Peter Gabriel 1986-11-09 Onondaga County War Memorial Auditorium, Syracuse, Ny(DAVROS047)

Hi to all

Welcome to my series of mostly uncirculated masters & very low generation shows that i recorded or received in trades in my younger days most of my masters
have not been circulated or only traded once or twice i used to trade a lot in the 70s - 80s & i have many many shows well in excess of 7,500 tapes
Of these shows about 120 - 150 are  my masters they where always on my trading list but not many got traded so i boxed them all up in the late 80s now i have
decided to go through them  & upload some of them.
I recorded many bands from Genesis – Bowie – Springsteen  - Hawkwind  - Hackett – Gabriel – Marillion plus many many others i will try & upload a least
one  show a week if not two.
To record theses shows i used a Sony portable hand held tape recorder with built in stereo mics.  I always used good quality tapes to record on mainly T.D.K.
I used to insert the tape deck in a empty coffee flask with the inside taken out of the flask to get past the security ah those where the days.
The only thing i ask is please don’t sell these recording & don’t convert to mp3 etc & if you do ( only for your own use ).  Please don’t change any of the files or
info files etc this is so that people can tell the difference between this source & other sources as many people like to compare different versions of shows.
Also please do not remaster these shows the reason for this is these days there are far to many remasters of shows. Its ok have one remaster etc, but some are
remastered that many times by different people there can be at least 10 different remasters of a show from the same source & it can get a bit tedious.

On to the show for your enjoyment Davros archives presents :-

Peter Gabriel - 1986-11-09  Onondaga County War Memorial Auditorium, Syracuse, NY ( Low Gen ) (DAVROS047)

Linage :-  Tape Trade  ( 2x C60 T.D.K-D )  - Demon tape deck - Yamaha Reciever - Phono Leads Into PC Soundcard - Nero Wave Editor -
Wav - Tracks split - Traders Little Helper - Flac8 - SBE Checked - You.

TRACKS:-

01. SAN JACINTO.
02. RED RAIN.
03. SHOCK THE MONKEY.
04. FAMILY SNAPSHOTS.
05. I HAVE THE TOUCH. ( Last 10 seconds missing )
06. NO SELF CONTROL.
07. MERCY STREET.
08. THIS IS THE PICTURE.
09. DON'T GIVE UP.
10. BIGTIME.
11. LAY YOUR HANDS ON ME.
12. SLEDGEHAMMER.
13. HERE COMES THE FLOOD.
14. IN YOUR EYES.
15. BIKO.

The quality of this recording is good to very good at times, Bigtime for some reason is only fair and sounds muffled at times.

Many many thanks to the trader for sending me a copy & for the taper taping the show.

I hope you enjoy this show please  if you want to upload it to other sites please wait a week or so as i will be uploading these shows to a couple of other torrent sites.
after it has run its course on here

As Usual Please dont convert to mp3 ( only for your own use if you do ) Please Keep all the info files md5 etc in the folder so that
other collectors know which version this is etc and  most of all DO NOT SELL.

PLEASE NOTE.

This series is from my own personal collection they are NOT SOURCED FROM ANY CDRs / OTHER TORRENT SITES ETC.
They are from recordings that i traded for between 20 - 35 years ago on audio tape as stated above they have all been boxed up for the past 20 or so years.
This is the first time any of them have been Digitally transfered and torrented. All i am doing to the recordings in nero wave editor is inproving the volume ( if low),
also equallizing the left and right channel where needed. Removing hiss etc ( If i can ).
Recordings in this series that have a generation linage are the correct linage as to what i was told when i was sent the recordings. Most of the traders i traded
with where well known traders so i have no reason to believe they are not the true Linage if i had any doubt to the linage at the time i did not write it
down on the tape so all the low generation recordings in this series have a well known and correct linage.

Please do not remaster any of theses If you wish to do remastering of this source find yourself a better quality version and remaster that.
This version is how i remembered hearing it all them years ago and how it sounded when it was recorded the way it should be heard.

Please also buy the bands offical stuff and support them etc.
Thanks to all the Artists for there great music and to all the traders for keeping live music alive.

Many thanks Doctordavros ( one day the daleks will rule ).

YOU CAN KEEP MY THINGS…
The tempest had died down. It was done.  Peter Gabriel had left Genesis in 1975 after The LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY tour and was now about to
embark upon a whole new venture as a solo artist.  Phil Collins was the new lead singer of the band Gabriel had left behind, and with the albums A TRICK
OF THE TAIL and WIND AND WUTHERING, both released in 1976, Genesis were enjoying new levels of success in album sales and concert attendances.  This
prompted mixed feelings for their ex-frontman, as he would later explain: “It felt kind of strange for me. I mean, I was very happy for the guys because I
knew they could make it without me but it’s strange how the way people feel about you can change so fast. When I was with Genesis, just because of
the costumes and the stage shows, people assumed that I ‘was’ Genesis, that I was doing everything, which was a faulty vision that I constantly fought
to dispel. But when I had left and the band was reaching new heights, people started to assume that I had done nothing, which was a bit ego-bruising,
to say the least !”…
With that in mind, Peter Gabriel now had to prove that he could stand alone and create his own musical world.  No easy task after such an incredible
run with as great a band as Genesis was then, but Gabriel was never a man to shy away from a challenge From the very start, he knew that he had to
be as different from Genesis as possible, Both musically and visually - no more long and syncopated musical suites, no more batwings and flower masks.
The last months of 1975 and the first half of 1976 were spent at his home in England, resting with his family and slowly writing new material on the piano.
Having dug deep into his own musical background, he created a very special collection of songs, each of which had a distinct personality of its own,
and he set about recording his first solo album.  In an effort to get away from the archetypal ‘English’ rock sound, Gabriel sought the help of American
producer Bob Ezrin, well known for his work with Alice Cooper and Kiss.  Most of the resulting album was recorded at Soundstage studio in Toronto,
Canada. Ezrin’s involvement in the project undoubtedly helped bring forth the raw sound that Gabriel was looking for, but it was the choice of musicians
in his new recording band that would ultimately make this first solo album such a departure from Gabriel’s previous recorded work.
Steve Hunter’s harsh guitar licks and Allan Schwartzberg’s heavy drums were as far removed from the Hackett-Collins combination as could possibly be
imagined, while Larry Fast’s discrete synthesizer work couldn’t be further away from Tony Banks’ huge presence on the keyboards. Add Tony Levin, an
amazing bass player with a unique style of his own, and the brilliant ex-King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp (who would insist on staying in the shadows,
both on the album and the ensuing tour when he was referred to only as ‘Dusty Rhodes’), and you have all the elements needed to create an album as
different from Genesis and progressive rock in general as a fly is from a windshield !  To further accentuate the contrast, Gabriel would also bring in
orchestral arrangements for one of the songs, another first for the ex-Genesis angel.  One could still hear vague musical remnants of Peter’s days with
Genesis in songs like “Moribund The Burgermeister” and “Down The Dolce Vita”, but for the most part, this first solo effort was very fresh in its overall
approach and it came as a delightful surprise to Peter Gabriel fans the world over.  The advertising campaign which accompanied the release of the
album in February 1977 advised listeners to ‘Expect The Unexpected’.  Wise words indeed.
With the album and first single “Solsbury Hill” achieving deserved success, March 1977 saw Gabriel taking his new music out on the road.  Electing to
avoid using costumes and elaborate stage choreography, Gabriel’s voice, body and music would now be the only weapons he would use to try and
conquer a whole new audience.  The set list consisted of the new album in its entirety, along with early versions of new songs that would later appear on
his second album, and even a few covers.  By the time the tour reached the UK, the following month, “Why Don’t We?” had been dropped from the set,
never to reappear live or in a recorded version.
Was the surprisingly heavy interpretation of Genesis’ “Back In NYC” as an encore a concession to his older fans ?  Only Peter could tell us but after playing
“The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway” on the 1978-79 tour for his second album, no more Genesis song would ever be included in the set list of a Peter
Gabriel show.  The man was intent on making it on his own !  And it all began with the 1977 tour for his first album, from which we proudly bring you this
exceptional recording of what was only Gabriel’s sixth ever solo performance.  We most certainly hope that you are going to enjoy it as much as we do.

Notes from the Re-Master
This recording comes to us as a CD copy of the master pre-FM reels. The show was initially broadcast in the Cleveland area which has lead to a
number of versions of the recording being available to the public. But this is the first time, to our knowledge; this pre-FM source has been available.
Despite its Pre-FM status there was still quite a bit of noise in this recording. Multiple techniques of noise reduction were tried but eventually an
inversion-subtraction method was found to be most effective. This noise cancellation technique was variably applied throughout the show as needed to
reduce the perceived noise. Manual removal of pops and clicks was necessary as was selective removal of an occasional buzz.
Tonality also needed a bit of adjustment. The original source was quite deficient in the bass and sub-bass components. Those were boosted. There
were sections with prominent bass drum where even further bass enhancements were needed. Other sections were a little excessive in the treble range.
Rather than a global treble reduction, a dynamic de-esser in the high treble range seemed most effective. This technique smoothed both the excessive
sounding “SS” when sung and the occasional piercing character of the high toned instruments.
Track gaps were found and removed. Some audience noise was reduced in volume but not was cut in length. The discs were re-balanced
because the interview was added at the end of the show. This required a mix-pasting of the original cut in the show but fortunately, no patch was
necessary as the cut occurred during applause. Finally, a small amount of echo was added to enhance the sound. Since this was a soundboard
recording the presence was a bit dry and the sound character of a truly live performance was lacking. Adding a bit of echo helped to correct this
problem.
The Interview section had quite a bit of noise that needed reduction. Two different techniques were used to accomplish this. The tonality also
needed adjustment. Bass was reduced and treble/midrange was enhanced to better understand the dialogue. Frequent pops and clicks occurred and
were manually removed. Finally, the Right channel was suppressed compared to the left and so the two channels were re-balanced.

Nice FM from the South-American leg of the Secret World tour. NO COMMENTS FROM THE RADIO SPEAKER!!!

As Peter mentions in an interview, the South American gigs are not actual Secret World shows due to the cost of bringing the stage set along.

Interesting because Wallflower is played during the encore (only performance of the song on the tour) with guest-band Inti-Illimani, who also guest on Biko.

Across the River is among the highlights. The audience join Peter on the vocal loop which starts the song.

A few minor dropouts, but otherwise very clean and an excellent sounding show.

MD5 included and artwork (missing only the back sorry I couldn't the right one)

Enjoy!!!!

-------------------------

MUPPET06 covers a performance from Peter's first solo tour. After leaving Genesis, Peter decided to go into a totally different direction, musically. The first album shows this: there's a wide range of styles, ranging from the well-known Solsbury Hill to the epic Here Comes the Flood and the humorous Excuse Me.

Peter's first tour was, like the album, very varied: it contained songs from the first album, a Genesis song, funky covers, totally reworked covers and perhaps the most interesting: early versions of songs which would eventually be released on later albums.

The set opens with Here Comes the Flood. It's very different from the album version: this one is stripped to the basics. The complete band joins in for a powerful version of Slowburn, which goes right into the eerie Moribund the Burgermeister. During the "I Will Found Out" part of the latter song, Peter used to lie down on the stage, making evil grins, while close lights were focused on his face.

Among the more familiar Modern Love and Humdrum there are a few unusual tracks on the first disc: Indigo is played here before it was released on the second Peter Gabriel album. Also White Shadow was played already during this tour. It's very interesting to listen to, because the arrangements and structure would be radically different on the final release. Also, lyrics would still have to be written.
The disc closes with the Marvin Gaye cover I Heard It through the Grapevine. During the first leg of the tour, Peter had played Gaye's Ain't That Peculiar. For the second leg, he chose to do this one. The song is completely re-arranged, with synthesizer sequences running through the whole song. One of the highlights of the set, IMO.

Next, we're going into more humorous territory: the barber-quartet Excuse Me, with Tony Levin on tuba, followed by Waiting for the Big One.

Moving towards the end of the set, we find another cover: All Day and All of the Night, sequeing out of On the Air. It shows Gabriel and the band are perfectly capable of delivering a more rocking, power-driven song. The set ends with the full band album-arrangement of Here Comes the Flood. The encore, which was just partially on the recording is a gesture to various Genesis fans in the audience: The Lamb Lies Down Down on Broadway.

This recording truly captures the feeling of being there that night. Usually I hate these kind of titles, but for this one I make an exception: hope you enjoy this INTIMATE EVENING WITH PETER GABRIEL!

WHAT WAS DONE?

First of all, after a 32-bit-conversion, the recording was set to the right speed. The recording was equalized. To improve the dynamics, multiband compression was used. Some final equalization was done and the subharmonic frequencies were removed after that.

This was also the first time I used reverb. I used just a little bit of it, which is not really instantly noticeable. It's like the salt we put in our food :)

There were a couple of clicks and loud noises throughout the recording, which were removed. Also a couple of drop-outs were restored. Some of the drop-outs are still noticeable, but they are at least less obvious and less annoying.

There's a skip in the beginning of White Shadow, two or three seconds into the track. I was not able to solve this problem, I used a very short fade/out and fade/in though to make it more pleasing to the ears.

Finally, the recording was normalized.

I equalized, balanced, reduced clap spikes and optimized the volume of the recording.  I fixed a few bad edits and made a speed correction.  Then I split the recording into song tracks.   I did the editing, mastering (tweaking) for this version of this release.  Screen caps of Audacity before (raw) and after (final) are included.

September 10th, 1977
Source : VG for an old recording (at my rating ears)

a very very old trade from the end of '70's with another fan, it's the first time that i seed it on the web with a big thank you to Christian for the help.

i added a short interview from French radio "Fréquence Nord" broadcast in 1977 in track 9 on CD 2.
I try to translate (be cool with my poor English!!)  the Gabriel's speech coz it's in French ( i love the sound of his voice when he speaks in French!!!)

SPEAKER /
Peter Gabriel with Genesis was the first one to give a theatrical dimension at so-called "the rock music" with costume - masks... all these kind of thing, same for the character Rael
with many accessoiries on stage, many stage game. Now are you carry-on like that or simply like a singer who came on stage to do a set?
PG /
Now it's very important for me to begin for the second time very simply, very directly to the public, because i think that the relation is better if the basis is music...
(...some confusing words, i don't understand..)  but i like visual ideas and maybe in some years i'll try to make a show with visual aspect one more time and i want to extend the visual
ideas of Genesis because i think that is the beginning of this progression.

Don't alter the sound of this recording.  The T releases are not to be used as a source for anyones so called remastering projects.  I'm also making available the raw source recording I worked from for this release. It's has (T source raw) in the folder name.  Anyone that wants to work on the raw source recording is free to do that as long as you mention the source tape you used.  Don't use T-1072 version as a source because that one shows what I can do.  Use the (T source raw) recording for your source, it's the one I worked from.  Show us how much better you can do than I did.

-------------------------

For MUPPET06 I did the September 27, 1977 show at the Manchester Apollo. After the MUPPET06 release kotti passed me on some information, and made me aware that David Lowe had a tape of the April 29, 1977 gig, which also happened to be at the Manchester Apollo, and was in fact the very first rock gig at that venue! :)

Soon I discovered there was a second version of this recording circulating, from a 1st gen. tape, transferred by Nigel Butterworth.

After examination I found that the two versions both were from different tapers, both with a very different sound. The DL source was very distant, but did have the very low and high frequencies (great bass drum, and those cymbals were present as well). The NB source was quite compressed with lots of the mid-range, giving a more raw sound. Both were far from perfect, but the disadvantages of each could be covered up by each other. Thus came the idea to try a matrix. More about that in the WHAT WAS DONE? section.

Back to the show:

MUPPET06 came from the second leg of the tour, this show comes from the first leg. There's some differences. Mostly in the order of the songs, but there's some other changes. Peter covered Marvin Gaye's I Heard it through the Grapevine during the second leg, but here he does another song by Gaye: Ain't That Peculiar. Also, where the second leg had a more polished version of Indigo, here we get an early version of the song under the working title A Little Song for Little People. Also, instead of the encore of The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, this time it's Back in NYC.

WHAT WAS DONE?

This release is a so-called matrix, which uses two sources simultaneously. One source had lots of lows and higs, the other mostly mid-range frequencies. They covered each other perfectly, giving the recording a very rich full-spectrum sound, and giving me the chance to have a little more control over the sound than usual: kind of like working with a very simple multi-track :)

It also caused me a lot of head-ache and trouble though ;)
Speed correction was obviously the first step, since the two sources had to be perfectly synchronized. This wasn't as easy as I thought at first: there seemed to be some miniscule speed-fluctations which would result in the two sources going out of sync each minute or so. What I had to do therefore was synchronizing the two sources every minute. Some of the loud songs were painfully difficult to do: All Day and All of the Night and Back in NYC turned out so bad that I decided to use one source only for those.
You'll find that at a few places the two sources seem to go out of sync: I regret this, but since the majority turned out very nice I hope it can be excepted :)

The DL source was mono. Since it was very hissy, I killed some of the ultra-high frequencies that didn't contain music, but did contain hiss. After that some further noise reduction was done, albeit slightly and manually altered. One channel was copied to the other to get two identical channels. After that equalization was done to get an optimal balanced sound.

The NB source was mono as well. I found the right channel to be the best so copied that to the left channel, to get two identical channels again. Equalization was done here as well.

The matrix was 'mixed' in the multi-track feature of Cool Edit. 80% of the show was a mix of the two sources. I balanced the volumes of the two, also did some very slight panning to left and right to create a little stereo. When there was two sources at the same time I also used some additional equalization for each of the sources to accentuate their strengths. Very slight reverb was used as well, with one of the two getting a little more than the other to create some artificial stereo-space again.
The two sources each had some little bits missing, where I would use the other to cover it up. The NB source was missing the first few notes of the Here Comes the Flood piano intro, the beginning of Humdrum, and some audience noise inbetween the encore. The DL source was missing the end of Humdrum, the middle of Slowburn, and also some audience noise inbetween the encore.
As said before, All Day and All of the Night and Back in NYC only use one source: this was the DL source.

After the 32-bit mixdown of these two sources, multi-band compression was done, to create some more dynamics, to flatten some of the excessive bass, and fiddle a bit with the stereo image.

Some final equalization was done and the stereo image was expanded a little again.

Some slight reverb was added as the finishing touch. Hard limiting was used to flat some of the extremely high peaks, the recording was then normalized for optimum dynamic capability on the final CD. Fade-ins and fade-outs were applied, and the recording was converted back to 16-bit with the use of dithering. Finally, this was cut in tracks.

A FINAL NOTE OF IMPORTANCE

On some systems this recording sounds as was intended by me, with a great rich sound, and on some dynamic parts like the intro to On the Air, the loud-quiet contrast in Waiting for the Big One the raw power should really kick in, when all instruments join in.
However, you may find that the bass is way too loud on your system. I found this myself on one system.
What you can do is turn off the 'loudness' button if that was on, and probably the sound is very good then. Else, just lower the bass with the help of your equalizer.

Oh yeah, play it loud!!!!! :)

A FINAL THANK YOU

Thanks to David Lowe for letting me transfer his Manchester tape, and thanks to kotti for making me aware that David Lowe had this tape!
Thanks to Nigel Butterworth for transferring his tape and Jason Bennett for the trade!
Thanks to Alan Hewitt for liner notes!
Thanks to Casimiro Baldanza for helping out with the CD labels in the artwork!

As always, hope you enjoy this remaster, and Happy Holidays!

Peter Gabriel 1977-04-10 The Roxy Los Angeles, CA early show (JEMS)

Peter Gabriel
The Roxy
Los Angeles, California
April 10, 1977
Early show

FM broadcast from master reel -- from JEMS archives

Lineage:  JEMS 2014 Transfer: off-air master reel to reel tape  > Otari 5050mkII azimuth-adjusted transfer > Sound Devices USBPre 2 > Audacity 2.0 (24/96) capture > iZotope RX click repair > Peak 6.0 with iZotope Ozone 5.0 > re-sample 16/44.1 > Audigy Audio Cleaning Lab* => FLAC front-end (16-bit)

*  Audio Cleaning Lab was used to apply the following effects to the source recording:
    - Moderate de-hissing and de-noising (adaptive)
    - Boost higher range (primarily 13 kHz)
    - Boost lower range (primarily 170 Hz)

The mix on the broadcast improved approximately 15 minutes in; the upper registers opened up and the stereo separation improved slightly.  I tried to apply additional EQ lightly on the first portion so that the change appears seamless.

Comments:
In mid-February 2014, "metro_cubo" shared a variety of sources of this famous Peter Gabriel show, several of which are still on the tracker as of this writing (March 2014).  This inspired the JEMS team to pull out and digitize an uncirculated master reel from their (apparently bottomless) archives, and they asked me to see what I could do with it.  I was happy to contribute what I could; this radio broadcast was widely bootlegged in the 1980s and among the first bootleg LPs I ever bought.  The quality doesn't really hold up to the standards of modern FM broadcasts, but I have an attachment to it because I played it to death while I was growing up, and it remains one of my favorite solo Peter Gabriel shows.

The back-story, for those who don't know it -- this show took place roughly a month into Peter's first solo tour; he played two nights (4/9-4/10) at the Roxy in Los Angeles, with two performances each night.  This recording captures the early show on the second night, carried live on various radio stations around the United States.  According to the DJ chatter, this marks the first attempt at a live nationwide simulcast of a concert performance.  You'll hear during the encore break (d2t8) a partial listing of the stations who carried the performance as it happened; it must have been quite a breakthrough to do this in real-time in the 1970s.

Given how closely Peter was associated with Genesis, it's interesting that even on his first tour he chose to focus almost entirely on material from his only solo album, with only one track ("Back in NYC") from his Genesis catalog.  The 80-minute set was filled out with covers (Marvin Gaye's "Ain't That Peculiar" and the Kinks' "All Day and All Of The Night") and even an unreleased track ("A Song Without Words," which later became "Indigo").  Listening to this show makes one appreciate what a strong album his debut release was -- there is literally not a weak song in the set.

The performance, like every other show I've heard from this tour, was fantastic, augmented with a top-notch band that featured Robert Fripp (performing under the pseudonym "Dusty Rhodes," who according to legend remained entirely behind a curtain for the whole show).  If you don't have any of the multiple releases of this concert (or for that matter, anything from this tour), it's worth the download.

In terms of the recording, it is very good given the era -- but not perfect.  The vocals distort a bit during the louder portions, and the mix is kind of shaky in points. Furthermore, there was a fair amount of hiss in this recording (and probably evident in the broadcast itself, given that this source is a master reel that has probably not been played much).  The tweaks I made in Audio Cleaning Lab removed the majority of the hiss and surprisingly brought out nuances in the guitars and keyboard; the vocals are still too low for my liking, but overall this is a very enjoyable recording of a great concert.

As noted above, there were two dropouts on this reel which have been patched from an alternate KMET broadcast source that is still on the tracker.  I provided a sample of one of them ("Waiting For The Big One") which shows the improvement in quality for this source compared to the version already in circulation.

I'm sure there are dozens of versions of this broadcast in circulation; I can't say by any means that this is "definitive," but am confident that this will compare favorably with most.

Many thanks to JEMS for making this one available to the masses.  Mp3 samples are included in the comments.
