Whonix
"Whonix is an anonymous general purpose operating system based on Virtual Box, Debian GNU/Linux and Tor. By Whonix design, IP and DNS leaks are impossible. Not even malware with root rights can find out the user's real IP/location. This is because Whonix consists of two (virtual) machines. One machine solely runs Tor and acts as a gateway, which we call Whonix-Gateway. The other machine, which we call Whonix-Workstation, is on a completely isolated network. Only connections through Tor are possible."

"Aliens: Colonial Marines"
"…Aliens: Colonial Marines begins with an ostensibly abandoned ship, the U.S.S. Sulaco, recovered in orbit around LV-426. Players lead a group of highly trained United States Colonial Marines as they board the deserted craft to uncover the fate of the crew. They will have to fight to survive unspeakable horrors and their own anxieties as they chase down the truth behind a galaxy-spanning deception that places humanity at the mercy of the most murderous and deadly species in the universe. Aliens: Colonial Marines features authentic environments, such as the surface of LV-426 and Hadley's Hope, weapons inspired by the film series and is designed to provide an exhilarating and engaging new chapter in the Aliens universe…"

Alice and Bob Meet the Wall of Fire: How a new black hole paradox has set the physics world ablaze.
"…Conventionally, physicists have assumed that if the black hole is large enough, Alice won’t notice anything unusual as she crosses the horizon. In this scenario, colorfully dubbed “No Drama,” the gravitational forces won’t become extreme until she approaches a point inside the black hole called the singularity. There, the gravitational pull will be so much stronger on her feet than on her head that Alice will be “spaghettified.”
Now a new hypothesis is giving poor Alice even more drama than she bargained for. If this alternative is correct, as the unsuspecting Alice crosses the event horizon, she will encounter a massive wall of fire that will incinerate her on the spot. As unfair as this seems for Alice, the scenario would also mean that at least one of three cherished notions in theoretical physics must be wrong.
When Alice’s fiery fate was proposed this summer, it set off heated debates among physicists, many of whom were highly skeptical. “My initial reaction was, ‘You’ve got to be kidding,’” admitted Raphael Bousso, a physicist at the University of California, Berkeley. He thought a forceful counterargument would quickly emerge and put the matter to rest. Instead, after a flurry of papers debating the subject, he and his colleagues realized that this had the makings of a mighty fine paradox…"

Deep Convictions, Shallow Roots.
"…Here’s the tricky bit: after a respondent had checked off the numbered boxes, the researchers surreptitiously swapped out that part of the form with a lookalike that reversed the questions (so that morally deplorable became morally honorable, for example). People who hated the harboring of illegals were now on record as loving it, and vice-versa. The questionnaire was then returned to the hapless subject, who was asked to write a brief argument supporting their position.
Fully a third of those who’d registered the most extreme positions — 1 or 9 on the scale — didn’t even notice that their opinions had just magically changed 180°. Not only that, but they went on to construct arguments supporting the exact opposite of what they’d just claimed to strongly believe, effectively enough to convince a blind panel of judges as to their sincerity. And that was only the extremists; if you included those with more moderate leanings a full 69% of the respondents whole-heartedly accepted the turnabout without missing a beat1.
Really? It’s that easy?…"

"…Letteri emphasizes the significant benefits high frame rates bestow upon stereoscopic 3D movies:
I think it’s beneficial with stereo. One of the artifacts of stereo — for example, if you look at something that’s out of focus, maybe an over the shoulder shot, this is where stereo differs from the real world. In the real world, wherever your eye focuses that object snaps to focus. So if you’re looking at a big screen and your eye wanders to something that is out of focus, your eye expects it to go into focus. It can’t. So you’re sitting there focusing on an out of focus object. That’s one of the things that causes your brain [to fritz]. The same thing also happens temporally. If you’ve got an object moving across the screen in the real world your eye wants to be able to track that and your eye wants to see it in focus. But because you’ve already photographed that with this motion blur, your eye cannot focus on something in space that’s blurry. Again, in the real world you never see that. It’s one of those other things that in 3-D your brain says something’s not right here. Well, if you go to high frame right, it is in focus. Your eye can focus on these fast moving objects or even slow moving ones and the detail’s always there. So your brain can make sense of it…"

Corvids: The Birds Who Think Like Humans
"…Someday I will come up with a good reason why I am friends with the neighborhood crows. For now, I can say that it started when I looked up from my office window to see this big flock of crows hanging out on the roof of an apartment building nearby. I had heard that these creatures, part of a larger family of birds called corvids, were among the smartest animals in the world. If they were that intelligent, I wanted to meet them. How could I get those awesome animals to come visit me? I decided to find out.
Six months later, I have made friends with about seven crows and two small, brightly-colored corvids called scrub jays — one of whom eats out of my hand. Like many scientists who study these animals, I've become convinced that these creatures are not only smart, but also have a theory of mind…"

"…What about 48 FPS, the new medium Peter Jackson’s experimenting with on The Hobbit?
What some people are saying is that it looks too real. You see guys in costumes instead of elves and dwarves. Film benefits from a certain level of abstraction. 3D is a way of taking away abstraction, and it’s unclear whether audiences will warm to that or not. Americans are among the slowest to adopt 3D, actually. The Chinese don’t want to see anything else. There’s a cynicism about 3D which is partly the result of films where 3D was done poorly, and that 3D has been done on action movies. And studios shot themselves in the foot by raising prices on 3D. A lot of people will choose not to spend the extra money, which is a shame when we put so much effort into it, and they just see it in 2D.
Plus, a fair number of people don’t see 3D properly. Their optical system isn’t receptive to the 3D you might see in theatres. So, a significant percent of the population it won’t work for, and there’s another drawback. You’re asking your eyes to do things they weren’t evolved to do. Whether 3D remains a niche or takes over entirely, I don’t know. It’s going to be hard to convince people to go to 3D systems at home because people don’t want to wear glasses, understandably, and it’s really hard to do 3D without glasses. Yet, most of what you watch on TV might not benefit from it…"

The Astronomy of Armageddon
"…Bad:
In the opening sequence, we see an asteroid headed for Earth, and are told that this was the Dinosaur Killer 65 million years ago. The narrator says that it exploded with the force of "10,000 nuclear weapons".
Good:
10,000? Where did that number come from? If we assume the asteroid that impacted was 10 kilometers across (a typical number used for the impactor) and moving at 11 kilometers per second (which is actually a minimum speed; it almost has to be traveling faster than that) the impact should release something like 80,000,000 megatons of energy. Hello. Even if we assume a 100 megaton bomb, which is comfortably larger than any nuclear ever detonated, that's eight hundred thousand nuclear weapons! And remember, I rounded down a lot. If the velocity is higher, that number increases. [Note added January 14, 2002: I found a press release about the dinosaur killer impact impact that said the energy released was 10,000 times the world's nuclear arsenal, which is in fair agreement with my calculation above, and shows again that the movie was way off.]
I find this funny: the writers want to make the numbers sound dramatic, but they actually severely underestimate the energy involved. However, this is not too surprising given the mathematics displayed throughout the rest of the flick…"

Interview: Ken Levine on American history, racism in BioShock Infinite: “I’ve always believed that gamers were underestimated.”
"…I realized, in BioShock, that we didn’t have any minority characters. Well, we had a lot of Jewish, Eastern European Jewish characters, which probably comes from my background. Whether it’s Ryan or Tenenbaum. And that game was suffused with the immigrant experience to some degree. But we didn’t have African-American characters. We didn’t have Chinese characters. It’s very important to us that we diversify. Not because… I’m not like, “Oh, we have to have diversity because it was unrepresentative of reality, and I want to be representative of reality.” I wanted to be representative of reality, but that reality was a particular reality to a level that most people don’t even understand. Most people don’t know how Catholics were viewed in this country, or how the Irish were viewed in this country. They were viewed as… I use this term obviously not from myself, but at the time they were viewed as subhuman by some people. When we had our first Catholic president in 1960, many people thought he was going to be an operative of the Pope. He had to publicly proclaim that he wasn’t. We’re fortunate to grow up in a time where a lot of that is behind us. But this game wouldn’t be honest if we didn’t have that…"

Which was briefly reassuring, until some statistician from the University of fucking Buzzkill showed up to witter on about the myth of the perfect failsafe, and how any industry scaling up fast enough to replace fossil fuels in less than two decades would probably be dealing with a couple dozen accidents a day even if it hadn’t built its entire operation on a product that self-replicated…"

Level designers could dial in the weather and all the wave heights, form, spray and destruction would follow. Wave scale height and choppiness are fully artist-controllable. The only major break from reality is that the wind direction did not directly drive the waves, since the wind direction needed to be controlled for game design…"

El TED y las pseudociencias
TED organizers help sniff out bad science for TEDx:
New guidelines help local events identify pseudoscience then keep it off stage.
"…The organization behind the TED talks took what might have been an embarrassing bit of publicity and turned it into an opportunity to define what constitutes decent scientific information. Although TED is most famous for organizing two sets of talks each year, it has branched out into licensing local affiliates that host smaller events. Many of these pick up on the main program's themes of tracking developments in science, technology, and medicine.
Unfortunately, the TEDx events don't always have access to the same competencies TED proper does. This has sporadically resulted in problems with speakers too far outside the mainstream. Take a case in Valencia, Spain for example, where things like crystal therapy and homeopathy ended up being promoted by speakers. That, in turn, led to a Reddit thread highlighting the problem.
Rather than pretending it never happened, TED's editorial staff got together and put down some guidelines for TEDx organizers…"

I think so. It has the capacity to really take off. There have been quite a few projects that we've done recently that took off for themselves. All we have to do is give a few pats on the back and a little bit of advice here and there, but not much. Those things take off. Recently, some students at Middlebury College created a fake official welcoming committee for the Dalai Lama, and announced on behalf of the university that it was going to divest in anything related to war. We helped them a bit. They emailed us to ask how [the idea] seemed, and we gave them little pieces of advice about the press release. They had some legal questions. They wanted to know if they would be in big trouble, and we said no. So, they went and did it. It was a tremendous success. It got a ton of press. The university reacted in a really stupid way, and it all worked out. It got a lot of attention for the idea that universities can or should divest…"

"Mad about the boy", un LARP diferente
My so-called larp: learning to love in a world without men
Surviving a weekend of quadruple-crosses, motherhood, and emotional world building
"…The scenario is from Mad About the Boy, an all-female Nordic larp or live-action role-playing game. Generally speaking, larps move the events of role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons or Vampire: The Masquerade from the tabletop to campgrounds or hotels, with varying amounts of realism. In America, it’s stereotyped as a kind of joke: ask someone about larping, and they’ll describe costumed trolls and wizards knocking each other around with foam weapons (called boffers) or chanting spells in costume. Nordic larp, however, is more like being in a play. Developed in Norway, Denmark, and other Scandinavian countries, it’s focused on immersion and character development, dispensing with many of the gamelike elements of larping in favor of something reminiscent of theater improv. Its players are thrown into character for hours to days, and while there’s no script, they’re given scenarios that are meant to be taken seriously — from living out World War II as a civilian to experiencing the rise of AIDS in New York in the ‘80s. Now, with Mad About the Boy, it’s in the US for the first time…"

How NASA might build its very first warp drive
"…My early results suggested I had discovered something that was in the math all along," he recalled. "I suddenly realized that if you made the thickness of the negative vacuum energy ring larger — like shifting from a belt shape to a donut shape — and oscillate the warp bubble, you can greatly reduce the energy required — perhaps making the idea plausible." White had adjusted the shape of Alcubierre's ring which surrounded the spheroid from something that was a flat halo to something that was thicker and curvier.
He presented the results of his Alcubierre Drive rethink a year later at the 100 Year Starship conference in Atlanta where he highlighted his new optimization approaches — a new design that could significantly reduce the amount of exotic matter required. And in fact, White says that the warp drive could be powered by a mass that's even less than that of the Voyager 1 spacecraft.
That's a significant change in calculations to say the least. The reduction in mass from a Jupiter-sized planet to an object that weighs a mere 1,600 pounds has completely reset White's sense of plausibility — and NASA's…"

Killzone Intercept occurs during the events of Killzone 3 as the ISA evacuate Helghan. A small scout squad is called upon to stall a large group of approaching Helghasts that plan to cut off the ISA convoy from reaching the extraction point. Outnumbered, the squad takes on the task with hopes of getting everyone off the planet alive.
Director's note:
"This is another film project that was 2yrs in the making and only possible with unbelievable amounts of work and support from friends and family. It amazes me what can happen when a group of talented people are passionate about a project. On previous projects, we have never had any form of support from the actual game creators. Luckily, Guerrilla Games was kind enough to give feedback and recognition for a fan film project fueled by our love for the games. Other developers should take notes. Now, enjoy the film!"

Imagine if every person in Africa saw the "Africa for Norway" video and this was the only information they ever got about Norway. What would they think about Norway?
If we say Africa, what do you think about? Hunger, poverty, crime or AIDS? No wonder, because in fundraising campaigns and media that's mainly what you hear about.
The pictures we usually see in fundraisers are of poor African children. Hunger and poverty is ugly, and it calls for action. But while these images can engage people in the short term, we are concerned that many people simply give up because it seems like nothing is getting better. Africa should not just be something that people either give to, or give up on.
The truth is that there are many positive developments in African countries, and we want these to become known. We need to change the simplistic explanations of problems in Africa. We need to educate ourselves on the complex issues and get more focus on how western countries have a negative impact on Africa's development. If we want to address the problems the world is facing we need to do it based on knowledge and respect.

The roof falls away and the puppets are bathed in a blast of light from heaven, which seems to solve all their problems. I asked him if it was a personal symbol of something, like the Christian paraclete or the beginning of Genesis "Let there be light." He said he had never connected the two scenes in his mind, but he found strange echoes of things were always turning up in his work. Another time I pointed out to him that both The Muppet Movie and The Dark Crystal have torture scenes in them, one done for comedy (with Kermit and Mel Brooks) and the other darker and more disturbing. I asked if he wasn't a little bit into torture for some reason. He said "I hate torture. It's so upsetting just to think about it. I think I must have been tortured in a previous life…"

The occasion marked the first time that Dotokou had been on the island as an adult, and his experience is nothing short of harrowing. "WORLD PREMIERE EXTENDED PREVIEW OF J. J. ABRAMS' "STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS" TO DEBUT IN IMAX 3D ON DECEMBER 14th
THE FIRST 9-MINUTES FROM THE ANTICIPATED SEQUEL WILL BE RELEASED EXCLUSIVELY IN DIGITAL IMAX 3D THEATRES WORLDWIDE
HOLLYWOOD, CA (November 14, 2012) – Paramount Pictures will release the first 9 minutes from J.J. Abrams' eagerly-awaited "STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS" exclusively in IMAX 3D months prior to the film's official release in May 2013. This first-look at the movie will play in approximately 500 digital IMAX 3D theatres beginning December 14th.
"STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS," the sequel to Abrams' 2009 hit film that redefined the Star Trek universe for a new generation, marks the first time exclusive footage has played in IMAX 3D and only the third time a first-look will be released in IMAX.
"Our longtime partners J.J. Abrams, Bryan Burk and the Bad Robot team have really hit it out of the park – the footage is absolutely incredible," said Greg Foster, Chairman and President, IMAX Filmed Entertainment. "Their use of the IMAX® Camera and canvas is sure to impress current and future Star Trek fans alike, and we're thrilled to once again work with our friends at Paramount Pictures to offer this extended ‘first look' at this highly anticipated summer blockbuster."
To further the IMAX experience, "STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS" used IMAX cameras to capture several sequences. Exclusively in IMAX theaters, sequences filmed with the extremely high-resolution cameras will expand to fill more of the screen with unprecedented crispness and clarity, putting moviegoers right into the explosive action and vast scope of the film.
"STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS" is written by Damon Lindelof, Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci and directed by J.J. Abrams. Abrams is producing with Bryan Burk through Bad Robot Productions, along with Lindelof, Kurtzman and Orci."

"…The film centers around a team of astronauts headed out to explore one of Jupiter's moons. It appears to be composed almost entirely out of footage from stationary cameras positioned around the ship. We love the shot from the "nose camera" filming the crew straight down the barrel of the ship. It's all very 2001: A Space Odyssey.
-
SciTech
The US Navy wants great (rotating, detonating) balls of fire!
Looks to replace its gas turbine engines with rotating detonation versions.
"…Gas turbines operate on the Brayton cycle, which consists of three steps. First, a compressor raises the pressure of the incoming air. Then, fuel is injected and mixes with the air, then burns, heating everything up. Since the system is open—rather than in a closed cylinder—this process occurs at a nearly constant pressure. Finally, this hot pressurized gas expands through a nozzle to generate thrust, either for propulsion or to push a turbine and generate electricity.
The main limitation to performance is the combustion step. Like nearly every other type of burning experienced in day-to-day life, it is a deflagration, where the flame propagates at a subsonic speed.
A detonation is a flame where the reacting gases release so much energy so quickly that the burning mixture moves faster than the speed of sound, driving a shock wave…"

PC (13): ruido de ventiladores solucionado
-
MacPC
No sé. Veremos, más tarde.

Los cinco capitanes, en Star Trek London
Star Trek London Recap: The Five Captains
"…Avery Brooks spoke little about Star Trek and instead focused his answers on family, fatherhood and how his work has affected those personal roles for him. Scott Bakula was possibly the most easy going of all the captains; his talk felt like an intimate conversation in a bar despite the thousands of people around us. This was a direct contrast to William Shatner’s, whose classical training and unique personality shone out from the stage. His answers were long, divergent and always told a great story. Sir Patrick Stewart, the only local of the group, was eager to talk about his home country and past experiences while Kate Mulgrew was possibly the most welcoming of all, full of life and happy to discuss any topic — she even brought fans up on stage with her and made it clear how much she loved being among the people in the room. All five talks were fascinating and all five captains seemed genuinely happy to be on the stage, which was deeply refreshing to see. There were so many great moments across the five discussions that I wish it were possible to simply transcribe each of them here. Instead, I have condensed each down to some of my favorite moments that I can share with you…"

Cómo funciona Google Now
Google Now: behind the predictive future of search: How Google learned to un-fragment itself and create the next big thing
"…With Android 4.2, launching alongside the Nexus 4 and Nexus 10 on November 13th, Google has updated the feature with new information cards in new categories. And yet, the amount of engineering effort that makes Google Now possible is out of proportion to what it does — it's a massive, cross-company effort for what seems like a relatively small product. That difference is a clue. Google Now isn't important for what it does, well, "now," but the building blocks are there for a radically different kind of platform in the future.
We sat down with the teams responsible for some of the technology that went into Google Now to find out what makes it tick today and discover some hints about what it could be in the future…"

Possible Bubbles of Spacetime Curvature in the South Pacific (PDF)
"…We contend that all of the credible phenomena which Johansen described may be explained as being the observable consequences of a localized bubble of spacetime curvature. Many of his most incomprehensible statements (involving the geometry of the architecture, and variability of the location of the horizon) can therefore be said to have a unified underlying cause.
We propose a simplified example of such a geometry, and show using numerical computation that Johansen’s descriptions were, for the most part, not simply the ravings of a lunatic. Rather, they are the nontechnical observations of an intelligent man who did not understand how to describe what he was seeing. Conversely, it seems to us improbable that Johansen should have unwittingly given such a precise description of the consequences of spacetime curvature, if the details of this story were merely the dregs of some half remembered fever dream.
We calculate the type of matter which would be required to generate such exotic spacetime curvature. Unfortunately, we determine that the required matter is quite unphysical, and possess a nature which is entirely alien to all of the experiences of human science. Indeed, any civilization with mastery over such matter would be able to construct warp drives, cloaking devices, and other exotic geometries required to conveniently travel through the cosmos…"

When Mirror Neurons Go Bad
"…Mirror neurons think outside the skull by definition. They’re a kind of monkey-see-monkey-do circuit: they fire both when you do something, and when you see someone else doing the same thing. I drink a beer, certain mirrors fire. I watch you drink a beer; the same neurons fire, even though I’m not moving. It’s been suggested that mirror neurons are essential to developing a theory of mind, to empathy, to consciousness itself — Ramachandran’s all over them in that last context.
But sometimes mirror neurons go bad. Normally they just fire quietly to themselves when they see someone else doing something. In victims of echopraxia, however, those signals run right down the motor nerve to the muscles and force the body to follow suit. Echopraxiacs are compelled to mimic actions they see others performing…"

"…The Origin of Creatures is based on one of the most well-known tales about collaboration, the Tower of Babel. This tale is transformed and twisted and is set in an imaginary future, after the world is hit by a catastrophe. Among the remains of a devastated city lives that what is left of humanity. Human bodies are divided into separated parts of the body and are fused to special beings. Together, these creatures form a colony, they can only survive when collaborating. In the rubble of destroyed buildings they are trying to build a nest as large and as high as possible, so that the colony's queen gets enough sunlight to reproduce, but due to miscommunication this mission is doomed to fail…"
