We're Going to the Zoo, Zoo, Zoo; How About You, You, You?

When the Museum of Natural Curiosity at Thanksgiving Point was slammed beyond reason, we headed to Hogle Zoo instead. Clever Auntie Em found buy-one-adult-get-one-kid-free coupons at Les Schwab. The zoo was a good choice. It was a fun day.

Picnic first at Rotary Glen Park just east of the zoo

 All aboard!

 LT, HD, and FE

 The Dude with Auntie Em

Drawn as if to a magnet

 Newly completed African Savanna

Checking out the zebras from the covered terrace on the savanna

 Zebras are us

That over there is often considered the place,
but today the zoo was the place

 The binkers brave as lions

 Now that's a lion

 Elephants doing their thing

This is my favorite part of the zoo: Asian Highlands

I've never been to real Asian highlands, but whoever designed this
part of the zoo, certainly has -- it's fantastic

A lovely cool spot for some refreshment

 Ice cream anyone?

 KBT, binkers, Auntie Em

The pause that refreshes

Emigration Creek flows through the zoo

 A spin on the carousel

 The Dude abides

Elephants of the African type

The misting fan felt like Monterey Bay

A great day. Hogle Zoo just gets better and better. That's all for now.

Coming and Going

Through June the family has been coming and going, but we have stayed put. I delivered Meagan and the kids at the Provo Airport for their flight to Hawaii (via L.A.). Maren, Gavin, and family arrived the prior evening, and a day or so later, they headed to Europe leaving the boys here with us. There has been lots of good time with cousins. When Meagan is gone, we get Pippy here for dinner, etc. for the month and that is always fun. Thanks to Em and Maren for some of these photos.

An Adventure with Uncle

This morning Uncle Stephen and I drove to Salem where we met J. Wayne Francis, his legendary teaching colleague and life-long friend. We joined him and his son (together with his father in law), his grandsons, and SKT's other legendary friend, "Buddy Bill" Marshall for an ATV adventure. Our destination was what is called Tower Mountain, location of an enormous communications tower. The starting point of the trail is the Dream Mine, so called because it's location was discovered by "revelation" in the late 19th or early 20th century. It was to have provided enough gold to pave the streets below with gold. All that ever came out, however, was water. This kind of trip makes it possible for old folks like us to go places where they could no longer hike. It was wonderful!

Heading out with J. Wayne in the lead

Our destination is the pyramidal mountain on the right:
Tower Mountain

Looking north to Timp as we ascend

Just off the road is a monument to the "revelation" - two messengers:
two Nephites, Moroni?

 The crew

 Onward and upward

An entrance to the Dream Mine

 Wildflowers all along the way

A lovely, level, forested bit of road

 Blue something or other

Choke cherries remind me of Thomas Creek in Reno

 Wild sweet peas

The biggest, tallest, straightest aspens I have ever seen

In the distance LtoR Timp, Cascades, Provo Peak

 Utah Lake below

 High mountain meadows

 Columbines along the road

The tower that gives it name to the mountain

Loafer Mountain with Mount Nebo in distant right

 Picnic at the summit

 J. Wayne, SKT, and Buddy Bill

 Big brother, older brother

The road home

This was a great day and that's all for now.
