Night Char Kueh Teow Stall Next to Restaurant Ali Food’s Corner in Kepong Baru – Simple and Nice

After a round of post dinner walk with my little toddler at Desa Park City, I drove up to Kepong Baru to check out the food there. This must be my lucky day, as I wanted to post about this stall long ago but every time I came looking for this Char Kuih Teow (fried flat noodles), it was closed. I was surprised to see the old Chinese uncle there busily frying the flat noodles. This wet market area is quite dark at night; I thought I am seeing ‘things’! Ha ha ha! Anyway, I asked the helper why they were closed for so long and she became curious; she said that they were open on most days except on Sunday when the pasar malam (night market) is on. The old uncle added that he will not operate the stall if it rains heavily. Ahhhh, now I know why, I missed this nice Char Kueh Teow stall so many times! LOL! Don’t let looks deceive you, the mobile stall might look old and the char kueh teow looks simple but the taste is just delicious. The way of frying is more of Southern style; a little wet and dark, unlike the Char Kueh Teow in Penang which is lighter in colour and dry as well. It has a nice ‘wok hei’ (wok heat) aroma and it is one of the good ones in KL that I came across. Another thing I like about this stall is the assistant uses disposable plastic to handle the raw keuh teow (noodles) to ensure cleanliness. The cooking utensils used are also clean! My wife loves the Char Kueh Teow from this stall very much, so I ‘tar pau’ (takeaway) one packet for her. She was busy at home helping my kids with their exam revision, so couldn’t join us for a night out! Prices start from RM3; I guess must be ‘kosong’ (without condiments or eggs, written in Mandarin, sorry lah, ‘Bananaman’ cannot read); Small is RM3.50 and Large RM4.00.
Don’t be surprised if you don’t see any chairs or tables provided by this stall. The Ali Food’s Corner Restaurant actually allows this Char Kueh Teow owner to serve it inside their outlet. However, be prepared to wait during peak hours! Fancy having sawi (Chinese mustard) added Char Keuh Teow with a cup of Mamak Teh Tarik? (Milk Tea)

Tasty Fried Kueh Teow Mee – Desa Aman Puri Pasar Malam (Night Market, every Tuesday)

This is my daughter’s favourite fried kueh teow mee (flat rice noodles with yellow noodles) and I would buy it for her whenever I visit the pasar malam (night market) in Desa Aman Puri (1st Mee stall at market entrance), KL on Tuesday or Kepong Industrial Park (KIP) on Saturday. The stall set up is rather simple; a place for frying the mee with an industrial fan and 2 tables to put all the fried noodles. It might look very simple when you see the aunty frying the noodles but then the mee is very tasty and full of wok hei aroma. The frying style is more of southern or maybe KL wet/dark style unlike Penang which is rather dry and the noodles are not so dark. I remembered the first time when I bought a small packet of fried noodles from this stall, my daughter who is a small eater managed to finish all of it. So, nowadays I have to buy a large packet which cost me RM4 (USD1.20). Heh heh heh.......Tuesday tomorrow, I will drop by Desa Aman Puri Pasar Malam to tar pau (take away) this nice fried noodle for supper!
Do you like fried yellow noodles only, kueh teow only or mixed?

Sisters Char Kueh Teow (Fried Flat Rice Vermicelli), USJ 16/2G Subang Jaya, Selangor

A friend of mine told me about this 10 months old restaurant. It is not related to the famous Penang sisters char kueh teow but the lady boss, Mrs Cheng told me that she is from Penang. Before venturing into this restaurant business, she was actually running a minimarket in the same location. She decided to call it quit when low price SpeedMart open just a few shoplots away. I went to Subang Jaya to meet up with a client last week and I decided to look for this restaurant. I was not very sure of the actual location because my friend just gave me a rough direction to the place. After a few turns around the housing area, I found Sisters Char Kueh Teow coffee shop (kopitiam). It is located next to Ah Pek Kopitiam. I went in the restaurant and immediately ordered a plate of char kueh teow (RM4.00) with a glass of kopi peng (iced coffee with milk, RM1.50). The char kueh teow is a little bit more of a cross between Penang style and KL wet type. It tastes quite good, actually! The wok hei (hot wok fire smell) gave it an extra flavour. This restaurant also serves Penang Curry Mee, Chee Cheong Fun, Kueh Teow soup, Yong Tau Foo, wantan mee, fried rice and Penang Style Hokkian Char.

Accompanying Mom and Dad to Chai Leng Park Wet Market

The alley leading to the Chai Leng Park wet market

I would bring my kids back to my home town in Butterworth whenever I could, so that my mom and dad who are in their eighties would get to see their grandchildren. They are too old to travel to KL and they miss my kids very much especially my little toddler. I was back in Butterworth during the recent long weekend due to the Merdeka holidays. My little toddler, who is now 21 months old, kept grandpa and grandma amused with his cheeky antics. Mom still insists of doing her own marketing so my wife and I took her to the wet market in Chai Leng Park on the Sunday morning. In fact I would always accompany my mom to the market whenever I am back in Butterworth. We arrived at the around 7.30 am and the car park around the market was already almost filled up with cars! Seeing my old and frail parents walking slowly to the market makes me think of how times really fly by so fast all these years. I actually felt quite sad. Well, I was quickly jolted back to my normal frequency when we reached the entrance to the wet market. Mom had already taken her breakfast so she asked me to bring dad to eat his favourite Char Kueh Teow at my friend, Mr Eng’s stall in Kim Sun Restaurant. We ordered two plates of Char Kueh Teow and also black coffee to wash it down. Boy, I really missed a good char kueh teow and also Butterworth black coffee. We ate quickly and went back to the market to help my mom and wife carry the stuff they bought. I stopped by my favourite roast pork stall and purchased 2 packets of roast pork. One for mom and one I put in the freezer to bring back to KL. Then I tar pau (take away) some fried bihun (rice vermicelli) for mom, wantan mee (RM2.40) for my eldest son, nyonya huat kuih, and Indian apam (RM1.20 for 2 pcs). My mom and grandma used to make trays of Nyonya huat kuih using tuak (fermented coconut palm liqueur) during Chinese festivals, like on the ninth day of Chinese New Year, when the Hokkiens offer prayers to the Jade Emperor God (Thnee Kong) My daughter got quite interested in Nyonya stuffs after watching The Little Nyonya in Astro and when I told her that she is a fifth generation Nyonya descendent. Later that night I bought her some Nyonya rice kuih bengka and rempah udang. Now, she is bugging my sister to sew for her a Nyonya Kebaya and beaded shoe.

Kim Sun Restaurant is still empty because it was still early. My nice plate of Char Kueh Teow Nyonya huat kuih................................................... and Indian Apam

Berapit, Bukit Mertajam Mr. Foo Charcoal Fire Char (Fried) Kueh Teow

When my brother in law asked me whether I want to eat Char Kueh Teow fried using charcoal fire, I gladly say yes. He told me the Char Kueh Teow stall only open at night and it is located in a small town Berapit, at Lorong Berapit 1 junction. He said that he will take me there if I don’t mind eating in a dark standalone Char Kueh Teow stall. That makes it more interesting! It has been a while since I last ate Kueh Teow fried with charcoal fire. We arrived in Berapit at 10pm and there were only two customers at his stall. I thought he was about to close his stall but I was wrong. After a while, streams of customers start trickling in to order takes away. Business is real good! His stall is located on the main road just outside a restaurant that is closed for business at night. The small road next to the stall leads to a temple on top of a hill. Mmmmm, I wonder whether they teach Shaolin Martial Art lesson there. LOL! Mr Foo, the owner took over the business from his father and their family has been in this location for the last 30 years. He is a very friend and soft spoken guy. He fried his kueh teow in a very relaxed and cool style, real kung fu at work. I guess after being in this business for such a long time he has mastered the art of CKT to the highest level. The taste of the fried kueh teow is simply delicious, with a little tinge of charcoal fire aroma and lots of kuchai (Chinese Chives). This brings back some nostalgic feeling of my childhood days, eating this type of charcoal fire fried kueh teow for supper! His Kueh Teow is priced at RM2.30 for small serving and RM2.50 for large serving. I will definitely be back here again on my next trip. The CKT stall, picture taken from Berapit main road. Mr Foo, using old traditional sytle of frying kueh teow. The hot charcoal stove! Customers waiting for take away. A plate of good authentic char kueh teow! Authentic Penang Fried Kueh Teow Recipe (Fried Flat Rice Noodles)

I had home cook Char Kueh Teow for breakfast this morning. I like the mine plain without adding too much extra ingredients. If you want your Char Kueh Teow to be tasty use iron wok and fry the Kueh Teow over charcoal fire. The taste should be quite close to Penang Char Kueh Teow. Here is the recipe.

Ingredients
Wet Kueh Teow, 1 bowl
Light Soya Sauce, 1 table spoon
Dark Soya Sauce, ¼ teaspoon
Sugar, 1/3 teaspoon
Bean sprout, ½ bowl
Garlic, 5 pcs, minced
Prawn, 5 pcs, shelled Egg, 1pc
Salt to taste
Chinese Sausage, 5 to 10 slices (optional)
Cockle, 5 pcs, shelled (optional)
Chili paste, to taste (optional)

Fry garlic until fragrant. Add prawn and Chinese Sausage. Add kueh teow, light soya sauce, dark soya sauce, salt to taste, chili paste and sugar.(You can actually premix the soya sauces with sugar, chili and salt first). Fry until the dark soya sauce are evenly mixed with the kueh teow. Add eggs and fry for a while. Add bean sprout and cockle. Your Authentic Penang Fried Kueh Teow is ready.

Three of my Favourite Hawker Stalls at Great Wellesley Food Court, Taman Chai Leng, Prai

This food court is located at the former Chai Leng Park Great Wellesley cinema. It is actually an extension of the cinema building. The three stalls that serve my favourite food are the curry mee, tua pan (wat tan hor in Cantonese, braised fried kueh teow) and char kueh teow. I ‘tar pau’ these for my late night supper when I was back in Butterworth recently. Curry Mee I have been eating the curry mee from this stall for the last 28 years. The owner of the stall has since passed away and his wife took over the business. I have acquired the taste of the curry mee from this stall and it is a must have whenever I go back to Butterworth! It is the best I had so far!

Tua Pan This is hor fun Cantonese style and in Penang we call it tua pan because the kueh teow that we used are wider than the normal hor fun. The tua pan in Penang is real tasty because the hor fun is fried to perfection in hot iron wok and the starchy soup is yummy

Char Kueh Teow This is Mr. Eng’s Char Kueh Teow that I featured in my post http://peteformation.blogspot.com/2008/10/kim-sun-great-wellesley-foodcourt-chai.html.

Char Kueh Teow for Breakfast at Ming Chu Restaurant, Seri Kembangan

After having some good char kueh teow in Penang, I found myself craving for char kuew teow again. I was in Seri Kembangan, so I decided to check out some restaurants that are located at the back of Putra Permai Aeon, Jaya Jusco, Taman Equine. I ordered a plate of Char Kueh Teow from one of the stall in Ming Chu Restaurant. Ming Chu occupies two lots that are back to back of each other. This is a southern wet style of char kueh teow. Unlike the Penang CKT which is dry, I don’t fancy this wet type. There are small bits of chinese sausage in it, too little. But the overall taste is ok. What to do when you are craving for CKT lorrrr! Kim Sun & Great Wellesley Foodcourt, Chai Leng Park, Butterworth, Char Kueh Teow, Kueh Teow Soup, Hokkien Mee and Vegetarian Mee

My friend, Mr. Eng has been frying Char Kueh Teow for the last 38 years and I am his faithful customer for 30 years. Somehow, I have acquired the taste of is CKT and I think it is one of the best one around with its’ own unique taste . Mr. Eng starts selling CKT in Kim Sun Restaurant opposite the Chai Leng Park wet market at 7am in the morning until lunch time, 1pm. At night he will be at the Great Wellesley Foodcourt and business starts at 7pm till midnight; but normally his CKT will be sold out before midnight. He is a real Kung Fu master at frying CKT. If you watch closely, you will notice that he stir the kueh teow with the spatula real fast. You can choose to have the kueh teow fried with chicken eggs or duck eggs. A plate of CKT cost RM2.80 and it is served with prawn, chinese sausage (Lap Cheong) and cockles. \ Mr. Eng cooking up a plate of tasty Char kueh Teow for me.
