Eugene's Ice Box - Sizzix Holiday 2021

Eugene's Ice Box was a fun sample I made for the Tim Holtz Sizzix Holiday 2021 release. Instead of using the Retro Oven as a baking tool, I decided to pair it with Eugene the penguin and make it an icery instead of a bakery. I thoroughly enjoyed thinking up the things Eugene was making to sell in his Ice Box shop with different Sizzix dies and a few Idea-ology bits thrown in for good measure.
Most of the details are in the video tutorial above. At the half-way mark I do a quick tutorial on how to put the oven together because I got some requests for that. I know it isn't something everyone needs, but for some who are new to Colorize and wanted to start with the Retro Oven, I was happy to attempt to help.

I assembled the Retro Oven from all Metallic Kraftstock. Then I covered the whole thing in a layer of Icicle Holiday Texture Paste. I crackled beautifully and some even chipped off. I love it. I added a tiny bit of Snowfall Holiday Grit Paste around the outside edges and the inside edge. Then attached a rectangle dome.

Look at that crackle!!

I cut a second oven base from Distress White Heavystock and attached a piece of Frosted Film to it. You could use vellum.

Then I wanted something that looked cold to be inside the dome so I added some Idea-ology Bubbles.

If you saw my Snow Techniques video, I showed how to make these sparkly ice balls out of Bubbles, Glossy Accents and Distress Glitter, It's a few posts back so check it out here if you missed it.

When the ice balls are dry, put them in the dome and seal it up with the second oven base cut from White Heavystock.

The base of the piece is a framed panel. I painted it white, the sprayed some Dsitress Snow Flurries Mica Stain on it. Then I spread a nice layer of Icicle Holiday Texture Paste all over the back panel an pressed some acetate pieces into it that had been embossed with the new Cobblestone 3D Texture Fade. You need to press it into the Texture Paste and lay some books on it and let it dry at least overnight.

The frame was also painted white, then I put Distress Crackle Texture Paste over the frame, let it dry and crack, then added a layer of the Icicle Holiday Texture Paste over that. I finished it off with some Snow Flurries Mica Stain that I rubbed into the cracks and then wiped off the excess. You also add some of the Scalloped Etcetera Trim as a shelf on the bottom of the frame once you have adhered it to the dry background.

I wanted the Retro Oven to light up but look cold, so I used a set of 2020 Halloween Tiny lights in purple. I wrapped them around some coffee stirrers at the top and bottom of the window and then put Foam Tape all around the edges of the oven before I adhered it in place on the shelf.

Here it is in place on the shelf. Now to decorate around it.

The sign is just Heavystock cut to size on the Deckle Trimmer. It's great for icy, wintery projects.
Cut the Christmas Cookie bases from clear acetate or Frosted Film. Cut the frosting from pearl Sizzix Surfacez cardstock.Adhere with Collage Medium or Glossy Accents and then slather with a nice layer of Icicle Holiday Texture Paste. Let dry, rub some Snow Flurries Mica Stain into the cracks to make it look extra icy.
To make the tiny cookie bags I recommend you watch the video. It's too difficult to describe in an economy of words.
Add some presents from Eugene on each shelf, a little sparkly tinsel and some greenery cut from pearl paper, and even add a few Idea-ology Beaded Berries (retired) if you have them in your stash. They are a personal favorite!
Look at those ice balls... they look cold and frosty.

If you would like some help putting together the Eugene colorize die, Sizzix has a video here. He is so cute!

I hope you found something inspiring or at least learned an idea or tip that will help your creative projects. Thank you so very much for stopping by!

Have a creative day!

The timing of your post is perfect! I am getting ready to color some bottle brush trees and I was looking at all my greens and trying to determine which colors I want to use - your trees were very helpful with that. And the snow on the trees... Happy to see which stayed white and which ones did not. You inspired me to try the opaque paste with the mica flakes on top - snowy and icy. So much wonderful information and seeing your makes in the video with the samples really help to visualize what you were sharing.

BTW... I live in Ohio and we just had our 1st snow yesterday. Snow definitely looks like opaque paste. The  translucent looks more like ice here when the sun shines on it.

Looking forward to see what else you share this week!

Tami thanks so much for showing your snow making techniques. I have always wanted to try these but wasn’t sure where to start. I see all of the beautiful snowy projects and think that I want to do this too. I love the little elf house so that will be my next project with all the snowy goodness. Thanks so much for your demonstration. Catherine (Australia)

Mr. Frost's Winter Wonderland

Mr. Frost tuning in to his favorite TV show while he decorates is a picture of how I decorate too. I love watching George C Scott's A Christmas Carol, While You Were Sleeping, and Elf to name a few. What are your favorite must watch Christmas shows?

Of course, this Etcetera Tag was made as a sample for the Tim Holtz Sizzix Holiday 2021 release and it features Mr. Frost, Tall Pines, Christmas Minis, and the Retro TV, plus lots of Distress Products for icy snowy effects.

The video walk through of this project will be far more helpful for you than the rest of this blog post, but the still photos below will allow you to really see details I discuss in the youtube video. I also discuss several additional things in this video, including a past project with the Retro TV. I hope my little side diversions prove to be helpful as well.

First, Mr. Frost is certainly cute! I love his twiggy arms and smile. He is a simple Colorize die and you'll have no trouble putting him together.

His little hat is so cute. I used some Sizzix Opulent Cardstock from the Charcoal pack for his hat. I have a link to several of the Opulent packs in my affiliate links below. They are a great deal and have a variety of paper types from glitter to metallic and pearl like this one. 50 sheets in each pack! The little bit of Holly is from the Christmas Minis die set.

Since I wanted to use the Christmas Mini dies on this project, I thought it would be good to have him holding one or two of them as if he was decorating his place for Christmas. This little candy cane is very easy to assemble.
As I said earlier, I decided to have him watching his favorite Christmas show while he was decorating and funny enough, he loves Frosty the Snowman. ⛄

His twig arms are not only perfect for holding things, but also perfect for turning channels and turning up the volume on the Retro TV which is how we had to do it back in the day, right? Somebody actually had to get up to turn the knobs. 😁

I used the tree and snowman Christmas Minis for the scene in the Retro TV. I tried to make it one of the scenes in Frosty the Snowman when his hat blows away.

I layered first Icicle Texture Paste and then Snowfall Grit Paste on the Silver and Gold Metallic Kraftstock on the TV. Because Mr. Frost lives outside his TV needed to be cold and icy too.
I added some of the present and wreath Christmas Minis all around the TV as well.

A little close up of the Icicle Texture Paste and Snowfall. I love these Holiday pastes! I'm glad I ordered extras.

Because I used the Holiday Mica stains for the Christmas Minis, I wanted to test out how the various Grit Pastes reacted with it, so I took longet to make this post than originally intended.

When the Holiday Mica Stains were released in September, I had made these little Gift Tags with them . I set them aside to use for Christmas gifts, but then decided they would be perfect for snow swatches of Mica Stains.

Snow Flurries reacted much like Tumbled Glass and didn't really change much. I had used Hickory Smoke and Walnut Stain Distress Ink around the edges of the tags.

The Holly Branch turned them all green, even with two layers of each grit paste.

Winterberry turned the pastes pink, but the Snowfall still looked icy which was impressive!

Peppermint Stick as always, the red bled through them all, BUT the snowfall still looks snowy.  I am so impressed with Snowfall!

Now on to something you might have been waiting for....

Fire and Ice - Cozy Winter Vignette

First up for my 2021 holiday makes for the Tim Holtz brands is this little vignette featuring the Sizzix dies Cozy Winter, Tall Pines, Mountain Top, and Festive Words. I'm calling this Fire and Ice, because my video tutorial focuses mostly on the snowy elements and how to make that campfire. You can see the video here:

If you want to see the detail photos up close, I have them posted below.

Start with a small Vignette Tray. I painted the sky with Chipped Sapphire and Black Soot Distress Paint.
Next I stenciled the snow on it by applying Snowfall Holiday Grit Paste through the Speckles 021 stencil.

Cut the pieces for two Mountain Tops, then cut one in half. Adhere the whole one in the center back and the pieces on the sides.

To add some dimension, cut several Tall Pines from two different greens from the Idea-ology Cool Kraftstock pack. Cut them apart and attach some of the smaller trees on the Mountain Top dies. Hand cut some low hills or mounds of snow, and attach them to some dimensional foam tape before adhering them to the back of the tray.

Be sure to put some more Snowfall Holiday Grit Paste on your finger and then pounce it on the trees so they look snowy and frosty. Cover the hills with Opaque Grit Paste. Then add the medium sized trees to the hills.

Lastly, add the tallest of the Tall Pines in the front on both sides of the Vignette Tray.

If you cover the bottom of the Vignette tray with a nice thick coat of Opaque Grit Paste dusted with Distress Rock Candy Glitter, you can often get the trees to stand by themselves. Just add some collage Medium on the bottom and press the trees into the Grit Paste and hold until you are happy with it.

Cut some of the branches from brown paper. If it is colored with Distress Inks or Stains, you need to seal it with Distress Medium to prevent it from turning the snow a yellowy orange. Cut the long branches into smaller ones and arrange them in a base shape for a campfire on the left side and a pile of sticks on the right side.

Drill a hole in the back of the tray just above the campfire nest. Take the Tiny Lights and roll them into a ball. Adhere to the Campfire next with hot glue (be careful not to ruin the lights) or a blog of Collage Medium. Let it cool or dry while you work on the flames.

Cut two small pieces with the tiny trees from a piece of red/orange paper. To add a bit of interest you can spray a bit of Distress Mica Stain onto it  to add more detail. Adhere the "flames" to yellow vellum and roughly cut out around each flame. Then cut a few out of the Pine Trees just from vellum.

Attach the flames to one another but only on the sides. When the sides are completely dry, then slide the fire over the ball of lights and adhere it along the bottom. This takes some crumpling it up and around the ball of lights so take your time and hold it until it dries some and is secure.

You'll want to cut some of the trees just from vellum and then add a little Collage Medium to the sides of the ball and tuck then around inside the flames so they covere the ball of lights and look more like flames.

Put the Cozy Winter bear together as you wish and attach him front and center. You will need to support him with some substantial dimentional foam tape or something else so has is the prominant feature in the Christmas tow

Cozy Bear's face is so cute!

I covered the entire Festive Words with Icicle Distress Crackle Holiday Texture Paste. When dry, highlight the tops of the letters with Snowfall Grit Paste.

Thank you so much for visiting my blog. I always mean it when I say I appreciate your interest and support of my hobby. It means so much to me!

Also, if you haven't already, please check out the Snow Techniques post here as there is a giveaway and entry information as well.

Have a creative day!
