Alex turned 4 the first week of Februay. It was a three day celebration as he opened he played soccer, opened his presents and had a special dinner with our family on his birthday, celebrated with his classmate, Abby, the next day at her gymnastics birthday party, and then had celebrated with our extended family the third day! Grandma Carole worked her tail off to make a fantastic Superman cake and the family celebrated with Alex as he proclaimed that he really was turning 6 (so that he could be old enough to join Y-Tribes with Sammy and go camping with he and Daddy). He is finally beginning to admit that he is four most of the time, but it is pretty funny to see people's reactions when they ask him how old he is and hear him reply "6".
Despite "only" being 4, he has grown so much in the last year. Every day he says something that causes Joe and I to raise our eyebrows. He also is now enjoying playing soccer, playing in the snow, riding a bike, and trying almost everything that his big brother does. And of course, he still has his huge signature smile. He is certainly growing up! Click below to view his b-day pics.

Sammy began asking for a pirate-themed birthday party months ago when he saw a picture of the candied-treasure chest cake that he wanted. Mom came up the night before the party to help me with the piping and thankfully, it lived up to Sammy's expectations. I considered it a success when his friend, Thomas said that it didn't really look like a cake. I asked him what it looked like and he said, matter-of-factly, "a treasure chest." Thanks, mom! Can't wait for you to help with Alex's Superman cake! :)
The party consisted of 14 boys. Yes, it seemed like a crazy idea, and believe me, I was a little bit nervous, but it all worked out. Aunt Terri stayed to take care of Logan and a good friend, Sondra, was also brave enough to stick around and help with the party (I think her bravery comes from having 3 boys of her own!). The boys - 7 from Sam's kindergarten class, two close friends from pre-school, cousin Theo, Sondra's other two boys (both about the same age as Theo and Alex), Sam and Alex - had a ball getting 2 1/2 hours to play together (remember, there is no recess or play time in 1/2 day kindergarten). Between pizza, cake & ice cream, a treasure hunt, and opening a ridiculous number of presents (apparently everyone is better than I am at buying gifts ahead of time or didn't believe me when I told them he would be just as happy if they all chipped in a couple of bucks and bought him one thing) - the time flew for them.
No one was ready to go when their parents arrived, but Joe and I were pooped. We were glad that everyone seemed to enjoy the party, but as the last couple of boys were leaving, I turned to Joe and told him - for time first (and LAST) time EVER - that three boys really seemed managable! I guess it is a really good thing that I grew up a tom-boy and didn't dream of having princess parties with my little girls... that would be a very different party!
