Feathergirls Finish #2, 'Oh, Oh, Ohiostars' quilt!

Finished! The Feathergirls finished their second Feathergirls quilts!

When Hubertine (click) and I got our Featherweight sewing machines a few years ago, we decided to work together as The Feathergirls and make quilts that we make (at least patch) on our Featherweight sewing machines, quilts that are inspired by old, antique quilts and that are not too difficult to make, because we want to make these quilts next to other quilts we are making and we just want to have fun with our Featherweight machines.

So for this second Feathergirls quilt, this is my finished ‘Oh, Oh, Ohio Stars’ quilt:

Quilt stats:

Size:  140 cm x 182 cm  / 55“ x 72“
Machine pieced, hand quilted
Fabrics and batting: 100% cotton

Hubertine and I wrote about these quilts in previous posts, if you click on the Ohio Stars label on the right of this blog, you can find my previous posts.

The first Feathergirl quilt I finished you can find in this (click) blogpost.

And have a look at Hubertine’s blog  (click) for all the information on her gorgeous blue and white Churndash quilt!

And yes, now that these are finished we will continue with our third Feathergirl quilts!

This time we have chosen a different approach. Contrary to our previous quilts, this time we will work with a theme.
One thing will not change though, we will not know what the other Feathergirl is making until we meet again as Feathergirls and reveal the start of our new quilts to each other!
The theme for our third Feathergirl quilts will be:

S  * C * R * A * P * S    !!

Can’t wait to get started!

Feathergirls 2.0, high time for an update!

Has it really been this long?! It must be, the last Feathergirls blogpost is from July 14 of last year, so it is high time for an update.

You may remember Hubertine and I finished our first Feathergirls quilts last year and showed them here (Hubertine, click) and here (mine, click).

And we already started our new Feathergirls quilts (Feathergirls 2.0, so to speak) , I blogged about my new Feathergirls project here(click) and here (click) and Hubertine blogged about hers here (click)and here (click).

Since we felt it was high time for an update Hubertine and I got together for a Feathergirl’s afternoon, we had planned to do some sewing….
But since it had been a while since we saw each other we wound up just chatting the afternoon away, but we did make some nice pictures in her new wonderful, bright en cozy sewingroom
J !

Anyway this is where I am at, all Ohio Star blocks finished, nicely sorted out in little piles, I found I made two too many, they may come in handy later on with the label, we’ll see.

On my designwall they looked like this

Since my first Feathergirls quilt (the Jacob’s Ladder quilt) was already a quilt with straight quiltblocks I decided to turn my Ohio Stars blocks and place them on point, so now I have this:

How to proceed from here? I have a large piece of a dark fabric that I really wanted to use and it is perfect for this project, to use as alternate blocks for the light and colourful Ohio Star block:

So that is what I will do!

You can have a look here (click) at Hubertine’s blog for her Feathergirls 2.0 update.

Promise a next update will not take this long!

Feathergirls update, a bee is born and a Summer Fair

Several things to talk about in this blogpost:

First an update of the second Feathergirls quilt I am working on, remember the Ohio Stars? Well I made a few more, here they all are:

Head over to fellow Feathergirl Hubertine (click) to have a look at her progress on her second Feathergirl quilt.
Then on to something completely different:
Over a year ago I received an email from an English quilter who had moved to The Hague, had seen my blog and asked me if I knew any English speaking quilters in The Hague. I suggested we meet, we exchanged details and it turned out Emma lived in my area, only a 5 minutes’ walk from my house. Since then Emma and I meet regularly for a chat and to quilt.
Two months ago I went on holiday and on the plane to Houston I met Tanja who is Dutch but who had moved to Houston over 20 years ago. Talking to each other we found out she lived near our hotel so we met for lunch one day, with the husbands.
She told me she had a Dutch friend Agatha, who had lived in Houston for years, but had moved back to The Hague and was also a quilter. She gave me her details and back from holiday I got in touch with Agatha…… and guess what…. she lives a few doors away from Emma!

Agatha regularly meets with another quilter, Marleen, who lives around the corner from her… turns out we all live within walking distance of each other!
So last week I invited the ladies around to my house. We enjoyed it so much it will become a regular fixture in our agenda’s: a bee is born!

And then last Saturday there was the Summer Fair of De Quilthoeve. As usual, everything looked perfect! And the weather gods were kind. I spent a few wonderful hours there looking at all the booths with fabrics, cross stitch projects, brocante, jewelry, cakes etc. and meeting with other quilters.
Here is an impression

I guess for many of you it will be time to go on vacation now, we already had ours, so we are staying at home this summer, but for those of you who are still going: have a great time everyone!

A quilty update... at last

At last a quilty update. I wasn’t able to blog about quilty things recently because all I was doing was quilting my Jacob’s Ladder. I quilted and I quilted and I quilted……

but I wanted it finished because I was afraid that if I would start on other projects as well I would leave it laying around for too long… luckily I was able to spend another lovely day at Karin’s B&B Quilt Café last Wednesday and like before I was able to do a lot of work on it.

I planned on finishing it that day, but I got a bit distracted by the projects of the other ladies and of Karin herself, so I did not finish it during the day but I did in the evening time at home. So YESSSS  I finished quilting my Jacob’s Ladder!

Next thing is the binding (which I still have to find) and the label and once that is done I will show you more of this quilt.

With bee night at my house last week I used the Texas cookie cutter Tammy gave me when I met her in Houston in April. It was years since I made cookies, but this evening we were able to eat a bit of Texas.

Soooo, with the Jacob’s Ladder quilted I have time to go back to other projects: first of all the second Feathergirls quilt I am making. Remember, fellow Feathergirl Hubertine and I decided on our second Feathergirl project, I introduced mine here and Hubertine introduced hers here, so now I had time to work on this again, and this is where I am now.

And these fabrics are next in line to become Ohio Star blocks:

Of course I am making this project on my Featherweight, but I also want to have a project I can do by hand this summer, so I will have to delve into my WIP boxes to decide which one it will be.

This one?

This one?

Or this one?

Decisions, decisions…….

Enjoy your day!

Feathergirls 2.0

A few blogposts ago I wrote about oiling my black Featherweight, The Duchess,  and starting a new Feathergirls project together with fellow Feathergirl Hubertine.

The plan is the same as our first Feathergirls project: a traditional quilt, antique style, not difficult so it will not take up too much time (so many other projects fighting for our attention) and – at least the top – has to be made on our Featherweight machines.

So – like last time – we each planned what we wanted to do and recently we got together at Hubertine’s for ‘the big reveal’, this is what I plan to make, Ohio Stars!

I love this simple block and this is a good opportunity to make a quilt with Ohio Stars. My blocks will be 6” x 6” finished.

I have no idea how these blocks eventually will become a quilt top but I am sure that will come to me as I progress.

Hubertine’s plan for her second Feathergirls quilt is here, on her blog.

My first Feathergirls project is not finished yet, I am still hand quilting my Jacob’s Ladder and had a great opportunity to do a lot of that last Wednesday during mine (and Hubertine’s) first visit to Karen’s Quilt Café at her beautiful B&B.
It was a gorgeous spring morning with bright blue skies. This was the view of the Hertogshoeve B&B, driving into Rijpwetering.
We were met by Karen with coffee and homemade cakes and had a lovely time with all the ladies there….. and the chickens who walked around the building.

Karen made lunch of leek soup and a smoked chicken breast sandwich, yum!
I managed to get a lot of quilting done, without the usual interruptions you get at home.

Slowly but steadily the quilting is progressing, hopefully I will get some time this week to do more!
