She doesn't look like she'd have a lot of vertical (after all, she only measures about 20 inches tall)...

When our gardener comes, the protective shepherd in her goes a little nuts. We usually put Rita in our bedroom, and shut the blinds in the hopes she'll let the guy do his job unharassed. But, unless one of us sits with her and tries to keep her calm, she goes to the window and sproings up and down, barking like mad.
We wouldn't believe how how she can jump if we didn't have the nose-marks to prove it.
It's a little hard to see, but the top of that nose smudge (or "pupkus" as we call it) is at 57 inches. That's almost 3 times her height. That's like me jumping 18 feet into the air. (I tried, and I made it about 6 inches...)
Here she is putting her sproinging skills to good use, trying to see what all is in the box of treats we just ordered.

We humans aren't very athletic when compared to our animal friends :-) I can't outrun the three inch legs of a corgi! An adult man probably could for a short while, but the dogs can hold a full-on sprint for much longer!

ReplyDeleteRoxy springs like that, and she is way tiny. She has lost some of her spring in her old age, but she still does pretty good.
ReplyDeleteThat's pretty high jumping. Maybe you should try some frisbee agility. Indy used to be a good jumper, but the old girl ain't what she used to be (same is true for me).

I'm afraid the best human athletes can't come close to the abilities of our ordinary little dogs. Usain Bolt is the fast human alive, but a small Greyhound can leave him in the dust. I guess we should be glad that they usually use their powers for good and not evil.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great jumper! Kelly is a great jumper too, I think she's doing great for an 11 yr old gal. One time she jumped right over a counter at the groomer to get to us!

ReplyDeleteWhen Hobie was younger, he used to jump all four paws off the kitchen and look me straight in the eye (I'm 5 feet tall) whenever I was preparing food. LOL! When I saw the "duck feet" picture of Rita, it reminded me of what Hobie used to do... I had forgotten all about that! She is so cute, have I told ya that lately? :)
ReplyDeleteWow, Rita really can jump! I wondered if it could be a beagle thing....our little beagle Cricket can also jump very high. However, I don't think I've ever seen her beagle brother jump, so I don't know.

ReplyDeleteI won a copy of your book from Flea and got it just in time for vacation. However the weather was so wonderful that I didn't open any of the books I brought. lol But winter is coming so I usually have more time to read.

ReplyDeleteYou sure can jump buddy!! :) I get the whole gardener thing, your house sounds just like ours, Mum and I have to hang out in the closet cos I go so nuts, and that's even with the blinds closed! They bring very scary machines!

Great interviews with Dorri! Read both of them while I was there. Awkward silences and hugging weirdness... I SO hear ya... I try to avoid both, if possible ;).
