Gouldian Finches - a finish!
At New Year's, I knew that there was no better way to get me back into the quilting grove than to join a swap. The trouble was, that I hadn't really seen any swaps in my Instagram feed for a while. I guess that is what happens when you are out of the loop for a couple of years, the players change and new people that I didn't follow had replaced them. Luckily, I did find a swap and joined the Quilters for Koalas swap hosted by @shoppershaz_swaphost (who hosts quite a few swaps in case you are interested). This particular swap was to benefit the wildlife affected by the fires in Australia and had an animal theme (preferably Australian animals).
Based on my partner's inspiration mosaic, it seemed she preferred paper pieced designs and liked birds in particular, so I went about trying to find something special for her. Now, when I signed up for the swap, one of the questions the form asks you is your level of experience. Instead of "beginner" or "expert", one of the choices was "Not much intimidates me", which is true for me, not necessarily because I am an expert, but more because I'll try anything, so that's what I put. Why, oh why, did I take that as a personal challenge though??? I decided to create my own paper pieced pattern for my partner.......
I started with a beautiful photo by David Clode. Then I traced the image, got my ruler out to straighten all the lines, etc. and eventually came up with a paper pieced pattern with zillions of little pieces. Ok maybe not zillions, but probably close to a hundred per bird - zero stars, would not recommend.
Then I got to work. I lucked out on the bird on the left. I found the perfect piece to use as his eye, so instead of having 15 little seams there, I ended up fussy cutting what used to be the handle of a pair of scissors. It worked perfectly.
Unfortunately, the bird on the right had a different eye, so I had to do a bunch of tiny seams there.
I also have a confession to make. I had some difficulty quilting it! It's been YEARS since I've quilted anything on my domestic machine and I'm embarrased to say that I am out of practice. Plus, I didn't make things easier on myself by doing that jigsaw puzzle low volume background. It created a ton of bulky seams that my machine was spectacularly finicky about. As a result, the quality of the stitching is much lower than I would like. I considered ripping it all out and starting over, but then realized that given those seams it was unlikely that I would do much better the second time around. Hopefully, my partner will admire it from at least arm's length. Fingers crossed that she likes it!!

One is the loneliness number - Building Blocks Tuesday
Whoa! Another Tuesday disappeared. Actually, I was hoping to have something to show you today, but fate had me working outside the last few days instead of in my sewing room. I HAVE spent most of this morning working on Deb's NY Beauty Circle of Geese. I had forgotten how fiddly the center circles could be. After sewing most of them several times, I've decided to make a small redesign and hope it goes better. I get so few sewing days at the moment, that I don't want to spend all my time sewing in frustration.
All that to say I have no new blocks to show you. I would like to share a mini that I received this summer right in the middle of my move.
I got this beauty from @modernstitchinmama on Instagram as part of the Cotton and Steel mini swap.
Just look at this gorgeous stitching!
I have definitely had quite the run of good luck in swaps this year! However, I sure am glad that I didn't sign up for any this half of the year. I can't even seem to get poor Deb's quilt done very quickly. I would have been black listed for sure.
I realize I always seem to be whining about not having anytime to quilt. While that is true, you may be wondering what I have been spending my time doing. Honestly for several weeks there it was mainly spent moving furniture around. No lie. The flooring guy wouldn't always tell me what the agenda was for the day until he showed up. And most of the time, I would move all the furniture in a room to one side while he floated the floor, then I would have to move all the furniture over to the other side of the room so he could finish the room. This back and forth was repeated again when it was time to actually put in the wood flooring.
At this stage in our remodel, I don't often have to move furniture around, but I do spend quite a bit of time directing new tradesmen around. I feel like just when I get going on a project, I have to stop for an hour to show the counter guy where all the vanities are going, or the electricians which lights I need replaced, or just talking with my general about options for laying out the tile in the bathroom. By the time I get back to my project, it is time to pick up the kids.
While it isn't true this week, I have also been spending quite a bit of time with Reagan, our newish puppy. I try to take him on daily hikes. No, they aren't just walks around here - we have hills! He is a big boy, so I try to hike for about an hour each day to keep him happy and tired. There may also be some play time and training each day too. He has learned "sit" pretty well, and we've been working on "lay down"
I've also been building a garden. Building, you ask? Yes, building. I brought home a pile of redwood (the west coast version of cedar) a few months ago. I spent some time over at my sister in law's using her miter saw to cut everything to size, and was about to put a massive raised bed together when we had all that 100 degree plus weather. Needless to say, all my seedlings died, and it was just too hot to be lugging a bunch of lumber around the yard. Last week, things cooled down a bit and I was able to get the bed built. Over the weekend, I hauled a whopping Sixty-six 50 lb bags of soil around and filled it. My back was pretty sore. This week, I finally got my rabbit fencing up around the bed, because to say we have a lot of bunnies around here would be an understatement! Also, the dog kept digging in the planter and I needed to keep him out as well if I hoped anything would grow. I started presprouting some of my seeds today, so I hope to plant them in the bed by the end of the week.
Now, some of you might be wondering....isn't it a little late for a garden. Probably, yes. I spent nearly all summer dreaming of the awesome vegetables that I would grow the moment we moved into a house with a yard. Once that actual moving in occurred, reality set in. Not only was I busy with all the stuff above, but it was so hot around here that I doubt much would have survived. Plus, we are on significant water restrictions, so even if something didn't die from the heat, it was sure to die from lack of water. So, I'm trying out a fall garden. I planning a mix of regular summer vegetables like tomatoes and green beans, but have mostly cooler weather loving lettuces, winter squash, peas, and broccoli. According to the internet, I should only expect one day of frost for the winter, which might be more because of the "El Nino" predicted, but I'm going to take my chances. These frosty days are likely to happen more towards January or February anyway. And thanks to a couple of pre-"El Nino" showers, the rain barrels I put under our eves are nearly full and will likely keep filling the more rain we get this season. So yeah, I'm doing my garden now.
Why am I so chatty today? I don't know. I guess I'm lonely. Talking to contractors and the dog all day doesn't really count as being sociable. I also feel like I've been neglecting the blog a bit for a while because I haven't had much going on in the quilty realm, and haven't really shared anything personal in a while. I hope you don't mind.
What blocks have you working on this week? I would love to see. Link up your fabulous blocks. You put a lot of hard work into them - show them off! This free linky will stay open until the first Monday of next month, but I will repost it every Tuesday until a new month starts.

TGIFF
Welcome to TGIFF! If it is your first time here, please feel free to look around. Things are a bit crazy at the moment as I am in the middle of a house move. But, I didn't want to miss a chance to host TGIFF, so I saved a little something especially for this post.
In the beginning of the year, I signed up for a bunch of fun swaps on Instagram. I just couldn't help myself, especially when the first few went so well. After churning out a bunch of minis in a row, though, I started getting a bit burned out. So, I am happy to share my last swap mini.....
This one is for the Cotton and Steel Mini Swap on Instagram. The pattern is a variation of the Good Fortune pattern listed for free on the Cotton and Steel website. I reduced it quite a bit to make it mini sized and I changed the layout just a tad. I used the Homebody collection by Kimberly Kight, and mixed in some metallic background fabric. I find it a little funny that the background fabric looks nearly the same as the concrete in the photo. Now I just need to put a label on this mini, send it off and I will be officially done with swaps for a while. That is, until I relapse again.
I could also show you a few pics of my house in boxes, something that I am definitely saying TGIFF about! But, that wouldn't be very interesting. I will say, though, that my studio had just as many boxes as my entire kitchen! Scary!

Outlander swap tote - a Finish Friday
Behold! My finished tote for the Outlander Craft Swap.
It started with a plan....
Then, I got to work on the thistle applique. I used a fusible to help give me a bit of support for those tiny jagged leaves and keep them in place. Then I used a small blanket stitch to machine applique them to my white background.
Next, I moved onto the trapunto for the knot portion. I have not done trapunto before, so I was kind of winging it. I put a small piece of batting behind the knot, then stitched on the lines of the knot. Then I used my applique scissors to trim the batting away as close to the stitching lines as possible in the areas that I wanted to be shaded.
Then, I added batting to the entire piece, and when to work adding quilting to the shaded area of the knot. I used Cindy Needham's "Scribbling" technique to do this. She talks about it a lot in her Craftsy class, Design it, Quilt It - with Cindy Needham (affliate link**). I highly recommend this class!!! It is chock full of awesome quilting designs.
When I was all done quilting the knot, I moved on to the background behind the thistles. Can't not have some swirls!
Next, I turned the whole thing into a tote bag. I debated making it a pillow.....it would have been a lovely pillow. But, I thought my partner would never get to show it off if it was just a pillow. Rarely do I see people walking around town with pillows in their hands. So, a tote. A nice, useful, practical tote (with an interior zip pocket and a regular interior pocket too).
I hope my partner likes it! I used up practically all of my favorite 2 purple fabrics. I hope she likes purple!

Aprons on the line - a finish Friday
It's a finish Friday!
As promised, here is the mini I made for my new partner in the Spring Fling Mini Swap on Instagram.
My partner was a big fan of Lori Holt at Bee in my Bonnet, and I happened to have some of her fabric on hand. Finding a pattern that would go with the vintage feel wasn't too hard either. I had one of Eleanor Burns' books, Quilts from El's Kitchen (Quilt in a Day) (affiliate link). It has some really cute blocks and projects in it.
In case you are wondering, YES, those are tiny hexies!
My partner received her quilt yesterday and really seems to like it. That makes me happy!

Saved from the Mini Quilt Black Market - a finish Friday
Is there a Mini Quilt Black Market? I've come to the conclusion that there MUST be.
When I first started doing swaps through the interwebs, I heard about people who flaked and disappointed partners who didn't receive anything in exchange for the hard work they put into their item. Now, I must tell you that I am not normally even close to an optomist, but I truly felt that these indiscretions where the result of something tragic happening in life of the offender. I certainly think occasionally that is the case, but sadly, and more frequently, it is the result of people who just don't care.
I've read enough post by people who really rant about this subject, but I don't want to go there today. I just want to report that is mini.........
the one I made for my partner in the Spring Fling swap has been
My partner didn't even bother keeping her Instagram account open long enough to make it to the first check in, and our swap leader stepped up! After several attempts to contact the offender, I've been reassigned a new partner.
This isn't the first time that this type of intervention has happened. Swap leaders are more aware of offenders than ever before. Not that long ago, the only recourse was to have an angel step in and make a quilt for those who didn't receive a swap item. Now there is a network of swap leaders that communicate with each other, and even a BLACKLIST! Plus, with more requirements for mid-swap check-ins, and mandatory progress pictures, it is harder to be an offender and get away with it. During the Rainbow Mini Swap that just finished, several participants were told to hold onto their minis until their partners showed some kind of proof that they made something. I really appreciate these new safeguards. It is not that the loss of a mini that I pour my heart and soul into, is that big of a deal. It is more that I know that the loss will be felt more by whoever the offender's partner is, and that makes me sad.
If you have never participated in a swap online and are now swearing it off, please don't! That "optimist" in me truly believes that things are going in the right direction. All the check-ins and progress pics are not tedious, they are fun. And while being told to hold onto my mini did remind me of the potential for things to go wrong, of the hundreds of people who participated in this swap, only a handful have been questioned as "offenders".
I am happy to be working on a new mini for my new partner. She deserves something made especially for her. I can't wait to share it. It is definitely a little different from things I've made in the past!

Rainbow Mini - a finish Friday
It's a finish Friday! and a colorful one too.
Behold! My finished mini for the Rainbow Mini Quilt Swap on Instagram. This mini is about 23 inches square, and each colored block is made of 25 one inch squares.
Speaking of those little scraps, I was getting a little nostalgic as I was putting them together. Most of the pieces came from my scrap bins, and I used pieces not only from my most current projects, but also from my very first quilt! So, in a way, this quilt sums up the last few years in fabric. I hope my partner likes it. I liked it so much, I decided to make one for myself too......
I mean you can't take a trip down memory lane and not want a memento for your yourself! Plus it is just as easy to make 2 at once.
I quilted it using my walking foot and one of the more decorative zigzag stitches on my machine. I learned how to do this in Jacquie Gering's, "Creative Quilting with Your Walking Foot"class (affiliate link**) on Craftsy. She shares some great tips on how to keep those quilting lines straight! It is an excellent class if you haven't checked it out - one of my favorites for sure and one I keep going back to for reference. I reviewed it a little over a year ago HERE if you want to know more.
On to the next mini! I'm currently working on one for the Spring Fling Mini swap, and I need to get going on my Outlander Craft swap item. I have several ideas wandering around in my head, but I haven't started anything yet. Oh yeah, and then there is the Cotton and Steel Mini that needs to be made and 2 fun minis for the winners of the 500+ giveaways. So, I hope you like minis because it seems like that is what I'm doing around here for a while!

Today, I'm sharing all the tiny blocks that went into my mini for the Rainbow Mini Swap.

Tula Pink Mini - finish Friday
It feels like a really long time since I've finished anything. I guess I've been working on so many different things that "the finishing" has been spread a little thin.
That said, there is nothing like a deadline to spur a finish, and the ship date for the Tula Pink Mini Quilt Swap (through Instagram) is next week. The theme for this swap was obviously, Tula Pink's fabrics, and we had to use them in the majority. My partner gave me just the right amount of information to come up with this mini for him/her.
This block is the Esme Restyled block, and I found it in issue 16 of Love Patchwork and Quilting magazine. Lynne from Lily's Quilts had a BOM feature in the magazine and this was one of the blocks.
I was going to try to fussy cut the octopi, but I didn't quite have enough fabric. In the end, I liked how it seemed like they were peeking out from sections of the block.
And, of course, I quilted it almost to submission. On Instagram, I apologized to my partner, trying to explain that I have a condition, a form of neurosis called, Blank Space Aversion Syndrome. I just can't leave background or solid fabrics alone. I went on to explain that there was hope - not for this mini, but for future ones - as I did not quilt inside the diamonds as I was tempted to do. Perhaps these little steps will one day lead to a cure?
I even quilted a little seahorse to go with the Salt Water theme. It created the perfect place to put my label on the back.
Yep, that is the back. This swap had a strict "no extras" policy, which I can appreciate, but clearly had trouble with. I was hoping by making a back just as fun as the front that my partner would have 2 minis in 1, and thus double the fun. For this reason, I did not put hanging triangles on the back. I've started hanging my minis with some refrigerator clips from Command.
This block is called the Woven Star, and is a free pattern on the StitchSupply Co's website.
So those are 2 new blocks that I tried out in one little mini!
Well, there it is, all finished up. I just need to stuff it in an envelope and send it on it's way. I hope my partner likes it.

Tula Pink mini front - Building Blocks Tuesday
I've been plenty busy around here. I am STILL cleaning and dusting from our remodel. But, I have made some significant progress there. In fact, I have removed myself from the dining room and am sewing back in my dungeon studio. There is still dust falling, but I am happy to be back in my own space.
I've even started working on several of the mini's I am making for swaps due this month and next.
This paper pieced block is called "Esme Restyled" and was found in issue 16 of Love Patchwork and Quilting magazine. I made it for my partner in the Tula Pink Mini Swap, where we had to use Tula Pink fabrics. I made this one with the green colorway of Saltwater, and I hope my partner likes it. I considered fussy cutting the fabric so that each triangle would be the same, but I didn't quite have enough. In the end, I like how the octopus seems to be peeking out of some of the triangles.
I will be working on the quilting later today, and I am hoping to keep it simple. But, you guys know me, I will probably start simple and before I know it every millimeter will be quilted. Only time will tell!
Don't forget to enter my 500 follower giveaway if you haven't already done so! You can enter by leaving a comment on this post. Good luck!

Foxy Finish - a finish Friday
I am just under the wire here, but my fox mini is done!
Even though I finished the quilting on Wednesday, I couldn't sew at all yesterday, and hand binding takes a while. Luckily, I had a bit of time today.
The shipping deadline isMonday, which is of course a post office holiday, so really TOMORROW! So, I am really just under the wire here. I have all my goodies ready to go, so it's off to the post office!
***UPDATE: Shipping deadline is actually Friday (for those of you who read my post earlier and panicked). I guess I wrote down Monday on my calendar so I wouldn't be late.
I really hope my partner likes this quilt. If she doesn't, I might cry because I didn't get to keep it myself. I suppose the cure for that would be to make one for myself, but who has time for that?
Thanks for reading today,
Jen

Quilting foxy faces - WIP Wednesday
Has it really been over 6 months since I've linked up to a WIP Wednesday? Geez!
This Wednesday, I've got two projects in progress. Today, I spent a bit of time quilting my Schnitzel and Boo Mini quilt.
I actually didn't want to quilt through those cute faces. By quilting chevrons in all the negative space, it really made those foxy faces pop. Now you know me, I really like to quilt the Dickens out of things, but I tried to hold back. I considered quilting some matchbook lines inside some of the chevron lines, but I determined that would detract from those faces. Having the lines uneven distances from one another added enough interest, so I just let it be. And I'm pretty happy with the result. Now I just need to bind and label it. I need to mail it out by Monday, so I better crack the whip!
The other WIP, is my Feather Quilt. My fellow Lazy Bums decided this would be my January UFO challenge. This was a kind choice, since it was the nearest to completion; as of December it was all SID'd and ready for quilting. I will have you all know this quilt has traveled about 500 miles in this condition without a single extra stitch. Once I realized that, I knew I needed to do something! So, I did....
Quilting was commenced and finished! I even have the binding on, it just needs to be turned and stitched down. I am heavily leaning toward machine binding so I can call it done. I will decided tomorrow.
Perhaps, I will have at least one finish this Friday. Stay tuned!
As always, thanks for reading,
Jen
