Our post-expedition to Centre for Persons with Early Stage Dementia and Younger Onset Dementia

On Wednesday 31 March 2010, one of the post expedition programmes was a visit to the New Horizon Centre for early dementia seniors in Bukit Batok. Daniel, Georgiana, Reynard, Ka Ming, Jing Lin, Jolie, Chek and Valerie spent 3 hours playing table games with about 25 seniors. The visit started with a briefing by the nurse manager, Ms Mary Lim, on what dementia is and on caregiver stress.

At the debrief, we learnt the following:
1. the seniors can be repetitive
2. the seniors can be humourous
3. the seniors can be fierce too :)

The expedition progamme has come full circle from orphanage children to dementia senior citizens. One cannot help but walk away feeling there is a whole lot more to be done ...

Reflection #2 by Ms Lai

I had read all your reflections on the YEP forms. Each of you had become more "Cambodian" that you let your guard down and wrote from the heart :) The reflections were very personal and touching in flavour.

Then I realised that the most significant part of the expedition to me was that I brought 18x more cheer and love in Cambodia through you all ! I feel truly blessed ! Mr Ben and I would not have been able to reach out to so many HVPV children, villagers, orphanage children, and OHF staff with a smile or a soap. With the exception of Srey Nich, I wished I had touched each HVPV child personally... But through you all I did 18x more!

My biggest regret was that I should have started earlier in bringing more students on YEP expeditions. Now that I'm 28+++ years old, the spirit is willing but the flesh is not. I will continue to do my part in Singapore.

It is my prayer that you all will stay healthy and continue to magnify the giving to society. Spread your smile to where your heart brings you.

Reflection #2: Give of yourself

"You give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give"
some say the above quote is credited to Pierre Corneille but others Kahlil Gibran.

This is my second time going back to Hope Village Prey Veng (HVPV). What surprised me most was how comfortable I actually felt in HVPV. My last trip to HVPV was in Sept. 2007 almost 2 and a half years ago. But when I got there on 8 Mar, it felt like it was only yesterday that I left. I was thrilled to recognise the children there and it gave me much happiness to see how they have grown! Although they are taller and more matured now, all the children were just the way they were when I left them in 2007. They are still, so full of joy. We may think we have everything in Singapore but I am convinced they are richer than any Singaporean that was on the YEP with me.

Indeed, there is a difference between giving our possessions (like money) in the name of charity and actually giving of ourselves. By giving up my time and effort to this trip, I have gained so much more. Before this trip, I thought the organisation and planning of the trip would be plain-sailing and easy since it is my second time in HVPV. I suppose I was plain foolish to think that way. In fact as it turned out, the planning and organisation of this YEP was just as time-draining and energy-sapping as the first. I realised each YEP is different. This time round, the work was more physical. We were exposed to more risks (insect bites, cuts, scratches, heat exhaustion, etc) this time. However, all these risks were mitigated because we worked as a team. We shared our repellents, our water, our food, and we even shared our first-aid knowledge. In the end, everyone benefited in this giving of ourselves to the commuity at the village and the orphans at HVPV.

We all grew in our own ways seeing how our contributions brought a smile to the Cambodians. For once, we could truly smile back from the bottom of our hearts. And know that we made a difference even if the difference might be a small one.

Reflection #1: Put love into giving

Mother Teresa once said:
"It's not how much we give, but much love we put into giving"

It's been such a joy to have led a Youth Expedition Project (YEP) group to Cambodia. I have so many things to be grateful for. On reflection, I want to say we are so blessed. Firstly, our efforts and time spent in pre-expedition activities and preparation for the trip were all worth it. The pre-expedition activities provided an opportunity for the YEP groups to bond. We got to know each other better. We worked together for the various tasks that were assigned with much dedication and commitment. Then the pre-trip preparation, which gave everyone a good idea of what to expect in Cambodia. I believe that minimised the no. of cuts and insect bites we got. Although some of us did get a bit more bites than the rest :)

Secondly, our enthusiasm displayed at house building. I was heartened by the never-say-die attitude we displayed. Although we were clearly out of our comfort zone, but we shone because we persisted. Inspite of the heat, we continued in our shaving (of bamboo), nailing and sawing. It was hot, it was dusty, it was uncomfortable but none of us complained and everyone carried on with a smile. We were devoted and we shown we wanted to do our bit no matter how small.

Thirdly, our resilience. I was impressed by how we would not give in to fatigue. I know the pace was quick... waking up so early and not rest till the sun is down. And we did it 6 days in a row. And even when some of us were unwell, you did not feel that you were entitled to rest until the task is complete. Thankfully, we got well quick. And this is all thanks to the care and concern you have shown each other. We did not complain when we have to do more because one of us is down. But instead we assure those of us who were unwell to rest well and not to worry about the tasks at hand.

Finally, our love for the less-fortunate. This was evident from the various activities we completed in Hope Village Prey Veng (HVPV). You brought alive the quotation by Mother Teresa. You brought much joy and laughter to the orphans. You went about your assigned tasks with so much love and dedication. Because of the love we put into giving, we received much much more in return.

Reflection by Ms Lai

I would like to begin by reflecting on my 18 children. "Every child is unique". And, this is how I'd describe each of you (in the expedition team).

1. Esther: My considerate daughter. Willing to take the train home so taxi uncle could earn a higher fare. Also the pee commander.
2. Fel: My never-say-die daughter. No amount of pooping will flush her spirit down!
3. Georgiana: My undercover FBI daughter. Probes and digs information with flair. And does she shop!
4. Hanna: My realistic daughter who realised very early that the carpenters could have built the house faster without us.
5. HW: My task-oriented daughter. A natural organiser.
6. Jasmine: My shutter-bug daughter. Cheerful always. Am pleased she shared a tender moment with R.
7. Jolie: My compassionate daughter. Really knows how to care for a friend.
8. JL: My teaser daughter. Able to laugh at others and at herself.
9. PY: My reflective daughter. Hope you will lead an expedition to HVPV someday.
10. Sam: My live-wire daughter. Free spirited and enthusiastic always.
11. Val: My fashion-model daughter. But puts in as tough a day's work as any boy.
12. Yvonne: My conscientious daughter. First one to hand in the reflection forms.
13. Chek: My comforting son. Always a kind word when I cried on leaving HVPV and when I got sea sick.
14. Daniel: My vain and shy son. Worried about scarring on his legs. A married man now after a brief closed-door moment with his wife.
15. JW: My baby Angkor son. Every man can be a baby when given glucose and tenderness. First to marry.
16. KM: My joker son. His come-what-may attitude will see him far.
17. Rey: My absent-minded son. Should have married him off first to be taken care of by Cambodian wife ... or by J.
18. ZY: My very responsible son. Gives me no headaches. Leading quietly and no glory-seeker.

Welcome Home!

Dear all,
Welcome Home! Trust that all of you have a good rest since arriving home. I know I did and I needed a couple of days to 'recover'. And the cooler weather in Singapore certainly helped.

I would like to take this opportunity to announce the following:

1. Clean up at OHF HQ on 27 Mar
We just received notification from OHF and the clean-up is now cancelled as there is not a need to.
We have notified the respective team leaders - Ka Ming and Daniel

2. Photos of the expedition
Jasmine has picked up a DVD containing the photos that I have taken during the expedition. Include in the disc also are photos taken on 10 Jan when we had our pre-expedition activities. Jasmine and her group will organise the compilation and distribution of the photos taken by us.

3. Notice Board
The groups led by Samantha and ZhengYi are responsible for the notice board. Please liaise with Jasmine and prepare to have photos printed for the notice board. We will let you know which 'space' in SB we will be using for our notice board.

4. Group Blogs/Individual postings
We would like each and everyone of you to make your individual posts on your group blogs. Following are a list of questions you may want to use to guide your reflections:
a. Based on your experience in the many activities we organised in Cambodia, what would be a highlight(s) for you? Why? Please elaborate.
b. Were there learning points during your trip? What have you learnt? About yourself, your fellow expedition mate, Cambodia, orphans, etc.
c. The theme of this expedition was 'Challenge your perspectives". Did this happen? Did you have a new insight? Or do you now have a new perspective?
d. Call to action. Do you feel you have contributed at the expedition? Would there be future expeditions for you? What are your plans (related to community service). What does the future hold for you?

5. Our official blog
Ms Lai and myself will be posting on the blog our own reflections. Please look out for it. I will also be updating the blog with photos.

Cheers!
Ben Cho

E-Registration at MFA website + final list

Dear all,
I have completed all the necessary registration for everyone. You would have received a SMS from Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA). This SMS was sent out after I have completed the e-registration at MFA website.
I have also updated SP's SAS of the trip details. SP management is able to keep track of the expedition through the details that I have provided to the SAS.
So, in a nutshell... we are ready to go.

Another important note I would like to add... we have received notification from Ms Tiffany Aw that she will not be able to join us on the expedition. Due to medical reasons, she is withdrawing from the expedition. It is unfortunate but we wish her well and pray for her quick recovery. This would mean that our final list will consist of 2 lecturers & 18 students.

Reflection Questions for your group blog

Dear all,
Apolgies for the lateness in this.
By now most of you, except for a couple of you, would have completed your exams. You can now start your preparation for Operation Cambodia in ernest.
You would remember that I have asked you to post your answers to any one or more of the questions below at your group blog. I would like everyone to answer so this is not a group post!
Reflection questions are:
• Going to Cambodia, and on a personal level, what do you hope to achieve? (Give at least three different objectives)
• On my own, have I made a concerted effort to find out more about Cambodia? Its geography, history, culture, politics, economy? What can I do about it?
• What are your fears going on this trip? Elaborate.
• Do you have any suggestions?
I look forward to reading your individual posts :)

IMPORTANT: Pre-departure note

Dear students,
I hope you guys and gals are coping ok with examination stress. Do hang in there. You have a few more days left.
I believe you are as excited as me with our trip to Cambodia.
Following are some updates I would like you to take note of:
1. Chek and Valerie
Ms Lai and myself met with Chek and Valerie on 18 Feb right after our pre-departure briefing. We had a good discussion and we were able to understand each other better. For the benefit of the group, Chek and Valerie will address the group individually on 8 Mar evening at Hope Village Prey Veng. More details will be given then.
2. US dollars
Please remember to change some Singapore dollars into USD before leaving for Cambodia. As mentioned before, USD is accepted in most parts of Cambodia. The recommended amount varies (depending on how much shopping you will be doing). I figure US$100 should be sufficient if you are not into shopping. But if you are an average shopper, US$200 is preferred.
3. Our day of departure - 7 Mar 2010 Sunday
3a. Waking up
Please note the gathering time at Changi Airport Terminal 1 JetStar Counter is 03:45am on 7 Mar Sunday morning. If you think you have trouble waking up, please ensure you enrolled someone to wake you. Remember, the late fine applies.
3b. Food and water
We may not be able to bring water past the gate (at the airport), but I would suggest you bring an empty bottle and top it up with drinking water inside the gate. I understand that food and drinks can be a little expensive on board the Jet Star plane.
Also, do note that we will only be having our breakfast (in Cambodia) at about 9am local time which is 10am Singapore time. I would suggest that you pack some snacks (like energy bar) in your back pack. Of course you can order food on the plane but this will be at your own cost. Alternatively, you can eat a big meal at Changi before boarding the plane.
4. Zheng Yi's email related to the board games
Please note Zheng Yi's email and make sure you collect the board games as soon as possible. Your cooperation in this is much appreciated.

See you on 7 Mar at 03:45am :)

Penalty for latecomers

Dear all,
As discussed at our meeting on 9 Jan 2010, please note the 'penalty' for late comers:
For every minute that you are late, USD1 will be levied on late comers. Reference will be the digital clock on Mr. Cho's iphone.
Please note that the penalty is non-negotiable and there is no cap to it.
The money pooled (from late-comers) will go towards providing food/drinks for the entire YEP group. No refund will be given. Any excess (at the end of the trip) will be donated to OHF.

Change to our flight schedule

Dear all,

We have just spoken to our air-ticketing agent. We have been informed that she has difficulties booking the return leg of our flights home (to Singapore) on 17 Mar 2010. That flight on 17th Mar is fully booked.

However, she has suggested that we 'shift' our travel dates by 1 day. That is, moving it from 6th to 17th Mar to from 7th to 18th Mar 2010. Two reasons for this:
1. Availability of seats on 7th and 18th Mar.
2. Even lower fares on those dates (on SilkAir).

Please let me know if the above change to our schedule is acceptable to you by tomorrow 14 Jan 12noon.

You may bring your research notes with you to the interview.

Let us take you through our selection criteria:
(not in any order of importance)
a. Interview

Operation Cambodia 2007

Operation Cambodia 2007 concluded successfully in Sept. 2007.

In all, a total of 17 students accompanied by 2 lecturers were in Cambodia from 25 Aug to 5 Sept 2007. During that time, Operation Cambodia 2007 was involved in community service at 3 orphanages. In particular, the group spent a week teaching English in an orphanage in Prey Veng town. The orphanage - Hope Village, was set up and managed by a non-profit organisation - Operation Hope Foundation (OHF) in Singapore.

Life at Hope Village was a simple one compared to Singapore. Our perspectives were certainly challenged! See the photo album for a peek into Operation Cambodia 2007:
