I had a birthday

We ate and laughed. Lot's of eating and laughing.

Here's me laughing at the fact that Wes could not find the birthday candles, but ingenuitively used tea lights instead. Actually, a bit more classy if you ask me!

And one of my favorite people, Anthony had a good time laughing at David. And we smiled at the kids. And the kids smiled at us.And we smiled some more!

Pilar & John

John and Pilar had an amazing wedding. One of my favorite parts of the wedding was watching the two of them laugh together. It was very sweet.

A bunch of my friend met my Uncle John when he showed up at our engagement party, entering the party saying, "I brought the mojitos!". So it was very appropriate that at their wedding, John and Pilar both served their favorite drinks.

Here are Wes and Dad enjoying some.
And John and Pilar toasting after the ceremony with their first drink of the night.
And my sexy cousins...
The most stunning part of this wedding was the flowers. Pilar has great taste! Check out these table settings! I've never seen so many flowers in one room!

And little boxes of Fleur de Cocoa chocolates for each of us!My pictures don't do the flowers and decor justice, but they were amazing!

Thanks to John and Pilar for including us in their celebration!

Garden Beds

I've been wanting to expand my garden for a while now, but not quite sure how to do it. I tried to dig in the back a bit, but the ground is very hard and full of rocks and roots. I was inspired when I saw Wendy & Jeff's garden beds, that of course you can create raised beds, and just put new dirt right on top of the ground, almost anywhere. I told Wes, and he started a project! Here are some pics.

Here's the before shot.We went and got some wood, and here's Wes getting ready to start the project. In action...
Construction complete!
We also took our first trip to the local recycling yard where you can get all the compost you can load into your car in 15 min for free. As you can see, it only filled up half the bed. We could have gotten more in 15 min, but the Prius was a little heavy laden. We had to go back a few weekends later to get more compost to fill the whole thing. Here's the after shot with the finished product!Complete with a little movable seat that Wes made for me with the extra wood, and you can see some of the plants we transplanted to their new home.
Meanwhile our cherry tomatoes are doing well. Sun sugars are deliciously sweet.Lettuce was doing good, it's a bit wilty now, but not sure how long to wait to harvest it.I planted a dahlia.Trimmed the roses...And these little guys are happy too. I forgot what they are called though.Since the beds, I've planted corn, bok choy, beets, scallions, and carrots! The seedlings are starting to come up!

Garlic Festival

Today we went to the Garlic Festival! For those of you who don't know, I spent the first half of my life...well a little less than half now, but it feels like the first half, in Gilroy, CA, the Garlic Capital of the World. When we lived there, we'd go to the festival almost every year. All the booths are put on by locals from the community, and I believe all proceeds go to charity. Since I've moved back to the Bay Area, I think I've only been twice, including today. It's fun to eat some yummy garlicy food and take a trip down memory lane.

And what is a trip down memory lane, without seeing your old house? It's looking good, and its close enough to the festival area to park nearby and walk.
Since it's always outrageously hot on the festival weekend, I wore the sun hat I bought the last time I went. I must confess, I don't think I've worn it since I bought it, so I whipped it out today. We also met up my childhood friend Sean, also from Gilroy, and his girlfriend Tracy. It was fun to catch up with them.
And take our picture in front of a blow up Garlic man. And see the flaming garlic, showing the amount of money they've raised since the start of festival. Unfortunatley, we didn't get a picture with the famous Garlic Man (yes there is a man in a garlic suit), but we ate some yummy stuff and did our best to keep cool.

LIVESTRONG 2009 Report

This should be titled the LIVESTRONG 2009 Ride Report, but it's just a report. I had a little fall in one of our training rides, not too long before the ride (no worries, I'm just fine), but I was a too sore to do the event. Sad, but I got to play photographer instead! So, needless to say, it this wont be as action packed as my race reports usually are ;).

The festivities started Sat evening, by going to pick up our race packets. I decided to still go ahead and get my free t-shirt. I didn't fund raise for nothing you know ;)
One of the highlights of the event was that our team jersey, designed by Inka for us for last year's ride, was selected this year as a finalist for the team jersey design contest. Since we only had 2 members, it wasn't really economical to get the logo silk screened on, so unfortunatley our iron-on version didn't really do Inka's design justice, nor did it stand up too well to the competition. But we still voted!
Wes and David filled out cards in honor of those they were riding for.
The cards joined the masses :)
We finished our pre-ride evening with dinner with Dan and Jessie, and our first trip to the Stanford Theater. It was fun!

Event day started very early...too early...I made Wes breakfast, while he got his things ready. We ate and headed off to pick up David. We arrived, parked, and the guys got ready to ride!Decked out the bikes...Then we went over to the staging area to join up with Carlos. I served as the runner to get last minute water and sunglasses substitutions :) Then they were off! Then my real mission began...to drive around to different points on the 50 mile course to capture the guys in action!

The first rest stop was only 11 miles out, so I didn't think I'd be able to high tail it over there in time. Esp because I had to wait for the mob of run/walkers from the event to start. So I mapped out where I thought I could catch them just after the first rest stop to get some action shots. I parked in downtown Los Gatos and waited for them to ride down Hwy 9.

First came Carlos! Then came David and Wes..., but my shutter speed was only fast enough to catch David. Then I headed over to the second rest stop. I put in the address in my GPS and headed across town. As I was driving over there, the roads were really reminding me of the roads I remember from the last leg of the race. I was a bit confused, but kept on my way. When I got there, I parked and walked over to the rest stop. The volunteers were still setting up and there were no bikers. I was confused, and as I walked towards the spot, I recognized it from last year as the third rest stop. I went back to the car and looked at my map, and realized I'd accidentally entered the address for the third stop in East SJ rather than the second stop in South SJ. So I jumped in my car and sped off, hoping to still meet them at the second stop.

While in the car, David called me and asked where I was. I guess I'd underestimated their time, so they'd been waiting a while and I wasn't even there yet. I felt so stupid for driving to the wrong stop, but we found another place on the map just after their second stop where I could catch them.

I eventually caught up with them and even drove past them and got an action shot on the road. Then the guys pulled over for a photo op.
And then they were off! Half way done! After my mishap with the third rest stop, I decided to just head back to downtown SJ to catch them at the finish. By that time I'd driven over 50 miles myself all over town tracking the guys. And I certainly didn't want to miss the finish.

So I made my way to downtown, parked, and had time for a couple phone conversations with some East Coast friends. Usually I'm not up early enough or home from work early enough to catch them. But that day I did! Some nice chats in the park, then off to watch the guys roll in.Here they come! And here are some finisher shots!Wes with 50 miles on the bike and me with 50 miles on the car! It was fun to have the challenge of being a spectator at such a long ride, and fun to watch them finish. They made great time and hauled up the two big hills, climbing 1200 ft total. Good job! And yay to celebrating Kevin for being cancer free this year! Thanks to all who donated to Team Zuber!
