I mentioned that today's show was Cybilish because we start out by uncovering the five faces of Valarie. Then I remembered my confusing boyhood infatuation with Sally Field, not as Cybil, but as The Flying Nun* dressed in virginal white and sporting that aerodynamic cornette. I went to Catholic School - being aroused by a nun was definitely taboo. I was jealous too, because I just knew that dog Carlos Ramirez was making secret trips to the convent to visit my Sister Bertrille for a little late night Biblical research. I lost my desire when she left the church to hang with Burt Reynolds and won an Oscar...maybe it was the habit! Anyway, it's up and away with The Zutons, The Mothers Of Invention, The Monkees, Matmos, Julie's Haircut, Procol Harum, Bob Dylan, The Police, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Stevie Wonder, Material and Phish. The rock-lore behind the two scantily dressed women on the cover of Country Life by Roxy Music is that Brian Ferry met the two beauties at a bar and proposed the idea of an impromptu photo session - which they accepted*! What makes people allow themself to go through the kind of drastic changes that Michael Jackson submitted himself to endure? Non-stop plastic surgery, skin bleaching and wardrobe choices now seem minor compared to the whole pedophilia situation. The thing that really bums me out is when people talk about him now, most of the time it has nothing to do with music. The reality is that so much bad water has passed under the bridge, he can never hope to get close to where he could have or should have been. That is a real shame. His body of work can no longer speak for itself without the freaked out image creeping into view. At least for today, we will succumb to selective amnesia and dance to a set of MJ including The Jackson 5, Jennifer Batten and a great tune from Dangerous. Also included are selections from Prince, Living Colour, Spaceways Incorporated, Billy Martin & John Medeski, David Sylvian & Ryuichi Sakamoto, We Are Frank Chicken, Jeff Beck, Jeff Parker and Jeff Tweedy!

*Bruce Woolley & The Camera Club released their self-titled album in 1979. On it was a cut written by group leader Woolley and future Yes members Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes called Video Killed The Radio Star. The album and the song went nowhere. Also in 1979, Horn and Downes rechristened as Buggles released their version of the tune, first on a single and then on the 1980 lp The Age Of Plastic. This time it hit and earned the somewhat dubious distinction of being the first video to be played on MTV. I hope Woolley made a few bucks in the deal.
