the one about groupthink...
her size 3 feet were sweating in her shoes, her small hands were clammy, her eyes squeezed so tightly shut tears had started to form.
with a final deep breath, she nodded.
a slight, reluctant nod and almost immediately she felt a shove on her lower back and before she knew it, she was whizzing through air on the 'FlYinG FoX' to loud cheers.
cheers, of course, from the people who had completed the stunt before her and deathly silence from those who had not and were contemplating whether they wanted to go through with it.
well done, the instructor beamed when she reached the end. you've conquered your fear.
and she joined the ranks of those who had 'conqered their fear' and cheered the others on, silently dissing those who did not dare to go through with the 'puny' stunt.
my question is, who's the coward?
the one who stands up for himself and refuses to go along with the act because he/she was frightened and wasnt afraid to show it or the one who went against his/her own conscience and did what he/she had to to be accepted?
why are we labelling people who stand up for themselves as 'cowards'? do we secretly yearn to do what they do as well but stop short for fear of the repercussions?
which are you:
the one who swings down the rope with your eyes shut tight?
or the one who cries and refuses to go along with it no matter how much they try to encourage you?
