Todd released the Nearly Human album around the time of this show. His tour to promote this album was the closest thing to a soul revue, or possibly a Vegas act, as he'd ever get. It was a few years after Utopia ended, and a bit before he'd try on TR-i and flirt with hip hop. Soul and Vegas aside, there was nothing cheesy about this at all. The material was great and the live performances were energetic and a lot of fun for those of us who might've gone back to the days of the Moogy Klingman Utopia and followed along through it all with Todd (and probably kept right on doing that!).
This is a terrific recording, and I honestly can't recall who I got it from in a long ago cd-r trade. Many thanks to them, whoever they were. Another show from this tour, in San Francisco, was just shared, and there's a show from NYC at the Ritz (where I saw the tour) that's been running here for ages. The set here is slightly different from those 2 in that there's no Lost Horizon, Marvin Gaye medley, Mated, or Love in Action. Here, we have Tiny Demons, Cliche, much of Can We Still Be Friends (before it cuts out), and a lengthy I Love My Life. I can't help but wonder if the medley and anything else might've been lost at the point of the cut here during CWSBF, so if anyone out there has a more complete version of this, please do share it.
It all sounds beautiful, as the samples will show. I did use Audacity to pinpoint song starts a little better in some places, and to trim about 4 minutes total of crowd noise waiting after Hawking and during the wait for an encore. Light fades were applied to improve those transitions, and a Mastering tool was lightly applied to add a bit more depth to the recording. As for the credits above, most of the players also sang backgrounds too, so there's a very "big" vocal sound onstage. Workman, Tagg, and Urbano were all from Bourgeois Tagg, and Vince Welnick was in the Tubes (and eventually the Grateful Dead). Thanks again to whoever made this available to me, and to whoever got the recording and passed it on to the rest of us.

Todd Rundgren 1978-05-23 The Roxy Los Angeles, CA(FM)

Todd and the Hello People
The Roxy
May 23rd, 1978

source: FM > ? > CDR > EAC > FLAC

i got this one from frank bubnick of trconnection.  his words from that site:

"5/23/78 - Todd and the Hello People - The Roxy...

First nationwide simulcast of a concert transmitted via microwave.  This show is the Roxy portion of the Back to the Bars (BTTB) album, unedited.  Classic show with Todd pouring his heart out, he's really hitting his stride. Set list: Real Man, It Wouldn't..., Love of the Common Man, Lady Face (rare - only performed live), Love In Action, Never Neverland, You Cried Wolf (with Wolfman Jack), Range War (with Spencer Davis), Bread, Can We Still Be Friends, Black Maria, Don't You Ever Learn, Sometimes I Don't Know What To Fell (with Hall & Oates), Black and White (GREAT version), A Dream Goes On Forever, I'm So Proud Medley, Eastern Intrigue and Initiation (with Kasim Sultan), Couldn't I  Just Tell You.  Also includes the whole encore which was totally cut out of BTTB - Hello It's Me (which feature Stevie Nicks singing harmony with Todd which was totally cut from BTTB), Hang On Sloopy, She's Gone, and Just One Victory.  It's cool to hear wghat happens after Todd says "It's sing along night for the Woodstock generation" at the end of BTTB.  Excellent quality.  This is the best quality I've heard of this show and was made from a master cassette from FM.  Sound quality is fairly clear and features great bass punch, highs are a bit rolled-off but seem to improve as the show moves along.  J Hananvan CD."

also included are the wonderful acapella station id's offered by the village people making this a true gem.  a big thanks to mr. bubnick for sending this to me!!

Notes:
Really outstanding recording of what I can only say is a bizarre show.  This is basically
Rundgren goes dance/techno/disco.  Todd plays electric guitar, but he's backed only by a
DJ and two female backing singers.  Still, Farve4 got an amazing recording, which requried
almost no editing at all.  Some mild EQ was used to remove a small peak and the overall
volume was adjusted.

Feel free to trade this recording in the existing FLAC file format (BUT PLEASE INCLUDE
THIS INFO FILE WITH ALL COPIES).  Do not under any circumstances re-post this recording
in any lossy format, or offer it for sale in any context.

Notes on the show:

This was the first show featuring Roger Powell. It's an audience recording, but was remastered beautifully. The sound is rich, full, simply outstanding.
This show comes from the incredible archive of Frank Bubnick, from whom I acquired many, many Todd shows. He was always a great guy, and my eternal thanks go to him for all the work he put into leaving the best possible sounds of Todd shows. Thanks, Frank. If anybody wants to get in touch with Frank, please go to the following site:
http://bubnick.trconnection.com. You WON'T be disappointed!
According to Frank's notes, he took the songs from the original masters. They were remastered by Paul Russo. Of course, if anybody has a better version of this show (I seriously doubt it, though), I'd love
to hear it. So, please upload it. AND: please, support this and all other artists by buying their official output and going to see their shows. This is what we can do to keep the music we love alive! Thanks.

Notes:

Tracking, EQ, repairs, re-master by fartherobliv (JF), January, 2014.

This is a special treat. Super rare, and in very few (if any) collector's hands until now. It is two master cassettes that I believe Frank Bubnick had been holding on to from a 70s 'snail' mail trade... Back when a 'trade' was even to be made! He gave them to me a while ago, and I've always thought these poor sounding primitive tapes could be a great audience recording, if put in the right hands to fix it up (So many classic 70s fan recordings have made at the famous Cobo Hall in Detroit). Well, my/our friend~ Joe franks (Fartherobliv) took my transfer of this recording and did just that. The mastery he performed has made this a VERY good listen. The exact date of this show is arguable but we know it took place between July 4th & July 14th (the first dates of the 1975 Tour in support of Initiation). And Willie had just replaced Kevin Ellman on drums. My tapes are scribbled with July 13, so I'm going with that

About the work Joe did, he says: "Sound is steady and mostly consistent, and listenable. Clean and nice after the EQ. HMK has some hectic sound at first 2 min then clears up (repairs noted below). The Ikon 75' as I call it (which is just the jam part slightly extended) gives us a nice deviation, HOWEVER it has none of the momentum of the previous year, and only gives us extremely short solos before stopping. I do enjoy the Side A Initiation medley especially here, it sounds as fresh as it would ever be at any time, definitely a very nice aspect of this show. The Vegas Hits Medley is missing the beginning intro, but the other tape flip has been edited out on this remastered version to keep it continuous. I'm a sucker for the Vegas Hits Medley, it's charming, and for me a highly enjoyable aspect of this show. Some of the dialogue that Todd says is hard to hear, the Freak Preamble is its own track, in case someone would want to skip that part. Freak Parade is quite awesome. TLR is missing the beginning. Then we get Mr Triscuits, which is another highlight. This show has Killer moments for sure. Thanks so much Warren, and to Frank B."

You'll ENJOY this! (-- Warren)
