Coble Boat Races North Fife

Coble Races North Fife, An annual event usually twinned with the Newburgh Highland Games, alas this year they were cancelled due to the condition of the ground. This year it was lower key, no aeroplane aerobatics, no police, no candy floss, no nonsense, just boating. In my memory one of the best.

s

Junior races line up for the shotgun start.

Away the leaders go.

No 1 pulling ahead.by a gnats whisker.

Rounding the marker boat.

In order.

Boat No 1 well away in the next heat.

 Pulling to the marker boat.

Heading for a collision No2 heading for the turn, No 3 on the way back.

Phew, just made it.

No 2 again mixing it with another boat.

The boys in No 2 made many attempts to round the marker boat in a dramatic change of the weather conditions. The wind veered to the East from the South blowing hard on the incoming tide, made for very swelling and choppy water.

A line is attached and a free ride back.

A much applauded return, we all know it's the taking part that counts.

Dark Angle Shades Moth North Fife

Dark Angle Shades moth found yesterday evening outside on my kitchen window. Freshly emerged this female's wings had not fully inflated. The outside temperature was 4c. I am surprised to see her at this time of the year, she readily drank guava juice from soaked tissue paper and in the morning on placing outside, quivered a short while and took off. Completely out of season and unlikely to find a mate., most likely to be eaten by a hungry bird. Such is life.

North Fife garden July 15th

Blackcurrants, nearly ripe, the multitude of birds haven't started on them yet. They're still working away on the redcurrants, whole families of blackbirds, sometime thrushes, robins and garden warblers. I'm surprised by the last two.

Wasp, one of many busy on the cotoneaster along with the odd bumblebee today inbetween showers at Flisk North Fife.

Wind Turbines

Do you see the propellers? Here just around the corner travelling south on the M6 by the lake district wind turbines come into view. A really heartening site. Energy conversion of benefit.
There are proposed sites in Fife and existing in North and South Scotland. It's true they can be seen to despoil natural habitats but that's what we humans do, out of necessity and hopefully a more balanced pragmatic approach.

Almost surreal, like sculptures these propeller driven wind turbines look incongruous yet no different to the motorway.

Wild Geese North Fife.

Wild Geese North Fife. By the time I have stopped the car, got out and readied the camera these shy birds are waddling away in haste. Their time here is now short as they await southerly winds to carry them to summer quarters in the Arctic. They arrive in the early winter, multiple V shaped skeins honking away to each other as they circle overhead.

The Man Who Planted Trees. Falkland, North Fife.

The Man Who Planted Trees. Falkland,North Fife. By PUPPET STATE THEATRE COMPANY. The story is fictional but full of truth, written by Jean Giono is also known as "The Man Who Planted Hope and Reaped Happiness". In 1957 Giono wrote, "I Wrote this story to make people love trees, or more precisely to make people love planting trees. Of all my stories it is one of the ones of which I am most proud. It has never earned me a penny and for that reason it accomplished the very purpose for which it was written."
But this much more than a story about forestry: it is a wonderful parable of life - the tale of a human being who saw a need and decided not to ignore it but "put things to right".
Maybe we all have a supply of acorns hidden away somewhere.....
