the legacy of sexual harassment for the victims and the perpretator

These questions are helping me think through sexual harassment and abuse:

Learning That My Father Was a Sexual Predator

  • How do we honor and support the victims in their life-long journey of healing?
  • How do we deal with the perpetrators in a way that holds them accountable and also acknowledges their humanity?
  • What are the root causes of sexual violence and how can we begin to address them?
  • Can we teach our young boys to allow themselves the full range of emotional connection so it’s not a choice between sex and desperate loneliness?
  • Can we begin to take action against a commercial culture that exploits and objectifies women to sell its endless products?
  • Can we find new ways to honor the power, intimacy and delight of sexuality as an integral part of our lives?

Mary Shelley would decidedly not agree!

“Your beliefs become your thoughts. Your thoughts become your words. Your words become your actions. Your actions become your habits. Your habits become your values. Your values become your destiny.”
~Mahatma Gandhi

"The stories we tell, particularly the ones we’re not aware of, can profoundly shape who we are, and the decisions that we make. Recognizing our stories and how they influence how we relate to others is a hallmark of becoming self-aware, and a cornerstone of mindfulness. But it can be difficult to discriminate ourselves from our stories unless we are conscious of them and understand their origins."

Feminists vs./and Romance Lovers

Can you be considered a feminist if you still long for romance? What good does it do you to reject social constraints if you're going to still be a judgmental prig? Isn't it possible to be a genius and be tolerant, compassionate, and humble? These are some of the questions I'm pondering after seeing A Quiet Passion.
