one might be forgiven to think that the YOG opening was that of a nation's National Day Parade.
he might also be forgiven to think that the National Day Parade should be more spectacular than the YOG opening
on both counts he is wrong.
from this singaporean lying on the sofa watching YOG opening, i had much greater sense of pride in the country and in the performances than when i was watching National Day Parade. looking at the casinos in the background and the treatment of the youth athletes from all over the world (a usual Olympic Games opening would require the athletes to parade themselves with the national flag) made me wonder how far we are going in sacrifising our true beliefs to take on the world again. There was a period where we were firm and resolute in all ways making sure that this was the Singapore we build with our hands. But here, as many things in the past 5 years try to suggest, we are losing that firmness in that bid to renew ourselves and seek that, ever singaporeanish, economic success.
YOG or not, casinos or not, the bottom line is us Singaporeans should benefit and take home something from these huge decisions.
have we?
or have they succeeded in getting more out of us?
