Where DO they learn it from?
Friday, August 20, 2010
Brief History & Background
"The Positive Discipline Parenting and Classroom Management Model is based on the work of Alfred Adler and Rudolf Dreikurs [psychiatrists from the early 1900’s]. Dr. Adler first introduced the idea of parenting education to United States audiences in the 1920s. He advocated treating children respectfully, but also argued that spoiling and pampering children was not encouraging to them and resulted in social and behavioral problems.” [taken from the Positive Discipline website]
Over the last 30 years nationally acclaimed authors Jane Nelsen & Lynn Lott have collaborated to produce this method based on their findings & experience. They continue to teach it nationwide, have sold over 2 million of the 19 different books they've written & been interviewed on TV including in the news & on Oprah. In this course you’ll learn how to be Kind & Firm simultaneously in your parenting & other relationships as you find yourself changing for the better in order to produce Positive, Lasting, results!
One Example of Evidence for Positive Discipline
"A study of school-wide implementation of classroom meetings in a lower-income Sacramento elementary school over a four-year period showed that suspensions decreased (from 64 annually to 4 annually), vandalism decreased (from 24 episodes to 2) and teachers reported improvement in classroom atmosphere, behavior, attitudes and academic performance." (Platt, 1979, Positive Discipline website)
