Transmission 2307

After playing all new music on Monday and 3 obscure German bands on Tuesday, today I break out of the gate with some (semi) familiar bands -Blue Oyster Cult, Radio Birdman, Foghat and Flammin' Groovies. We do Billy songs with Peter Wolf, Iggy Pop and Phish and then a Ray Charles set with Humble Pie and the genius himself. To end things we take the Last Song from France's Moving Gelatine Plates debut. This band has two lp's from the early 70's and they have been astounding me for over 3 decades! Maximum volume on this one!

The working titles for today's edition of Radio Free Wohlman are Headphones In Space or The Cosmos Between Your Ears! Great names for a band or album (yours for a small finders fee)! The show consists of 3 long pieces from 3 German bands from 1971 - 1972. It is recommended that you get yourself in the mood for musical space travel utilizing your favorite method(s) and ear goggles/buds are highly suggested for the sounds of Thirsty Moon, Ash Ra Temple and Mythos. Have a safe trip!

Transmission 2107

Today's blast of sound comes courtesy of bands making new music in 2006 and 2007! I have a habit of overlooking new stuff in favor of road-tested past favourites in The Wohlman Archives which we remedy today. There may be newer releases from the artists showcased, but these selections are from the past year and all are very impressive!

We begin and end with the wonderful Apples In Stereo who are back in fine form on New Magnetic Dreams, go In The Fishtank with Isis & Aereogramme, adopt Orphans from Tom Waits, wade through the enormous and impressive A Lazurus Taxom from Tortoise, Get The Hell Out per instructions from David Sylvian's new band Nine Horses. Then we head to The Black Hole/Blank Canvas with Motorpsycho, make sure You Are There with Mono and walk the beach in search of Silver with Jesu! This one really worked!

HAL20

Let's Spend The ___ Playing Some Records Together!

Jerry Wexler, one-time co-owner of Atlantic Records, is quoted extensively in a recent edition of Rolling Stone that pays tribute to his old partner, the late Ahmet Ertegun. The one thing that stuck in my mind is his description of Ahmet and his friends, together, playing records communally. A lost art indeed. That is what today's transmission of RFW is all about. Sitting down with great company (you and yours) and sharing music out of The Wohlman Archives. So in honor of one of the great record men and a true inspiration let the party begin!

It is with great irony that we start with Miles Davis and Weather Report on Columbia Records, but I think Ahmet would understand. We follow with music from Tool, Trans Am, Faust, The Mothers Of Invention, Crazy Elephant, Rotary Connection, The Vagrants, Aretha Franklin (there's the Atlantic smash), Bill Withers, Donny Hathaway, Kiss, The Monkees, Crack The Sky, Lyle Lovett, Bauhaus and an out of control Grace Jones!

Transmission 2007

As I say in today's Punky transmission of RFW, my musical taste did not change in the mid-70's, so much as it got it's teeth knocked in! The upheaval in the US, England and around the world was a warning shot over the heads of music fans everywhere. Wake up! Go back into the garage. Get back to the basics. Do it yourself! 32 years later, it's funny trying to understand what everyone was so afraid of. Everything that has happened since then has taken the shock out of the original 1975-1979 scene, but not the awe! This is the music that saved both rock and roll - the real deal - Punk!

I played this show so loud my ears are ringing - get ready for La Peste, Dead Boys, X, The Sex Pistols, The Jam, The Buzzcocks, Blondie, The Real Kids, Richard Hell & The Voidoids, The Records, The Clash, The Damned, Generation X, Stiff Little Fingers, The Saints, The Vibrators, Sham 69, The Adverts, The Stranglers, and 999!

Transmission 1907

I love the timeless quality of music. Like a master's painting, poem, story or film - certain sounds, tunes and compositions can live on forever! Such is the case for the two guys that we spotlight on today's transmission of RFW.

Vocalist Mike Patto and guitarist/vibraphonist Peter "Ollie" Halsall were tied to the hip for the most fruitful years of their careers. From 1968 with their first band Timebox, into the 70's with Patto and ending up with the wonderful Boxer, these guys made some really great music together. Playing apart in such bands as Scaffold, Grimms, Tempest and Spooky Tooth, both proved they could make it on their own. But when together, it was real magic!

Unfortunately (for us and them), Mike passed away on March 4, 1979 of Lymphatic Leukemia and Ollie left us on May 29, 1992 when he overdosed on heroin. But they are with us today, loud and proud, on Radio Free Wohlman! RIP!

With horror, torture and violence ever on the rise in reality and the unreal world of cinema and television, Radio Free Wohlman takes a musical look at the machinery of execution, inflicts a Big Band salute to torture and realises first hand that pain hurts!

In today's chamber of horrors you'll find a gallows bound Alice Cooper, Deep Feeling cautioning us to beware the Guillotine, The Doors, Bennie Maupin, Ray Charles, the never-stopping Frank Zappa, The Black Keys, Savoy Brown, Millie Jackson, and a hurtful Chris Spedding. Ouch!

We dedicate today's edition of RFW to Richard 1, Coeur de Lion who reigned over England from 1189-1199 AD. A hell of a guy - just watch your neck!

The Blue Van even wrote a song about the man they called Richard The Lion-hearted. We get into a real funky groove with The Band, Family, The Main Ingredient and The Meters. Jam with Otis Rush, Otis Span and Otis Redding. Take 3 from The Rolling Stones out of The Wohlman Concert Archives and end with a show stealing pounder from The Patti Smith Group! Now that's a history lesson!

To accompany us on our forest stroll, I give to you one For The Trees from Matmos, music from The Crimson Jazz Trio, Matching Mole, Wilco, Ron Wood & Ronnie Lane, and Emmy Lou Harris with Mark Knopfler. We also get very funky with Rufus Thomas, Funkadelic and Marc Ribot. The truth of this show is that this is the music that my wife Pam and I listened to a few nights ago when enjoying a beautiful sunset and each others company! It sounded so good that I used the play list for today's transmission!

We start with a flurry of of quick ones including songs from Detroit Jr., Dr. Ross, The New Colony Six and Don Covay. We get dubby with New Age Steppers, strangely blue with The Oimels, take flight with Yonin Byashi and rock to great Wishbone Ash. A visit from Lucifer's Friend. Led Zep and Patto leads to our ending eulogy to all Dead Hollywood Stars! Can you name those pictured? See below for the answers.

Our road trip includes Golden State music by way of Chicago with the Transit Authority and Norway with Motorpsycho, a dissertation on love with Pete Townshend and Julian Cope, classic solo Steve Winwood and a post-punk set from England including Ultravox, Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark and Magazine. HAL17 - SPONTANEOUS MUSIC REACTION

What is Spontaneous Music Reaction? A good question, since I made the term up - at least for our application. SMR is a fun and different method to program today's 2-hour HAL File special. I say a word off the top of my head - like Head - and I then play the first song that I think of that references the chosen word in some way. Each song is inspired by the one immediately preceding it. I was surprised and delighted with the outcome!

HEAD

We started with a obviously oral Prince, a rebelling barrel of Monkees and long Head session with Kraan from 1972.

EVIL

A very popular subject, our set delivers Evil incarnate with Spooky Tooth, a howlin' Derek & The Dominoes, the career men in Blue Oyster Cult, a sweet Derringer, The Vines and The Kinks.

TALES

Not the opposite of head(s), we use Tales to tell stories of Kid Funkadelic, Blade Runner with Vangelis and Rumi with Charles Lloyd.

GOOD

Right beats might and Good will always prevail - so enjoy everything that is Good and get into John Coltrane, Otis Redding and James Brown. The Beatles whisper Goodnight to us all and end this successful musical experiment!

The Fillmore East and West were the places to play in the US. In the late 60's and early 70's, no proper tour of the States would be complete without playing at Bill Graham's bi-coastal concert ballrooms. When they closed in 1971, the final shows were documented in the multi-record box set and film, Fillmore - The Last Days.

The centerpiece of today's transmission is from that last week at the Fillmore West. On June 30th, Boz Scaggs, fresh out of The Steve Miller Band, and band performed at the height of their powers. Also out of TheWohlman Concert Archives, I give to you live U2 from Boston's Paradise Theater in March of 1981 and The Who at The Isle Of Wight Festival in 1970. The hour is also overflowing with music from Robin Trower, The Ramones, The Steve Miller Band with Paul Ramon(?), Paul McCartney, The Undertones, real Journey and early Santana with Neil Schon!
