if all of the raindrops were lemon-drops and gum-drops,
oh, what a rain it would be.

vienna!
we arrived in vienna around 11 in the morning, and the first place we stopped by was Naschmarkt + fleamarket. it was a lot like the covered market, except it wasn't covered.
there was a tiny little pub-like place that was full of locals, young and old. we stepped in, and the entire pub turned and stared at us...it was awkward. we looked around for a table in that tiny place, while everyone watched, half-amused. a super-friendly couple decided to help us out and called us over, so we joined their table, which they shared with another couple, and sustained some sort of a conversation using hand signals and broken sentences over a lunch of schnitzel and fried chicken (:
random shots of the city center. the horse on the top right was really cute (: walking past the stables in the spanish riding school, we stopped to take a look. this horse was peering around, but when it noticed me taking a photo, it stopped and posed for a shot (:
sacher torte from hotel sacher! yumm.
we stopped by demel for tea one day...and like many others, they've come up with their own version of the sacher torte. the original is 100x better. i promise.
we actually tried this before the one at hotel sacher, and i was terribly disappointed ): i thought all sacher tortes tasted like that one. it wasn't all bad at demel though, their truffletorte was yummy and they had an area where you can watch their bakers in action (:
we spent an entire day in the schonbrunn palace. we weren't allowed to take photos in the rooms - it looked a lot like the palace in versailles.
having been to the singapore zoo, i've always thought that no other zoo will ever match up, but the schonbrunn zoo was surprisingly enjoyable! (: the animals, for one, were a lot more active here, though that's probably because the weather is a lot colder; and we got to get much closer to the animals than we do in the singapore zoo. also, we had to walk a lot less to get from exhibit to exhibit.
i dont quite know why but i was terribly excited about open-faced sandwiches - there's a greater toppings:bread ratio (: we ended up ordering 3 with gherkins :s because the labels were all in german ):
tafelspitz!! (:
super super yummo.
boiled beef does not sound particularly appetising, and we were baffled as to why it was one of the emperor's favourite dishes. the first place we tried tafelspitz, it tasted like chinese radish and carrot soup. although the beef was very tender, it was hardly spectacular.
after trying the tafelspitz in rudi's beisl, we were converted (: we ended up sharing 3 mains between the 2 of us (: rudi's beisl wasn't recommended by the guidebook but lj found out about it whilst trawling through austrian food forums (which were in german...). he gets full credit for the yummy food we had throughout the trip <3
okies. back to work!

i just finished a tub of blueberries. yumm. seems i'm always eating.
malaysia night on saturday, in exam schools this year. the hall is lovely.
taejae's (belated) birthday dinner last night (xiuli baked an amazing strawberry shortcake!), followed by a few rounds of pit shout it out, which gets rather rowdy with 8 people (: we missed you, moonhee! ): come back soon!
last week of term!
5.3.10 @ 11:41:00 AM
1 more week of classes before easter break (:
~3 weeks till i head back to singapore!
i think i need to go on a veg&water detox diet for a week.
we went down to waitrose over the weekend and bought a 1 kg chunk of beef forerib, roasted it with salt and pepper (yumm) and finished all of it in one sitting :s and yesterday, we roasted a shoulder of lamb (double yumm)- we poked holes to bury garlic and rosemary beneath the surface, all you could see was little sprigs of rosemary at the surface that looked like little tufts of grass - and braised a sheep's heart stuffed with mushrooms and garlic. not sure why we decided to try it, we just saw it at the farmer's market and decided to give it a go. it's all right, but not spectacularly tasty, or maybe we just didn't cook it well. hmm. actually, the thought of eating a heart is quite a nauseating.
i also had my college's subject dinner last night. I'd completely forgotten abt it, until my tutorial partner gave me a call. My tutor told him to tell me that I -had- to turn up and that he "didn't care what i was wearing". So there i was scruffy and all while everyone else was in their suits and dresses (: We had parsnip soup, guinea fowl and ginger cheesecake, followed by fruits, chocolate and coffee. I didn't really want to eat much because i kept thinking abt the roast lamb back home.
there's a talk by tim keller tonight in the town hall - "belief in an age of scepticism"! (:
