VSD (Hole in the heart), Repair...Baylie's journey!

Our sweet Baylie had open heart surgery monday the 11th of June to repair a VSD & ASD (holes in the heart). She did amazing. I wasn't sure if I wanted to post pictures of her stay at the hospital, but then I found it theraputic to see her quick recovery, and felt it may help others facing a similar surgery. Below is a graphic of what a VSD and ASD are: Baylie had both a VSD and a small ASD (we thought the ASD had closed but when they went in for surgery, they found that it was still there, but very small, and closed it as well). They also did some work on a valve (VERY minor). This first photo is Baylie when we first saw her post-op. I stood by her side for a few minutes and soon had to lay down because I could feel the blood draining from my head and I was going DOWN... I am a former dental assistant, and have seen MANY oral surgeries, but I was not prepared for my own child to look so very fragile. I kept having to take a seat for the first few hours there. These next few pictures are of her room and LOADS of monitors and equipment she first started out with. She was so small in there... This picture touched me in many ways. I am so blessed to have a husband who loves his family more than himself. Dan had spent the night trying hard to comfort a hungry (we couldn't feed her for 6 hours after removing the breathing tube), and hurting baby. He never left her side. Baylie had the breathing tube removed about 7 hours post-op. She was left with a line in her neck, foot, and hand. She also had a monitor on her forehead, lower back, and big toe. For the first couple days she had a chest tube for drainage. She also had pacing lines that went from the site of the chest tube up to her heart until the day we left (four days). Those lines were just incase her heart wouldn't regulate. (she never needed to use them). Her cathedar and rectal thermometer (sounds fun right?), were removed on day 2. SO MANY wires and tubes for one little kid! Eating fish and playing with snuggly toys from cousins and siblings on day 2. Going for a ride around the CVICU (cardiovascular intensive care unit) at Phoenix Childrens Hospital. I CANNOT say enough wonderful things about this amazing hospital and staff. We had the best nurses, Drs., techs, and volunteers while we were there. They really made it their first priority to make Baylie comfy and happy. We were so blessed to have the opportunity to do her surgery there. THANK YOU PCH! Some siblings came to visit and brought her a new "baby" doll. She was so happy to see their smiling faces! Her sweet Morin cousins came with a toy as well. She was also visited by grandparents, aunts and uncles, GREAT grandparents, and even a friend of daddy's from work. By day 3 Baylie was eating well (a GOOD thing for sure!). The nurses gave her "Beads of Hope" while she was there. She got a bead everytime she passed a milestone like getting her breathing tube or chest tube removed. On her way home! She was so happy! The above 2 pictures are her scars one week post op and 2 weeks post op. They are looking good and I am looking forward to applying some essential oils to help fade them! We want to than all who prayed for our sweet Baylie or kept her in your thoughts! We felt your love and KNOW she recieved many blessings because of it. We are also thankful for all of you who helped watch kids, brought meals, came to the hospital, or even just asked how she was doing. We were so touched by how many family and dear friends let us know how they were thinking and praying for her. We are thankful she is going to be JUST FINE, and thankful for this opportunity to learn and grow as a family and strengthen our testimonies of prayer and fasting. She came home after just 4 days when the average stay is 5-7! And OF COURSE, how could we forget her Cardiologist Dr. Christopher Lindblade, and surgeon Dr. Christopher Derby. Her Anesthesiologist was amazing as well. He must have checked in on her 3 or 4 times while we were there. He was a very sweet man. I wish I remembered his name! Her nurses were so sweet and dedicated to her care as well. They were a huge comfort and help. THANK YOU ALL! Baylie is doing perfectly and getting stronger every day! Now Baylie can go back to causing trouble with her sweet twin sister Abbie (picture is a few weeks before surgery)! It will be fun to see them learn and grow healthy together!!!
These pics are weeks three and four post op. At week five she had already gained over a pound! She is stonger, bigger, and much much louder! LOVE IT!!!! This picture is of her scar 3 months post op. She is still gaining weight and doing awesome! Both babies have been taking their first steps, and soon we will have a couple walkers around the house to add to the chaos! :)

Happy 1st Birthday to Abbie and Baylie!

What a year...
This time, a year ago (at 37 weeks pregnant), I was just getting checked in at the hospital. Eight hours later, they came without c-section, weighing in at 5 lbs 12 oz, and 6 lbs 7 oz. Now they are 17 and 18 lbs and happy happy happy. We are so blessed to have been able to cap off our family with 2 little bits of heaven. They make us happy and quite literally keep us grounded. HAPPY BIRTHDAY ABBIE AND BAYLIE!!!!

Ten reasons I am normal...I hope. (not actual photos of my house or kids...mostly)

1. I like Chocolate cake

2. My kids rooms aren't perfect.

3. I don't always get to the laundry.

4. The "Oval Office" could use a scrub.

5. I take pictures of my kids covered in poo and post them on the internet.

6. My kids sometimes wander around with a little snot under their nose.

7. I sew alot, but I am not very organized about it.

8. Pretty sure my kids are responcible for the swine flu outbreak.....

9. I frequently put the kids in time out, so I can have "me" time.

10. I am a little behind on the dishes most of the time.

But I am happy!
