Everyday life

Getting used to being a family of 6 has been quite the transition.  Luckily, Kjetil, and all the other fathers of Norway, get 10 days off from work after a baby is born.  He helped me manage the kids and was always willing to take them outside.  Most days I would stay inside with Emily because it is still relatively cold out but we all ventured down one particular day to pick up Nathan from barnehagen when the sun was shining.  And when the sun is shining - we ALWAYS stop and play!
Especially if the sun is shining and pappa is with us! ;)

There were a lot of days that little Joseph stayed behind with me and Emily so that the older two could play longer or do activities that he isn't quite capable of (like swimming).  But - while the cats are away, the cute little mice will play!
Although, Emily prefers not to be referred to as a mouse.
A sweet girl, a cutie, baby girl, beauty queen, Emi-M - all of these names are acceptable but never mouse.  Never.
We tend to stick just call her cutie since that is what she is!

Lydia has had the "hardest" time with the transition.  All of the children have handled it well but all of them have had their individual struggles.  Kjetil made sure to take her out on a few daddy-daughter dates where she was in focus.  It helped a little and even though things have been hard for her, she LOVES baby Emily (never just Emily but baby Emily).  She is constantly asking if Emily is sleeping, she tells me that Emily is crying, she helps me find diapers and wipes and she loves to hold Emily.  All in all, she is handling it well but it is never easy to adjust to a new phase in life.
Joseph is my "nursing buddy".  If I sit down to nurse, he comes running.  Typically, he is trying to crawl into my lap, dive off the back of the couch or roll all over Emily but occasionally he finds a book and examines his toes.
Then he tries to read the book to himself.
Which leads to laughter and lots of babbling.  He can be a lighthearted boy with a constant smile on his face.  He can entertain himself (if he feels like it) and he can be a sweet little sidekick.
But most of the time...
He is a mischievous little guy who LOVES to climb!  If I sit down to nurse and he gets tired of rolling all over Emily and I, he starts pushing chairs around and climbing as high as he can go.  I tried putting the chairs on the table but when he managed to literally shatter one of the chairs by pulling it off, I stopped that practice and now I just clear off all dangerous objects!

Ahhhh, everyday life is just so exciting around these parts ;)

Get movin'

Lets be honest - having a newborn in the family leads to A LOT of time inside.  Babies require so much attention but when there are other kids in the family, there has to be a healthy balance of "baby focus" and "normal life".  While Kjetil was home, we made sure to alternate who would be holding Emily and who would be playing with the other children.

On one particular day, we went to one of our favorite parks with Chelsea and her daughter.
We enjoyed the beautiful sunlight, the fresh air and the company of little friends.
Nathan taught Lily how to play with tractors...
and he might have even let her play with a time or two!  ;)
Lydia worked on her climbing skills
(which is pretty important since her joints are so loose)

And Joseph worked on mastering the slide.

He also worked on being the cutest little "big" brother that he could possibly be.
He nailed it.
Another clear day, we wandered down the street and played for a short time before heading back home to nurse little Emily.  A little bit of play is better than none at all.
Kjetil was able to do more exciting activities with the kids since he didn't have to return home to nurse Emily every few hours.  One Saturday (while Hilde was visiting), they headed over to a larger lake here in Stavanger to feed the birds.

Lucky for them, Farmor and Farfar decided to join in on the fun and they spent the morning walking, talking, running, playing and even got to eat their lunches outside.
 Fun, fun, fun!

Just the girls

We got a wonderful visit from Kjetil's sister just a few days after Emily was born.
Emily was more than thrilled about meeting her Tante Hilde and snuggled up to her as quickly as possible.  Hilde LOVES children and we are so grateful every time she comes to visit.
We also made sure to visit Oldemor when little Emily was just over a week old.
Emily slept in her arms the entire evening - a safe and warm place to be!
Oldemor loved talking to her and holding her.
And Emily loved every single moment of it!
Being the newest girl in the Olsen family has its benefits -
lots of love, lots of snuggles, lots of attention and lots of sleeping!

Sleepy

Most of our days are spent like this -
cuddled up and fast asleep.
Nathan loves to snuggle with Emily in the mornings and it appears that Emily likes it as well.
He really is such a good big brother!
Emily is a WONDERFUL sleeper!
And there is nothing better than a sleeping baby.
Except for a baby that puckers up as soon as she wakes up!
Oh, how we love that little face!
