The 3rd time my son & I have seen the Strypes - his first time in the Academy as it was an all ages
show.

This band just get better and better live - tunes from their excellent new album sound great live
and tunes from their first album sound just as good as ever.

This one turned out OK - taped from my usual spot in The Academy. As everyone wanted to be close
to the stage I had plenty of room in front of me.

For the old fashioned amongst us who stil burn to disc I'd recommend splitting after Queen of
the Half Crown.

Remember to support The Strypes - buy their records & merch and go see them live.

Enjoy the show!

Yes 1969-10-27 Actuel Festival Amougies Belgium

Yes, another re-post to this Amougies(Day 4) torrent feat. Yes and Sam Apple Pie (w/Frank Zappa),
speed corrected this time.

In fact tape recorder battery fatigue seems to have led to most of the Yes music sounding way too fast,
about 2 semitones sharp. only the last Yes track needed a speed increase of about +50cts imo.
The Sam Apple Pie tracks sounded fairly all right, just needed some fine tuning in the +/- 30cts range.

Not sure if I have been hitting it right all the time, but
I'd like to leave further extended fine tuning to a more dedicated Yeshead ...
Hope this helps so far. Enjoy !!

Amougies (Belgium), Actuel Festival
27 October 1969

source: audience recording (mono)

And now for the penultimate day of this legendary festival... I'm sure this is one of the most anticipated
performances - a rare early performance by Yes, plus bits from the Pretty Things and Sam Apple Pie sets
(yes, "bits" is the appropriate word - sorry for these bands' fans !).

Yes fans are in for a treat - sonics aside, this is a really interesting listen. First, with the exception
of "Then", they only play covers, including the rare "It's Love" from The Rascals which extensively features
Chris Squire on vocals and bass (there is a version with Steve Howe on the recent live boxed set) - and,
already at that point, has Anderson quoting the introductory theme to Stravinsky's "Rite Of Spring" (as he
again did on "Yessongs"). The climax of the gig, I think, is the very extended "I See You" which has one of
those long, wild guitar/drums duets between Banks and Bruford that Banks has referred to repeatedly but
here's the first real chance of hearing what it really was like. Of course, Yes went on to make great music,
arguably better and more accomplished, but there's a wildness and freedom to their early incarnation that was
missing in their later, superstar days.

Lastly, the usual reminder about the sound quality - the tape recorder used was way below modern standards
and the sound is nowhere near "professional" quality. This reservation aside, however, this is simply an
unbelievable document of a legendary festival, and so our hearfelt thanks to the taper, JJB, for recording
this at the time, and for allowing me to seed it here.

(technical note: JJB tells me he remembers using a Grundig tape recorder with LR14 batteries, using
8cm-diameter reels with a 4,75 cm/s recording speed)

few covers including a brilliant version of Stormy Monday.

I've done my best with the song titles on the new tunes - I took them from a copy
of the setlist my son got on the night. They might not be 100% accurate.

This one sounds really good - taped from the rear of the venue on Pete's
side. Credit to the sound guy in the Spirit Store - he had the sound
dialled in on the night.

For the old fashioned amongst us who still burn to disc I'd suggest splitting after Shades.

Remember to support The Strypes - buy their records, go to their shows & buy their merch

Johnny Cash 1980-05-00 Marriott’s Great America Gurnee, Illinois

Marriott’s Great America

May 1980
Radio broadcast of the first eight songs

1. WMAQ Intro
2. Folsom Prison Blues
3. A Boy Named Sue
4. Sunday Morning Coming Down
5. Ring Of Fire
6. I’m Just An Old Chunk Of Coal
7. Why Me
8. Band introductions
9. Song Of The Patriot
10. Earl Ball instrumental (cut)
-- end of broadcast --

An audience recording of one of Cash’s other shows at Marriott’s Great America in Gurnee, IL was shared here some time ago. We don’t have the exact date for this one. But since Cash talks about his shows here the next days, probably this one is from May 24?

The concert was broadcast live by WMAQ in Chicago - but it seems unlikely that they recorded more than these eight songs. Sometimes (as with the BBC broadcasts of the 1980 Portsmouth show and the 1981 Wembley show) the radio station would edit the recording down to a 30 minutes set with songs from various parts of the show, but this time they simply broadcast the first half an hour of the show.

Folsom Prison Blues and A Boy Named Sue suffers from some static noise, which returns towards the end of Song Of The Patriot.

Audience recording

To celebrate our first week of this forum, here is a little known show from the Lone Star State, the venue is Billy Bob's - a place that seems to gather a noisy crowd at times, but the guy who taped this show knew how to do it. So lets give our thanks to him.

But something tells me that this version is incomplete, so if you have a longer one.....
Or if you know the complete set list, please post that in our known recordings forum. Anyway, this is a good show, and while the set list may be pretty standard for 1985, its an inspired performance, and definitely worth it.

So, come on folks, I bet some of you went to this show - what was it like, and how does this recording reflect it?

I'm not ashamed to admit that I love this band! They flat out friggin' rock! I saw them a couple years ago and was blown away. Tonight was no exception, they were tight and energetic! If you listen carefully between the first few songs you'll get to hear Gary Busey hootin' and hollerin'. Apparently he's a big fan of the band. He was in the booth next to us with his girlfriend and tour manager.

Comments: This is a show I downloaded courtesy of the Yahoo Shooter Jennings Group.
It shows Shooter in the midst of his run with the 357's. Even though Shooter has moved to a more alt-rock sound lately, this show is a riot of Southern Country Rock-n-Roll. Waylon would have been PROUD!!

ENJOY! Any more info on this show would be welcome.

Steve Earle Cover Town, Vol. 4

STEVE EARLE
Cover Town, Vol. 4

Years ago I made 3 compilations of live songs written by other artists, performed by Steve Earle. Finally I have enough material for a 4th compilation.

From the original text that came with volume 1:

" While Steve Earle is known primarily as one of the great singer/songwriters of his (or any) era, fans who've seen or heard his live shows know that he is also a brilliant interpreter of other artists' work.
With this in mind, I have gone through my collection of Steve's shows and extracted the best versions of his covers and put together this collection, which will be followed by at least two more volumes.

For the purposes of this collection, I have only used songs from Steve's own shows. He's done many guest appearances at other artists' concerts, doing duets, but I'll leave those. Of course there is the occasional
duet here from his shows. Also, I didn't use his  first known recorded live show (Hickory 1982), since that consists almost entirely of covers and people might as well get it in its entirety (it has been shared previously on Dime).

With so many sources, I have left out the lineages, but want to thank the tapers, the people I've traded with, and the people who've uploaded Steve's shows online."

Some tracks were extracted from CD, the newer ones came directly from flac as uploaded on sites like Dime. I adjusted and balanced volume and applied fade in/out.

Note on choice: many songs of the compilation come from the period when Steve's Townes Van Zandt tribute album was released. Consequently live shows from this period had many Townes songs. Including those
songs would not have given much variation, so I left them out, except for one song which was performed before the album came out.

None of these tracks has been commercially released.
Enjoy!

Steve Earle Cover Town, Vol. 3

STEVE EARLE
Cover Town, Vol. 3

This is the third and so far last volume in the series of covers Steve Earle has done over the years.
All tracks come from my own collection. Where I have more than one version of a song I have selected
either the best source or a version I am partial to.

Again I have only used songs from Steve's own shows and left out guest appearances at other artists' concerts.
Of course there is the occasional duet here from his shows.

Technically what I did was: extraction with EAC; some trimming with CDWave (I have deleted tuning and talk that has nothing to do with the songs); and fade in, fade out, and normalizing with SoundForge.
With so many sources, I have left out the lineages, but want to thank the tapers, the people I've traded with, and the people who've uploaded Steve's shows online.

Enjoy!

Steve Earle Cover Town, Vol. 2

STEVE EARLE
Cover Town, Vol. 2

This is the second volume in the series of covers Steve Earle has done over the years.
All tracks come from my own collection. Where I have more than one version of a song I have selected
either the best source or the most special/rare one.

Again I have only used songs from Steve's own shows and left out guest appearances at other artists' concerts.
Of course there is the occasional duet here from his shows.

Three covers on this volume have also appeared on volume one, but from different shows:
- Saturday Night, Sunday Morning ( David Olney). David Olney is one of my favourite artists and he deserves any attention he can get.
- Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way
- Sailor Man

I have covers from my collection for a third volume. Naturally I am interested in covers that you may have and which are not
included in the compilations.

I'm looking for live version of:
- Dim Lights ( I know 2000-11-11 has it)
- My Back Pages  ( not sure if a live versions exists)
- Creepy Jackolope Eye
- California Sun
- Cocaine ( traditional version adapted by Davis)
- Ohio (Young)

Technically what I did was: extraction with EAC; some trimming with CDWave (I have deleted tuning and talk that has nothing to do with the songs); and fade in, fade out, and normalizing with SoundForge.
With so many sources, I have left out the lineages, but want to thank the tapers, the people I've traded with, and the people who've uploaded Steve's shows online.

Enjoy!

Steve Earle Cover Town, Vol. 1

STEVE EARLE
Cover Town, Vol. 1

While Steve Earle is known primarily as one of the great singer/songwriters of his (or any) era, fans who've seen or heard his live shows know that he is also a brilliant interpreter of other artists' work.

Enjoy!

Doc Watson 1996-03-30 Bijou Theater Knoxville, TN

Doc Watson at the Bijou Theater in Knoxville, TN  3-30-96
Audience Recording 44.1khz, 16bit

This is a stealth, audience, analog recording from my seat- pretty close to center of this small venue.  I had the microphone up my sleeve with just the tip of it sticking out.

Lineage/editing:  Sony D-5 Pro Walkman with Sony ECM-909 microphone on TDK SA-X100 cassette tape w/ Dolby B (originally intended for Dolby-Chain transfers to other cassettes), captured to computer via SB Audigy A [E400] - (Dolby off) and then encoded to WAV with Cool Edit 2000. Tracking, Normalizing and attempts to decrease volume of clapping were also with the Cool Edit 2000 software.  The Fingerprint and Torrent were created with Trader's Little Helper.  Fades were added to begin and end CD's in the corresponding WAV files. Coincidently each set that Doc played were about 50 minutes long and so the show should be burned to 2 CD's and the files are arranged with this in mind.

The Historic Bijou Theater is a small theater (holding only around 700 including when the balcony is filled) built around the turn of the century and has fairly lively acoustics so if someone in the theater talks or sneezes it could be heard by all.  On this night at the end of March in 1996, there seemed to be a prevalence of people with colds so you can hear coughing here and there.  Also, the clapping of the audience is abnormally loud, and you can hear cheers or comments from people through-out.  But the sound from my stealthy equipment (in my opinion) is quite good!

Adjustment of the volume by the house and by me from the time Doc Watson stepped on stage until about a minute or so into the first song is quite noticeable.  I upped my levels to hear his comments which added hiss.  Fortunately, with the added volume at the venue and with an increase in recording levels hiss is decreased after this. In regards to the songs, I was not sure of some of the their titles.  I have included a (?) to indicate this uncertainty.  If anyone can clarify what these are I would be obliged.

Just 48 hours before the big reunion gig, here's Jim 'n' Bob's first public performance as a duo back in 1994.
It's short, but fairly hot.  Actually, it's excellent, if you compare it to other one-offs like Live Aid,
Atlantic '88, and the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony jam.

Tracks 1-5 come from the "Together Again" Silver CD.  The soundboard version of Can't Quit You comes from the
"Together Again V" CD.  The AUD portion is good by mid-'90s standards, boomy and recorded a little too hot at
certain points in the performance.  I can't really tell whether it's DAT or MD, but it doesn't sound like an
analog job to me.  The SBD is very nice.  Too bad it's just one tune.

Enjoy!!!!  And lets hope they play some blues Monday Night.

as being his favorite venue America to play in. Sources in the data base list
this show as AUD, SBD and Matrix. After a close listen it seems most likely
to be a Matrix recorded by Billy Wolf for the band. It is mentioned by Jimmy
that the band was recording the show, this must be the tape. This is fantastic
recording. After another close listen in the second transfer there were two
more cuts at approximately 45 minute increments. This leads me to believe that
the master source tape was a cassette. These cuts were during crowd between
songs and were smoothed over with crossfades.
