Let the Holidays Begin

It is official...the Holidays have begun. The kids are out of school and I am home from work. The kids feel like they did just fine on their finals and work should do ok without me for 10 days, but I remain on call if they can't.

Chris and I are completely done with Christmas shopping. Most was done in early December, but there are always those last few things that need to be completed. I think we purchased our final gift on Wednesday night. We don't have any specific plans for the week, but I am certain there is plenty to knock off of my honey-do list. We will experience a first this year with Christmas: We will have to share Indy with her BFF, Joe, and his family for a few hours on Christmas Day. She is participating in their family gift exchange; she drew Joe's dad.

We're all looking forward to a delayed Surf & Turf Christmas dinner. Usually we have that instead of turkey on Thanksgiving, but this year we had company so we did a deep fried turkey. The Alaskan King Crab legs we bought could barely fit sideways on the freezer shelf they are so big! Chris even bought new clawcrackers thinking our old ones wouldn't be heavy duty enough.

2007’s Funniest Moment

Let’s set this up: Indy, Mariah & Chrissie went to church with Grammy. Chrissie thought Mariah would rejoin them after Sunday School before Communion. Wrong. Indy & Chrissie watch in fascinated horror as the scene unfolds. Here’s a play by play of how it went down for your enjoyment:

Chrissie: Oh No, Mariah’s whole class is going up by themselves for communion! She doesn’t know it’s wine!
Indy: Gasps in horrified delight and starts giggling already
Chrissie: Surely they are too young to take communion. They will all fold their arms for a blessing. Oh man, I should have warned Mariah to fold her arms!
Indy: Giggling louder and pointing out all the kids with their hands ready to receive the wafer.
Chrissie: Eyes focused on her youngest’s every movement, willing her to look at her mother so she could motion to her to fold her arms over her chest for a blessing: Oh Good - Look! Her friend is telling her to fold her arms…whew!!!
Indy: No, they’re just holding their Webkinz at the alter for communion too!!!!! Really laughing now.
Chrissie: She snuck her Webkinz in?! I didn’t even see the thing! Oh No! She took a wafer!
Indy: Oh Geez….this is going to be good! Both not able to even contain the laughing now, even though we were bent double and trying to hide it!
Indy: Gasps out: Wait until she tastes it!
Chrissie: Maybe everyone will dip. Surely they have 9 yr olds dip their wafer, right?! Mariah’s still holding her wafer. Yep, she’s definitely gonna dip.
Indy: Yeah, they probably will. Secret smile of glee on her face waiting for the moment Mariah tastes wine and realizes what she’s done

The Chalice Bearer approaches Mariah, who upon seeing such a lovely silver goblet before her very eyes, stashes the wafer, reaches up and pulls that sucker in for a big ol’ swig!!!!!! You should have seen the shock on the lady’s face and how she valiantly tried to pull it back and save enough wine for the next 9 yr old to have some too!!!!! It was FUNNY!

Indy & Chrissie: Dying of laughter now….pretty sure the whole church is looking at the crazy Mormons laughing their heads off that their youngest has her mouth full of nasty wine and doesn’t know what to do about it.
Indy: Can barely speak: Do you see her face? Do you see her face?!
Chrissie: Gasping for air: I hope she doesn’t spit it out!!!
Mariah: Cheeks completely puffed out, looks around and with a look of disgust and near tears swallows with an almost audible gulp!
Chrissie: Gales of laughter now: Look at how she’s nibbling the wafer trying to get rid of the taste! Mariah is breaking off tiny pieces of the wafer and chewing madly
Indy & Chrissie: Laughing completely uncontrollably now.

Mariah and her class return to their Sunday School room.
A few minutes later, church is out, and Chrissie grabbed a cup of lemonade and went to pick up Mariah. (See? I’m not so bad!) Mariah thankfully grabs the lemonade and chugs it down. Chrissie waits for it, she waits for it….and…..

Chrissie: So what did you think of the wine?!
Mariah: Big fat tears in her eyes, wails: I THOUGHT IT WAS GRAPE JUICE!!! IT WAS DISGUSTING!!!!!!
Chrissie: Why did you take so much?!
Mariah: I WAS THIRSTY!!!!
Indy: Trying not to laugh: Poor Mariah!!!
Mariah: I’m not crying, I’m not crying. It’s just my allergies!!!

As we were walking to the car:

Chrissie: So, did you like the wafer?
Mariah: Chin trembling and wobbly voice - It was BAD too but at least it got the horrible taste out!
Indy & Chrissie: Burst into laughter, could barely walk to the car, tears streaming down our face…
Mariah: Cried all the way home.
Chrissie: Are you mad at me for laughing at you?
Mariah: YES!!!!!
Chrissie: Still laughing – I know I am a terrible mother! Can I tell Daddy about it?!
Mariah: NO!!
Chrissie: Walks in the door…..Hey Mike! Guess what happened at church today?!!!!!!

3) Dreaming for three nights in a row she was a man. (A nerdy geeky guy giving a presentation complete with a pointer stick laser thingy, a gross slobby man with cheetoh-covered fingers; and a black drug dealer man with huge afro running away really fast, which made her conclude to herself in the dream that black people really do run faster than white people!)

Personal Comment: Pain Meds are worth their weight in gold and they give you really interesting dreams!

Stuff

Scout Tree Lot

Gib’s photo has been in the newspaper from the first day the troop opened its 3 Christmas Tree Lots. Gib, Mike and I all worked a double shift (8 hrs) the Friday after Thanksgiving and The Tennessean sent out a photographer to our location. Gib, Mike and another scout ended up in the papers – a few times! A neighbor finally called and jokingly exclaimed that she couldn’t open the paper without seeing one of us! This is the 28th year the Troop has sold the Christmas Trees and it’s a huge fundraising effort. Each scout must work four 4 hr shifts, along with a parent doing the same, to make it work. In return, the scout gets opportunities to do a lot of fun things at a much reduced price. The scouts who work all their shifts will get to go to Climb Nashville (rock climbing place) and the boys will have a lock-in overnight party. They’ll climb the walls, literally, eat pizza and junk and have a great time. Also, a trip available first to scouts who worked the tree lots is a North Carolina ski trip in February. Gib has never been skiing and I’m really excited he’ll have this opportunity. The cost to us will be a couple hundred, but wow, to be able to go skiing for a 3 day weekend, equipment, food, hotel, lessons, all included?! It amazes me that this Troop has the ability to do these kinds of things for the boys, and provide a wonderful Scouting experience that they will always remember.

Big Plans for Santa

The kids have big plans for Santa. It will be a nice Christmas, the first in our new home together. Getting out the decorations and finding all our Christmas boxes wasn’t easy. Moving is such a pain. But we finally finished decorating (we are pretty sure it’s everything). I’m happy with the way the Christmas lights turned out in the front yard – it’s simple, but I worked with what we had, and only had to buy a couple things to make what we used to have for our other house work here. We put the Christmas tree in-between the dining room and living room and are really enjoying the atmosphere, the twinkling lights, and the excitement when new presents find their way under the tree. The cats like the tree too!

Playoffs Looming

We’re in the final weeks of regular season NFL. It’s been fun this year to dominate in our football pool! I’m currently in 3rd, after a brief stint in the number two spot. Mike had a hurtful week where he went from 1st to 3rd and he is now back in 2nd, one point ahead of me. I was sad that Green Bay didn’t have a Thanksgiving win against the Cowboys – I went against the favored winner and lost some big points. I do really like Dallas though; I just wanted to see the Packers come out with a W on that match up. What a great season Farve is having; and how great is it for Dallas to have a QB and a team that can, potentially, win a Super Bowl. I LOVE Super Bowl days. Last year it was kind of ruined for me, so I am NOT letting that happen again!!!

Mid State Band Audition

Gib and Chrissie got up at 5:45 a.m. so Gib could audition to be in the Mid-State band. We were told that this process could potentially take ALL day, and registration officially started at 8:50 a.m., but we were advised to arrive around 7 am. Since Gib and I were selling trees at the boy scout lot again today at noon, they wanted to get in near the front of the line. So off they went, loaded with food, drinks, a snare drum, sticks, books to read, and Gib's piece of music. They got there at 6:50 am, found the piece of paper on the wall that said Percussion Registration and there was NOBODY there! YAHOO! They're #1!!!!!! That meant no waiting to audition - which was estimated to take 10-15 minutes per person. So if you were #12, best case, you were waiting 2 hrs. 120 percussionists were expected to register. It was 15 minutes before anyone joined them. H was in 9th grade and turns out he went to Gib's middle school last year and made it in the Mid-State band which is quite an honor. So he asked Gib what his secondary focus is gonna be. Gib was SUPPOSED to bring his mallets and timpani music too. You have to audition on TWO instruments. A little panic and nerves, but Gib thought one of his buddies would be doing the timpani piece and he could borrow their sheet music and mallets. It was about an hour before they found any friends, turns out it is one of Gib's buddies from school who has an extra sheet of the timpani music. Along comes a 3rd band buddy, who is happy to lend his mallets.

They got registered, Gib got Ticket #1, and then they headed to the 3 auditioning rooms (you have to go from one to the other for fundamentals &sight reading, your first focus instrument and your secondary). Once there our friend came in handy again because he spotted the music on the wall by the door and noticed they had changed some things. Auditioning was CHAOTIC, getting to the room, breaking thru the line of 200 woodwind people waiting to get registered and then trying to hear your number called, battle you way thru with your snare drum, sticks, music, and stuff 3 TIMES thru three different doorways.

We won't know until they post results on the internet around 11 pm tonight. There were an awful lot of people auditioning for a handful of spots, but Gib had a good audition and he didn't make any major mistakes, so he felt great about that. Chrissie figured just the opportunity to audition has benefits all of its own and the experience is valuable. One thing he learned right off was to make sure you have EVERYTHING you need! And they learned the early bird is definitely rewarded. Last year, some people didn't audition until after 8 pm. Wow. Our neighbors who didn't want to get up early and carpool with them were #80 in line for clarinets. Ouch. Wonder if they're home yet? Gib and Chrissie got home at 10:00 a.m.

Hayward, California

More early history... After flying to California with Marie... Hayward, California is the next place I remember, although I know we lived in Oakland briefly before it. We lived in a white house with a detached garage. My mother Marie had remarried, Craig. I dont remember the wedding, but I remember being in the sealing room of the Oakland Temple when we were sealed. We lived on a dead end street that had what we called a creek. It was really a man made waterway to handle storm water. There was not often more than a small stream of water running through it and we kids would climb the fence and climb down the ladder into the creek and play down there, probably not the safest thing to do, but we are all still here. Craig had also built us a fort in the backyard. Nothing exciting really, a square box on "stilts" not in a tree. It had a small ladder underneath that went up to a trap door for entry. I learned to ride my first bike here. Craig was all about building things, a machine mechanic/electrician by trade. He would go to junkyards and get old bike parts and make bikes for us kids. They were sometimes cool and sometimes weird, but no one else ever had a bike like ours.

Wedding Day, Craig & Marie

Craig at the time had just gotten out of the Navy and was working for Continental Can Company, I remember the CCC logo. Fred, my natural father, visited us on occasion. I only remember being with him once, he had given Ron, Carl, and I some new pajamas. I dont recall seeing or hearing from Fred again until after I was 18. He was still in the Navy and had received orders to Vietnam. His thoughts at the time were that Marie was making it difficult for him to see us and that it would be in our best interest to think of Craig as our dad, so he gave up his custody and visitation rights.

We lived in Hayward until I was five. I remember my fifth birthday becuase I was sick with a fever and my birthday party got canceled. I do remember eating a piece of cake though. Even though I turned five in Hayward, I was not old enough to enter Kindergarten that year. I remember wanting to be in school like my brothers and "borrowed" one of their math books and started answering all the addition problems I could find. Maybe that is where the math skills began.

Backyard.....

We are past the age of kids really playing in the backyard, and Lynda likes to garden, so we decided to redo the hill of a backyard we have. Because Lynda has difficult time walking on uneven ground we are putting in stack stone walls to terrace the terrain and create some planting areas. Also there will be another patio in the back corner behind the terraces and stairs will be put in between the levels. Work in progress...

Deep Fried

Thanksgiving has come and gone. We had two guests for the holiday. Chrissie's grandfather came in from San Diego and her uncle came down from Louisville. We hired out the cooking of our Turkey this year. We wanted to try a deep fried turkey but did not want to risk burning down the house. We found a BBQ place in town that you could order a deep fried turkey from and have it ready when you wanted, so thats what we did. It was good, but I dont think it lived up to the hype I have heard regarding fried turkey's. Other than the afternoon feast, it was a day of watching football and chatting, not much else. Friday kicked off Gib's scout troop fundraiser of selling Christmas Trees. The troop operates three sales lots around town and each boy is asked to work four shifts, also, one parent of each family is expected to work four shifts. Gib, Chrissie, and I did a double shift on Friday. The Tennessean sent a photographer down to the lot we were working to take pictures for the paper, well Gib and I made the news...

Gib, a Boy Scout, helps Alex Cornette choose a Christmas tree behind the Church of Christ on the lot's opening day, Nov. 23.

Nicholas, 15, a Boy Scout, sets up a Christmas tree for display in the parking lot behind the Church of Christ. Mike, the father of Scout Gib, helped him.

College preview.....Say what???!!!!

Yes, we attended our first college preview day with Indy on the 17th. While she is still a junior, going to college now days requires careful planning and resume building. It is much more complicated than when I went to college. It was both exciting and unsettling for me at the same time. It was amazing to see all the opportunities, work, and fun this can be for Indy, yet, it startles me how soon she will be out on her own. The college we went to was a small, approx 4500 students, private college here in TN, definately on her short list, but not necessarily the top just yet. Indy would prefer a school this size, she doesnt want to be just another number amongst 1000's. Chrissie and Indy are working on scheduling the where and when for the next one. I dont think it will be until spring. And then, just as we finish up with Indy, Taryn wil be right in the thick of it. In fact, Chrissie has already started giving Taryn school brochures to peruse. Why does it seem in retrospect that time flies??? Where did all the years go.....

Recovery Complete

Indy took a full two weeks to recover from her tonsilectomy. She returned to school on Monday the 19th. I think her voice has changed slightly. She insists that it is back to normal. She is now working on getting back up to speed on her school work. She did some while she was home, but still has some exams to complete. I found it great to have her around the house for the full two weeks. It gave Chrissie and I an opportunity to talk and be with her more than her usual school, social, and work schedule permits. The one drawback to the whole scenario, is that I had to get up and drive Taryn to seminary each morning. Chrissie's drawback was that she had to get up 2 or 3 times a night to administer the "narcotic" pain medication. Isn't it wonderful to have modern medicine make life a little easier after these type of surgeries.

Soldier Pen Pal

PFC Steven John Christofferson November 2007

Dear PFC Christofferson,

Apparently, there has been a change of the list of soldiers with your company since we were first given somebody to write to. So, now we get you! This letter has some parts from the first letter mailed to Lt. Hardin, since I can only think of so many things to say about us! I hope you don’t mind. I’ve also written a new letter, also in this envelope, so you’ll get it all together. I hope you enjoy getting to know a little about our family.

November 3, 2007

Hey there!

Well, it’s coming up on midnight on the last day of daylight savings time. My oldest daughter’s curfew is predictably, midnight. She called a few minutes ago to point out that since we turn the clocks back, maybe technically, 12:00 AM is really 11 PM so couldn’t she go by the Fall-Back time for curfew tonight? I laughed, and we compromised on her not pulling into the driveway with one minute to spare. She’s at a work get together 10 minutes away, and a friend just arrived, so she got lucky I thought it was funny enough to give some leeway. So, now I’ve got to stay up longer, and figured why not write a letter?

Would You Like a Wreath From the Boy Scouts?
Today, I hoofed it around with Gib to sell Christmas wreaths for the Boy Scout Troop fundraiser. We were fairly successful – he’s sold about 25, for 2 days of door-to-door work and a mom asking around for him. He gets $5 for each wreath sold in his Scout Account. When a scout sells 8 he automatically gets $50 off his Boy Scout Camp fee in addition to the $5 per wreath. He will also sign up to work four 4 hr shifts at the Christmas Tree Lot, conveniently located in Downtown right next to Starbucks (a great location for Hot Cocoa or Apple Cider when it’s cold out!). This helps the Troop to raise the money it uses all year long for operation and providing low cost/high adventures. Working the tree lots also reduces your camp fee. Since I really hate being cold, I put my time in walking miles with Gib to sell wreaths door to door while the weather was still nice! Luckily, Gib LOVES working the Christmas tree lots and even wants to volunteer for the set up and unloading and tagging of the truckload of trees. He and Mike can do that. I’ll stay at home and bake cookies or something!

Halloween Costume Report – The Shoes Make the Outfit:
Did you know shoes are the most important, yet often overlooked-until-the-last-minute part of the costume? Indy handed out candy dressed as Super Girl. She was very cute but white platform boots really completed the look. Taryn and a friend wore matching school type uniforms, with a bit of gothic make-up to spice it up. But flip flops? We thought NOT. Indy had a pair of clunky black heels with silver buckles which were perfect. The girls were actually quite cute and if it wasn’t for the Gothic attitude, it’d be hard to tell they were in costume. Gib dressed as a piece of Hubba Bubba bubblegum. He wore all pink head to toe courtesy of Target’s girl department. On the shirt, we painted the Hubba Bubba logo in yellow & pink puffy paint. Guys don’t get a free pass on the right shoes for the outfit either! Gib borrowed a pair of Indy’s black & pink sneakers which was a way cool effect. He told his friends that it’s macho to wear all pink ‘cause it’s the new black. Mariah went as a punk pink & black pirate girl. She looked adorable with a bandana over her hair and lots of eyeliner just like Capt. Jack Sparrow. She thought her white wheelies would be ok, but the Shoe Police said Nay. Again, a sister’s shoes saved the day at the last minute. This time it was Taryn’s all black indoor soccer runners. Mike and I had a costume party next door earlier in the week. I didn’t feel like coming up with an idea until I felt guilty the night before. So I Googled easy DIY stupid costumes. Came up with Lame Excuses, and we grabbed crutches and a cane from mom, and taped a whole bunch of lame excuses on our shirts. You know, things like, my cell phone battery died, and I have a headache. It was lame (pun intended all the way around) but at least it was funny to have people try to figure out what we were. Have to say it was better than the couple that came as ketchup and mustard. Mike said I didn’t use the best lame excuse of “But it was on sale!” Ha-ha. That’s not an excuse, it’s Pure Reason. The kids pulled in quite a haul of candy as usual. One way to tell they are getting older is the pile of yucky candy is a lot smaller than it used to be. They’re not as picky as they used to be! However, Raisinets and 3 Muskateers are still a NO GO.

Well, Indy made it home and it’s only 11:50 – Whoo-Hoo! 10 minutes to spare on the new midnight. Yay, a whole extra hour of sleep! Of course you feel the full effect better when you go to bed at earlier. Here’s a family photo of us in our Titans shirts taken in September. We hope you are doing okay. You’re in our prayers.

Stay safe.

Post Tonsillectomy

So Monday was the big day. Indy was scheduled for 10:30am and we had to check in at 8:30am. We got there about 8:00 and signed in then found seats in the waiting room. Now I am sitting there and I hear someone say "Hi Mike". Turns out the Exec VP of the company that I work with is there while his wife is having surgery. What are the odds?? Anyway, we get situated in a room and do all the pre surgery stuff and then wait some more. Indy doesn't actually leave for surgery until 12:30. She returns at 2:00 and we stay at the hospital until 6:00pm. Surgery went well no problems. Now its just recovery. With some good pain medication and a lot of ice and popsicles I think she will do just fine. They say days 4-7 are the worst and Indy has indicated that the pain is a little worse now, but she is handling it all just fine. Lets hope we don't have too much of a struggle catching up on all the missed school work.

Catchup - Foot Surgery

Chrissie's mom has had difficulty with her feet and a couple of months ago she ruptured a tendon in her foot. Well on the 24th she went under the knife. The Dr. cut out some of the tendon and re-attached the remaining to the other tendon. This same procedure has already been done earlier on her other foot, so now she effectively has one tendon in each foot. She has been confined to a wheelchair for the next four weeks, she is not allowed to put any weight on the casted foot.

Tonsillectomy

So after Indy's allergy and steroid deal, her throat started bothering her again. She has had numerous bouts of sore throats and strep in the past, so we decided to take her in to see an ENT specialist. He took one look at her tonsils and said they had to go. This was on Monday and she is already scheduled for the tonsillectomy on the 5th. It was a cancellation that allowed her to get it done this quick, otherwise it wouldn't have been until next year. We go in today for the pre surgery lab work. The paperwork that explains the surgery says it is going to be a rough 7-10 days after, but the benefits of not having so many throat problems in the future will be worth it.

Halloween

Halloween seems to have been a success for the kids. Indy stayed home with her BFF Joe and watched a movie while handing out the treats. Taryn went to the mall with two of her friends and then door to door after that. She was a gothic school girl - she really looked good. Gib went through the neighborhood with our neighbors, he was a stick of hubba bubba bublegum. Mariah and I went to a different neighborhood so she could trick-or-treat with a friend from school, she was a pirate. Long and short of it - we have way more candy than we need. Unfortunately, Chrissie had a nasty migraine headache and was down for the count mid afternoon through the next morning. Basically Halloween blew right by her.

Catchup - Scouts

Two weeks ago, Gib started a class on the Environmental Science Merit Badge. This is one of the tougher Eagle required badges. He has completed the two class sessions, has a bit of homework, and then will meet with MB counselor for sign off. The wreath sales campaign comes to end this Tuesday the 6th. So far I have had approx 175 orders turned in. We have ordered 750 so I hope most of the boys have just planned to turn everything in on the last day. I know of one boy who indicates he has sold about 90. Lets hope it all works out in the end. District Camporee coming up on November 9-11 that Gib and I will attend and then also on the 11th Gib has signed up for the Horsemanship MB.

Mariah joined girl scouts this year and is very much enjoying it. She had her first girl scout campout the weekend of October 19. She indicated it was a great time.

Catchup - Steroids

Two weeks ago Indy had this major rash outbreak and swollen tonsils due to allergies that she ended up staying home from school for three days and had to take the steroid prednesom to recover. The steroids made her very hungry. I also thought they made her a bit hyper. I remember looking at her and she had that maniacle gleem in her eye that I see in Taryn when she forgets her Adderall.

Catchup - Tombstone

On the 19th, Chrissie and her mom left for Rio Rico, Arizona (near Tombstone). Chrissie's cousin John got married on the 20th. There were lots of family there, Steve, Francie, Rich, Grandpa Gird etc. John was all dressed up as wild west dude (normal for him) with a gun strapped to his leg for the wedding. John is a Border Patrol agent. Sunday, they had scheduled a trip to Tombstone, but Chrissie and her mom had to drive back to phoenix. Turns out they had arranged to get married again in Tombstone. I think they all had a good time. I stayed in TN with the kids and we did just fine. They returned on Monday night after a delay in the Atlanta airport.

Catchup - Calcific Tendonitis

Just before I left on my business trip earlier this month, Chrissie started feeling some pain in her shoulder. She thought she might have just pulled a muscle and that it would work itself out. But, it steadily got worse until she had pain all the time, couldn't use it and had a difficult time sleeping. So off to the bone & joint clinic where they took xrays and diagnosed calcific tendonitis. They scheduled an MRI for later which validated the diagnosis. She has had one cortisone shot and numerous darvosets to date, but seems to be ok now. They will monitor and if it flares up again, may resort to surgery.

New Family Picture

We got our new family pictures from the photographer, so I uploaded the new one. This is the one that was up on the main page previously.

Soldier Pen Pal

Letter from Gib to 1st Lt. Hardin:

Dear Lt. Hardin,

Hi, I am Gib and I am from troop 137. Yes, I am the babe magnet my mom was talking about. Well let me tell you about who I am. I am in middle school and I am in the pre-algebra class, reading, geography, Language Arts, and science. Well enough about me lets talk about the backpacking trip I went on.

This backpacking trip was to Savage Gulf, TN about two hours from the barn. We had to bring two quarts of water because the ranger said because of the drought all of the streams had dried up (those things were HEAVY). So when we got there we talked to ranger who told us the rules. While he was talking to the adults the 16 scouts that were there noticed a black and white cat, which we named Bo-Bo (my idea). So then we hiked up to the campsite which was ¼ of a mile. The next morning we went down to the picnic tables and had breakfast. It was made of several flavors of oatmeal (have you ever done that?) some muffin thingies, and raisins. After that we made patrols and assigned patrol leaders (which I am happy say I was one of them). Being the youngest of the patrol I felt proud to be assigned a leader, but I think the only reason I got it was because there was no other candidates. So we were off on our 7 mile hike setting a pace of 25 minute miles. We only had a few stops only for suspension bridges, which could only hold two at a time, and for overlooks viewing the gulf. We also stopped when I tripped going down a rocky hill. I landed on my hand, my knee, and my head. The head wound swelled up into a huge egg. We decided to call that place “Gib Falls”. We also stopped for snacks and lunch. We had snacks at a very shady spot with two logs were in a strait line and a huge, pointy stump the held our hats, we had some nutter butters and some Oreos with and crackers. We had lunch at the breeziest and shadiest overlook, (it was HOT) we had some triscuits and cheese with some nutella which a chocolate made from hassle nuts. It was really good (We called this palace “Nalgene Falls” because one of the guys lost their nalgene over the over look). I think we were there for and hour and a half because of the great view. Then we finally got to camp and hour later. We kicked back and relaxed, after we set up our tents and actually fond a puddle that was part of the dried up stream (we only used it for cooking because there was too many micro-organisms in it that the purifier couldn’t take out. Then we checked out the stage coach road, this was the road the stage coach took in case you didn’t pick that from the title, which was a 2 mile hike. Then when we got back like two minute later the ranger was there. I asked him what the cat’s name was. He told me it was Muffy, but we still called it Bo-Bo. Then I and an older scout made the best fire ever! I made the tip of the stick I was holding turn a perfect black, let me tell you this was not an easy process. I had to stick it in, catch it on fire, let it sit there and then put it out in the dirt. Then I had to do it over and over again. Then I drew on the rocks because I was bored. Then when we put out the fire at 11 and I went to bed.

The next day was shorter because we did things so much quicker. We had of breakfast made of applesauce and bagels with peanut butter. Then we were off, we set a much quicker pace this time because we didn’t have as much water we got there in 2 hours and 45 minutes. Then we waited for two guys a boy and his father for an hour than we set out a search party of our adults in 20 minutes we found them and were on our way back home. Well I hope this letter had brought you a lot of laughs and time to not think about the war you are fighting for our country’s freedom. Thank you!

Sincerely,

Gib

When it Rains it Pours...

I left on Monday for Detroit to attend a 3 day training class on Novell's Access Manager. Training went well but Thursday's attempt to fly back home went from bad to worse. I checked in a little after 5pm for a 7pm flight to Nashville through Cincinnati. Clear up until 6:45pm all seemed to be ok, except no airplane at the gate. All the monitors indicated the flight was on time etc. Well come to find out that the plane is stuck in NYC and will be 4 hours late. Not good!! So working with a gate agent, he gets me on a Northwest flight direct to Nashville, but it leaves at 7:13pm and it is 6:58pm and a significant distance between gates. So I run..., but no, the agent did not call the other gate and inform them that I was on my way, so the plane was already set to be pushed back when I got there. So back to where I started, no running this time -- I am too old for this sort of stuff unless it is going to payoff, to see what else can be done. Spoke to the same gate agent who got me on a later 8:58pm NW flight, but again had to go from one end of the terminal to the other. Turns out that this NW flight ends up being delayed, but only by 30 minutes. Finally get onboard and in the air, I am going to make it to Nashville. Get to Nashville and find out my luggage is still in Detroit, NW will deliver it today. Head out to the longterm parking only to find the van has a dead battery and wont start, have to get the airport dude to come and give me a jumpstart. Now driving home and wouldn't you know it -- traffic!! They are repaving I65 and have closed down 3 out of 4 lanes -- makes for slow going. Long and short of it, once you solve one problem there will always be another waiting.

Soldier Pen Pal

Gib's scout troop had some members of Delta Company from Fort Cambell come and visit at a troop meeting a while back. This companay has since been deployed to Iraq. Scoutmaster Green has suggested that the boys adopt a soldier by writing letters to them while they are overseas. Well we decided to take this on as a family project. We have been given 1st Lt. Patrick Hardin. Chrissie has written and mailed the introductory letter as follows:

Dear Lt. Hardin,

My son Gib is a boy scout with a troop you visited. That’s how we got you as Our Soldier. We hope you enjoy our letters. I know not everyone likes to write, but if you could squeak out a couple to let us know a little about you or whatever, we can have an idea of who we are boring with ours!!! So, here’s a bit about us to break the ice:

Let’s start with Gib, since I hope he will develop a liking for letter writing as he writes to you. Gib is the only boy in a family with 3 sisters. Recently on one of those “get to know you interviews” he answered the question of what he wanted to be when he grew up as “a brother to 3 brother-in-laws”. Me and the girls like to tell him we are raising the Perfect Man and not to let the testosterone from the scout troop get to him too much. He just laughs; he’s a great kid. I call him the Troop Puppy because they all pick him up, spin him around, and just generally love the snot right out of him.

Gib is named after my dad, Sherman Gibson, who went by the name Gib to most of his friends and Navy buddies. My dad worked his way up from enlisted to Chief Sonar Officer in the Navy. After several years in subs, taught at the naval warfare school in San Diego, CA, where I grew up. After retirement from 20 yrs in the Navy, he did electrical work with satellites. He was a cool guy, loved hiking and nature, and died too young at 63 of pancreatic cancer 3 yrs ago. He was so healthy the docs thought he might make it 3 yrs but it was only 9 months. He died at home with my mom, brother and I at his side. The Navy determined his death was service related-exposure to stuff like asbestos. We all miss him terribly. My brother still lives in San Diego and is a watershed biologist for the county. My grandpa is there too, born and raised, and is almost 88 yrs old. He’s a rabid ham radio operator and travels, and likes to go RV camping. We lost Grandma only 7 months after my dad, so it’s been a rough few years for us. My mom, she’s Lynda, recently sold their house in San Diego and moved out here to live with us. We sold our house in [] and went in together on a house in [] just a few miles north. It’s a great house with a granny flat on the main level so she has her space and we have ours, but we’re all together most of the time. Out back is “woods” and land that will remain undeveloped. It borders a golf course and our neighbors to the north of us look out on the greenway, but we see only trees and the hill. It’s great here – so beautiful and private and an awesome location. At little buggy, but between all the birds, butterflies and deer it’s very cool. I’ll print a photo on the back of this page for you.

Anyway, back to our Gib: He is a typical little guy, kinda short for his age, but I think he’ll be OK once a growth spurt hits in a year or two. He likes Playstation, NFL football, computers, reading, and everything about Boy Scouts. Gib also plays drums and is enjoying being in the jazz band and percussion ensemble at school. He used to have several guy friends but they all moved away (that’s when we broke down and got him a Playstation) and then we moved, so he doesn’t get to toss the football or play street hockey like he used to anymore. Gib is on his second backpacking trip with the troop this weekend. He’s a big Mama’s Boy but in a good way. He has a great sense of humor and from what I hear; he’s been a big hit with the girls since Kindergarten. I should probably be worried.

Indy, our oldest, is celebrating her birthday this week. She is way too outgoing and beautiful for us to think the next few years will be easy! This is a sample of our life with teenage daughters and it’s only just beginning: A 23 yr old asked her out after getting to know her a little (OK, let’s be real – looked at her) at the pool this summer (he was rather shocked to find out she was still in HS). Once he found out how old she was, (he thought 21-22) he started calling her Little Sister. Smart Guy, eh?! A coworker asked her to be her room mate, and Indy says she’s been asked out for a beer after work a couple times now. She says “sorry I can’t” and thinks to herself “for 4 more years”. She’s in high school and we are starting to think about colleges. I think she is thinking more about boys, but we are always in the mode of looking out for her! Actually, she is seriously considering [] University. We’re going to some campus day in November to get a head start on the whole college thing. [], which is less than 20 minutes away, is almost too good to be true for us as parents, so I’m trying not to get my hopes up too high that my baby won’t be moving far away right after graduation after all. Indy plays guitar, likes music, art, photography, and works at a music store. She is an aggressive soccer player, and an honor student. She’s having a fun birthday weekend – 2 concerts, a hockey game and a football game.

Next up is Taryn. She’s a quiet little cutie. At least around us. She’s also an honor student, and she and Gib are the closest friends with each other of our children. Taryn likes to spend a lot of time alone on the computer, reading, also likes photography, or hanging out with Gib. She designs the most amazing things with a paper and pencil. She was drawing all these intricate quilt patterns but has recently started doing these cool drawings with straight lines making a neat abstract pattern. She is very geometrical and I wonder where that talent will take her. Taryn is on the same soccer team as Indy so it’s fun for us to go to games and cheer them both on at the same time, and the sisterly dynamics on the field are interesting to watch as well. Indy is protective of Taryn and woe to the player that takes advantage of Taryn’s diminutive stature. Taryn just tops 5’ and is about 85 lbs. She’s small but very speedy. We call her the cheetah because she gives a lot of speed but only for so long and then she’s done.

Our youngest is Mariah. She looks quite a bit like Hermoine in the Harry Potter movie. She is currently spending a heck of a lot of time planning to be in a girl band. My mom said she was working on their answers for media interviews last week. She spent hours on it. She’s been taking lessons on her electric guitar for a year now, so who knows, someday she could be in a band. She just talked me into adopting a Fiddler Crab from a recent science study at elementary school. I said NO! 15 times, but on the 16th just couldn’t break her little heart over the phone while she was at school, saving the life of this poor last little crab nobody else wanted. At least it wasn’t one of the millipeeds (too gross to spell correctly). I named it Apple (get it? Crab-Apple? But she’s calling it Shaliya or something like that). Mariah is waaaaay into Webkinz. If you haven’t heard of that, let me tell you, somebody is a Marketing Genius. It’s like the whole Beanie Baby craze, but they took it to a whole ‘nother level. You buy the stuffed animal. Register it online, name it, etc., and get a whole bunch of $$ in your webkinz account to buy it furnishings to live in, food, and who knows what else. You win more money by playing games with your little critter, and when you buy another one? You guessed it, even more $$ in your special account. I think she’s up to about 9 or 10 of them. She even has Gib liking them too, but I’m sure he’d deny it if asked! They’d be on the computer 24/7 doing webkinz stuff if they could. It’s all I can do to get them to eat. As long as the homework gets done, they practice 30 min on drums and guitar, they are free to plug in all they want.

Hopefully, this wasn’t TMI for ya. You were saved from page 3 by a bum shoulder that I have no idea how it happened. It could have been from yoga, or perhaps when I tried to get a kiss from Gib before he left for backpacking yesterday, but it is horrible and I can’t type anymore. I don’t do pain well. Next time, I can tell you a bit about my hubbie Mike (bless the man for living with 5 women) and myself. Better yet, I’ll tell you about the Boy Scout Water World Campout . It’s a family weekend at [] Lake. We brought all our daughters and their friends. For the scouts 14 and older, life got a lot happier. I played chaperone very diligently that weekend, lemme tell you. Seriously though, I have never seen a higher caliber of boys and young men all in one place as I did that weekend. What a great Troop it is. They thought the world of the soldiers that came to visit at the Barn before ya’ll were deployed.

We consider it an honor to send you a few minutes of light reading about our typical American Life that you are fighting for; and hope that you can check the stress for a few and kick back and enjoy. We also consider it an honor to pray for you and your company that you will return home safe and sound.

Take Care,
Mike, Chrissie, Indy, Taryn, Gib & Mariah

Birthday Week...End

Wednesday through Sunday of last week were a firestorm of activity for Indy's birthday. On Wednesday night her friend Blake, took her to a Dashboard Confessional concert. Friday, Indy and her friend Leanne went to a Korn concert. Saturday, I took her and six of her friends to a Predators game. And then Sunday, I took her and two friends to the Titans game. Needless to say, it was a very busy week. Indy's birthday present was a new digital camera to replace the one that got stolen during the WaterWorld event in July.

Meanwhile, Gib left for a weekend of backpacking with the scout troop on Friday and returned on Sunday. He had one minor incident where he took a tumble and put a goose egg on his head, but I think he is still intact and overall had a good time.

Deer

Since we moved to our new home six months ago, we are often visited by deer in our backyard. However, we have until this point only seen doe. Last Wednesday had four buck and three doe meander throough our back yard. I was even able to take some good pictures.

Family Picture Day

Yesterday was family picture day. We let all of the kids skip school because our sitting appointment was at 12:00pm. Chrissie and I had gone shopping previously for clothing options. We were originally focusing on blue jeans with some sort of matching color button down shirts, but as the shopping trip progressed, nothing seemed right. Then, we came upon some Titans shirts and decided that that was the what we were going to do. Since we are invested in the Titans we would all wear some sort of Titans shirt with blue jeans. I will post a picture here when we get them.

Tiebreaker...Heartbreaker...

Last night I stayed up to watch the San Diego Padres play the Colorado Rockies in a one game tiebreaker for the 2007 National League Wildcard spot. It was quite a game with the Padres starting off with a 3-0 deficit. Next comes a Grand Slam by the Padres to bring the score to SD 5 Col 4 at the end of the 3rd inning. By the end of the 7th Colorado had regained the lead 6-5, but once again the Padres comeback with another score to tie the game in the 8th and through the 9th. Now the tiebreaker game is into a tiebreaker (extra innings). Many pitchers later the Padres come up with a 2 run homer that puts them ahead in the top of 13th. They now turn to the all time saves leader, Trevor Hoffman, to close out the game in the bottom of the 13th and here is where the heartbeaker begins. For all of his accomplishments it was sad to watch him and the Padres lose this game.

In other sports, namely football, the weekend was also a dearth of "upsets". Our football pool results for the week are dismal even though Chrissie had the highest point total. This now leaves me in 5th and Chrissie in 7th for the first 4 weeks. As they say, focus on the next game not the last game.

This last sunday I was called to be the Ass't Deacons Quorum Advisor with emphasis on "Duty to God".

Tonight is the kickoff for the Wreath Sales Fundraiser for Gib's scout troop. Chrissie and I agreed to be the chairpersons for this event. Lets hope the boys do well cause we have ordered 750 Wreaths.

And so it begins....

I thought I would start this blog as a way to begin a sort of history as well as maintain a thread of current events. This is mainly for my family and therefore is not published or advertised, but can be accessed on the internet by anyone with the right url. I have never considered myself a very talented writer, that honor belongs to my wife. It is a struggle for me to put my thoughts into words, but I will make the attempt. As a beginning, I was born in Kentucky some 40 years ago, but did not stay there long. Short enough that I have no memories of it. My earliest memory is Marie, my natural mother, and I boarding an airplane (she called it the redeye) destined, I think, to L.A. As it turns out, my parents divorced sometime around my first year and my brothers, Ron and Carl, and I lived with Marie in California.
