bad advice that I’m aware of anyway. In general, romance writers are savvy, encouraging and rather friendly.  I’ve been to many conferences and workshops where advice is shared openly. The best advice I‘ve received is to keep writing and putting out the best book possible and not to worry about small setbacks or criticisms along the way. I plan on having a very long writing career and understand that it is about each book and each reader.
  1. Do you outline your books or just start writing?
I outline and sketch out the plot before sitting down to write. When I just wrote, I didn’t finish novels. I would always have a new idea and would make huge changes to the storyline and then it would necessitate more changes.  The cycle was endless.
  1. How do you maintain your creativity?
I’m not sure. I always have new story ideas and not quite enough time to write them. While working on a project, I’ll put new ideas in a file until I finish the novel I’m working on. I also think going to conferences to listen to new ideas is helpful. Writers need to keep growing and challenging themselves.
  1. Who is your favorite character in the book? Can you tell us why?
My favorite character is the heroine, Lucia Montgomery.  She has to struggle to figure out how to survive a political marriage as she becomes emotionally involved with the hero. During the novel, she is challenged to remain loyal to Anderson while having to deal with the daily realities of the campaign. In the end, she has to decide if her commitment to Anderson is worth risking her heart and soul or if she should walk away once the election is over.
  1. Are your plotting bunnies angels or demons?
I like plotting so I’ll say angels.
BLURB:
The Convenient Wedding
Lucia Montgomery is from an old and powerful political family in Connecticut and desperately wants to shed her reputation as a superficial socialite. Against her family’s wishes, she seeks a position working for a fiercely contested political campaign and the dark horse in the race, Anderson Adams. She is thrown into the middle of a scandal of her own making when she is tricked into going to his hotel room. Anderson persuades her to play along with a pretend engagement then an actual wedding to save her reputation and his campaign. The media falls in love with the charismatic couple and they must figure out how to reconcile their public image with their private life.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:

Lucia Montgomery knew failure was a likely outcome of the evening’s celebration. Looking around at the glittering social elite clamoring for her grandfather’s attention, she wanted to make her escape. But instead she held her ground. Taking a sip of chilled champagne, she waited for the evening to unfold. She smiled openly at anyone who approached her and exchanged pleasantries waiting for her moment.

Anderson Adams was scheduled to appear this evening and she was waiting to make a pitch to the recently nominated candidate. Tonight was all about getting the party elite behind the last minute candidate, he was largely seen as the underdog in the race. She was hoping her public relations experience and skills would grant her access to this campaign. Her grandfather had mentioned that he would use his influence in the party to insist on an interview but she wanted to make her own way. The fact that her grandfather was the past governor of the state was enough pressure without him calling in favors.

Her grandfather’s mansion was showcased beautifully this evening; the unseasonably warm late April evening in Hartford allowed the numerous sets of doors to be left open to the landscaped back yard. Candles and lanterns illuminated the gardens and allowed for an easy flow of guests from inside the formally decorated spaces to the vast terraces and lawns.

Lucia watched her aunt dance with an older gentleman and took another sip of champagne. She would need to limit herself to the one glass of the chilled indulgence. It was critical that she had her wits about her when she approached the recently chosen candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives. He held the key to her launching a public relations firm on the east coast. If she could convince him to hire her then his tightly contested election bid would catapult her ahead of countless firms and talented individuals. She needed to escape her life in California and all the recent humiliation surrounding her broken engagement. A job with Anderson Adams would allow her to land on her feet and not have to explain her complete professional and personal melt down.

She walked out into the garden and reminded herself not to think about past mistakes. It would destroy her confidence and prevent her from positively pitching her ideas to Anderson Adams. Her family was well-connected politically and she had the poise and skills to run an effective public relations campaign. She knew how to make things happen and control the communication in such a way that she could help a candidate get elected. The challenge of helping with a campaign for the House of Representatives filled her with enthusiasm and direction.
