ARDEN.

ARDEN by GD HARPER.

Genre ... Historical Fiction
Publication Date ... 3rd October 2024
Estimated Page Count ... 400
Standalone Novel

Alice Arden, idealistic and wealthy beauty, burnt at the stake for killing her husband, the former mayor of Faversham in Kent. But was she really the one responsible for the most scandalous murder of the sixteenth century?

William Shakespeare, England’s greatest playwright, born thirteen years after Alice’s execution. Why does his first-ever play, written about this murder, not bear his name?

This is a story of two people – one reviled, one revered – whose fates become linked in a tale of corruption, collusion and conspiracy. Based on historical documents and recently published academic research, Arden unveils shocking new evidence about the murder of Thomas Arden and reveals, for the first time, a remarkable new theory about Shakespeare’s early years.

Having read and really enjoyed the author's previous book, The Maids of Biddenden, I cannot express how excited I was to learn of this novel.
The sights, the sounds, the smells, what people were wearing, the foods they ate, the culture, politics and social norms of the time. I can only begin to imagine the amount of time and research that must go into any work of historical fiction. That this book is based on actual historical documents and academic research, all kudos to the author who does it soooo incredibly well.
Following a duel timeline, that of Alice Arden and Shakespeare. Again, not something every author can pull off but GD Harper does with a wonderful self-confidence, his seemingly effortless ability to put himself into not only his characters' shoes but also the times they lived in making for an authentic read despite the fact that Arden's voice has not survived the annuls of time and so little is actually known of Shakespeare's early years.
The tale of a love-struck young woman, manipulated by powerful men, who goes on to pay the ultimate price ... and then some, such is the savagery of her punishment. As much as I enjoyed the part Shakespeare was to play in the book, it was Alice's story that, saddening me as deeply as it did, grasped me from beginning to end.
Enlightening, entertaining, intricate plotting, chock-a-block full of wonderfully rich, historical detail and an engaging narrative, Arden has it all when it comes to quality historical fiction and has left me super excited to see what the author comes up with next.

I have written four novels in the last eight years under the penname GD Harper. My last novel, The Maids of Biddenden, the imagined biography of real-life conjoined twins born in 12th-century Kent, was featured on BBC TV News and was the winner of the Next Generation Indie Book Awards in the historical fiction category, shortlisted for the 2022 Selfie Award at the London Book Fair, and shortlisted or longlisted for five other awards. It has over a thousand ratings on Amazon UK and Goodreads, with an average score of 4.3. Across the major Amazon markets, it reached number sixteen in overall paid-for e-book sales, number two in historical fiction and number one in medieval historical fiction.

Kate seems to have it all – wonderful friends, a successful career and an idyllic life in the quirky Yorkshire town of Essendale. But under the surface Kate’s lonely, and she longs to feel part of a family – especially during Christmas.

With the holiday season fast approaching, and the town desperate to attract more visitors, Kate conceives a brilliant plan: an enchanting living Advent calendar. Each December evening, a captivating window display will be unveiled across town. With local businesses struggling, including her best friend’s board game café, she's feeling the pressure.

But Kate’s picture-perfect plans take an unexpected turn when her ex-boyfriend arrives in Yorkshire, insisting on creating the Christmas Eve display. Can Kate trust him to deliver a show-stopping window? And can she finally put the past behind her and embrace the future she’s always dreamed of?

Having visited the Scrabble Board Cafe in this quaint English village previously, first in Love Letters On Hazel Lane {book 2 in the series} and more recently in Second Chances at the Board Game Café {book 3 in the series} what better way to celebrate Christmas than with a return visit.

Such a wonderful cast. Mr B and his baubles by far my favourite though I did enjoy the exploration of Kate as a somewhat conflicted individual {how can she possibly resolve her current issues and consider a meaningful romance when she still has childhood issues to deal with?}, the beauty of her character being that, like her or not, relate to her/her situation or not, she is written with such a beautiful warmth and depth that you cannot help but feel for her.

Billed as the 'Standalone Fourth book in the Little Board Game Café series'. Whilst perfectly readable in its own right, I really would suggest that in order to get the best out of them they be read in order as whilst not dependent on the previous book each book builds on the previous one.

A great addition to the franchise. As much as I loved this as your fairly typical festive cosy-romance, delving as it did into the difficulties encountered by struggling local/village business, Kate's answer to which is the 'living advent calendar', I enjoyed it equally as a festive contemporary read.

Jennifer Page wrote her first novel – a book about ponies – when she was eight. These days she prefers to write romance. When she isn't writing, Jennifer can usually be found playing board games which are the inspiration for her first novel. She has worked as a television producer, a music teacher and has even run a children's opera company. She now lives near Hebden Bridge in West Yorkshire with her husband and his large collection of games.

Rodasauri the Diplodocus has always dreamed of experiencing a proper London Christmas. On his way to find this land of sparkling decorations, he meets the generous Father Christmas who helps him get to London, taking him on a tour of all the wonderful and diverse Christmas treats that London has to offer. What Rodasauri finds is a place of love and friendship, filled with many different people—and now a dinosaur! —who all join together to celebrate the spirit of Christmas.

With dinosaurs so hugely popular at the moment I feel like the author was already onto a winner with Rodasauri The Dinosaur's Trip To London, factor in that its also a Christmas story and well ...
The delightful story of a dinosaur, Rodasauri, who dreams of visiting London only to be told by his mum that "Dinosaurs shouldn't go to cities because people believed they were extinct." Not to be deterred though Rodasauri sets off with a backpack and a map from his home in Divouri to London with the help of, who else, but of course, Father Christmas.
A wonderful festive tale at the heart of which is the message of friendship, kindness and the offering of hospitality despite the fact that someone might be very different from yourself.
There's turkey, yule logs and singing carols around the Christmas tree, set partly against a backdrop of famous London landmarks such as Big Ben and Tower Bridge. The bright, bold illustrations bringing to life Rodasauri's journey as he gets to experience his first Christmas in London and all that that entails with his new friends who open up not just their home but their hearts to him.
This really is such an exceptionally delightful story that I can see being a firmed favourite that is shared Christmas after Christmas ... and, for all of those dinosaur mad children, every day in between.
Lainey Dee was born in Birmingham UK.She has always been passionate about caring for children and made this her career. Lainey is an accredited nanny and holds the NNEB certificate. She has worked both in children’s nurseries and as a private nanny. Her inspiration to write ‘Rodasauri the Dinosaur’s Trip to London ‘came while caring for Thomas and Rose, age five, who have a huge dinosaur collection and can remember and pronounce all of the difficult names.

Lainey lives in a house built in the 1930s and decorated in that style of period. She enjoys museums, walking, visiting National Trust properties and theatre shows.
