I am the girlfriend of an UNCLE!

Yes, since I have no siblings, I have to take what I can get :). Wes' sister had a beautiful baby girl last night. Her name is Kaelin. Isn't she beautiful! And sooo tiny!

It's just a cell phone picture, so it's kinda grainy, but you can definitley see her cuteness!

Welcome to the world Kaelin!

I think Bridget has us ALL beat!

I haven't posted in a while...Probably because of the holiday busyness...among other things...but I was impressed by Bridget and Sarah for their updates...so here is my own. In college I put off Christmas presents and cards til after finals because then I would have a plethora of free time. But now that I'm not in school, I have the same mentality...but no free time! I assume the break will come...but it is much shorter and much too LATE. Esp this year considering my vacation starts on Christmas eve. Hmm...Hope no one is offended by my lack of preparation....

Christmas cards sent out: 0
Christmas cards not yet sent: who knows...I'm thinking if you're all lucky you'll get New Years cards this year

Christmas gifts done knitting: 0 uhhh not the knitter here...
Christmas gifts yet to knit: see above

Gifts otherwise hand-crafted: 0
Left to craft: remember that lateness I mentioned...uhh yeah...

Gifts purchased: 6
Left to purchase: 0 financial situation has dominated unfortunately

Batches of cookies baked: 3
Cookies eaten: 2 ..yay I win on this one. I packaged them up to give out so fast I could hardly have a taste.
Left to bake: as many as possible

Tree in house: yes
Tree decorated: yes
House decorated: yes
Lights up outside: nope...don't have any
Wreath on door: nope

Impressed? You shouldN'T be. I think I've finally given myself permission to not be a Christmas production machine this year and I am embracing it! You'll have to settle for hugs and love this year, but I think that's the best anyway.

But I have been spinning twice a week, working like a mad woman to meet work deadlines, and now madly preparing to go to Oregon for Christmas. Those of you wondering, Wes and I will be driving up on the 23rd, doing the Christmas Thang at my parents new house in Corbett, and then driving up to Seattle to see Wes' brand new NIECE on the 27th. Yay for the first baby in his family. Then back for New Years even in Portland, and then back down to work on the 2nd of Jan. Quick week.

Hopefully next time I post I'll have some good Christmas or New Year's photos!

Merry Christmas!

Ahhh Thanksgiving!

I had a lovely Thanksgiving this year. Sarah and I decided to go for a run at Rancho to work up an appetite. We slept in, and unlike crazy Lizzy and Judith, we went running at a reasonable holiday hour of 11:00am. Unfortunately, we were not the only ones with that idea. It was this morning that Sarah and I really realized the idiosyncrasies of people in the Bay Area. Where else would you find a running trail PACKED on Thanksgiving morning?!? It was like there was a festival or something. All the parking lots were full, there were families and children running around, and of course...many other runners with the same idea we had. I guess we weren't that revolutionary. But we earned our dinner!

Since I've moved to the Bay Area, my aunt Diane and her family have been kind enough to include Wes and I in their celebrations. The menu goes back years and was put together by Miles' mother Gayle. She even has a cookbook you can buy. Check it out! If you look hard you can find a pic with me in there. Anyway, the food is absolutely delicious, and the company is wonderful. This year I invited some friends from church to join us. Here we all are:
And after we are utterly stuffed, after the annual basketball competition of Horse ( for which Miles' is the reigning champion for who knows how many years now ), which unfortunately I was too tired to partake in, the dessert came out. Round 2 so to speak. I thought we were all on the same page with the fullness, but obviously my cousins Nicole and Amy had a different story. Check them out:
You can see the enthusiasm there, that's for sure :). Gotta love 'em.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Fall Flowers

Well...I have to say the trees have proven me wrong about California falls. But it is rather sporadic. Go down one street, it looks like summer ( lots of leafy trees) , the next like fall ( colorful leafy trees) , the next like winter ( leaves have gone ), and I've just discovered a beautiful fall/winter bloom in the courtyard to my apartment. Anyone know what these things are? When I have a house some day I would love to have them in my garden.

Ever since I moved in, I just thought this was some green shrub near where I get my mail. But lo and behold one day there were big beautiful red and yellow flowers on it. See!!!

As I leave for work in the morning, I usually feel very tired, and somewhat blah about the day ahead...or the week ahead esp on a Monday. But when I pass these flowers just before I get to my car...God gives me something to smile about in the midst of it all.

Happy Birthday Wes!

Well Wes is one of those wonderful Halloween babies! Monday was his birthday and we had a potluck dinner party on Saturday night to celebrate. Here are some of the memories!
Seeing as Wes' birthday memories always involve costumes, he couldn't resist. Here he is his dead on the couch.
Another victim of course....

And here is my masterpiece! 3 layer chocolate hazelnut cake with ganache frosting and a broken chocolate sheet to decorate. With toasted hazelnuts on the outside of course! It was delicious.
And who could resist decorating with MINI pumpkins! (As you can see my obsession with anything mini is coming through.) I doubt they are really pumpkins...maybe persimmons or something with some wierd genetic engineering. But if Safeway says they are mini pumpkins, they must be!

Happy Birthday Wes!

The fall...what fall?

Last week, I my friend Annie, who just moved to beautiful Sun Valley, ID wrote me an email and asked me how the fall is. I didn't respond right away because the question took me by surprise. Then I realized why. So this is what I wrote her.

"The fall huh? What fall? California doesn't have 4 seasons. It has winter and summer. Winter is a bit colder than Oregon's fall, but much more dry. The seasons formerly known as fall and spring are some manic stage of being in between winter or summer. One day its warm and sunny, the next day cold and dry. That's about it. If you're lucky and you happen to see a tree that is not always green or brown, it is quite nice...and then suddenly you are reminded that it is almost Thanksgiving. There is one fiery red tree on the walk I do at lunch, but other than that you are wondering why sometimes you need to wear long sleeves.

So how is fall? Well today its partially cloudy. Yesterday it was sunny and I went on a bike ride...who knows what tomorrow will bring. ;)"

But that's why we like it here right?

The woes of the 20s

Many people say that the 20s are the best time of your life. What a myth! I think that the 20s are quite possibly some of the worst times of your life. If not the worst, I would say by far the most difficult. Here are some of the reasons why...(and some possible solutions...to be taken with a grain of salt of course).

PROBLEM: Supporting yourself is hard! You're trying to support yourself financially for the first time. You may have done this some in college or something, but once you are out...you're on your own man! You've got to get a job, pay the bills, and most of the time...all by yourself. AND...you probably don't even know what the heck you want to do with your life, so it's hard to enjoy or commit to the work you do.

SOLUTION: I think the government should supplement the income of people in their 20s to use the time to thoughtfully and meaningfully decide what to do.

PROBLEM: Relationships are hard! Let me say that again....relationships are HARD! Esp when you have relationships with other people in their 20s. Everyone is trying to make ends meet, to fight their way through the world, and carve out their own little piece. It doesn't really work of course. It's hard to keep in touch with friends. They are all over the place. It's hard to have emotional support when you're friends are all over the place. It's hard to date.

SOLUTION: Go live alone in the mountains. You'll never have to deal with people again! HAHAHA. Just kidding. I really don't have much advice for this one. If you have any, please send it my way.

PROBLEM: Finding your identity is hard! Like I said, you are struggling to support yourself financially, trying to find purpose for your life. You feel like you are supposed to have it together, but you don't. And more hard news is...you probably never will. People in their 20s are quite often headstrong. We are young! We are invincible! We are strong! So we think the things above should be easy...and when they aren't...we are shocked. It's rough man.

SOLUTION: Trust in God and wait on Him. We can't do anything on our own strength. So we might as well relax and enjoy the gifts of God and trust in Him to give us our identity. I found this passage recently and thought it was relevant:

Lamentations 3:22-27
The unfailing love of the LORD never ends! By his mercies we have been kept from complete destruction. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each day. I say to myself, "The LORD is my inheritance; therefore, I will hope in him!"

The LORD is wonderfully good to those who wait for him and seek him. So it is good to wait quietly for salvation from the LORD. And it is good for the young to submit to the yoke of his discipline.

I also got some good advice from people who are out of their 20s. When asked which decade of her life she liked the best, one woman said: definitely my 40s. You don't have to work so hard. You have more resources. You can take vacations...nice vacations. You have been through a lot of things and you know how to deal with them. Another woman said: My 30s-40s. I think by now God has shown me what things I am good at and where I can serve best. I have more confidence in what I'm doing than I did in my 20s.

After some of those conversations, I actually found myself looking forward to turning 30 in a few years....who would have ever thought that would happen! I'm sure when I read this in my 30s, I'll feel much differently!

So here's a shout out to those in their 20s! I'm with ya! I feel your pain! Now, lets laugh about it together, and cry about it together, and wait together...there is hope!

I have too much fun at Bridget's Blog. So I had to do some too.

You're bubblegum!!! You love to have a good time,

Palo Alto Moonlight Run

Well I know I haven't posted in a while, I've been working on something good in my head, but it's not ready for the public yet...but stay tuned!

Until then, you get some pics from my latest race. A bunch of friends and I participated in the Palo Alto Moonlight run. This is a special run for me because it commemorates the beginning of my latest interest in sports...and I think it was my first ever race. Last year I ran the 5k, and this year I ran the 10k, so I am very proud! And I think it felt much easier this year too. Fun stuff. So here are, from left to right, Elizabeth ( a crazy, but amazingly wonderful triathlon buddy), Sarah ( a running and church buddy who is very patient with me in more ways than just running), Sunil ( a wonderful guy from church, and Wes ( I don't think he needs an introduction ;) ). This is our pre-race picture.

Then we all ran the race, and headed off to IHOP to gorge on breakfast food at 10pm. Here is Elizabeth, Esther ( awesome church friend), Sarah, me ( I'm smiling a little too hard), and Wes. And by the way...I seriously dragged Wes into doing this with me, so he was a great sport!
So that's the latest. Stay tuned!

My Darling Wes

So this is a tale about my darling Wes. I love him to death, but he sure does have bad luck. Mostly with transportation. I just don't get it sometimes.

(Remember those fortunately, unfortunately stories you had to write in Elementary school? This is JUST like one of those!)

Wes' Fortunately, Unfortunately Motorcycle Diaries
  1. Unfortunately, Wes has always had bad luck with cars. It's hard to find a good car for cheap when you are a student, so you usually go from crappy car, to crappy car.
  2. Fortunately, Wes decided that he could buy a nicer motorcycle than car for his money. So in 2002ish he bought his first motorcycle.
  3. Unfortunately, the guy who sold it to Wes was a spaz and ran the bike to the ground, so he had to sell it.
  4. Fortunately, Wes was able to get a better bike.
  5. Unfortunately, bike #2 wasn't so hot either.
  6. Fortunately, bike #3 was not far behind.
  7. Unfortunately, bike #3 had some problems.
  8. Fortunately, bike #3 got fixed.
  9. Unfortunately, the shop did a shoddy job and the bike practically exploded on the freeway.
  10. Fortunately, Wes had the finances to purchase a BRAND new motorcycle! No problems at all! Bike #4 is here to stay!
A year later....
  1. Unfortunately, Wes got in a motorcycle accident.
  2. Fortunately, Wes was just fine. Hardly a scratch on him.
  3. Unfortunately, the bike is not as good. Forks are bent, needs new parts.
  4. Fortunately, Wes gets a bonus at work and can afford to fix the bike.
  5. Unfortunately, all the parts are on back order from Japan until who knows when.
  6. Fortunately, if he buys the WHOLE forks instead of just the parts, they will be there by the time school starts so he can commute to Santa Cruz.
  7. Unfortunately, buying the whole parts cost a lot more.
  8. See #10 above.
  9. Unfortunately, Wes has to ride the bus to Santa Cruz and all over until the parts come.
  10. Fortunately, he has a friend at Santa Cruz who can give him a ride.
  11. Fortunately (yay 2 Fortunatelys in a row! ) He decided to buy a bicycle to make commuting on the bus easier...And gas prices are crazy so he is doing his part to save the environment ;). And he likes to ride the bike...So this is a good fortunately.
A week later...
  1. Unfortunately, Wes is riding his bike to work and rides through thorns. Both tires go flat, he has to walk most of the way to work.
  2. Fortunately, he has the most awesome girlfriend in the world, so I picked up new tubes and brought them to his work.
  3. Unfortunately, next time he goes to Santa Cruz, he misses the last bus home and gets stuck...
  4. Unfortunately (yes another) Wes has no cell phone and can't call to cancel his apts for the evening.
  5. Fortunately, he found a friend in SC who would let him stay the night.
  6. Fortunately, the day has come when all the motorcycle parts are back.
  7. Unfortunately, he is stuck in SC and can't get home to fix the bike.
  8. Fortunately, he gets out of school early and can go home to fix the bike.
  9. Unfortunately, all the bus drivers in Santa Cruz go on STRIKE!!! So he can't get home.
  10. Fortunately, there might be a chance he can go back to campus and see if his friend is there to give him a ride.
  11. Unfortunately, going to campus entails riding up a GIANT mountain to get there...And it is a possibility his friend won't even be there.
  12. Fortunately, God is good, and he makes it up the hill, finds his friend, and arranges a ride home.
  13. Fortunately (yay 2 Fortunatelys in a row! ), he makes it home, and fixes his motorcycle so he can ride to campus avoiding the striking bus drivers.
  14. Fortunately (yay 3 Fortunatelys in a row! ), Wes has decided to by a cell phone, and he will have communication with the outside world and transportation!!
Stay tuned for the next episode of Wes' Fortunately, Unfortunately Motorcycle Diaries!

Race Report: Mermaid Triathlon Santa Cruz

Hi all. I know you've been waiting for it...so here it is! My race report! And the tale begins....

So it all started at 4:30am. I got up after about 4 hours sleep. That is really not enough, but what can you do? I got out of bed...woke up Wes off the couch, and then started getting into my clothes. I had some coffee (can't forget the coffee, even at 4:30am) and some cottage cheese and peaches. Wes got out of the shower and loaded up the car and we were off...to pick up Sarah. Picked up Sarah a little after 5:00am, and then we were off...like a screaming herd of turtles...off to Santa Cruz.

We arrived around 6ish, and I got in line to pick up my race information. Got my bib and shirt and race bag, got body marked, and then went to set up transition. By this time my buddies Elizabeth and Judith had arrived, so we got started setting up our transition. For you non-triathletes, this is where you set up your bike, running shoes, helmet and all that stuff in a quick way so you can run in, get your gear and go on to the next event. Here we are setting up...in the DARK! How crazy are we? You can see me behind my Tigger balloon Wes got me...balloons are helpful at tris, so that when you are running into transition in a crazy exhausted stupor you can find your stuff.
So, we set up...then we waited. I had a banana and energy bar. Elizabeth and I went for a jog around the area to get a little warm. It was freezing! And we prayed...man ocean swims are freaky. But God is good!

So around 7 we got in our wetsuits and headed down to the beach. When I say down...I mean down...we went down 152 steps, which yes....we had to run up to get back to transition. Here they are in the dark before the race started.
They gave the directions about the swim course and then started the first wave. We got another chance to pray with Judith, then again with all of us and Wes and Sarah...we all needed as much prayer cover as possible for this one :).

We saw Judith off in the first wave. Then there was some time before Elizabeth and I started, so we went in the water to warm up. I think the term warm up is a little ironic here...I should really say...FREEZE OUR BUTTS OFF. It was sooo cold! My face felt so numb! So we swam out...saw a sea lion about 20 feet away...and then swam back. That was enough warming up.

7:50 came and Elizabeth's wave was off....then I ran over to the exit area just in time to see Judith exit and cheer her on to give her courage to run up those crazy stairs! 7:55 came and then it was my turn. I was behind some pretty intense looking ladies, but I kept my cool. ;) I went in the water and it was so calm. Felt almost like lake swimming...except the cold. Sighting was easy around the pier and the ship. I felt strong and steady...just keep swimming. When I got to the edge of the pier I looked out at the huge ocean out there...I thought it would look vast, but it was so cloudy you couldn't see far. It feet like we were just a few people swimming way out at sea. Swimming back was much easier than in our workouts...probably cause of less waves. My arms were kinda sore so I wanted to kick more, but I remembered that the stairs were coming so I should use my arms out. After this I didn't have to use anything but leg! So here I am exiting the water. Keep in mind wetsuits are not flattering ;).
I went up the beach, around the pier, over to the stairs and up up up! I was pooped at the top. But I made it. I got into transition and out of my wetsuit without much trouble. But putting on my shirt was a pain being all wet and cold and salty. It took some time, but I got it on, got on my helmet, socks, shoes, sunglasses, chugged some gatorade and off I went. Here I am leaving transition on my bike.
So the bike started out good, though I knew the big hills were to come. I headed out strong and then down a big hill...that was only the beginning cause I knew I had to come up it again! But I went down and around and soon I was at the first big hill. I rounded the corner and started to go up...and I saw a small group of women walking their bikes up. As I inched towards them, I kept thinking, "I can't do it...I'm going to have to walk..." but then I remembered this was only the first of the big ones, so there was no way I was walking at the first one. So I don't know how I did it...well I do...it was God...but I made it up that hill. I went pretty slow to recover, but I did it. So up and down some smaller hills, but on the straight aways, however few there were, I felt fast. My max speed was 24.9 mph. It was awesome.

Soon enough big hill #2 came up. There was just one woman ahead walking her bike and to keep my mind off that option I just kept my head down and focused on one pedal at a time...and praise God I made it again! More cool down from the burning quads and soon I was screaming down the first big hill I came up. And Wes and Sarah were waiting cheering at the bottom. Then just a few more turns and I went up the last hill...the first one I came down. I rounded the corner knowing this was the last one, and I pounded up it. Man did that hurt...but once I was at the top, and completely out of breath, I just wheezed some praises to God, cause the worst was over.

I made it into the last transition, got my running shoes on, ditched the helmet, drank more gatorade and grabbed a mini Luna bar and some gel. I was out of there and then headed down the hill to run by the beach, and yes, that means I have to come up it again. Seriously, who planned this course!

The down hill felt good, a good use of different muscles, but my legs were tight, and my feet were numb from the cold and the bike. Once I got down to the bottom I realized I was in lots of pain. My calves were really tight and just burning. I stopped to stretch shortly, then back to running...or half run half limping. I ate my mini bar, and held on to the gel. The running was so painful. I passed Wes and Sarah and asked them to pray for my right calf. I kept at it, and was almost to the turn around...I downed my gel, desperate times call for desperate measures. That stuff is so gross, but I was hoping the electrolytes would keep my calves from cramping. I made it to the turn around and water station, gulped down some water and coughed most of it out. Then I was back down the home stretch...my calves hating every minute of it.

I finally made it back to that infamous last hill, and up I went. There was no way I was walking at this point...I was almost there! So I ran...very slowly, but I ran...and Elizabeth and her family was at the bend cheering me on. Once to the top, I saw Wes and Sarah at the finish line, so I sprinted...or something like that...in to the finish. Then I walked and wheezed my way to transition to get my water. I walked some and stretched some...and I was done! Soon my asthma died down so I could talk. Then I felt glad I made it. All I could say was, " I didn't walk up those hills!" I did it. I suppose I could have had a better time if I had conserved my energy more, but I pushed and I did it. So all is well. Praise God for the body He created.

So unfortunately, the finishing picture was much to unflattering to post online, so instead you get a beautiful shot of the pier and cement ship that I swam around.
So that's a wrap! Next up...10k, but not 'til October. So stay tuned for more ramblings of Elaine. Love you!

Blogging away...

Ok, here I go, I'm blogging away...not really sure what I'm supposed to say, but I thought that I should keep updating. If I don't write something weekly, then all you hear is the major life events, but you know, sometimes the interesting stuff is in the daily nothingness. I got a quote once that said, 'How we spend our days is how we spend our lives.' That's from Anne Dillard. It's a good one. So when it comes down to it, I spend my life sitting in front of a computer, sorting sentences, making lists of words, and training others to do the same...kinda random really...

Anyway, the latest interesting thing is that my next triathlon is on Sunday! Ack! If you don't see a post in a while it's cause it went so bad I was too ashamed to say anything. But hopefully I'll survive with minimal walking. It's a 400 meter ocean swim ( I swam with sea lions once....freaky), followed by the most brutal 11 mile bike course ever ( 11 miles isn't that far, so when I rode the course full of giant climbs and steep scary descents, I was not a happy camper ) and a 2.5 mile run. The run is pretty harmless except the GIANT hill leading into the finish line. Who designs these things really? I guess it's my fault for torturing myself. Anyway, it will be an adventure. If the pics aren't just exhausted Elaine, then I'll post some next week.

Getting back in touch: A recap

Hi all,

Well I've joined the 21st century with a blog of my own. Thanks to Bridget really. I love reading her blog and finding out what she is up to, so I thought it was only fair to give her something to read as well. Anyway, many of you and I talk to regularly, so you know what's up in Elaine-world, but many of you have missed some of the details. So here is a much abbreviated recap of the last couple years.

June 2002 - Graduated from UO Yay!

August 2002 - Moved to San Jose and started MA Linguistics program at SJSU.

January 2003 - Started going to a vineyard church in Palo Alto, met many wonderful friends!
April 2003 - Started a part time job at working on a Spanish machine translation project.

August 2003 - Back to school, started going full steam ahead on my MA thesis on prepositions in Garifuna (language spoken in Belize).

May 2004 - Graduated SJSU with MA Linguistics, finished thesis...whew...that was a rough year.June 2004 - Started working full-time at the same speech technology company on various machine translation projects.

November 2004 - Went to Belize with a wonderful woman who I worked on my thesis with to visit the place I studied so much about. It really deserves way more than one post, but like I said, this is a recap.
February 2005 - Moved to an apt closer to work.

May 2005 - My crazy friend Rebecca got me hooked into training for a triathlon.

June 12, 2005 - First sprint distance triathlon! Woo hoo! I did it!
June 15-July 1 2005 - Went to France for my friend Karen's wedding...boy do the French know how to do weddings...then took Wes romping around my old stomping grounds in Barcelona.August 20, 2005 - Went to my grandparents 50th wedding anniversary in LA.
August 21, 2005 - Quarter century birthday, very anti-climactic really.

And that just about brings us to today...September 7, 2005. Home sick from work, just a cold, but a nasty one, writing a blog to catch up with my friends and family. I'm working, I'm training for my next tri on Sept 18th, and waiting to see what God does next. I hope you enjoy my updates. Love you all,

Elaine
