Retro Christmas- 1950

I've decided to post some retro Christmas pics from 1950 onwards. Christmas used to be a big deal in my family but it's been hard since my twin died last year. We are having a quiet one at home this year instead of visiting extended family or anything like that. It's hard to think of Christmas without the childhood memories of opening presents together and more recently, chatting to David in England as we talked about how we were spending the holidays and he would tell me of any snow sighting. So I'm trying to focus on Christmas in celebration of good things in my life and things that make me happy, which is about people and memories rather than just presents and too much food.

Christmas ornaments-tutorial

We don't really do Christmas decorations at ours, but I was excited to see these ornaments made from old Christmas cards. They are different enough to catch my interest, without possessing the wintery christmas ethic which completely confuses my english husband, who fails to understand why we still have cards with snow and robins and such on them...

It's monday already!?

I had a lovely but far too brief weekend.

It started with some Gin and Tonics at home with an old friend, then onto Mr McClelland's Finishing School where Chris was dj'ing. It's a monthly old school indie night with all the old classics, particularly when Chris took half my cd collection with him! It also has a very cute logo:


Saturday we went to CERES for some plants,and I managed to get spectacularly burnt in theprocess, as I forgot to put sunscreen on. It's going to be an insanely hot summer, apparently the hottest in 10 years and I'm not looking forward to the sweltering heat.

We spend the afternoon planting our new veggie patch (potatoes, capsicum, cucumber, chillies, tomatoes) and various native plants. It looks a bit sparse but rather exciting. Afterwards we went and saw Burn after Reading which I very much enjoyed, then onto Ding Dong to hear Christina's band, The Lansburys. Then home to bed nice and tired.

Sunday we slept in then Chris went for band rehearsal and I did some crafting and grocery shopping and made lasagne for tonight's dinner party.

A good weekend!

Free Silverbeet!

• Our veggie garden is overflowing with silverbeet! It's been a staple in all kinds of veggie dishes and also got me into making silverbeet and fetta pastries the other night. They were a hit for all of us, even the young child we were babysitting!
  
  I don't have any pics, but here's how it goes...
  
  
  Ingredients:
  onion
  silverbeet
  parsley
  mushrooms
  tomato
  fetta cheese
  puff pastry
  salt and pepper
  nutmeg
  
  Method:
  1. lightly saute all veggies. The silverbeet shrinks considerably so use more than you thought needs.
  
  2. add cheese and condiments and mix through. Allow to cool.
  
  3. Defrost puff pastry ( I must confess I've never made my own)
  
  4. Cut pastry into triangles, spoon mix to the centre and fold over pasty. Seal by tweaking the edges.
  
  5.Bake at 200c for about 20 mins or until golden.
  
  You could certainly add tofu and/or whisked eggs if you would like more protein.
  So, if you are based in Melbourne and would like some silverbeet, please let us know. We also have an ample quantity of rosemary growing in our front garden.

this is....something I'm surprised I like

After topping my scales at my heaviest ever (eek!) I have joined the gym. I'm working on my disordered eating through a group program at Latrobe and today I got my gym program. It involves exercise balls, cross trainer, weights, swimming and various methods of torture. It feels good to be doing something healthy for my body and my spirit.

I had alot of fun op-shopping on the weekend and I'm busy working on bits and pieces for upcoming craft markets (not to mention battling my sewing machine!).
