rest in power

Since the title of this blog was inspired by a Prince song, I thought I would be remiss if I didn't post something here on the very sad occasion of his passing.

Thanks for your music.

And for being a shining example of how to be true to yourself.

from keeping up this yearly tradition]

diabetes camp

I'd like to get back to blogging at least semi-regularly, but where do I even start? I guess I'll just try to ease into it by doing a photodump. Since E is at diabetes camp this week, how about I post the drop-off pics from the last 6 years. I bet we'll get a good chuckle about how the fashion has changed over time. I wonder if anything else has! ;)

2010
We made sure E was wearing
a medical alert bracelet. HA!

2011
So excited to get to the cabin,
didn't even want to stop for a photo.

2012
E's friend L (aka Pip)'s first year.

 2013
They're both like:
Please just take the picture and LEAVE.

2014
Sorry about the #harshcrop but somehow
we didn't get one of just E and L last year.

2015
Hope they're having a good week.

#IWishPeopleKnewThatDiabetes Day

Thanks to Kelly at Diabetesaliciousness who came up with the idea for that hashtag up there. You can read about the inspiration in her blog post here. People all over the DOC are chiming in with their own experiences. Here's my contribution:

I wish people knew that diabetes...

- requires my kid to inject himself with a synthetic hormone regularly for the rest of his life

- comes with a shortened life expectancy and higher incidence of depression than the general population

- may cause my son to face discrimination from future employers

- is often misunderstood by people who do not have direct experience with it (including myself before my kid's diagnosis), which can be very damaging to those who live with it

- is frequently misrepresented and used as a punch line in pop culture, creating and reinforcing widespread myths and misconceptions

All of which sucks a lot. But I also wish people knew that diabetes:

- gets my kid into a summer camp where he can bond with other teens in the same boat as him

- has inspired active online communities filled with advocates speaking out and coming together for the cause

- is responsible for many friendships I may never have made without it in our lives

- has solidified my existing friendships, as people reach out to us to see how they can support our family

And guess what. Every single thing I listed above? Those are also things I wish people knew that transgender people have to deal with.

BOOM.

Let me be clear.

I am NOT saying that being transgender is a disease that needs to be cured.

I am saying that both diabetes and gender dysphoria are lifelong conditions that are greatly misunderstood by the general public. And by raising my voice, about both issues, I hope I can raise the visibility and remove some of the stigma surrounding them.

Check out my other blog for more musings on trans issues.

big news

[Apologies for the multiple posts to those who follow me on other social media platforms.]

In honor of International Transgender Day of Visibility, I have an announcement to make.

SURPRISE! IT'S A BOY!

Due to this new development in our lives, I've started a new bloggy blog.
I'll probably be posting over there quite a bit more often than in these parts.
At least for now.
So come on over, if you're interested.

#dblogcheck

As you can tell from the tumbleweeds blowing through this blog, it's been years since I've updated with any regularity. But I found myself wanting to participate in #dblogcheck today. So I found a story I wrote almost 5 years ago, but never shared here. I'm posting it below with minor edits.
===================================================================

10 June 2010

Yesterday I was hanging out in L's room while she put some of her artwork from the past school year on her walls. I was lying on her bed and she was hopping from subject to subject as only a kid recently released on summer vacation can do. I can't even remember how the topic came up. Maybe it was a complete non sequitur. She said, lightly, and with no angst whatsoever, "I think if I decide to have kids, I'm going to adopt."

I was surprised because she doesn't have any friends who are adopted, and I can't recall any books or movies she might have read or seen recently that touched on that topic. I said, "That's really cool. You know, people have different reasons for adopting." She said, "Like what?" and I said, "Well, some people's bodies aren't able to carry a baby; other people feel like there are enough kids in the world who need a family and they want to help those kids out, stuff like that." She paused and said, (still very casually, like, no biggie) "I would want to adopt so that there would be less of a chance my kid would have diabetes."

That hadn't even been a whisper at the corner of my mind when she started the conversation. I didn't even realize she knew it could be genetic. But instead of feeling like I was hit by a truck, I just felt like I went over a slight speed bump. Instead of having the wind knocked out of me, I just felt a bit jostled. I said, "Well, you know that blogger I read, Kerri the girl (not Carey the boy)
? She just had a baby, and everything went fine..." L said, "I know," continued to put sticky tack on the back of her drawings, and breezily turned to the wall to find the best positions for her masterpieces. And that was that.

If you had told me a year ago that on a sunny Sunday afternoon, while I was lying on my ten-year-old daughter's bed, she would start a casual conversation about how she was considering adopting a kid so she wouldn't pass on the genes of an incurable disease to her baby, I think I would have crumpled onto myself and sobbed. But I didn't. I just paused. Because it made my heart hurt, for a moment. But there's nothing for it but to keep on. And so we do.

that she did NOT hang on her wall

===================================================================

Re-living this moment from 5 summers ago (which happened nine months after L's diagnosis, hilariously), reveals how so many things have changed since then. The support and community of the DOC was crucial for my family in those early months and years. And you guys are still important to us, just in a less diabetes-centric and more regular-old-friends kinda way.

So it's five years later and L still doesn't want kids, but for vastly different reasons. And diabetes is no longer this huge unknown that is at the forefront of our every thought and interaction, thankfully. The nurses in the hospital at diagnosis told me that L's diabetes care would some day be as mundane as teeth brushing, and I laughed in their faces. But I owe those gals an apology.

And here's a bonus of having your child diagnosed with a chronic condition, that no one ever tells you: once you and your husband and your nine-year-old have looked death in the face? You'd be amazed at how unfazed you can be when life throws other curve balls at you. Even the big ones.

So #THANKSDIABETES.

And thank you DOC.

pics

[in lieu of actual content, please enjoy a couple of photos.]

my friend Z came to town and brought his hasselblad with him. i know nothing about cameras except that this one reminded me of the one max uses on 'parenthood', because you have look down through the viewfinder.

Z is a pro and stuff so we went for a walk until he found a suitably gritty backdrop to snap a couple of pics. then we had to wait for them to be developed. oh the novelty!

after he snapped that shot we were leaving but we stumbled upon a toy gun in the yard so obviously we had to shoot the cover for our not-yet-released hardcore rap record from the 80's.

holiday card 2014

Happy Holidays from my family (dressed as characters from Bob's Burgers) to you!

For the cost of an Ozzy Osbourne wig, TWO fake mustaches and a frozen sausage muffin we put the costumes together and cracked ourselves up while having our photo taken by our patient friend Jill.

In case you're not familiar with the television program, here are brief descriptions of the characters,
as seen on the Bob's Burger's Wiki:

Linda is extremely outgoing, flamboyant, and has absurd obsessions with performing arts and dramatic tradition - she will occasionally take extreme measures to pursue these and make her family/bystanders join her in enacting this. Memorable quote: "Well, there wasn't a raccoon king in our alley until I went out there and picked my favorite one. His name is Little King Trashmouth. He's gay."

Tina is a hopeless romantic with minimal social skills.  She likes horses, rainbows, zombies, and writing erotic friend fiction. Memorable quotes: "I want a dry-erase board so I can write down all my private thoughts and then erase them immediately." and "And if boys had uteruses, they'd be called duderuses."

While poor with business management and cursed with an unlucky streak, Bob's skills at burger cooking has been shown to be excellent, to the point where he has been referred to as a 'beef artist'. Memorable quote: "I'll tell you what the problem is. It's not dinner, and it isn't theater either. It's like the imitation cheese of theater."

+ + +

There are more members of this animated family but we didn't feel like dressing our cat up in a bunny hat so we skipped it. Here are some videos of the characters saying their catch phrases over and over. Please enjoy.

Tina saying "Uhhhhhhh...."

Bob saying "Oh My God":

Linda saying "Allriiiiight!!!" (sadly can't embed, but you can watch it here.)

ALL THE BEST TO YOU AND YOURS IN 2015!
