October Preaching Fourth

Elder Ian Shepley

Uruguay Montevideo

Spanish Speaking

Elder Shepley is still serving in Durazno. He has been serving his mission for almost 15 months now. He is still Zone Leader. His new companion is Elder Borst. These are the various activities they have done during these past weeks besides teaching people: they watched conference, they visited a petting zoo on one of their P-days, travelled to Montevideo (the capital of Uruguay) to have conferences with their new mission president. While in Montevideo, they visited the iconic Plaza Independencia, in downtown. They are enjoying the spring weather and look forward to being able to talk to more people.

Elder Ayden Nichols

Washington, Yakima Mission

Spanish Speaking

Hola todos, ¿cómo andan? Me quedé aquí en la ciudad de yakima, y sabes que?? Soy un entrenador. Mi bebe se llama elder headrick y el vino de sal laik citi Utah. El anda bien valiente, sin miedo.

Okay, I'll stop speaking Spanish now. If you got what I said, that's great, otherwise you'll have to use Google translate.

Time on the Mission seems to go by quickly, probably because we're so busy. We have been working hard this week to reach out to the members in our branch, teaching lessons to them and providing meaningful service. The Branch President reminded us that we need the members to help in the work, so creating relationships with them is important. We have also been trying to share more lessons with them, which helps bring the Spirit into their homes and reminds them of the covenants they have made with the Lord.

                                                      Sister Madison Hein

Cape Verde Praia Mission

My new companion, sister Webb, is literally a clone of me. It is scary. Personality: exact same. Hair: exact same. Clothes: EXACT SAME. Energy: exact same. everything about us, you guessed it, is the e x a c t s a m e.

As area goes, Calheta is SO CUTE and the people are so much more friendly than my old area. We are RIGHT on the beach which is also a dream. I look out every window of my house and you can see the ocean except for one window where I look out and see green mountains.  It's absolutely incredible. Also pigs just roam by our house all the time and I think it is so funny. Also we don't have filtered water in our house right now so I've gone to drinking milk as a result.

For missionary work, this area is extremely hard. President said it is one of the, if not THE, hardest area in the mission. Calheta is EXTREMELY catholic. You walk around and see nuns everywhere. Sometimes I feel like I'm living the Nacho Libre life.   At church today there were 3 members, the branch president, and us two sisters. Definitely a change from my last area, BUT I LOVE IT!!!  God put us here for a reason and we know we're gonna change this cute little town around. Although it's gonna be difficult, just gotta put our trust in God that He will continue to use us as instruments in His hands to share the true and living gospel with the people here. I COULDNT BE MORE STOKED FOR THIS TRANSFER IN CALHETA!!!! SISTER WEBB AND I HAVE ENTERED THE AREA and we're about to make our presence known to everyone here.

                                                Elder & Sister Bickmore

Senior Service Missionary Coordinators

The last couple of months have been very busy for us.  The Church has rolled out a new computer program to process new service mission applications and track the missionaries.  We have been charged with training the operation managers of the Church operations in our area of responsibility (North Texas and Oklahoma) as well as the stake presidents.  That's about 15 operation managers and 36 stake presidents! Whew!  That is in addition to working with the operation managers and stake presidents to make sure each operation has enough service missionaries for the operation to run.  Current critical needs include missionaries to mentor job seekers either virtually via the internet or in person at the Bishops Storehouse.  The Dallas Distribution Center located at the Dallas Temple needs customer service assistants on Tuesdays for 4 hours. It involves lifting and standing. There are also numerous opportunities to work in Family History in our area. They need records scouts, community liaisons, and photographers (they will train you).  There are also opportunities to serve via the internet as mentors in BYU-Pathway working with people all over the world.  Service missionaries are needed everywhere and you don't have to be old and retired to do it.  You're a senior if you are 26 years old!

As ambassadors for service missionary work, we travel each week to a stake conference to meet the stake leaders and service missionaries in that stake.  We hold a mini "zone conference" with the missionaries. Those meetings have been very inspiring.  There is truly a marvelous work and a wonder taking place right here in North Texas and Oklahoma!

Elder and Sister Bickmore

                                                        Elder Matt Baker

Brazil, Belo Horizonte Mission

Portuguese Speaking

Before I let y'all go, I just want to share something that's been on my mind a lot recently- urgency. The number of temples is increasing at an exponential rate. The number of people that are accepting the baptismal invitation in Belo Horizonte is at a rate that hasn't been seen since the 1990s (when they did missionary work a little differently). And prophets and apostles of God are pleading with us to get and maintain our own testimony about Jesus Christ, His Gospel, and His Church. Brothers and sisters, family and friends, my invitation to each and every one of you this week would be to be a little more urgent with everything you do. Now is the time to get and maintain a testimony. Now is the time to keep and make covenants. And now is the time to be more united with our families more than ever. I testify that at least here in the Brazil Belo Horizonte mission, the Lord is hastening His work. I promise that if each and every one of you pray this week to know how you can be a little more urgent, Heavenly Father will improve your lives in ways you didn't know were possible. He will include you in His work in ways you didn't know were possible. Heavenly Father is hastening His work in ways like never before. He's preparing the world for the Second Coming of His Son Jesus Christ. And trust me, you don't want to miss the opportunity to be a part of this great hastening!! I promise that more peace, satisfaction, and joy await each of you as you understand what urgency in the Lord's work means and seek to develop it!! (:

Elder Jacob Mass

North Dakota Bismarck

July 25, 2022

Elder Mass is on his second transfer in Whapeton, ND.  This last transfer he became the driving Elder and his companion Elder Judy is the phone Elder.

An experience that Elder Mass shared:

Later this evening me and Elder Judy went to go and visit a branch members house and have dinner with the and as we were about to leave they cautioned us to be mindful and watch for deer crossing the road at night cause it was already dark and we said we would be careful. No sooner had we left almost 10 minutes later I felt something telling me to turn on my brights on the car and as I  did so there was a herd of deer crossing the road about 15 feet in front of us in the pitch black darkness. And we were going 40 miles an hour so I had time to slow down, I know the Lord was watching and giving me guidance. 🌙🦌

The cold weather is hitting early this year so yay ️.  A small blizzard blew through on the 14th.  I also got to enjoy some new food this week. I got to try mushrooms and olives with pizza which I surprisingly did not hate normally I hate mushrooms in general. I got to have bass and homemade french fries which was so good. I got to try Goulash today which I don't know if that's how you spell it but it was so good and yes I made more muffins this week lol.

Elder Tom Hodnett

Employment Service Missionary

This will be my last newsletter, because I have been released a little early due to health issues. I have enjoyed my mission and it is with sadness that I leave before my term is complete. I even thought I would extend after my first year. But, such was not to be.

However, this past month has seen the AJS Group in Texas bring in 10 new candidates and 4 of those attend our meetings regularly. One of them was able to get a job within two weeks of coming to our group. We love to see our candidates leave.

We also had 3 other members of the group "Graduate" to new jobs that they really enjoy.

I will miss seeing these brothers and sisters work on their employment skills everyday. I see them grow in confidence as they learn and practice the skills to show employers that they are worth hiring over all other candidates.

Sister Amanda Morris

Spain Madrid

After three weeks at the Provo MTC, Amanda is looking forward to getting out in the mission field. She is schedule to leave the MTC on November 2nd, but she isn’t sure where she will be going in that no one in her district has yet received their visas. They are all praying that their visas come in soon.

She loves the missionaries in her district. However, it is a change having someone with you the entire day. Her favorite activity is attending the temple on P-day and relaxing on the hill behind the temple.

Her Spanish is coming along well. Gospel related words are a challenge, but they are coming along.

She misses everyone at home, especially her nephews an nieces.

                                                 Elder Alberto Marrero

Idaho Falls Idaho

Spanish Speaking

Elder Marrero is just getting his feet under him out in Idaho.  He hasn’t had much time to get caught up on emails and such.  However, we got to chat with him this evening and here’s a quick message you’re free to use for him.  I’ve also attached a couple of pictures.

With just under 2 weeks at the Idaho Falls Mission, Elder Marrero has already had some great experiences.  In addition to tending to the Lord’s harvest, he was also harvesting potatoes for a local service project.  He’s been translating Sacrament Service at the Spanish Branch for the past couple of Sundays.  He’s currently teaching a small Peruvian family and says that they are some of the nicest people he’s ever met.  Later this week he’ll be on a transfer with the English-speaking Elders, to teach a Spanish speaking family in the English area.

When asked what advise he’d give his siblings who are planning on serving a mission: “Study, don’t just read, the Book of Mormon.  My daily personal scripture study time has brought the Spirit so much stronger into my life.  I feel like I am prepared, protected, and guided by the Spirit, each day as I conclude my studies.”

He’ll have more to come in the weeks and months ahead.

Sister Becky Bryant

Sister Bryant will be speaking in the Plano 4th Ward Sacrament Meeting on October 30th.  She has invited the Primary Children to sing, “I Hope They Call Me on a Mission”  What a wonderful missionary she will be!

 Plano 4th Ward Missionaries

We have three remarkable sister missionaries serving in Plano 4th Ward currently  Sister Scoggins from Idaho Falls, Idaho, Sister Smith from Mountain Green, Utah and Sister Luke from Provo, Utah.  They have been teaching the amazing Teon Garmon the Gospel of Jesus Christ and today, Oct. 21, 2022, he was baptized by Daniel Marshall one of our wonderful ward missionaries.  What a great day this was.  These three Sisters or Sisternaries as we love  to call them are working hard and finding great treasure in Plano, Texas!

August Preaching Fourth

Elder Hunter Liang

HOME!!!!

Elder Liang Returned Home on July 27, 2022.  He spoke in Plano 4th Ward Sacrament Meeting the following Sunday about Change.  He gave an excellent talk.  We are glad to have him home!

Sister Kyla Radke

Washington Spokane

Spanish Speaking Mission

I am finishing up my mission in the beautiful Coeur d' Alene, Idaho area in a trio. One of my previous companions and I are training a new sister who just arrived here in the mission from the Mexico City MTC. I recently had my exit interview with the mission president and will be flying home on August 11th. I'm grateful for the opportunity I've had to serve the Lord in this in this beautiful mission with some amazing companions and supportive ward members. I'm thankful for the opportunities I've had to teach people who were interested in learning more about the church. I truly appreciate the prayers of the members of the Plano 4th Ward as I've served.

Elder Andrew Harker

Denmark Copenhagen Mission

We are now driving a car and covering two areas, basically coast to coast in Denmark. The two areas are the cities of Randers (our first area) and now Skive.  My new companion, Elder Workman, and I get along well and are seeing some good success finding new friends.

A good story from this week: we started meeting with a fellow by the name of Kristian, and he's probably the most straightforward person I've taught my entire mission. We taught him the Restoration lesson with the sisters from Århus, and we have another lesson on Wednesday. He actually asked how one can join our church, and we will probably extend an invitation to be baptized in our next lesson. The amazing thing is that his belief in Christ is founded on personal spiritual experiences and not just the Bible, so he has easily accepted the concept of additional scripture and modern-day prophets.

Elder James Harker

California Newport Beach Service Mission

So, it's time for a little update. A few weeks ago, I transferred from the Texas Dallas West Mission to the California Newport Beach Service Mission for health reasons. In other words, I have returned home to get better treatment than I could receive away from home, and while doing so, I will continue to serve as a full-time missionary in a different capacity than in Texas.

On the proselytizing mission in Dallas, I mainly found and taught people the Gospel of Jesus Christ and sometimes did service in the community. On the service mission, I will mainly be serving in the community and will sometimes have the opportunity to teach people about the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I was sad to leave Dallas but also happy and grateful for the continued opportunity to serve the Lord.

Below is a link to a talk I gave in my home ward when I returned. I feel it does a pretty good job of explaining where I am at. I will continue to send these update emails as my mission is not over yet, and it's also a great opportunity to familiarize more people with service missions. Feel free to ask lots of questions, and I will do my best to answer them. Thanks so much everyone for your support!

Elder Ian Shepley

Uruguay Montevideo

Spanish Speaking

Elder Shepley has been serving in Durazno, Uruguay for a month now and has been in the mission field for a year. He is a zone leader so he gets to travel a little more and visit other missionaries. He really likes the area. Durazno is in the center of Uruguay and its name means "peach" in English. It seems like there was only one peach tree in the area when they founded the city back in 1821 and that's how that departmento (state) got its name. His grandma was born in Durazno and even though his grandma lives now in the other mission which comprises the other half of Uruguay, there are some relatives that still live in Durazno. Elder Shepley and his companion are happy to be meeting new members and to teach the people of Durazno how much Jesus Christ loves them.

 Elder Ayden Nichols

Washington, Yakima Mission

Spanish Speaking

Elder Nichols has reached his 7 month mark on his Mission! He FINALLY received his FIRST transfer, and headed to the South Yakima/Union Gap area this week! From one of his recent emails, he reports:

"We were walking down a street one night and weren't sure where to go. I felt prompted to look at the Area Book Planner—our app that holds information and locations for members and the people we teach—and I saw there was a less active member just a few houses down. We decided to knock on the door, and a big bearded man and a lady answered and let us in. He turned out to be a guy named Shannon, and he's a really nice, less active member. The lady was a nonmember named Summer that he'd been recently seeing again. She was in a difficult spot. Her 13 year old had just broken his leg and she was just about to leave to enter rehab for alcohol abuse. She was very emotional. We did our best to help by teaching to her specific needs. We shared a message about the Atonement of Jesus Christ. We told her God was proud of her for trying to improve and make changes, and that Jesus Christ knew exactly how she was feeling, because He felt it. We talked to her about the healing power of the Atonement of Jesus Christ and that He would be right there with her if she sought Him. We also gave her a blessing of comfort and she told us afterwards that she was very grateful, and could feel a difference. Shannon was tearing up almost the whole time. We came out of that lesson feeling the spirit so strongly, like we were on top of the world. I testify that Jesus Christ lives and the Book of Mormon contains the fullness of His Gospel, something that is truly beautiful and good, not something to be afraid of, or intimidated by. Just do your best and Jesus will be right there next to you. He loves you infinitely and is waiting to help you in every trial you have."   Elder Nichols

Sister Madison Hein

Cape Verde Praia Mission

Some phenomenal news, WE MARKED A BAPTISMAL DATE WITH NIVALDO FOR AUGUST 20!!!!! this is a miracle… he is a 16 year old boy who lives in Ponta d'Agua.  Since the beginning, he wanted to be baptized SO BAD but his mom refused to give him permission. It was a big battle the elders were fighting for a very long time. BUT THEN the elders left and sister Arana and I started teaching him. We did some "research" and found out that one of the members moms is very good friends with Nivaldos mom. SO we taught Nivaldo and his mom with three friends from church and the lesson was incrível demais!!! Flash forward to four days later, sister Arana and I go to teach Nivaldo Saturday night and he said HIS MOM GAVE HIM PERMISSION!!!! MILAGRES!!!! His mom said he is old enough to make his own decisions and decide what is good and what is bad. She is still very worried for the hate he will get for it but Nivaldo says he doesn't care because he knows it is true!!!! HAPPY DAY!!!

Our district is composed of 14 members. Including 4 sisters and 10 elders. I felt a spiritual moment yesterday after our classes were over. It was a feeling of intense sadness but my heart was very happy at the same time as if I felt very at peace with myself. I started this MTC experience with a bit of a sore throat so I couldn't speak as much and I prayed last night for it to be healed not knowing that this morning it would be completely healed. My first few days in Provo were a blast I got to see the amazing Provo and Bountiful temples with some amazing views!!! I love my district, onward ever onward️.

Plano 4th Ward Missionaries

Transfers were this week and Sister Hatch was transferred to Pittsburg out East. Sister Luke Received a new companion, Sister Carr who traded her car for a bike and a stay in Plano, Texas.  We are thrilled to have her here. We are so happy to welcome their recent baptism Sister Angie Jorgensen into Plano 4th Ward.  How we love Angie!

Elder Tom Hodnett

Employment Service Missionary

In July, we learned of a family in Austin, who we know, who are looking for a new church to join. There boys go to High School at a school where the Choir Director is a member of the church. I found this out through conversations with one of the candidates that had joined our AJS group from Austin, who has since graduated from our group. It is his wife who is the Choir Director and he is a counselor in the Bishopric. I was able to contact him and let him know that the family is looking. The Ward will be getting the youth to invite the boys to church activities and see if they can get them interested in attending church on Sundays.

There are many opportunities for missionary work when we are involved in the work of the Lord.

Elder Hunter Liang

Elder Liang was not available for comment this month.  We hope he is just too busy sharing the gospel to send us his article.  How we love you Elder Hunter!

Sister Kyla Radke

Washington Spokane

Spanish Speaking Mission

I am currently serving in Coeur d'Alene, a beautiful city in North Idaho. My companion and I have been working hard to find English and Spanish-speaking people in the area who are interested in learning about the Church. We are teaching a couple of really cool people currently. The ward is very supportive and always eager to help us. We have started holding a second-hour Sunday school in Spanish and the ward members have been a big help. I'm having the best P-days of my mission now that the weather is warming up. We've been to Coeur d'Alene Lake and Hayden Lake, hiking in some beautiful areas, and we rode the Hiawatha bike trail on Monday. I can't believe my mission will be ending in two months and I'll be heading back to BYU. I have loved serving the Lord in this mission so much!

Elder Andrew Harker

Denmark Copenhagen Mission

Elder Andrew Harker is enjoying a change of scenery on his mission in Denmark, as he moved from mission media to the field! It’s been an exciting and welcomed change to get out more with the people. Here’s a recent excerpt from an email:

"On Thursday, we were going out to street contact. On the way to the city center in Randers where we missionaries have street contacted for the past 7 generations, I mentioned to Elder Gardner that it might be beneficial to stop beating the dead horse and find a new area to street contact. So we walked across the street to a park. Moving up in the world! Or down, because Randers is built on a hill.
Regardless, the first bloke we stopped in the park was a self-proclaimed Christian, and a little loopy, but when we asked if he would like to hear a message about Jesus, instead of denying us like I was expecting, he said yes! Then we asked when he had time to meet and he said now. After a brief side glance and shrug, we gleefully accepted his offer.
We taught him the lesson about the Restoration, and it was received well. He seemed to agree with what we were saying generally. Towards the end of the lesson, I felt a thought come into my mind that I should invite the man to be baptized. Immediately after came the thought of how crazy that was.
"Terrible idea! That'll be a great way to scare the man off."
However, another impression followed, recalled in the form of the wise words of my companion Elder Gardner:
"I've found the first impression is usually the Spirit, and the second is my mind trying to talk myself out of it."
Well, to be honest I couldn't really argue with that one, so after saying a hasty prayer begging to not look like a yokel, I extended an invitation for the man (Daniel) to be baptized. The look of sheer terror on Elder Gardner's face would have been unparalleled if not for the look of sheer amazement on my face when Daniel said yes.
"I can't believe that actually worked!" (Said in my head of course.) Anyways, Daniel now has a baptism date and is progressing well towards that goal. The Lord doesn't often work in ways we deem probable, which is probably a good thing. After seeing how He singlehandedly 'roided** my testimony in an hour, we'll see what happens next week.”   **bolstered

Elder James Harker

Texas Dallas West

Spanish Speaking Mission

Elder James Harker is working in a new Spanish-speaking area of Dallas called Casa Linda.  The Dallas Arboretum is actually in his area now.  Catch him there studying or making calls on occasion! He was excited to be able to get back to the temple last week. The Dallas West Mission will be able to attend the temple every few months now.  Here’s an update from him:

"It was an interesting week. I got to go on a cool exchange with my Zone Leader, Elder Thomas Powely. What a legend. Unfortunately, he's headed home after this transfer as he is finishing his mission. We had a great time, and together we worked on staying focused on missionary work throughout the day and being the best disciples possible. He was originally called to Madagascar but due to Covid he was never able to go. We had a really cool lesson with a man named Michael. We really connected, and I was able to share some personal experience and advice with him. He wants to be a member of the Church but has some large obstacles. Please keep him in your prayers!
I also was able to start the production (filming) of a new mission video. We filmed a man named John about his conversion to the Church, how it affected him, and how it relates to Joseph Smith's first vision story, specifically how the light of Jesus Christ descended gradually upon him. It was a great experience, but the adversary seriously wanted to impede the making of that video. We had all sorts of technical difficulties and there were a lot of sirens that interrupted the filming. But, despite all the trouble, we successfully got the recording. Pound sand, Satan!"

Elder Ian Shepley

Uruguay-Montevideo

Spanish Speaking

Elder Shepley is still in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay. He has been there since January so he thinks he may get transferred in June or July. He likes the area because he said the members are strong and very faithful. They are having several baptisms. His current mission companion is Elder Buck. They will have a new mission president in July. It is winter in Uruguay and even though it is cold they are enjoying the yummy stews Uruguayans prepare in winter. Sister Liliana Shepley just returned from a Book of Mormon Video Filming.  She is going to be in the scene with Captain Moroni and the Title of Liberty.  We will have to wait until next year to see it.

Elder Ayden Nichols

Washington, Yakima Mission

Spanish Speaking

Elder Nichols is still happily serving in Toppenish, Washington, and has a new Companion— Elder Tilby. They are getting along well and working hard to find those who are ready to be taught the Gospel. This past week, the Washington Yakima Mission had a special Conference for all of the Missionaries. They got to hear from Elder Bednar, and Elder Nichols had the opportunity to shake his hand and talk to him briefly afterwards. Elder Bednar asked where he was from, and Elder Nichols responded, “Dallas, Texas”. Elder Bednar then said that no one is actually ever from Dallas, so Elder Nichols clarified and said he was from Plano, TX, to which Elder Bednar responded, “Oh yes, Plano.” Elder Nichols is still serving in the Spanish Branch as well as an English ward, and he is growing to love the people he serves. He is still in a sketchy area, but says he “kinda likes that”, so his emotional resilience is shining through! He is at his 5 month mark and time is flying by!

Elder Matt Baker

Brazil, Belo Horizonte Mission

Portuguese Speaking

Starting on Tuesday, I had a 3-day division with our district leader, Elder Jacob! We spent a lot of time in this one favela which was super cool because the people there were incredibly receptive to hearing the message of the Restoration! We found some really awesome people that accepted baptismal dates, so I'm excited to see those baptisms come to past for the elders serving in that area! It was a really good division as I learned 3 very valuable lessons:

1- Missionary work should be normal and natural: Elder Jacob is really good at being normal and natural with people in the street and when knocking doors!

2- Missionary work should be fun: being with Elder Jacob was a ton of fun!! When we were walking in between lessons or doors, we were always joking or singing sort of song that really just lightened the mood a ton! These first few weeks I've been here, I've been so focused on trying to doing everything perfectly that I haven't been having a ton of fun. But serving the Lord should be fun, so I'm going to work on trying to have more fun in the work while still serving with all my heart might mind and strength!

Sister Madison Hein

Cape Verde Praia Mission

Sister Hein has been busy in the Provo MTC learning Portuguese and how to teach the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  She loves her companion, thinks her district is the best in the world and is being as social as she can be (that's her style).

On Wednesday, June 15, she leaves for Cape Verde and couldn't be more excited (except for the long plane ride - Salt Lake to Amsterdam, Amsterdam to Lisbon, Lisbon to Cape Cape Verde).  When you think of Sister Hein, have no worries.  She is loving it all.

Elder Tom Hodnett

Employment Service Missionary

The past couple of months the Texas Active Job Search (AJS) Group has been instrumental in helping 8 people obtain employment. Each person extended their gratitude for the help the group provided. They said that, because of the training they received in the group, they were able to get a better job with better pay than they would have on their own.

One of our candidates even got a job as the Building Manager for the McAllen Texas Temple, which is still under construction. He is so very happy and feels blessed to have this opportunity.

I love this mission. It is so satisfying to help members and non-members find better jobs and improve their ability to provide for themselves and their families.

Right now I am struggling with some health issues that are keeping me from participating and I ache to get back. I love this work.

Plano 4th Ward Missionaries

Sister Hatch was just transferred into our ward and is from Gilbert Arizona. She just passed her 9 month mark.  Hermana Milla from Draper Utah and Guatemala (Spanish speaking)  just passed her seven weeks on the mission..  What great missionaries they are. They bring such a great spirit with them when they come to our homes to share a meal and to teach lessons.  We are so blessed to have them in our Plano 4th Ward!
