December 2021 Edition of Preaching Fourth

Sister Kyla Radke

Washington Spokane

Spanish Speaking Mission

Sister Radke got to trade in her English tag for her Spanish tag a couple of weeks ago when she was transferred to an older part of downtown Spokane. She now serves in both a Spanish branch and an English ward. She enjoys teaching an English class to Spanish speakers one evening a week. She and her companion live in a beautiful old house that has been converted into apartments (see photo). The view from her window is great. You can see that winter has arrived in Spokane!

Elder Andrew Harker

Denmark Copenhagen Mission

Elder Andrew Harker continues to work on his tech calling as a missionary while trying to juggle his other missionary responsibilities.  He completed and posted his first ad for free Danish classes, (see photo below) and they received a record 100 referrals in 4 days.  They planned on leaving the ad up longer but had to take it down, as they did have enough missionaries to  keep up on more referrals!

The Christmas ad he spoke of last month will be released in a few days.  Here are a few of his own words regarding that project:

"Storrs and I did a lot of work ironing out details for our Christmas advertisement...We're filming one scene in a forest, and we were having difficulty finding a suitable location in this huge forest near the mission home by the name of Geelskov. Suddenly, as we're tromping through the piles of golden and red leaves under a canopy of pine trees, we come across a perfect little clearing to film the scene in. The only problem was that it was right in the middle of a mountain biking trail.

Storrs and I discussed the risk of just shooting the film there without telling anyone, but I don't think the mountain bikers would be too happy if they collided with a bunch of scrub Americans and some camera gear. Suddenly, as we were talking, a mountain biker came zooming down the trail. He stopped and we talked to him to ask about how we could go about filming there. Then he said that he was the trail manager! He said that we could totally film there if we emailed him the date and time, and set up a sign at the top of the trail warning people.

It was perfection. No coincidences here. I don't believe in those anymore. I'm glad I have this opportunity to serve as the Lord's instrument. I love telling people how our ad got 100 referrals, but I should be saying the Lord's ad. Everything I do isn't mine, I do it for the Lord for the benefit of my fellow man. I think with that perspective being a missionary is more rewarding."

I'm hoping Andrew receives his Christmas package on time, seeing that Danish customs is very, very slow these days!

Elder James Harker

Texas Dallas West

Spanish Speaking Mission

On the other hand, Elder James Harker will have no trouble receiving his Christmas package on time, seeing that he is currently only 50 minutes away from Plano haha.  He was recently transferred to a new area in southwest Dallas called West Bear Creek.  He is excited about finding new people to teach together with his new companion Elder Frederick (a world-class speed skater who hopes to make it to the Olympics.  As a side note, this has been fun for James to learn about as he has played some ice hockey and enjoys skating.)

From Elder Harker's last newsletter:

"The Lord God truly works miracles. We happened upon an interested young man by the name of Felipe. He was nineteen years of age, and originally from Mexico. Felipe was struggling with a smoking habit and with alcoholism, brought about by social pressures from his peers when he was younger. After observing the predicament of his father, a drug addict and homeless man who was unresponsive in every sense of the word, Felipe had decided that he needed a change in his own life..

..At the end of our first meeting with Felipe, I felt the Spirit of God guiding my mind. A spiritual impression came to me that I needed to ask Felipe if he would prepare himself to be baptized. At first I hesitated, because I felt he did not know enough, and that he was not in the ideal position. to make such a commitment. However, I decided to heed the words of the Spirit, trusting that the Lord would place the right words in my imperfect mouth, and that His Spirit would fill in the gaps I was not capable of filling. On Sunday, the 28th of November, 2021, Felipe agreed to prepare himself to be baptized on the 19th of February in the coming year. This was an unusually long period of time to wait, but he had told us he would be in Mexico for a month and a half, so we felt he needed some extra time to learn and progress towards his goal.

...Despite our imperfections as missionaries, everything seemed to slide into place, right when it needed to. God does work miracles in this day and age. I was grateful for His help and Spirit in my life, and was willing and ready to to be an instrument in His hands..."

Elder Braxton Barneck

Brazil Salvador Mission

Elder Barneck is in the final countdown. Here will make the 12 hour flight home December 16th and arrive in Dallas early in the morning on December 17th! Yay!

Elder Barneck is serving as a zone leader for his last transfer and is working hard until the very end. Here is an excerpt from his latest email.

God loves you. He wants to bless you. He wants to help you. Miracles exist. You will see more miracles in your life as you increase your faith. I know these things to be true, I know for a surety that they are true. Let's all increase our faith this week and watch the miracles fall into our everyday routine. Beleza?

"The answer to each of your challenges is to increase your faith. That takes work."

Elder Ian Shepley

Treinta y Tres Uruguay

Elder Ian Santiago Shepley is still in Treinta y Tres (a state of Uruguay) and very busy. It has a population of 48,134 in over 3,679 sq miles; that’s over twice the size of Collin and Dallas County combined! He was recently made a senior companion, and for a couple of weeks was training a new missionary that had arrived in Uruguay from the MTC. His mission is planning on having the 56 local missionaries train for one or two weeks at a time because 150 new missionaries are soon to arrive from the United States by the end of December.

He currently has a new companion from the United States. His new companion, Elder Rose, has been in the mission field for 16 months but is now new to Uruguay. They are still traveling to Montevideo once per month for meeting and planning sessions. He is feeling more confident now that he knows most of the rules of the mission and he feels like he is starting to enjoy the mission 100%. Besides doing missionary work, he has been working on his family tree. We recently learned that one of his ancestors was born and died in Treinta y Tres.

Elder Hunter Liang

Orlando Florida

Chinese Speaking

I absolutely love serving the people here in Orlando. I've served almost my entire mission in a little Chinese branch with about 20 members, and there aren't too many Chinese people around. The work here is very unique in that our finding and retention methods require a ton of creativity and inspiration. We had some incredible miracles this week, with people that are super prepared to progress showing up to Church. This is, without a doubt, the Lord's work!

                             Elder & Sister Bickmore

Senior Service Missionary Coordinators

We are serving a 2 year Senior Service Mission.  We are the Senior Service Missionary Coordinators for North Texas and Oklahoma.  We act as a liaison between the Stake Presidents (36 stakes) and the Operation Managers for the Church operations in our area (about 40) to make sure the operations have the service missionaries they need to run smoothly.  We help prospective missionaries with finding a mission they would like to serve and with their paper work so they can receive a call.  Some of the operations that missionaries in our area are serving in are the Bishops' Storehouse, Employment Resources, Family History (records extraction), BYU Pathway, Family Services (Addiction Recovery Group Leaders), and Temple non-ordinance workers.   And, lastly, we provide orientation and training to Stake Presidencies, Bishops, and Stake Senior Service Missionary Specialists to help promote Senior Service Missions among the stake members. We are Senior Service Missionary Ambassadors and we love serving.

Preaching Fourth October 2021

Sister Kyla Radke

Washington Spokane Spanish Speaking

I'm finishing up my third transfer in my current area, the Spokane East Zone, where I serve in a family and YSA ward. Young adults are very receptive to the gospel and super fun to teach; I have loved serving in the YSA, it is a absolute blast. In my time here we've been blessed to see the baptisms of two new ward members; Bill and Kristi. They are some of my best friends and will do great things in the church!!

In our family ward, we have been teaching the most prepared family; Danelle, Eric, and their 13 year old daughter Taylor. Taylor was baptized a few weeks ago but her parents needed to get married in order to be baptized which they were last week! We are looking forward to their baptism in less than two weeks now.

We have two other sweet friends named Brian and Hayli who are getting baptized this Saturday!

I have been so blessed to have the opportunity to help teach and get to know these wonderful people and see them make the covenant of baptism. I am equally grateful for the two amazing companions I was blessed with the opportunity of training in this area., Sister Evans and Sister Traveller. I can't wait to see all that they do and become on this journey!

Have a great week and enjoy every moment!

Love,
Sister Radke

Elder Andrew Harker

Denmark Copenhagen Mission

Elder Andrew Harker recently finished his training, his trainer finished his mission, and he is now assigned to be the "tech missionary" for the mission and to finish training a new missionary. He is excited but also humbled by all of the new responsibility. As the tech guy, he is in charge of all of the advertisements the mission creates and sends out on social media to try to get referrals for teaching. Social media has proven more worthwhile to obtaining contacts than street contacting or going door to door. Their mission has purchased new film equipment, and Andrew is using his past film experience from high school and college to create and film these ads. He will probably be travelling throughout the mission to seek out new and different opportunities for these ads, including to Iceland which is part of his mission. It has started raining a lot in Denmark, but he is enjoying the cooler temperatures. He continues to work on improving his Danish language skills, and loves the food and people he comes in contact with. We will keep you posted on his first ad which is a Christmas ad which must air before too long to take advantage of the upcoming season.

An excerpt from his last newsletter:
"Really quick I want to tell you about our Christmas ad. Basically, we're going to stick a fully decorated Christmas tree in the middle of the woods. But Danish Christmas trees have live candles on them, so I'm trying to figure out how to safely make this cool looking commercial without having to constantly live life looking over my shoulder for Smokey the Bear. Additionally, I'm trying to figure out how to get a Christmas tree in November, how to decorate it, how we're going to film when it constantly rains here in Denmark... Please pray for me haha." Elder James Harker

Texas Dallas West Spanish Speaking Mission

Elder James Harker is currently in the Oak Cliffs area of Dallas. We recently snuck some cinnamon rolls onto his doorstep during General Conference. We successfully delivered them without being seen. It was a fun adventure! We hope to make future contraband deliveries since we have the advantage of being so close. James is on his third transfer, having finished his training and now with a new companion. His area consists of a very large ward, but with not many active members, maybe 60 out of 300. In addition to finding new ways to work with the leadership to meet members and find ways to reach those that aren't currently attending, he is teaching English classes through the church program called English Connect. Also, every Wednesday the Oak Cliff missionaries are involved in a gardening service opportunity. Local residents have set up a program to keep the parks up on their own, as the city is slow to work on the upkeep of the parks. Every Wed morning they work with local residents who are dedicated to keeping their areas nice, with planting and clean-up of their parks. James' Spanish is coming along and he enjoys meeting new people every day to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with. He is glad Texas weather is cooling down!

An excerpt from a recent newsletter:
"I found it a little more difficult to recognize the promptings of the Holy Ghost at that time. Previously, in the transfer before, I felt more often a constant flow of revelation. However, for reasons unbeknownst to me, at least at the time, that gift seemed to diminish until I felt very little. That bothered me very much; I felt I was still doing my best to be spiritually connected to God, but despite my best efforts, the connection appeared weak....Nevertheless, I attempted, to the best of my ability, to continue to place one foot in front of the other, constantly telling myself I would have faith that I would be ready for what would come next....The work unceasingly rolled on, as we discovered many people interested in the Gospel of Jesus Christ at the time. Compared to before, they seemed to come in droves to hear us teach, or more accurately, they readily listened, as we spent our time searching for interested Spanish-speakers." October 18, 2021

Elder Braxton Barneck

Brazil Salvador Mission

Elder Braxton Barneck is serving in the Brazil Salvador mission. After coming home in March of 2020 because of Covid after only 10 weeks in Brazil, he is finally back. He was reassigned to the Michigan Detroit Mission and spent about 8 months there and returned back to Brazil in February of this year. Elder Barneck is doing great and having a great time serving the Lord. He is serving as a District Leader right now and training a new missionary. This last week Elder Soares spoke to the missionaries in Brazil and he said that was the highlight of his week. He was able to sit and listen to him speak and said it was like listening to English because he understood it so well. Elder Barneck only has one transfer left and will be back just in time for Christmas!

Here is something that Elder Barneck wrote from one of his past letters.

This week I studied Gratitude! And something I learned is that Gratitude helps us better trust in Jesus Christ. The way we can increase our level of gratitude is through remembrance of our blessings. The more we focus on Christ and remember what He has done for us, the easier it is to see His hand in our lives. Now here's the part where we are able to better trust in Him. When we remember the blessings that we've been given through living in a way that allows us to better see these blessings (choosing to do things that help us remember Christ) we receive a stronger testimony that the Lord is with us and He is there blessing us and guiding us in our lives. Having Gratitude allows us to unlock this special sight of seeing more blessings which allows us to trust in the Lord because we know He is there. The end

Elder Ian Shepley

Treinta y Tres Uruguay

Elder Shepley has been assigned to serve in Treinta y Tres, Uruguay. The city of Treinta y Tres is the capital of the state of Treinta y Tres, in east-central Uruguay, near the Olimar Grande River. Cattle and sheep are raised widely; wheat, corn, rice, oats, and linseed are the main crops.

Elder Shepley, and his companion, Elder Brajus from Uruguay, have been working a lot because their mission is not working at full capacity due to the Covid pandemic. They currently have only 56 missionaries (54 of them are Uruguayans). This year, between the months of November and December his mission will receive 150 missionaries, most of them from the United States.

They are working very hard, they have had baptisms every week and the people of Treinta y Tres have been very nice to them. They are the only missionaries in Treinta y Tres right now. They cover 7 wards and branches. They ride bikes and each Sunday they alternate so they can visit those wards and branches. Once the 150 missionaries arrive in Uruguay, they will have 8 more missionaries in that state.

Every month, they travel to Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, to attend missionary conferences, and to talk to the mission president. President Escobar is great, he makes sure he talks to each missionary and is always available when they need him. These conferences are important to them because they get to see other missionaries. Since they are the only missionaries in their state, their p-days are not much different from any other day. He loves the people and serving a mission.
