Jacey’s Wax Museum

Jacey has been working hard for the past 6 weeks or so, learning all she could about Clara Barton for their class wax museum.  The idea is that the students read a biography, and then dress up as the person they studied and give a little presentation, as if portraying that person in a wax museum.

Jacey read several books about Clara Barton and wrote a book report and display board.  One of the things she wrote in her book report is that she learned from Clara Barton’s example that one person can make a big difference, and that working hard and being dedicated will help you reach your goals.  I’d say those are pretty good take-aways from this assignment.

She worked hard to memorize the little speech she gave for the actual wax museum day.  I went and saw her presentation, along with Will, Calvin, both Grandmas, Marie, and Heather.  She felt very loved and supported!  And she did a great job.  I think she made an adorable Clara Barton!  There were a lot of“wax figures” in her class who did a really great job, but I think Jacey was the best.  :)

Valentine’s Morning

Snapped a few pictures right before the girls headed out the door on Valentine’s Day.

DSC_5316 Londyn, ready to head out the door.  She got this shirt for Christmas and has been “saving” it for Valentine’s Day.  She lost her second tooth the night before (she actually let me pull it out).  The first one, she lost on Christmas day.  A new holiday tradition for her?  Two front teeth for Easter?

DSC_5305 Jacey with her Valentine’s box.  I generally hate these type of assignments/projects.  Meaning, the kind that take up a ton of time, resources, and require more effort by the parents than the children.  Oh, and have no educational value whatsoever.  Luckily, Jacey was smart enough to NOT ask me for help, but went straight to Will instead.  Will is the creative one, and yes he knows how to navigate Pinterest.  I guess their efforts were worth it, since she came home with this:

photoThe award for the most creative box.  Which is, I think, what she was hoping for all along.

And just because we can’t leave him out -

DSC_5310DSC_5322No special Valentine’s plans for this boy.  He stayed home with me and “helped” me make sugar cookies.  I’m not a fan of Valentine’s Day on principle, but I have no objection to sugar cookies, regardless of the reason.  :)

Londyn’s Operetta

The kindergarten classes at Londyn’s school have been working hard for a long time on their annual Operetta.  This year’s performance was “Peter Pan.”  This week was the big performance - they did a daytime performance for the whole school (which Jacey described as “pretty awesome”), and an evening performance for families.

DSC_5280 Londyn was a Pirate Singer and a narrator.  She was so excited to get to perform, and equally excited that her Grandparents could come.  She did an awesome job!  She learned her lines perfectly and all of the songs by heart.  And it was helpful that she was a head taller than most of the other students, so we could see her over all the other mom’s and dad’s heads.  :)

Londyn looks so . . . grown up to me lately.  And seeing her up there on stage kind of confirmed it.  It’s always a little bit surreal when I see my kids demonstrating things that I had no part in teaching them.  It’s another little piece of evidence that they are out of my care for so much of their day, and are learning so many things that I’m not a part of.  It’s bittersweet.  But mostly sweet.  I love that Londyn is becoming a big kid – learning and growing and changing.  And although I wouldn’t mind if she never grew up (a la Peter Pan), it is still fun for me to see the spunky, smart, funny little girl she is turning into.
