Multiple desktops are amazing, and they add to your geek rep. But on your laptop, you can't really have multiple screens (unless, of course, you've got a dual-screen Thinkpad W700). But fear not! You can get (close to) the same great functionality of two (or more!) monitors with only one.
How, you ask?
Well, it's quite simple! Just grab yourself some virtual desktops software! Those of you who have used some major Linux distros will have known about this already (and those of you who have used Spaces on your Mac), but you might have never really taken advantage of the clutter-reducing and productivity-boosting powers of virtual desktops, or you might be one of those many Windows users who is left in the dark about this breed of software.
Virtual desktops are one of the "I can never believe I survived without it" kinds of things. They let you work easily with many open windows at one time. With simply the press of a key, you can have a whole different set of open windows in front of you. If you're like me, you'll want each of your virtual desktops to have a specific purpose, like web browsing on the first desktop, work on the second desktop, etc.
Anyway, enough talk. Here's how to get virtual desktops set up on your computer:
- Windows: VirtuaWin is a great piece of software. Completely free.
- Mac: You can find out how to set up Spaces here.
- Linux: It's specific to what desktop enfironment you use. You can figure it out. After all, you are geeky enough to be using linux, right? Hah.
