Sleigh Ride

As part of our Christmas present, Beth and Mike took all of us on a sleigh ride at Park City Mountain Resort.  It was a blast.  They have these huge beautiful horses that come pick you up and take you to this great lodge in the mountains.  There you have dinner together and there was a band playing.  We loved it and the kids loved it.

Our family is huge.

We're in love.

5 Years

We celebrated our 5 year wedding anniversary on December 26th.  We spent the day skiing at Snowbasin with Spencer (he's our ski buddy) and then had a fun dinner at Bambara in SLC.  It was a calm day and definitely nice to focus on just the two of us in the midst of the crazy holiday season.  Here's to many more years with greatest guy I know.

Christmas Eve

We always spend Christmas Eve at the Johnston's and Christmas Day at the Young's.

As usual, Beth pulled out all of the stops this year for Christmas.  We had a delicious meal, talked about the nativity, the kids sang and danced to the '12 Days of Christmas', and then opened presents.

Easton wears size 15 shoes.  Oliver wears 8.5.

For Christmas we surprised my parents with a getaway to the Red Mountain Spa in St. George.  My mom has always wanted to go there.  I wrapped all of the info up in a box and here they are opening it.

On Christmas morning we woke up early, exchanged gifts, and went to church.  After church we went on a bike ride with the bikes that Santa brought us and then we headed to the Young's for a delicious Christmas dinner.

Here are all of the Youngs on Christmas Day.

Young Subaru

The new Young Subaru dealership has really taken off.  We spent some time up at Snowbasin in December filming a new commercial for the dealership.  It was a little torturous having to work and not being able to ski.

Samuel Edward Young

Little Sam Young (the 5th!!!) was born on December 11th.  While Megan and Bass were at the hospital we Ellie stayed at our house.  She is hilarious.  (Sidenote:  I happened to be at Bass & Megs house when they broke the news to Grandpa Sam that they named their baby after him.  He started screaming and jumping up and down, it was one of the cutest things I have ever seen.)

Grandpa Sam - UADA Hall of Fame.

Oliver's great grandfather, Jack Olsen, and his grandfather, Sam Young, are being inducted into the Utah International Auto Expo Hall of Fame on January 13th.  Sam had me take his photo and help him write his bio for the newspaper and his plaque.  Here it is:

Samuel D. Young III began his life in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  After attending Michigan State University, Sam had dreams of becoming an Air Force Pilot, so he enlisted in the US Air Force.  His military service serendipitously had him transferred to Hill Air Force Base in Northern Utah, where he later met his wife, Bertie Olsen.  They married in 1951 and proceeded to have six wonderful children over the next 15 years.

Sam began his career working as a bookkeeper for his father-in-law, Seldon Jack Olsen, in 1952 at Olsen Chevrolet in Layton, Utah.  In 1952 all bookkeeping was done manually and Sam spent countless hours trying to get all the ledgers, books, and accounting numbers to match to the penny.  His family remembers him bringing papers, books, and calculators home many times, where he worked in their living room for hours balancing the books.  Sam continued to work hard and worked his way up the ranks focusing on the accounting department and fixed operations.  One of his most significant business ventures that helped propel the growth of Olsen Chevrolet was Sam’s foresight in the purchase of 16 acres in Layton that fueled the new building and began the future expansion of the Olsen/Young automotive operation.  Meanwhile, Kent Murdock, his brother in law came into the Olsen family business where they enjoyed many years of working together as a team.

On August 15, 1977 Sam and Kent purchased the business from their Father-in-law and became partners, Co-Dealer and Co-owners in Olsen Chevrolet where they both built a very successful and prosperous family business. Sam was responsible for the Office, Fixed Operations, and the Finance Department, while Kent headed up the New and Used Sales Departments.  This model served them well for many years.  Both Sam and Kent had several of their children work in the business and they have enjoyed the many family dynamics that come with a family operated business.  Sam Young (Young Chevrolet) and Kent Murdock (Murdock Chevrolet) have both grown their respective family businesses far beyond the original Chevrolet store in Layton, operating multiple locations and many franchises.

Sam served in many civic and church organizations.  He was the Rotary President, the Chamber President, Utah Automobile Dealers Association President, Commodore of the Lake Powel Yacht Club, Captain in the Coast Guard Auxiliary, and was a Scout Master for many years.  Even to this day older men in their 50’s claim he was the best Scout Master ever.

Sam has long enjoyed the growth of his automobile and family business.  He loves being with his family in the business environment and has transferred much of his business intuition and sense to his children.  His prized love is the love of his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Uncle Oliver and Aunt Carly's 1st Annual Christmas Party

On December 1st there was a huge wind storm in Davis County.  We woke up and our neighbor's barn had been blown into our backyard.  The wind knocked over more than 600 trees at Oakridge Country Club, and a lot of our neighbors were missing fences, roofs, trampolines, grills, trees, patio furniture and anything else you could think of.  It was a disaster.  We were lucky and only lost a bit of facia on the front of our home, but I will never forget the sight of my curtains blowing in the wind even though my windows were closed.  There was so much destruction that our power was out for 24 hours (some people didn't have power for up to 4 days!).

December 1st was also the day we planned our first annual nieces and nephews Christmas Party.  Luckily my Mom's power came back on around 4pm, so we moved the party to her house.  There were a lot of complications and it wasn't as grand as I had planned, but we partied on and we had fun.  We made elf hats, decorated cookies, and visited with Santa.  Just as we were finishing up, the power went out again... so we finished up by flashlight.

Canon and Santa (Nonny).

Ellie sat on Santa's lap 5 times.  She loves him.
