U2 2017-06-16 Cardinal Stadium Louisville, KY

U2
2017.06.16, Cardinal Stadium
Louisville, Kentucky

Zoom H1 - AT831 Cardoid Mics WAV 24/48 - Tracksplitting & Fading w/ Audacity - FLAC.

Recording # 294

So, a disclaimer from someone who has never given much thought to ever seeing U2 or listening to any of their records.
1) I have never heard a  U2 record in it's entirety (before this show) other than Joshua Tree (and that was in preparation for this show)
2) I have never taped a show in a stadium (from U2's "red zone" no less) and
3) after seeing them live, I can finally understand why this band is so loved, be it being overwhelmed w/ Bono's positivity, The Edge's guitar textures, Clayton's smooth bass, or Mullen's subtle and under appreciated drumming.\
If you want a show recorded from a bar by Bolt Thrower, Converge, or Neurosis, I am your guy.  I love recording raw, loud, visceral. melt-your-fucking face metal.  Undoubtedly, those show are easier to record, because you can plant yourself in front of the speaker at 10 feet and let the capture do the work for you.  It is so loud that any fan screaming is usually drowned out by the sheer volume of the sound.  This was a lot harder to judge. \
Anyway, my friend from work loves U2.  Like,
I loves
U2.  He had a friend who was able to get tickets in the "red zone" and since we had always wanted to see a concert together I went (not knowing just how fucking long the lines were to park and to leave afterwards).  So, anyway, I suddenly found myself overwhelmed by being at the center of this huge stadium 20 feet from the "B" stage. Because of the generosity of my friend (Thanks Tony!) and his friend (Thanks Steve!), I thought the least I could do was record the show to show my gratitude for the chance to see a legendary band that close.
\
About the recording.  I have only heard some samples from this tour and there are couple things I'd like to mention before you download.
1)  It doesn't sound distant.  It sounds like you are really close to the band.
2)  Some of Bono's vocals are a little hot.  I give this up to setting the recording level higher than I would in a bar, club, arena, or amphitheater, due to the distance I was from the speakers and my lack of experience with stadium sound.
3)   The bass, guitar, and drums are nice and clear.
4)  There is notable audience chatter between songs and during quieter songs. (Why can't people stop talking during quiet parts and just appreciate the band?!)5)  People do sing around me on some parts.  I don't know if that is just from being surrounded by hardcore fans or if this a universal phenomenon for U2.  Happens about 5% of the listening time.

So, anyway,  I would recommend it.  A- recording most of the time with the 5 above caveats.  (Not including the first song, where everyone is loud as fuck).  But once again that is subjective.  If you aren't happy with it after you download, please be tactful with your criticism.  I am not posting mp3 snippets.

One last thing.  I know this sounds cheesy but I want to thank all the hardcore U2 fans who are responsible for this band's longevity.  They wouldn't have been touring 38-39 years later for me to witness them for the first time without you.

After the U2 show at Levis Stadium I wissed I was going to see another
Joshua Tree show so when they announced U2 and Beck at Qualcomm Stadium in
San Diego I knew I needed to go.  Getting a GA ticket was a requirement so
I posted on the U2 torrent site my need for a code and got a message from
u2lemonman who generously offered a code for 2 seats.  I got the tickets
and offered the second one to my taping brother Scooter123 and plans made.
Day of show I left my house in the SF Bay Area at 5:20AM, drove to LA and
met Scooter123 and a friend of his.  Loaded up their car and drove down to
San Diego.  We got to our cheap motel at 3:15 and checked in with my friend
Melanie who was at the venue providing intel on security.  There was lots
of conflicting info on what was and wasn't allowed in which was important
on our approach to getting gear in.  We got in and parked.  Met some other
friends and went to the GA entry gate.  Since entry was using a credit card
both of us needed to succeed or neither of us would. We walked up to the
entry and were directed to a particular line where we walked in without any
back check, wanding or patdown.  It must have been Jedi Mind Tricks.  We are
not the droids you are looking for.

Once in we got set up and found our spot dead center and a bit to the right
of the "b" stage.  It is crowded but not uncomfortable as Beck starts.  This
is not an artist I am familiar with but I found some songs to be very good.
The crowd was good until this jackass pushes between Scooter123 and me and
then parks himself right in front of me where there is no room.  He then
pushes back on me to create space, turns around and starts yelling at me that
I can't reserve space.  Somehow he got his 35mm camera in and starts taking
pictures of the screens.  I am sure you can hear the shutter clicks.  I can
only hope he sees this on a torrent site so he can see he is an idiot.  The
highlight of the Beck set was the band intros where they played snippets of a
variety of songs.  Between sets both Scooter 123 and I sat down to hold space
and save our old legs.  Many of the people around us gave us a hard time but
whatever.  We finally stood up and the break lasted forever.

U2 finally comes on as the band comes out to the "b" stage to start Sunday
Bloody Sunday.  I am looking forward to Larry Mullen Jr as everyone around me
is looking left towards Bono and the rest of the band.  The crowd is going crazy
through all of the but the loudest people are behind me.  I was very glad to be
running the MK41 hypercardiod mics as the crowd noise isn't too bad.  After the
start U2 digs into Joshua Tree which was my favorite U2 album.  I While some
people found the visuals distracting I really enjoyed them.  I have driven the
road they show in the Streets video on my way to and from my property in Joshua
Tree.  There were two other visuals that I am pretty certain I recognized.  For
the most part the crowd was great.  There was a guy behind me who was there with
his wife and teenage daughters that was really into it.  At the end of the set
you can hear him a bit but not too bad.  By the end of the set my back and legs
were feeling the effects of the long day.  The encore seemed longer than the last
time and enjoyed every second of it.  When they ended the show with Ultraviolet
and One I was done.  Made it out to the car and met everyone.  It took almost an
hour and a half to get to the hotel and we all passed out.  We woke up and went
to breakfast at the same place Melanie and Bob were staying so they met us for
breakfast.  I finally said we got to go since I had a long drive home.  Finally
made it back as the sun set and here is the show, the next morning.

Notes: Excellent show for this casual fan. Perfect weather for starters. Followed by brilliant music with a beautiful visual presentation. The PA audio quality was fantastic as well. No video to share here. I periscoped the entire show and had about 350 viewers at one point but didn't save the video to my phone, which was a rookie mistake. Traffic nightmares getting in and out? Who cares. Well worth it.

*Tour Debut

U2 are:

Bono - Vocals
The Edge - Guitars, Piano, Backing Vocals
Adam Clayton - Bass
Larry Mullen - Drums

The band / performance:

The four Northside Dubliners make their return to the recently refurbished Forum for the fifth and final night
of their Los Angeles residency (sixth if you include their KROQ promotional club show, so aptly recorded by JEMS).
The band performed for nearly 2 1/2 hours to a capacity crowd. On the surface, it may appear strange that the set
was dominated by "Songs of Innocence" (nine in total!); an album that the band "couldn't giveaway" nine months ago.
However, the album has a natural ebb and flow to it and has the added benefit of telling a narrative of the band's
early formative years. After years of over the top stage productions with spaceships and claws, I commend them on
their decision to return to arenas and to scale the production back. The stage design allows nearly everyone in the
audience a closer view of the band at some point in the performance. I was located directly above the "e" stage which
afforded me a bird's eye view for the majority of the second half of the show. Unfortunately, I was not able to see
the massive two storey monolithic LED screen that was lowered across the center catwalk. The band would perform inside
the screen at different intervals during the night. The band was tight and well-rehearsed and Bono's voice was in fine
form. No doubt aided by the band's "two nights on - two nights off" itenerary. After all is said and done, the band
will make 70+ stops across 20 cities around the world over the next seven months. The set saw the tour debut of
"Volcano" and "Ordinary Love". The performance overall seemed a bit subdued. The band is clearly still mourning the
loss of their fallen comrade, Dennis Sheehan. Still it was nearly flawless. The two exceptions were a problem with the
"e stage" piano at the beginning of "Every Breaking Wave" in which The Edge was forced to retreat to the main stage.
During that time Bono brought up a 70's-era Elvis impersanator from the audience, who regailed the audience with a verse
of "Can't Help Falling In Love". Also, one of his guitar effects didn't trigger during one of the WTSHNN verses. All in
all it was a great show!

The recording:

It's a fairly solid pull from the fifth row of The Forum's proverbial "cheap seats" (Upper Section). This section used
to be called "The Collonade" when the Showtime Lakers and Gretsky-era Kings played here. The 60m that the MSG Group spent
in 2013 saw upgraded seats that didn't afford any extra legroom as they didn't change the configuration of the interior
bowl. Still, even these nosebleed seats afford a much better view than those at Staples Center, which are situated atop
three storeys of suites. Parking here is still a mad dog's breakfast , but that's a whole other story (YIKES!) This
section has the added benefit of having the most direct path to the ceiling stacks that are configured in a large ellipse
above the runway stage. I was situated directly in front of a small projection screen with speakers on either side.
Unfortunately, I had no direct "line of sight" to any single speaker. Still, the people directly in front of me were
situated in a Box section 2 feet below me and they were very quiet. There is very little chatter on the recording. That
being said, I did mildly attenuate a bit of clapping. Also, one dude behind me screams out "Gloria" between songs on 3
occasions. I did expand the frequency response a tad and tried to define the bass a bit more in order to reduce the "boom
in the room" sound. Still, it sounds pretty decent for an arena pull. I'll let you be the judge. On a final note, the
intermission portion was parsed as it contains a prerecording of Johnny Cash's "The Wanderer" in its entirety.

Personal highlights:

Tour (live?) debut of "Volcano". It's still a little rough aroung the edges but Adam's bass playing makes up for the lack of
polish. "City Of Blinding Lights". The band just killed it on this song! The recording of this sounds pretty distant though.
Wish we could have gotten "Bad", "40" or "A Kind of  Homecoming". Maybe time to trade out "Pride", "Bullet" or "Streets";
blasmephy to be sure. "Desire" and "Still" did get the night off, though.

Enjoy,

Comments:

The third of five nights in Chicago, and the best performance so far with a bunch of oddities in the set. "Gloria" makes its first appearance in the set since nearly ten years ago at the end of the "Vertigo" tour (12/14/05), the second performance of "Lucifer's Hands" (the first being in Montreal on 6/13), and only the second performance of "All I Want Is You" on the current tour (the first in L.A. 5/31).  Bono was clearly inspired by the Gay Pride parade which took place in Chicago earlier in the day, and there were multiple references to the celebration of gay rights and the power of love.  Inspiring show.  Bono references that several band members' sons (I think Bono's, Edge's, and Larry's) were all in attendance tonight, as well as Bono's wife.

In terms of recording quality, tonight was one of those rare nights where everything came together.  I was in a direct line to one of the overhead speaker stacks, and the audience members in my immediate vicinity were pretty quiet.  There's some chatter during the quiet parts, but none that I could hear intruding on the music.  I'm very happy with this recording.

Anyone who would like to remaster this recording and repost it is welcome to do so; in the info file, please document the original source and note what you did to the original recording. s.

Traffic from Orlando to Tampa on I-4 was awful on the way to the concert. A 1.5 hour trip took about 3 hours. Not good. It also was raining for most, if not all, of the way over. I also heard a terrible story about another taper who got busted and his gear confiscated at the Miami show a couple of days earlier. All of this wasn’t making for good karma in the moments before the show started. But, an enormous rainbow appeared as the rain stopped just before show time. I got my gear in no problem, and all was well. Another amazing show by U2, perhaps better than in Miami where Bono seemed a bit taken aback by the heat and humidity. This is a different recording than Kevdogg’s. His was from section 207. I was in the general admission floor area at the front of the mixing desk area. Let me know what you think of the quality. And as always, trade freely and never sell.

For the 2nd night I had seats on the side which I normally dislike but with the
U2 sound system it was an improvement. After 3 1/2 hours of sleep and a long day
at a work conference I was tired.  Arena was 41 miles away and was supposed to
meet a fellow taper who had my ticket between 7 and 7:30.  Goal was to arrive early
enough to eat and get set up by 6:30.  Traffic was hell and finally resorted to
side streets through San Jose. After 2 hours in the car dinner was obviously not
going to happen so stopped for french fries and the use of the bathroom.  I got to
arena at 7 and got a text my friend was stuck in traffic.  He arrived at 7:30 and
rushed in to set up.  Show started and both sound was improved and band was hotter.
After Beautiful Day Bono changed things up and they went into a great version of Bad.
Had to be the highlight of the show.  During the encore Bono pulled a kid up on stage
which was cool.  All in all a nice recording of a fun U2 show.

Just the basic taper requests here and please no vitriol:

Recorded on the floor, about 10 people from the outer stage ramp on edge's side, just to left of center stage. Should have been Mid mic Gain, but looking at my recorder now, could have been Low mic gain, Rec level was 73. My previous recordings are too high and distorted, this one is much nicer to listen to. I listened with headphones and I think it sound great. First show, so I was really there to enjoy it so there is some talking in between songs, but the none during. Do with it what you will, I'm just sharing. Enjoy.

Notes:
This is the last show of the first US leg of the Joshua Tree Tour. Took the day trip with a few friends for the show. It was a wonderful evening. Sat at a bar, conversed, made some new friends. Got to the show a little late, didn’t really care. It was such a perfect night for a concert. The weather was amazing and didn’t really care what came out of the tape tonight. We were still able to get up decently close to the left-middle stack on the floor. Thanks for M and DC giving me the pointers on this! U2 did not disappoint, once again. I didn’t look at the setlist before I went to this and I was surprised for them to not fool around and just get right into some bangers of tracks. Was blown away by the size of the stage and the visuals were solid. Tape came out pretty decent too.

All in all, it was a great day with some of my best friends to share the experience with. Was still buzzing from the energy at the show, I decided to mix and track the show to post at 5am. Ha! Enjoy if you grab it.

Recording/Transfer Notes:

I had previously transfered this recording a few years ago.
I had thought my copy ended with Track 14, "Father..." being cut off.
But just noticed that my tape had the complete track on the flip side.
So if I traded this show to you with that track cut off, than this is
a upgrade. sorry about that.
Otherwise, not much to say about this recording. Pretty poor sound wise.
Had to make a few edits to cut out dead air and to join the tape flip
before the last track. No music lost at all. Normalized & faded in and out.
No processing was done whatsoever. Upgrades welcome!
