Design Wall Monday

Happy Design Wall Monday!  My Garden Oasis has been on the design wall for several months now.  I love this quilt so much, but all of the little squares, angles, and bias pieces make it a bit of a beast to piece!

The top is just about finished - I just have to finish sewing the last five rows together and add a quick border - but it's so big I'm trying to decide whether to attempt it myself on my little machine, fork over the money to have a professional long arm quilter do it, or wait to do it until I have a new machine sometime in the {hopefully not too} distant future.  I really admired the work of a gal named Cathy, of Quilts by Cathy, at the Valley Quilt Guild annual show in Yuba City last month, and I'd love to explore working with her, so I'm kinda leaning that way ....

... especially since Little Man #2 is set to make his debut in no less than 3 months!  I'm hoping to put the finishing touches on Little Man #1's baby quilt this week ... probably right in time for him to move into his new, big-boy room, decorated with the Super Mario characters, per Daddy's request!

After seeing some of the amazing 8-bit Mario quilts out there - you can check out my favorites on pinterest - I'm thinking that there might be a Mario quilt {or two, just to be fair} in my future ...

{Yes, I do realize that over 5,000 individual squares, times two blankets, I might be slightly insane ... but I love it a little too much!  Definitely insane!}

Happy sewing!

Monday Mis En Place

Over the weekend, I had the chance to sit down and leaf through a fabulous book my mom lent me:

I've always been a cluttered person and my sewing space is no exception!  The fact that I have a toddler really only compounds the problem, since I only have small windows of sewing time and I rarely  "waste" that time cleaning up in between projects or organizing my space.

On top of that, we are expecting bundle of joy #2 in July ... which means that Bundle #1 is moving into his big boy bedroom next month ... and I have to find a place for all of the sewing goodies I've stashed there now ... in my office/sewing room/fabric shop ... and still be able to function in that space!

So, it's time to make some permanent changes!

Step #1 in Carolyn's book is to identify the causes of the clutter.  Easy enough - that's me. :)  I tend to pile things (on the desk, the floor, my workspace, the bookshelf) rather than sort through them and put them away.  I also have a nasty habit of starting new projects on top of old projects, and then rearranging stacks as I need things.

Once you've identified the root of the problem, the idea is to do a deep clean and then reorganize all your goodies into organized stations based on your needs.

While I can't do any heavy lifting right now, and bending over is a bit of a challenge, I did manage to at least straighten up my main workstation this morning!

My first station is my ironing station, which sits at table height (so that I can press while sitting down).  It's perpendicular to my sewing machine so that it's quick and easy to sew, press, and then sew some more - all by just swiveling in my chair.  My design wall sits directly behind the iron board, so that it's easy to lay out blocks as I finish pressing them.  This isn't a new set-up for me, but I find that it really works and so it's definitely staying in place.

My sewing station is in the corner of the room, right next to the only window.  Unfortunately, it's a difficult place to photograph, but again, the set up near the ironing board works for me.  What doesn't work is that all my thread and sewing machine accessories are housed all the way across the room in the closet.  Most of the time, this isn't a problem, as I'm piecing with my giant spool of white thread ... but I'm thinking that it would be nice to have everything within arms reach.

I'm lucky enough to have a 70" rotary mat, so I usually use the end closest to the sewing machine as a staging area for block construction and trimming.  This week, I'm working on my Civil War piece, Shiloh.  These blocks just fly together, even with the paper-pieced borders, so I'm hoping to be posting a finish and the new pattern by the end of the month!

The end of the table houses my fabric for my current projects - I'm limiting myself to just two on the table at a time! - along with a second trash bin and any tools that I'd like to keep handy.  There's a spare monitor living there at the moment, but it'll hopefully be finding it's more permanent home on our desk in the very near future.

Finally, some of my more frequently used my sewing gadgets (which are in desperate need of tidying) are hanging on the wall at the end of the table.  The rest are housed in my sewing boxes in the closet.  Again, I've had this set up in place for quite awhile, but for the most part, it seems to work for me.

All in all, I think I'm off to a good start.  Hubby is planning on hanging some of those fabulous Ikea shelves along the wall, so that I'll be able to easily move projects out the way when I need to cut yardage, or assemble kits.

Next up ... the overstuffed bookshelf ... and in all honesty, the pile in front of it. :)   Happy sewing!

Design Wall Monday

Well, my original intention was to finish my mammoth effort to clean up my sewing space and finish cataloging my stash before even thinking about sitting down at the sewing machine ... let alone starting a new project.  But, as I was choosing the fabric for the first of my big 2013 de-stash posts, I decided that I just wasn't ready to let go of my Cherish Nature hoard.  In fact, while I was looking through some scraps, I discovered that I had a whole slew of 1 1/2" strips!

Please excuse my super dirty ironing board cover!
So, rather than let them go, I decided to make a quick stacked coin quilt.  I've never made one before, so it should be a quick, new, little project that I'm hoping to have knocked out and finished in less than two weeks!

My basic inspiration is the "Stacked" quilt by AmandaJean of CrazyMomQuilts from several years back.

Photo courtesy of CrazyMomQuilts for Moda Bake Shop
I think that for my version, I'm going to play around with stacks of different widths just to add a little something.  My goal is to make the quilt as scrappy and random as possible, which is something that my OCD self sometime has difficulties with.  I will admit, though - I did sit down and do the math to figure out how to divide my remaining prints equally between the stacks ... you know, for the sake of balance ...

What have you chosen as your first project of the year?  Need a little inspiration?  Be sure to stop by Design Wall Monday over at Patchwork Times to sneak a peak at some other design walls (or ironing boards, in my case) out there in blogland.  Happy Sewing!

Design Wall Monday!

I'm so happy to actually have finished some sewing this weekend, even in spite of the triple digit heat wave we're experiencing.  Last week's epiphany led to several more "Ah Ha!" moments over the weekend, and I was finally able to complete several blocks in my latest project!

I recently treated myself to an Etchings fat quarter bundle to use specifically with this pattern and the fabric is just so beautiful to work with!  It's so silky, which makes piecing and pressing a dream!

Eventually, these cross blocks will be joined with floral blocks to make an 80" square quilt!  I'm not quite sure if I want to tackle the quilting on this one on my own yet!

I also made some great progress on Shiloh.  The paper pieced setting triangles slow things down a bit and makes for a ton of scrap fabric and wasted paper ... but boy do those points come together beautifully!

Since my little one decided on an early bedtime tonight, I'm hoping to finish at least four more Shiloh blocks ... that is if I don't get distracted by my latest Nook purchase!

I cannot put this book down!  I've flown through the almost 600 pages in less than a week and I'm so thankful that the sequel was released last month - I'll probably be picking that up tonight!  If you're looking for a fantastic summer read, especially for one with a little bit of fantasy, lots of history & research, a bibliophile, a love story, and fantastic wine ... all tied together by a superb author ... pick this book up now!

In the meantime, don't forget to stop by Design Wall Monday @ Patchwork Times.  Happy Sewing!

Check out the 'ole design wall!

Happy Design Wall Monday!  Check mine out!

That can mean only one thing!  Robot Roulette is actually finished!!

Ok, technically, I still have to stitch the binding down, but this baby has left the wall! I tried to be as random with the four robot prints as possible and overall, I'm please with the way that it turned out!  There were some inadvertent color clusters, but nothing that stands out too much ... at least if you were viewing it from the back of a galloping horse!

My inspiration came from Jennifer @ Sugar Stitches, but I used my pinwheel template from Fig Tree & Co's "Salt Water Taffy" quilt.  I love, love, love the pinwheel effect and the resulting circles they create.  Once the binding is all in place, it's off to it's new home with Aiden's newest little cousin!

This afternoon, I'm playing with ...

This line is a first for me - Reproduction fabric isn't usually my cup of tea, but I love the colors and the prints in this line.  I'm excited to step out of my little box with a new project for fall!  We'll see what happens.

{almost} instant gratification!

While searching for a crochet hook to finish up the border on my last crochet-y project, I came across a box containing my first forays into paper piecing!  I didn't have enough fabric to make more than a couple of squares ... so they were never destined to be a finished project ...

{available here}
... but the little blossoms turned out to be the perfect size for these cute little applique mug rugs! I was able to whip these two up in practically no time at all!  Love those instant gratification projects!

Happy Summer!

The month of June always flies by for us - I think it's our busiest month of the year, besides December - so it really isn't a surprise that my poor sewing machine is feeling a little neglected lately.

I did manage to finally finish sewing the binding on August's table runner, "Summer Breeze."

Summer in the Sacramento area is always hot, but every once in a while we get this beautifully cooling delta breeze that blows in the gloaming, setting the perfect setting for an evening walk to the park for a little kite flying.

August's runner uses just 15 charm squares and some white yardage, so it's a great stash buster!

I made my sample using some squares from my very last Verna charm pack, so I don't have any kits to share this month, but Kate Spain's newest line, Cuzco, would be just as lovely to use ...

The pattern is now here and here.

Baby Season!

Our family has two little bundles of joy that should be arriving in the next couple of weeks, which means two little quilts are in the works!

"Robot Roulette" is currently on the design wall.  It had been sidelined for a little while, but now all of the blocks are cut and just need a little bit of assembly!

Quilt #2, name TBD, is actually only missing the binding.  Luckily, Spain {my hubby's people} and Croatia {my people} played each other in the EuroCup this morning, so hubby and I have plans to watch them face off tonight, which will provide the perfect opportunity to finish things. :)

Stuck!

I'm making great progress on my AYOS project for May ... or at least I was until I finished my 8th block this morning.  I've made four pairs of matching blocks ... and I love how they turned out!

But, I can't figure out for the life of me how I want to finish the center!  Any suggestions??  Right now I'm leaning towards maybe white and dark brown ...

I've decided to deviate from the pattern with my sashing ... so hopefully by the time I've finished I'll find some inspiration for the center!

Happy Monday!

I can't believe it, but I have two finished projects to share today - I managed to log 6.5 yards as busted!

I just barely finished the quilting and binding on my AYOS project for April.  This month's pattern was Summer Day.  My version is a slightly smaller than the original pattern, but I was using scraps leftover from my 2011 Lemon Taffy quilt, and I had just enough fabric left to manage a 6x6 grid.

All of the fabric, including the binding, came from a huge Black Friday purchase from Connecting Threads.  It's difficult to tell in this lighting, but the Flying Geese borders are a pretty yellow rose sprig print that ties everything together nicely.

I opted for simple zig-zag quilting over the borders, partially because I wanted a minimalist, almost hand-quilted look ... and partially because I plain 'ole ran out of time to do anything more elaborate.

Be sure to stop by Pink Pincushion and a Quilting Life on Tuesday to see the full parade of finishes.  With all of this month's fabric purchases, I can't wait to find out what May's project will be!!

My other finish of the week was my Southern Belle Wallhanging:

Now, I know that I bragged a couple of weeks ago that she was all finished, but technically I still had all the threads to bury on the back ... which is now done.  And, I'm very, very happy to introduce:

Southern Belle - a wallhanging pattern by Poplun Designs, now available for purchase in my etsy shop.

Here's all the stats:

Skill Level:                   Intermediate

Wallhanging Finished Size:                             40” x 40”

Wallhanging Fabric Requirements:
Red & Brown print (A):           1 Fat Quarter
Brown Swirl print (B): 1 Fat Quarter
Brown Diamond print (C): 1 Fat Quarter
Tan Swirl print (D): 1 Fat Quarter
Tan Floral print (E): 1 Fat Quarter
Red Solid fabric (F): ½ yard
Cream background print: 1 ¼ yard
 Batting & Backing: 45” x 45” each

Supplies:
Rotary Cutter, Square Rotary Ruler (with diagonals marked), and Cutting Mat
Fabric pencil or water-soluble fabric marker
Iron, Ironing Board, and Starch (if desired)

I was really inspired by all of the Carpenter Stars I had been seeing in blogland lately, but I really liked the idea of incorporating them into a larger, overall pattern, rather than just showcasing them as separate blocks.  When the quilt top came together, it really reminded me of Southern Belles, swishing around in their giant hoop skirts.  I'm so happy that she's finally finished and that I can share her with you!

Thanks for stopping by!

Happy Monday!

Just wanted to pop by and share a quick photo of my Monday morning design wall:

My Robot-Roulette was the only quilt that saw any action recently since we were busy celebrating my hubby's birthday over the weekend.  We have quite the busy schedule for the next couples of weeks ... so I might have to change the name of my blog to "The Naptime Quilter."  Luckily, Aiden seems to be slowly coming out of his four month sleep regression phase, and has been taking some hefty naps lately, so fingers crossed!!

This week I'm going {to try} to link up with these sites.  Please drop by to check out all the fun projects happening in blog-land this week!

Happy Sewing!

She's {finally} finished!

Thank you so much for all of the Southern Belle love over the last few weeks!  I'm happy to say that she's FINALLY finished - just have to finish up the binding tonight after bedtime!  Have you ever had one of those projects that you feel like you're constantly working on ... but not getting anywhere?  That is totally how this quilt has been!  I love it to pieces, though, and am so very happy with the finished project!!!

The thing that I think I love most about this quilt is how organically the pattern evolved ... but more on that in another post ...

I'm in the process of checking over my pattern and my construction notes, but I'm hoping to have the pattern in my etsy shop any day now ... provided that the weather cooperates a little more so that I can take some outdoor pictures.  We've had way too many stormy days in a row now!!  As a special thank you for all the cheerleading, if you're interested in purchasing the pattern, please email me at poplun{at}gmail{dot}com, and I'll send you a code for a 50% off discount for the pattern!

This week, I'm linking up with the following sites.  Please be sure to swing by to see all the creative peeps out there!

Design Wall Monday

First of all, thank you so much to all of you who weighed in on my hexagon dilemma last week.  Everyone had the same opinion - use the hexagons, not the diamonds, to connect the paper piecing blocks!  I think this was the way I was leaning, but all the votes helped to solidify the decision!  I have a gazillion more blocks to piece, but here's a sneak peek at three of them, connected with the hexagons

Well, thanks to some beautiful weather over the weekend, I really don't have much else to share today.  I did finally manage to get the outer borders on my Southern Belle quilt:

The borders aren't as wonky as they look - the upper right corner is just pinned a little too aggressively to my design board.  I'm working on some very clean, basic straight line quilting around the carpenter stars and the red stars ...

... and I'm about 1/3 of the way through.  Aiden is taking his best nap in weeks right now, so we'll see how much further I can get today.  If he keeps napping this well, I should have the binding finished and the pattern listed in my Etsy shop next week!

This week, I'm linking up with Design Wall Mondays by Judy at Patchwork Times.  Be sure to stop by and look at all the great projects this week!

Opinion Needed!!

Well, despite the gorgeous weather we're having today and having my hubby home for a three day weekend, I managed to make some progress on my Southern Belle quilt!

I just have a few borders to add and I need to tweak the instructions a bit, but the pattern should {hopefully} be ready in a few weeks.  I only bought enough fabric to make a wallhanging, but as I'm looking at the photo, I'm starting to see a gorgeous bedspread.  Might have to make another version soon!  I'm linking up with Patchwork Times' Design Wall Monday, Quilt Story's Fabric Tuesday and Freshly Pieced's WIP Wednesday.  Be sure to visit and check out all the great WIPS!

I've spent most of my sewing time working on my English Paper Piecing - I'm loving how easily these Jewel Stars are going together, and California Girl is such a beautiful line!!!  Now that I have about ten blocks assembled though, I find myself with a dilemma: how should these be assembled?

I'm planning on using my favorite white polka dot fabric as the connecting fabric, but I can't decide whether to put the blocks together using small diamonds, or large hexagons!  Since I'm planning this as a summery throw blanket, right now I'm leaning towards using the larger hexies.  The small diamonds almost seem like they'd be better suited for a smaller project, like a wallhanging or tablerunner.  What do you think???

Design Wall Monday!

Happy Monday!  Hoping you all had a nice weekend.  Hubby, little man, and I enjoyed a weekend full of wonderful friends, awesome wine, and great food!

On Saturday, we hit the Placer Wine trail to try some new-to-us wineries.

We've always been big fans of the Amador and Fair Play wineries, but the last few times we've visited, it has seemed like the area was slowly being infiltrated with more commercialized wineries, and that the tasting rooms were really overcrowded with drunk chicks (who probably turned 21 about five minutes ago) on their bachelorette parties, pretending to enjoy wine, but really just looking for a quick way to get tossed for free.  While I'm by no means a wine snob or sommolier, I do know a little bit about wine and really enjoy getting to know more about each vintner's history and how they like to make their wine.

To avoid the weekender crowds this weekend however, we met up with our best friends and hit the backroads of Placer County.  First stop was Wise Villa Winery ...

...followed by Mt. Vernon ...

and finally Fortezza!

The wines at all three places were very good and we came home with a nice variety of bottles to enjoy after our little guy's bedtime!

The highlight of the day, however, was dinner at La Fornaretta in Newcastle, CA.  Oh my lord, the food was phenomenal!  If you live within a 2 hour radius, you have to try this restaurant!  Believe me, it's worth the drive!!  The restaurant is small and rustic, but is so completely welcoming.  The owner greets all the diners at the door and spends the evening wandering through the dining room making conversation with those that desire to.  He kept coming over to our table to coo at Aiden and tell us what a good baby we had!

Every single person at our table was raving about how good the food was!  I tried the Penne alla Norma, which was eggplant in a superb Sicilian-style tomato sauce over penne and smothered with fresh ricotta.  I couldn't even tell you what the rest of the party had since I was so enthralled with my own plate.  The only thing that looked better than my pasta was the amazing pizzas that kept passing by the table.  We're already planning to go back next weekend to try them!  So fantastic!!

*     *     *     *     *

With all the adventuring this weekend, though, I never even set foot in my sewing room.  I'm hoping to finish up some projects that have been just sitting around for awhile so that I can start fresh with some ideas that have been brewing lately.

First on the list of {planned} finishes for the week is the checkerboard quilt made from the leftover scraps of my niece's birthday dress.

I'm hoping to have the top finished by tomorrow so that I don't have to feel quite as guilty about running out on Wednesday to get a few more coordinating prints for a couple of ideas I've had bouncing around in my head.

If you're like me and need some inspiration to get moving this morning, pop on over to Patchwork Times to see what's on our fellow quilters' design boards today!
