Spotlight Author: Juliana Haygert
Guess what today is?? It's release day for the super awesome Juliana Haygert's new NA paranormal romance novel - Destiny Gift!! Check out that cover!
While Juliana Haygert dreams of being Wonder Woman, Buffy, or a blood elf shadow priest, she settles for the less exciting—but equally gratifying—life of a wife, mother, and author. Thousands of miles away from her former home in Brazil, she now resides in Connecticut and spends her days writing about kick-ass heroines and the heroes who drive them crazy.
Thirty years in the future, a sinister New York City exists in permanent darkness.
A student at the secured NYU, nineteen-year-old Nadine has visions of Victor Gianni, an imaginary guy she has real feelings for. Afraid of being truly insane, she explains the visions away as simple daydreams, but she can no longer deny them when she bumps into Victor in real life. But this Victor doesn’t know her, and turns her away. After the encounter, Nadine’s visions change to those of eerie fates, gods she’s never heard of, demons with sharp claws they are not too timid to use … and instructions.
To discover if she’s losing her mind, Nadine follows the vague directions—with the real, rude and reluctant Victor—leading to a man who knows it all: Nadine can restore an ancient creed by unveiling the clues on her visions, and bring sunlight and peace to the world again. But that’s only if the demons and the other evil forces behind the darkness don’t stop her first.

Join me in welcoming Juliana to my blog!
Hi Juliana, what was your inspiration behind this book?
A sentence my husband said, actually. He asked what if gods weren’t immortal as they thought they were? That simple “what if” spun the whole idea inside my head ;)
Why did you choose this particular genre?
It wasn’t a conscious decision. It just happened. I always loved fantasy and magic and the impossible, so I guess it only makes sense that I would write paranormal and urban fantasy.
Tell the readers a little about you.
I’m a simple girl, who loves her family more than life. I also love music and gaming, and dancing. And books. And writing. Hehe I laugh easily, but I also get irritated easily. Unfortunately, I’m impatient and I’m always stressed. Nothing a good laugh or the right word can’t fix ;)
What inspired you to become a writer?
A high school teacher. She assigned a project to write a short book. I began that same day, spent the night writing like crazy and never stopped. Though, for over 10 years, writing was only a hobby.
What do you find is your biggest writing struggle?
To be honest, sitting down and starting. I mean, once I’m involved in the story, I don’t get away from it for almost anything, other than family. But, until I actually start, the internet can be very alluring. So, I try to keep the internet off during my work hours.
Other than that, I tend to overexplain what my character is feeling and/or doing – so I always have to go back and revise with that in mind, cutting unnecessary sentences ;)
Any tips for new writers?
Write. Read. Write. Read. Rinse and repeat. Read tons of craft books. Practice. And never give up.
Any other books in the works?
I’m working on the sequel of Destiny Gift, and also on a NA contemporary romance called Breaking the Reins. And I hope to get back to my gypsies (NA UF) book soon!
How/where can readers find you?
Here:
Excerpt:
I heard a heavy sigh and turned toward it. It was Victor. He was leaving the elevator down the hall and coming toward his grandma’s room. He had seen me and didn’t seem very happy about it.
He wore faded jeans, a t-shirt, and a thin jacket. Too casual. I shook my head. The fact that my dream Victor and this real Victor were exactly the same physically, while their clothing styles and posture were the opposite of each other still boggled my mind.
He came to a stop before me. “You again.” There was disdain in his tone. I cringed.
“How are you?” I managed to ask and immediately felt silly. I had planted myself here in this hallway for over an hour waiting for him and when he finally arrived, I didn’t know what to say. Though I really did want to know how he was. The last time I had seen him in the flesh, he’d been jerking on the floor of the hospital’s garage, in pain. “What was that…ah…before…?” I trailed off, hoping he would understand what I was referring to.
He shrugged, his sea-green eyes still staring me with suspicion. “I don’t know. By the way, how do you know my name?”
I twirled a lock of my hair around my index finger as I considered my answer. I wanted to answer him. I wanted to be honest. But he would never believe me.
As if my answer would pop out of the walls, I scanned the hallway.
At the end of the corridor, a nurse left a room and entered another.
“The nurse,” I almost shouted, hoping he wouldn’t notice my sudden lie. I avoided his inquisitive eyes. “I heard a nurse calling you earlier that day.”
His deadpan expression hid his thoughts and didn’t let me know if he was buying it or not.
“What did you do to me last night?” he asked, crossing his arms. God, I hated how his voice and his posture were so guarded and mistrustful. I wasn’t used to it.
“What do you mean?”
“When you touched me, the shock and the pain went away. How did you do that?”
“I don’t know.” This time I wasn’t lying. I really didn’t know. He frowned, clearly still suspicious. “Seriously, I have no idea.”
His shoulders stiffened. “What are you doing here? What do you want?”
My eyes widened as I retreated a few steps, trying to avoid his toxic tone.
Yes, he looked like my Victor—the same voice, the same hair, the same face, the same mouth that had offered me smiles that had rendered me breathless many, many times. I wanted to touch him, to embrace him, to tell him everything was going to be okay. Maybe if I touched him, he would remember me and he would want to touch me too.
I came closer to him, looking deeply into those wary green eyes, my fingers itching to stroke his skin, to feel it smoldering under my caress. But I didn’t. He was like my Victor, but he wasn’t my Victor. The Victor from my visions would never speak to me like this. He would never snap at me. No, no. My Victor loved my company, loved to hear me sing, loved to embrace me and inhale my scent.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered, my voice croaking under the heavy pressure inside my chest.
Then, I walked away.

My Big News
If by some chance you missed my big announcement...
I have an agent!! And not just any agent. I'm now repped by the amazing Jill Corcoran! I'm thrilled to be working with her! And even more thrilled (and flattered) that she loves my new MS!
When researching agents I'd always scour blogs and websites to find success stories and timelines so I thought I'd share mine.
The last 6 months have been insanely busy between Gossamer and Dream On releasing and the edits for Gilded (which will release this summer), but I managed to find time to work on a new project. Actually, I started several new projects but they never felt right and I shelved them. I know myself, and I know how I write. When something is going to work for me, I fly through the first draft. I write pretty compulsively until it's done. When I struggle through it, I put it away with the possibility of revisiting it in the future.
This project was one of those stories itching to get out and the second I began I couldn't stop. I wrote constantly, staying up late every night knowing I'd regret it in the morning. As soon as my first draft was done I began my edits. When those were done, I filled my critique partner's email inbox with chapters. She's super awesome by the way and got on them right away (Thanks Reagan!!). I worked on editing again and again, wanting it to be as perfect as possible. It's a blur, but my kids look healthy so I'm pretty confident I remembered to feed them and what not. I finished everything by late February. It's hard to explain but I had a very good feeling about this one and was eager to begin querying.
I'd drafted a query in January and tweaked it over and over until I felt good about it. I'd decided to gradually send out a small batch to my top choice agents and see how it went. My very first query was emailed on February 23rd to Jill. I waited a few days then sent out two more. Two days later, one of those agents requested my full. I was shocked, thrilled, and all that other good stuff. I sent my full, and, with more confidence in my query, sent out a few more. Then I got a second request for a full from another amazing agent! But still no word from Jill.
By March 23rd I'd sent out twelve queries, had received 5 form rejects, 2 full requests and had 5 without responses (except for Jill's, those had only been out for a couple of days at this point) and was now stuck in a waiting game. I'd seen on a website no response from Jill after one month meant it was a rejection. I'd pretty much decided she was passing at this point. But on March 27th I received an email saying she enjoyed my sample pages and would love to read more! She requested my full and, after my heart started functioning again, I emailed it to her.
That was three fulls out!! And all to amazing agents!! I knew enough about publishing to know it could still end with three rejections from amazing agents, but the very next morning I woke up to an email from Jill with "Loving your book" as the subject line. I can't put into words how excited I was to see that! She said she'd stayed up until 2 am reading and was halfway through. I spent the first half of the morning giddy over the email. I spent the rest of the day trying to recall every single detail about the second half wondering if she'd like it. You know all that self-doubt writers are so good at feeding? Yeah, well, mine was stuffed. But Friday morning I woke up to another short and sweet, late night email from Jill. She'd stayed up until 2 am again and would love to rep me (she also mentioned something about my male MC that resulted in me high-fiving strangers. kidding. maybe.) I pretty much died at that point. Jill's my dream agent, so I withdrew the queries I hadn't heard back on (and ended up with one more full request but informed them I was withdrawing). Notified those with my full and made it official. I couldn't be happier!
Oh, and in case you're wondering, the awesome manuscript that landed me an agent is a super sexy New Adult Contemporary Romance :)

Spotlight Author and Giveaway: Calisa Rhose
I'd like you join me in welcoming Calisa Rhose author of Risk Factors. She stopped by today to talk about writing and her new release. Don't forget to leave a comment to be entered in the giveaway!
Veterinarian Vivian Dane has purchased her uncle’s practice in the tiny town of Wales,
Missouri, where most residents still doubt her ability to treat their pets. But Viv is used to being
considered less-worthy than her predecessors. After all, her parents are world-renowned wildlife
vets, and most everyone is unimpressed she’s chosen to not follow directly in their footsteps.
Now Connor, a patient’s owner, is hot for Viv, but clearly doesn’t think she’s dating material
because he has a daughter…who he believes no woman is good enough for.
Being a perfect dad is EMT paramedic Connor’s life focus. He can’t seem to stay away
from sexy Doctor Viv, but attraction is as far as he’ll ever let it go. His mother abandoned him,
leaving him to be raised in the foster system, and then his wife abandoned both him and their
daughter. He absolutely will not risk bringing another woman into his little girl’s life and having
her feel the hurt of being left…again.
Forfeiting is easier than attempting and failing. So why does Viv feel compelled to prove
she’s a sure bet for Connor and his daughter? Can Connor trust Viv--and himself--enough to play
the possibilities?
Hi
Renita! Thank you for having me today. I’m excited about this blog
tour and ‘meeting’ so many new people!
What
was your inspiration behind this book?
It
was written on a challenge by a crit partner. I had no idea what to
write, needing something medical, so I fell back on the only medicine
I know--veterinary. Vivian Dane is a pet doctor.
Why
did you choose this particular genre?
I
love the chance to fall into a love story in this day and age when
divorces seem to be at their highest. Happy ever after stories are
rare and I love writing them.
Tell
the readers a little about you.
Calisa Rhose is an Okie, born
and bred, through and through, and proud of it. While growing up,
when she wasn’t on the back of a horse, she could be found with pen
and paper in hand. Her writing career began with poetry in her
younger days. Then she discovered Rock-n-Roll and cute musicians.
Poetry turned into stories of romance and dreams. These days she
lives with the same man who convinced her to take a romantic journey
with him almost 30 years ago. After raising three strong daughters
she spends her days loving their granddaughters, hoping for a boy
someday, and writing. When she’s not writing, you can find Calisa
putting on her editor hat and working to help other published and
aspiring writers.
She is working on more
projects with her favored contemporary cowboys, first responders and
firemen, as well as, the occasional ‘other’ heroes- and their
sexy female counterparts, those sassy, stubborn heroines.
What
inspired you to become a writer?
Love
of writing and being able to make a story turn out how I want it to,
I decided if other writers can do it, there was no reason I couldn’t.
I’d been writing since I was twelve so in 2005 I got serious and
decided I wanted to be published. I sold and saw my first book
published in 2011.
What
do you find is your biggest writing struggle?
Making
myself sit and write. I’m easily distracted and there’s always so
much that needs to be done every day. LOL It takes determination to
open a wip and write, even though it’s all I think about when I’m
not writing.
Any
tips for new writers?
Read
and write. Every day. Everyone says it--but there’s a reason they
all say it. Don’t give up and most of all believe in yourself no
matter what. It really is wonderful if you have family and friends
who support you, but ultimately, you are the one who matters most and
if you don’t believe, it won’t happen.
Any
other books in the works?
Always!
LOL And usually more than one project at once. Right now I’m
working on a fireman story, a mind reader and a new one I can’t say
much about yet. I will say it promises to be a lot more intense,
writing and research-wise, than any of my other work.
Here’s
a taste of Risk Factors:
Viv’s smile and
throaty laughter burrowed deeper by the second, mutating into hot
want that seemed to draw him to her at every opportunity. But her
invitation shook him back to level
ground. Dinner.
With her. Vivian Dane, the woman who seemed to freely access his
dreams
lately, was
asking him out.
Her voice fell to
a low smoky grade that slid like satin over him, tightening around
his chest, making it hard to breathe.
He wanted to kiss
her.
Period.
There was
something about her in the lab coat he couldn’t put his finger on.
She appeared
so fragile and
delicate in pink that matched her lips…china doll perfect.
Kissable.
He opened his
mouth to refuse. He couldn’t afford to get close to anyone,
wouldn’t risk Janna. He knew his daughter already liked the vet,
had said so. If he got involved and it all nosedived south, he
couldn’t stand to have Janna hurt. Even if she didn’t know it,
Viv was their veterinarian now and he’d have to see her, Jelly Bean
would notice the tension--
“Connor?”
“I’d like
that.”

Spotlight Author: Cd Brennan
Maggie isn’t looking for love on her backpacking trip through Australia. She’s got enough man troubles back in Ireland. Australia is her escape, a place of adventure where she can create memories to last a lifetime.
But some memories won’t be left behind.
Gray is ready to quit hiring backpackers to help with the work on his remote Queensland cattle station when Maggie turns up. She’s just passing through, but the connection they forge during the long nights herding cattle won’t be so easily cast aside.
WARNING: A strong-willed Irish heroine, a stubborn Australian hero, and oceans of difference to bridge for love.
A Lyrical Press Contemporary Romance
Today I get to welcome Cd Brennan. Her debut Contemporary Romance WATERSHED releases today! Such an exciting day!
First, a huge
thank you to Renita for hosting me today. It is the actual Release
Day for WATERSHED, so a special day for me. It’s my debut novel so
a day that will remain with me forever. So thanks, Renita, for being
a part of it!
Thanks Corinne! I'm excited to be a part of your big day! Congratulations on your release! So can you tell
us a little about your current release.
WATERSHED
Irish Maggie is
backpacking through outback Queensland when she heads out to a cattle
station to experience adventure in the “real” Australia,
something special, a memory of a lifetime. At the Gemfields, Gray
sets out to make a point to Maggie that she isn’t welcome. They
have work to do, and she will only get in the way. It’s hard enough
keeping the property going without wasting time on adventure-seekers
in Australia.
Both evolve as
the story goes. Quiet, responsible Maggie raises to the challenge,
works hard to prove herself on the station. As every day passes, she
comes more out of her shell. A fish-out-of-water, her new and very
different environment challenges her and makes her stronger and more
confident, until she develops into who she really is meant to be. Her
inner strength and passion was always there, she just needed the
right time and place for it to unfold. Gray is bold and arrogant and
doesn’t have time for anything or anyone that doesn’t fit into
his plans. But then Maggie arrives; someone he never expected to
cross his path. She is beyond his understanding - this beautiful,
magical Irish lass whose accent alone melts hearts around her. Even
though so different from himself and what he has known, he realizes
that she not only “fits” at the station, his home and life, but
in his heart.
Love is a
chance. It’s hard enough to find the “right one” these days to
not take an opportunity when it crosses your path, even if it’s not
what you expected, even if it doesn’t fit into your plans, even if
it is with someone from another hemisphere! Both Gray and Maggie
realize this through events that happen in the harsh outback of
Australia.
What
was your inspiration behind this book?
While
backpacking through Australia in 1995, a woman sat next to me on a
Greyhound bus journey from Rockhampton to Townsville, about an 8 hour
drive normally, then add another four hours for the bus experience.
As most travelers would understand, a spare seat next to you on these
trips is a God-send, more space to stretch out and put your things.
But, as fate would have it, another writer Margery Smith sat next to
me and we chatted for almost the entire trip.
I had been in
Australia for a month, working my way up the East coast, and even
though it was a beautiful coastline and plenty to do (The Australian
hostels were like motels with pools and BBQ facilities), I felt it
wasn’t the Australia that I had hoped for. I wanted the true and
gritty experience, not one polished and packaged for tourists. I
mentioned my disappointment, and within moments my traveling
companion offered that her daughter lived on a cattle station just
west of Rocky (Rockhampton), and would I be interested in working as
a jillaroo? Would I ever!
After my sailing
trip through the Whitsunday Islands to see the Reef, I backtracked
down to Rockhampton and then west, where another bus journey plopped
me down at some dusty turnoff in the middle of nowhere. Thus, the
opening scene of Watershed. Even though there was no romance for me
personally at the Bloomfield Station (just a few hours east of Alpha,
Queensland), I fell in love with the lifestyle and landscape, the
people and animals, the fresh air and hard work. Ironically enough, I
ended up marrying my own Australian country boy I met 10 years later
when we were both living in Ireland.
What
do you find is your biggest writing struggle?
Time. Or the
lack of time, I should say. I also work as a Content Editor and
Business Writer, but my main job being the care of my two young sons,
a four-year old and a 16-month old. They are active sprites, I can
tell you! I adore them, but writing and editing is my escape at the
moment. It’s something for me - I just wish I had more time for it.
Right now, it’s taking me about a year to write a book, and when
you are writing a series, this isn’t a great turnover. Boo.
I am a morning
person, but so are my boys (sometimes a 5am start), so I can’t
write then, which leaves me naps and at night after they have gone to
bed. But, like I said, I am a morning person, and the most productive
and creative and motivated then. Sometimes, I am so buggered I fall
asleep when the boys do!
I hear about all
these other wonderful authors out there that are mums, too. I admire
this greatly, women can produce a beautifully written novel and at
the same time juggle nappies (diapers) and tantrums. To me, this is
not only dedication but the perfect example of multi-tasking. The
separation yet inclusion of two totally different things. I want to
send a shout-out to all the mum-writers out there. Atta girl!
Any
tips for new writers?
What are you
passionate about? Write what you enjoy (in reading, in life, in
sport, even about children!), and I believe that this will shine
through into your story. For example, if you want to write romance
but love downhill skiing, set your characters on the slopes. The more
belief and passion there, the more is transferred to your audience,
and they will love it.
As a Content
Editor, I am always looking for those little details or mannerisms in
the characters or setting that sets the book apart. To be able to do
that with depth and believability, the design needs to be something
you are familiar with. You can rely on your imagination to an extent,
but don’t skimp on the research. I can tell immediately when an
author doesn’t really know what they are writing about.
Any
other books in the works?
There are four
planned books in the Love Where You Roam series. The series follows
women as they travel, backpack and work in faraway places, and in
those adventures the woman finds love where she roams. Like in many
journeys, the heroine’s path is not only physical but spiritual as
they grow and change in their new environment. Ultimately, they find
a place where they belong.
The series is
tied by characters and concept. The heroine that stars in the
following book of the series will make an appearance in the previous
book. In Book 1, WATERSHED with Maggie and Gray, we also meet Lizzy,
a jillaroo and friend to the Stewart’s that own The Gemfields. In
the next book, A STONE’S THROW, Lizzy travels to Scotland where she
meets the debonair but elusive, Hamish Skene.
Lizzy lives and
works in a Hotel Pub in the small town of Bridge of Allan, Scotland.
One of her coworkers is Sophie, a university student studying to be a
linguistics teacher. She travels to Alaska in the next book,
currently titled DUSTING OF LIGHT, where she meets a rugged native
Alaskan. An Aleutian mother and Russian father, he is striking in
appearance and mannerisms. I say “he” because I don’t have a
character name yet. I might do a contest on my FB or my website for
fans to choose a name. I have already started writing the book, and
it’s a bit annoying to always use “Alaska” in place of his
name. LOL.
How/where
can readers find you?
Since
WATERSHED is my debut novel, I don’t have a huge fan following yet,
but would love to hear from readers.
Excerpt:
“In Ireland we have the Banshee.” Maggie broke Gray’s daydreaming with a start. “She is the omen of death and the messenger from the Otherworld.”
She continued in a whisper. “Often she appears an old hag. Folklore says she may also appear as a stunningly beautiful woman.” Maggie raised her brow at him, her eyes twinkling with fun.
Gray threw his head back and laughed, and she joined him. There was no shaking her. He decided he wasn’t going to best Maggie, and for the first time in a long time he was content with that.
He shifted so she had to settle against him. He heard her sigh as he wrapped his arm around her. They sat watching the fire, listening to the sounds of the bush settle for the night. It was peaceful and, Gray had to admit, romantic. He smiled, fulfilled after a long day’s hard work, some good bush tucker and a beautiful woman by his side. He had almost worked up enough courage to kiss her when she shivered, wrapping her arms around herself.
“I’m going to sleep.” Pulling off her trainers, she climbed into her swag. “Goodnight.”
Author BioHaving traveled and lived all over the world, Cd Brennan now talks with a strange accent, a mix of distant terminology, a blend of culturally cute but confusing euphemisms that leaves everyone looking at her with a blank stare. Luckily, her Australian husband (who she met in Ireland) and her two Aussie/Yankee sons have no problem understanding her – well, except for the word “NO”.
Now settled back “home” in Michigan, she enjoys reliving her glory days by writing about them. She considers the last fifteen years abroad the perfect research for her Love Where You Roam series; matchmaking women and men from different cultures, even different hemispheres, helping them find their true one across oceans of difference.
As destiny plays a hand in all the stories, Cd Brennan truly believes that what is for you, won’t pass you by. She hopes to inspire others to get out there: “Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” [Mark Twain] And of course, fall in love.
