Social Studies Assignment 1- Governance in S'pore

The Ethnic Integration Policy

Under the Housing & Development Board, there is a current policy called the Ethnic Integration Policy which portrays the principle of fairness of good governance.

“The Ethnic Integration Policy is a government policy implemented to prevent the formation of racial enclaves and to promote ethnic integration in HDB housing towns. Limits for each ethnic group are set to achieve a balance of the various communities in a neighbourhood and housing block.”

I believe that this policy is certainly showing fairness to all the ethnic groups in Singapore. It is considered a policy of multi-racialism as the government gives equal opportunities to all ethnic groups for the buying of units in an area. By carrying out this policy, it creates more opportunities of the sharing of different ethnic backgrounds, which in turn led to the bonding of different races. Strong social and community ties can then be built and such relationships are significant in shaping out a more harmonious Singapore. The Ethnic Integration Policy can achieve this goal through maintaining prescribed block and neighbourhood proportions in each ethnic group. Hence, this promotes ethnic harmony which is especially important in a multi-racial Singapore.

In additional, through such a “rule” and arrangement, it encourages the different ethnic groups to learn to show respect and tolerance to one another naturally. As Singaporeans become more open-minded, their tolerance level towards other races will be more magnanimous. Being rational people, they are more able to compromise and get along well with the rest. As such mutual understanding strengthens, Singaporean can easily resolve problems and come to an agreement without having to affect one another's relationships.

When I first came across this policy while surfing the net, I realized that it is indeed an effective policy which is made with the nation’s interest at heart. I have been getting along well with my Malay and Indian neighbours for almost 10 years, living on the same level. They are really approachable people and we are glad to maintain such a friendly relationship. This has been the result of the Ethnic Integration Policy and definitely benefits Singapore as a whole.
