Movie Review: Flowers of War

Thanks to OMY for the invite to movie preview of Flowers of War at Shaw Preview Theatre!

Flowers of War is perhaps the best film I have seen in recent years. Although the movie was close to 2.5 hours long, I was engrossed in the movie for the entire period.

The plot was set in NanKing during the NanKing massacre. China and Japan were at war and the Westerners were the only people who were unscathed. A westerner ended up in a church with a group of church girls and the famous courtesans.

The story unfolds as the westerner posed as a priest to lead the girls and women to safety.

I particularly like the way the film developed through the perspective of a church girl. How everything was portrayed through the stained glass in the church. Everyone who peeped through it shared a connection in the story.

The movie has a human touch to it and helps to lift certain stereotypes which we have for certain groups of people even up till today. Sacrifice, in my opinion, was the thread which joined the different parts of the movie together. In times of war, some people are willing to sacrifice themselves for the safety of others in return.

Thumbs up for the movie! A worthy catch! Here's the trailer of the movie. :)

the almighty

if there's something i need so badly but you are reluctant to extend.
if i put my heart into doing something yet the outcome is nothing near desirable.
if all i need is hope amidst despondency but bleakness is all i see.
if day by day part of me falls apart even if i try to hold them together real hard.

the one above, what can i do if this is what you see. sometimes i tell myself, i am going through all these for i will emerge stronger at the end of the day. ironically, i feel weaker the more of it i see. squeezing every bit of positivity left in me to see me through this course.

miracles do happen. it does.

sometimes i ponder.. could it be that i had wished upon too many shooting stars back in thailand that whoever's in charge is discounting the magic which it can do.

i must say i wasn't greedy. for every shooting star i saw, i made only one wish.
but i'd seen over 15..

ownership

taking some time off my sleep to update this space. yes, we're talking about ownership and i deem this act as displaying ownership :)

another week into school, i started feeling the lethargy since monday. kinda relieved that the toughest day of the week (tuesday) for me has passed and it's mid-week tomorrow. so i was all geared up to update this space but we always get carried away/busy unknowingly.

the most embarrassing happened to me in the staff toilet on monday. i dropped my book on the floor, slipping through the gap, it went all the way into the cubicle. -.- the cubicle was occupied. my face was OMG and i didnt know what to do.

cant possibly stick my hand in between the gap and pull my book out eh? so i waited for this kind soul to reach for my book and pass it out through the gap to me. very awkward moment i must say. good thing we both could not see each other.

i've been quite a bookworm lately. re-read "the kite runner", finished "my friend leonard" and now i am halfway into "have a little faith". enjoy reading good books, shall leave some quotes soon!

other time was spent burying my head in the newspaper, keeping myself abreast of current affairs. GE has been taking up many pages of the papers recently. with nomination day just two days away and polling day less than 2 weeks ahead, the whole political debate spices up each day closer to 7th may.

shall delve into the above-mentioned in the next few posts.

on the side note, good news for the users of malaysia's NS expressway! no more hidden speed traps or road blocks. motorists will be warned of such 'activities' before entering danger zone. people who drive long distance into malaysia using the highway will understand the pain. the need to constantly look out for hidden traps. with this improvement, road users will have a more pleasant journey! terima kasih.

shall leave it as this for now. back for more updates soon! SLEEP.

6 Important Life Lessons

read on facebook this very amusing yet sensical lessons of life. it is from funcage.com. going to be wordy but it's worth a read!

Lesson 1: Naked Wife
A man is getting into the shower just as his wife is finishing up her shower when the doorbell rings. The wife quickly wraps herself in a towel and runs downstairs. When she opens the door, there stands Bob, the next door neighbor. Before she says a word, Bob says, “I’ll give you $800 to drop that towel.” After thinking for a moment, the woman drops her towel and stands naked in front of Bob.
After a few seconds, Bob hands her $800 dollars and leaves. The woman wraps back up in the towel and goes back upstairs. When she gets to the bathroom, her husband asks,…
“Who was that?” “It was Bob the next door neighbor,” she replies. “Great!” the husband says, “Did he say anything about the $800 he owes me?”

Moral of the story:
If you share critical information pertaining to credit and risk with your shareholders in time, you may be in a position to prevent avoidable exposure.

Lesson 2
A sales rep, an administration clerk, and the manager are walking to lunch when they find an antique oil lamp. They rub it and a Genie comes out. The Genie says, “I’ll give each of you just one wish” “Me first! Me first!” says the administration clerk. “I want to be in the Bahamas, driving a speedboat, without a care in the world.” Poof! She’s gone. “Me next! Me next!” says the sales rep. “I want to be in Hawaii, relaxing on the beach with my personal masseuse, an endless supply of Pina Coladas and the love of my life.” Poof! He’s gone. “OK, you’re up,” the Genie says to the manager. The manager says, “I want those two back in the office after lunch.”

Moral of the story: Always let your boss have the first say.

Lesson 3
A priest offered a lift to a Nun. She got in and crossed her legs, forcing her gown to reveal a leg. The priest nearly had an accident. After controlling the car, he stealthily slid his hand up her leg. The nun said,”Father, remember Psalm 129?” The priest removed his hand. But,changing gears, he let his hand slide up her leg again. The nun once again said, “Father, remember Psalm 129?” The priest apologized “Sorry sister but the flesh is weak.” Arriving at the convent, the nun went on her way. On his arrival at the church, the priest rushed to look up Psalm 129. It said, “Go forth and seek, further up, you will find glory.”

Moral of the story: If you are not well informed in your job, you might miss a great opportunity.

Lesson 4
A crow was sitting on a tree, doing nothing all day. A rabbit asked him,”Can I also sit like you and do nothing all day long?” The crow answered: “Sure, why not.” So, the rabbit sat on the ground below the crow, and rested.
A fox jumped on the rabbit and ate it.

Moral of the story: To be sitting and doing nothing, you must be sitting very high up.

Lesson 5: Power of Charisma
A turkey was chatting with a bull “I would love to be able to get to the top of that tree,” sighed the turkey, but I haven’t got the energy.” “Well, why don’t you nibble on my droppings?” replied the bull. “They’re packed with nutrients.” The turkey pecked at a lump of dung and found that it gave him enough strength to reach the lowest branch of the tree. The next day, after eating some more dung, he reached the second branch. Finally after a fourth night, there he was proudly perched at the top of the tree. Soon he was spotted by a farmer, who shot the turkey out of the tree.

Moral of the story: Bullshit might get you to the top, but it wont keep you there.

Lesson 6
A little bird was flying south for the winter. It was so cold the bird froze and fell to the ground into a large field. While he was lying there, a cow came by and dropped some dung on him. As the frozen bird lay there in the pile of cow dung, he began to realize how warm he was. The dung was actually thawing him out! He lay there all warm and happy, and soon began to sing for joy. A passing cat heard the bird singing and came to investigate. Following the sound, the cat discovered the bird under the pile of cow dung, and promptly dug him out and ate him.

Moral of the story:
1. Not everyone who shits on you is your enemy
2. Not everyone who gets you out of shit is your friend
3. And when you’re in deep shit, it’s best to keep your mouth shut!

funny yet true to the very last word. creative people out there!

no return

i chanced upon nus admission page and read about the various faqs for law and dentistry faculty. dentistry. almost 2 years ago, i stepped into the interview room, all jittery.

when i was in the room, i sat on a chair against a panel of 3 interviewers. the ladies were smiling but the guy gave a glum face. the interview started off rocky and midway through the interview i knew i screwed up the interview. the ladies were really nice but i was grilled badly by the male professor.

as i left the interview room, i cant help but to feel a sense of relief. owning to the fact that i ended a grilling session and i could finally breathe properly. wasnt a good sign for any interview and yes the result came back negative.

i didnt attempt to appeal, could have. i told myself, dentistry is highly selective and i should be contented to be shortlisted for interview and the manual dexterity test. that alone is somewhat an accomplishment, at least i did not give up. however, not appealing might have been my deepest regret for i did not try and so i wont know what could have been the outcome.

so i stumbled upon the faqs for dentistry and law, a common question was asked but it fetched different answers from both faculties.

I was invited to attend the interview and test last year but was not offered a place in Law. Can I re-apply?
An unsuccessful applicant can always reapply. However, he/she will have to compete with the same cohort of applicants for a place in Law.

I came for the interview last year but was not offered a place in Dentistry. Can I re-apply?
NUS policy is that a student can be offered only one chance at an interview at a Faculty. So, if you have not been selected after a previous interview for admission to Dentistry, you cannot apply for this same course.

yes highly selectively. my year, the number of students admitted to dentistry was 44.

and this question appeared:
Is there a fixed number of vacancies available each year?
From 2009, the enrollment to Dentistry has been increased from 44 students to 48 students per academic year.

aww, the pain. 4 more students and the intake will see a gradual increase in years to come. if only this came early.

i thought i have gotten over it but it somehow hits me again. it's really time to move on and i am genuinely happy about my current course of study. i should to learn how to stop thinking about 'could-have's. :)

ramble(s)

so a week or so passed and there isn't much highlight. unless getting leg cramp while swimming is considered as one! since we are at it, might as well give you some insight on my amazing experience.

it was one of my feeble attempt to get out of house, healthy lifestyle in practice! set myself a somewhat praiseworthy target of 36 laps given the fact that my last session was more than 6 months ago.

all was well, determination and perservance thrived! not until the 32nd lap when i attempted the ripple (or dolphin). that killed me instantly. could feel the cramp taking full effect as i quickly kicked, one-legged, myself to the side of the pool.

i supposed it wasnt life-threatening at all since the lifeguards didnt even take a second look at me. (wait, did they even look?) so there i was, at the side of the pool, looking constipated trying to treat my calf. the agony was beyond words, at that instant i regretted my foolish attempt at ripple!

aftermath of the cramp was lingering pain! yes, it's called lingering pain for a reason. it refused to subside and i was refrained from exercising. my calf threatened to cramp when it felt that more than enough force was exerted.

so healthy lifestyle was abolished for quite a few days! my leg seems fine now, perhaps time to resume exercising instead of rotting away.

on a sidenote, there's another incident which is blog-worthy! was with mum at ntuc, in the queue for cashier. 2 aunties done with their shopping and payment were standing, criticizing fairprice.

aunties: this ntuc so lao ya (lousy) one.. cant even cash back!
the cashier walked off to attend to something else leaving the counter empty.

one of the aunties conveniently reached for the hooks where they hang the plastic bags and took a stack of plastic bags home for herself.

upon seeing her fellow friend's courageous feat, the other aunty asked "why you never take for me?"

what more can i say, ugly singaporeans! faintz.

dazzling city lights

the night never fails to call for random thoughts.
blurred image has its beauty.
for some things, we should just leave them as it is. don't draw too clear a line; blur is beautiful.

wake

some vacancy is, perhaps, better left unfilled. what are the chances that history will not repeat itself? take it slow, take it slowly. we're all in this game of life together, but alone.
