Friday Loving

This week I'm loving

Our Christmas Decorations...

Photobucket

Why yes, that is a smaller second tree in our family room. There may or may not be eight Christmas trees scattered throughout the house. I apologize for NOTHING!

My new hair sticks...

Photobucket

Photobucket

Now that the tree is out of the woodworking shop, it is time to put my man to work. I told him I need some new hairsticks, and he delivered. And did you notice how fabulous my hair looks in these pictures. I'm lovin' that too.

This picture of my oldest and youngest "ice" skating...

Photobucket

So what if the picture is too dark. I still love it.

And I'm loving that I FINALLY found a pattern that almost perfectly replicates the sweater given to The Greatest by his beloved Grandmother nearly fifteen years ago...

Photobucket

It just needs to be a sckootch longer (yes that is an official unit of measurement), and brown. Sure the pattern is in Japanese. But I won't let a little thing like a language barrier stop me.

The real question is can I knit this sweater in secret and have it done in time for Christmas?

Ordinarily the knitting part would be no problem.

It is the secret part that is causing the trouble.

He's sleeping right now, having worked the night shift last night.

Guess I should get off the internet and get busy!

Purple!

My purple mohair sweater is growing at an alarming rate.

Photobucket

I can't be certain, but I think it might be on steroids   Nothing else can really explain the lightning speed at which it is progressing.

Perhaps small dog has been working on it at night after I go to bed.  Small dog, or maybe kindly yarn gnomes who have taken pity on the me when I fall asleep over my knitting.  They come and lovingly take my yarn, fix my sleep-deprivation induced mistakes, and knit a few more inches for good measure.

Yes, it must be yarn gnomes knitting my sweater.  Because my yarn would never do anything as dangerous as take steroids.  Right?

I've been a little worried about running out of yarn.  This sweater is meant to have three-quarter length sleeves, and a gorgeous cowl neck.  I've been thinking I can knit one or the other, but I don't think I have enough yarn to knit both.  This made me sad, because the pattern looks so nice with the cowl and the three-quarter length sleeves.  Sadness settled upon me, and I was losing the will to knit.  Maybe not the will to knit entirely, but the will to knit this beautiful beautiful purple mohair.  It was depressing.  I was already browsing Ravelry for my next project (it will be this or this).

Then I tried the sweater on.

Did you know a sweater knit of aran weight mohair is super duper warm.

Like really really really warm.

Like possibly heat stroke inducing warm.

And I live in the desert.

Where it is warm.

Like really really really warm.

Like it is the end of November and we are still sleeping with our windows open kinda warm.

I don't know if it is physically possible for me to wear a mohair sweater with three-quarter length sleeves, and a cowl neckline.

Maybe I'll just leave it as a crew neck with short sleeves.

Dilemma solved I am happily knitting on my sweater once again.

Atleast I am until I fall asleep somewhere around 9:42.

Then the yarn gnomes take over.

Lessons in Knitting

I've been tired lately.

I don't know if I am coming down with something and my body is trying very hard to fight it off without fully succumbing to illness. In which case allow me to publicly thank my white blood cells. Or maybe it has something to do with the fact that my neighbor's dog has decided that at 1:30 in the morning his shadow is a terrifying sight that can only be dealt with by barking at it until the sun comes up. Really, my exhaustion could be due to anything.

That's not the point.

My point is, I've been tired lately.

And it is affecting my knitting.

The other night I was knitting a top down raglan sweater in the most gorgeous purple mohair. The purple is a deep royal purple. The mohair is 20% silk, making it 20% more awesome than regular mohair. I'm really starting to love yarn with silk blended in. It gives it such a sheen and luster. I wanted to knit so badly that I sat on the couch and knit with my eyes closed as I tried not to fall asleep at the super loserly time of 9:30 p.m.

Of course this did not go well for me.

I discovered my stitch count was off. I could not determine if I had missed an increase, or added an increase that did not belong. I could not find a dropped stitch, or a mysterious yarn over that had turned into a stitch. There was no logical explanation for this mystery stitch.

I could have handled this situation in several different ways. I could have tinked back stitch by stitch until I found the problem and the stitch count was correct. I could have just skipped an increase, thus righting the stitch count. I could, and probably should, have set my knitting aside until morning, when I had fresh eyes, and daylight to see what I was doing.

Did I do any of those things?

Nope.

Of course I didn't.

I decided my best course of action was to rip out the five inches of knitting I had created.

Five inches of mohair.

It wasn't pretty. Mohair does not rip gently. The mohair clung to itself and refusing to give up its form under pain of death.  Fiber flew in the air. Tiny strands of mohair all around.

Mohair is a fighter. I'll give it that.

Once returned to a squishy ball of yarn. I cast on once again.

I knit about and inch and a half, AN INCH AND A HALF, before I realized something was horribly wrong. But I couldn't figure out what was wrong. I just knew my knitting was off.

This time I did the smart thing and went to bed. It was now a less loserly time of 10:30 p.m.

The next morning, armed with minimal sleep and daylight, I discovered this.

Photobucket

This is actually quite amazing. It is such a rookie/newbie mistake to twist your knitting when you join to knit in the round.

But I twisted it not once, not twice, but three time.

That's some serious skillz there. Yup, skillz with a z, cause that's how I rollz.

Learn from me.

For the safety of us all, do not knit under extreme sleep deprivation.

It just isn't worth it.

And don't wear lip gloss when frogging mohair.

Remember "tiny strands of mohair all around".

I'm just saying.

Wanna See My Yarn?

I am proud to announce Meaty finally got his pumpkin pie.  I'm not gonna lie, even with the store bought crust it was a lot of work.  But it was delicious, so it was worth the effort.

Photobucket

Ok, so I totally lied.  I bought it at Wal-Mart.  It was kinda gross.  I feel no shame!

Meaty was heartbroken when he realized he was going to have to share the pie with his sisters.  His Christmas wish list now includes a pumpkin pie that he doesn't have to share.  The boy really likes pumpkin pie.

In other news, it took four days, but I have restored my Savers sweaters back to their former yarn glory.

Gaze with wonder upon all my glorious skeins.

Photobucket

And here they are all line up and pretty.

Photobucket

Sweet Pea thought my tower of cashmere lace weight looked like a snowman.

Photobucket

So we gave it a face.  It is hard to see, but there is a toothpick nose.  And yes, she is wearing her Halloween Costume.

Here they are tucked in safe and sound in my yarn cabinet.

Photobucket

So Pretty!

Playing Catch-Up

So the other day I got all dressed up to go shopping on Black Friday.  I was ready surprisingly early (a true sign that the Mayans are right, and the apocalypse is nigh) and had fifteen minutes to kill.

Naturally I spent that time taking pictures of my hand knit sweater for my blog.

After all, I had clean hair.

Photobucket

And look at that, I had a star on my head!  I'm totally rocking that star.

Pattern:  Hello (Rav link)

Yarn:  Spa, in Ocean Spray,  4 skeins (I think)

Needles:  Size 4 (maybe) Addi Turbos (pretty sure they were Addis)

Modifications:  None that I remember, this was perfect don't-think-just-follow-the-pattern knitting, assuming I remember this correctly.  The details of knitting this are rather fuzzy in my memory.  I do remember that I was watching the final season of Eureka, and I really loved it.  Did I love the final season of Eureka, or did I love the knitting?  The world may never know.

Review:  I knit this ages ago.  I don't recall precisely when.  Could have been last year, could have been over the summer.  No idea.  I really need to be a better blogger.

The timeline of this sweater is unimportant.  The important thing is I love this sweater.  I really do.

The bamboo spa yarn makes a really soft drapey fabric.  But word to the wise, this yarn was super splitty.  I do remember that.  Which is why I'm positive I knit this with my blunt tipped Addis.  Splitty yarn problem solved.

The sweater was knit with the contiguous sleeve method.  It is rather brilliant, blending the fit of a set in sleeves with the convenience of a no sew top down raglan.

Photobucket

It was rather clever, and the lazy finisher in me loved having the best of both worlds.

This cardigan had some great details, like this decorative thingie on the collar,

Photobucket

And the decorative side seam.

Photobucket

And here's a picture of the back of the sweater that serves no real purpose except to show off how long my hair is getting.

Photobucket

The only real down side to this sweater is the "right side" is reverse stockingnette stitch.  I often put this sweater on, and later realize I am wearing it inside out.

Maybe that is a plus?  The sweater is completely reverseable?

In summation, I love this sweater, but I decided I did not love the argyle shirt (too tight in my stomach, I am sucking it in in all the pictures, even the ones where my stomach is not visible), and I changed it before I went shopping.

SCORE!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday.  We had a very quiet Thursday.  The Greatest had to work that night, so he slept most of the day.  We had a ham instead of turkey.  It was a bold move.  Ham is just so much easier to cook that turkey.  As a consequence of no turkey, we also had a distinct lack of stuffing.  I had concerns as to how the children would take the news.  I feared a violent uprising from the peasants.  Instead the children were ecstatic  to have ham.  They cheered and chanted "ham, ham, ham, ham, ham."  I guess I need to make them ham more often.  They also had their much beloved veggie tray.

Photobucket

They claim it is the best part of Thanksgiving.

I had good intentions to make pumpkin pie.  It is Meaty's favorite.  I can not conquer pie crust.  I try, and I even had something passable last year.  But honestly the mere thought of tackling pie crust makes me want to have a long cry and then go take a nap.  This year I didn't even fight it.  I bought ready made crust from the grocery store.  And I still have yet to turn the crust into a pie.  Meaty is waiting.  It is kinda sad.

I don't generally do "Black Friday."  I have this theory that if you're buying a big ticket item you can get a smoking deal, but otherwise, for the little things, it is rarely worth my time to lose the sleep and brave the crowds.

Instead my friend and I left the house around 10, no losing sleep for us.  We went to Savers (which is like Good Will, only they actually sort the clothes into sections and sizes), so no crowds for us.  And look what I scored

Photobucket

Look at all that beautiful, beautiful yarn I found.  Sure, it is already in sweater form, but I can fix that.

But it gets better.  Check this out.

Photobucket

Why yes, that is a men's x-large 100% 2-ply cashmere sweater for $3.99.  Only it was Black Friday so all clothes were 50% off.  I scored all those beautiful yards of lace weight cashmere for $2.00.

It was a Black Friday Miracle!

Do Knitter Get Frarried?

So my 12 year old daughter came home last week and proudly announced that she got "frarried" that day.

"You got what?"

"Frarried!"

Ok?...

That's when she showed her ring.  She explained to me that she was now "friend married."  She and her best friend had officially declared themselves to be "Best Friends Forever."  This declaration included signing paperwork, holding a small ceremony on the playground, and baking celebratory whoopie pies in my kitchen.

I shook my head and asked "Can't I just buy you heart shaped bff necklaces like normal kids?"

In a completely unrelated story, let me share with you the wonder and beauty of what I am currently knitting.

Photobucket

I am officially in love with knitting once again!

This is the start of my latest knitting project.

It isn't the picture this project deserves.  It should be a better picture, with my current progress. But it is already dark outside, and I am too lazy to try to get a good picture in the bad overhead lighting.  Maybe tomorrow next week.

This is the start of my Cowl.

What cowl you might ask.

Why my BFF Cowl of course.

When I first saw the pattern I knew it was something I NEEDED to knit with my dear friend from Here In Topeka.

One quick message asking if this would be something she would like to do and the next thing I knew I had two skeins of the most luscious red yarn sitting on my doorstep.

I think that was a yes, she will be my Knitting BFF FOREVER!

Does this mean we're "knarried"?

Unfocused

You know, it really is shameful how I treat you dear blog.

For a while there I was giving constant updates on my owl socks, frequent pictures of my purple sweater.  And just when I was in the groove and you were checking my blog daily *WHAM* I hit you with radio silence for weeks.  With no explanation.

Cause that's just how I roll.

Where did it all go wrong you might wonder.  Why do I so frequently abandon you?

Often I don't know.

Often I'm just not feeling it.

And when you're not feeling it there really is nothing you can do.

But in this case I can tell you exactly where it all went wrong.

It all fell apart for the lack of a size 9 needle.

I have been knitting a very long time.  I've been blogging since 2005 (oh that makes me feel old), and knitting even longer (oh that makes me feel even older).  Through the years I have amassed a fairly large collection of needles and do-dads.  Some useful, some only useful in theory.  All fun.

I have straight needles in every size, circulars (addis and others), metal, plastic, wood, bamboo (which is also a kind of wood, but trust me, it is different and deserves a mention of its very own).  I have a gallon size zip lock bag of different kinds and sizes of dpns.  I have crochet hooks stashed all over the house cause you never know when you  might need a crochet hook.  All these knitting tools that beginner me with my one pair of size 8 straight needles could only dream of.

All these tools of the trade and I only own one size 9 circular needle.

And it isn't even a good size 9 needle.

It is a Boye size 9 needle with the world's most inflexible cord that I bought at Wal Mart.

I hate this needle.

True Story.

And I don't own any size 9 dpns.

An entire gallon size ziplock bag of dpns, and no size 9s.

Not a single one.

Since I have been knitting longer than I care to admit and I've gotten along just fine without them for this long, one might think that a size 9 needle is relatively unimportant.

And it is.

Until you need one.

And then a second size 9 circular needle or set of size 9 double pointed needles becomes everything.

Remember my beautiful purple sweater.

Photobucket

Yes this purple sweater.  The one I knit and frogged, and knit and frogged, and knit and possibly frogged and knit again.  Yeah, that one.

I knit the entire body

Photobucket

Ta-Da!

And then I discovered I only own the one pair of size 9 circular needles that I had been using to knit the body of my pretty purple sweater.

Da Da Dunnnnnnnnnnnnn

Enter tragedy stage left.

The sleeves are knit in the round.  The stitches are picked up from the armscye (i.e. the arm hole) and knit down from there.  The cord on my cruddy circular needles is too stiff to magic loop the sleeves, or use traveling loop.  Lacking a second circular needle I could not knit the sleeves with two circular needles.  Lacking size 9 dpns I could not knit my sleeves with dpns.

In short I could not knit the sleeves.

I told myself I could just wait for payday and buy a new set of needles then.

In the meantime I didn't know what to do with myself.

I knit my Knit Picks project.  (no pictures it is Super Duper Top Secret (tm))

I knit the body of a Miette,

Photobucket

And then I lost interest.

I knit a Capucine

Photobucket

But I'm not sure I like it, so I haven't finished it. I bet I would like it more if I blocked it. But I'm just not interested in blocking it.

I've knit the entire body of a very hard to photograph Flaming June.  Twice.

I didn't like the fabric the first time

Photobucket

So I frogged and tried again with the yarn held double.

Photobucket

Again, not sure I love it, so I've lost interest in knitting any further on it.

For the love of all that is good I just need to finish a knitting project!  Like a petulant child if I can't knit what I wanna knit I don't wanna knit anything.

Don't worry.

I got my groove back.

And it didn't even involve another crummy size 9 circular Wal Mart needle.  I still haven't bought my second crummy size 9 circular Wal Mart needle yet

But alas, this post is already long and photo heavy.

You will have to wait until tomorrow who am I kidding, next month, to hear how I remembered that I love knitting.

Day Dreaming

I'm sitting on the couch with Sweet Pea.  It is an hour until bedtime.  She is so tired she is mumbling her words.  She can not gather the strength to speak in a big girl voice.  She keeps asking if it is bedtime yet.  She is ready for sleep.  I have offered to put my sleepy child in bed.  But she refuses to go until her "friends" go to bed too.  She is firm in her resolution to not be the only child going to bed.  Even if she can barely keep her eyes open.  The Greatest is pretty sure she gets that stubborn streak from me.  I will argue until my dying breath that I am not stubborn and it must come from his gene pool.

Having typed that sentence I'm realizing realizing he may have a point.

But since he doesn't read my blog he will never ever know I admitted just this once that he might be right. Bear in mind that admitting he MIGHT be right is not the same thing as admitting he IS right. Embrace the difference.

I spent a large portion of my weekend sitting in my living room knitting.  A KnitPicks deadline looms.  Color work and cables, I was so busy knitting that I couldn't go to knitting group this weekend.  How messed up is that?

Usually I knit in the family room where the tv is. I loves to knit with my tv. Makes me feel all productive and stuff, when I'm really just rotting my brain. But this weekend I could not resist the twinkly lights of the tree. I had to be near it. As I sat in my living room, knitting by the tree, I felt a little like I was smack dab in the middle of a Tim Burton movie.

Photobucket

Does this mean Halloween is going to stage another hostile take over of Christmas?

Photobucket

Is it possible that Elanor and Lt. Dangle climb out of my yarn cabinet and have adventure in the night?

Photobucket
Perhaps they dance with my ghosts in a sweeping musical number?

Photobucket
My happy rocks could sing in the chorus.

Photobucket
But I would watch out for the ravens.  I have a feeling they are up to no good.

What's In A Name?

Photobucket

It has occurred to me that calling it "The Great Tree Erection of 2012" just doesn't sound, um,  appropriate?  And there will probably be a lot of disappointed google hits just from my typing that sentence.  Hi disappointed people *waves*

So, yeah, that's not what we are calling it.  I'm going to go with "The Lighting of the Tree 2012".  The  Lighting of the Tree 2012 took three days.  But it was worth all the hard work The Greatest put into it, and all the time I put in sitting on the couch telling him what a good job he was doing.  Hey, being someone's personal cheerleader is harder than it sounds.  The constant stroking of an ego can wear on one's nerves.  I've decided I want a personal cheerleader.  Someone to sit beside me and chant "Knit Mamma Knit!"  Someone to exclaim "Wow, those purl stitches are so nice and even."  Someone to tell me to keep going when my wrists hurt "You can do it, only four more rounds to go, don't give up now!"  Triumphant fist bumps and "You knit the h*@% out of that sweater" when I finish a project.  That would be pretty awesome.

I'm just saying.

And to bring this back on topic:  Would you like to see my tree?

I thought you might.

Photobucket

TA-DA!!!

I told you it was a mother of a tree!

I flov-ah it!

The kids are all confused because we have Halloween decorations, Fall decorations (which mean Thanksgiving, or so I'm told) and a Christmas Tree all in the same room.

I've told them to be quiet and just roll with it.

Just.Roll.With.It.

Look at me giving my kids valuable advice that will carry them through their entire lives.

Just Roll With It...

Is there some slacker Mom award I can win?  I'd like a slacker Mom award.  Especially if it comes with its own personal cheerleader.

In knitting new I am sad to say that I was bested by simple arithmetic.

I have six skeins of Berroco Vintage that I am attempting to knit a sweater with.   The sweater was knit from the bottom up in one piece, then divided into front/back sections at the sleeves.  As I attached the fourth ball and knit I realized I had yet to reach the sleeve divide.  That left me with three balls to knit the entire bodice, two long sleeves, two pockets, a belt, and the upper shawl collar.  I'm expecting to use two balls on the sleeves alone, possibly two and a fourth.  This math just doesn't add up.

It doesn't matter how fast I knit, I was not going to be able to out knit this yarn.

But look how cute my bobbles were.

Photobucket

And I usually don't appreciate bobble.

Armed with my math research we took a dip in the frog pond and then I decided to do what I should have done in the beginning.  I cast on with larger needles, for a less tightly knit fabric.  I've cast on a number between the xs and s size, which, with  my gauge, should give me a m size.

I used to knit so fearlessly.  Laughing in the face of the pattern gauge.  Working my own math to make my yarn work for a sweater.  With a measuring tape and a calculator there was nothing I couldn't knit.  When did I start following patterns so blindly?

Photobucket

Here's to boldly knitting as no knitter has knit before!

O Christmas Tree

So Monday The Greatest decided it was time to return to his wood shop.  During the summer, in the 115+ degree heat it is too hot to be in the garage.  Hanging out there for more than ten minutes is a recipe for heat stroke.  He works with a lathe making beautiful hand turned items, but even if he had wanted to hydrate and brave the death trap that is the garage, the wood could not take the stress.  It cracked and splintered with the friction of his tools.  It was simply too hot.

Oh the joys of living in the desert.

But our temperatures are down. Finally.  Mid nineties last week.  Upper eighties this week.  It was time to return to the garage.  Time to create.  Time to do something he enjoyed for a change instead of all the things he has to do.

There was just one little snag.

Over the summer I acquired the most awesomest of awesome free cycle scores.  A 12 foot pre-lighted Christmas Tree.  This is no tall, skinny tree.  This is the mother of all 12 foot Christmas trees.  When I went to pick it up I had Sweet Pea with me, and our Expedition was nothing but tree.  Tree in the back blocking my rear view mirror. Tree on the floor.  Tree in the seats.  Tree in the front passenger seat blocking my view of all traffic from the right.  Nothing but tree.  And her sweet little face peering between the branches.

I should have taken a picture.

Oh, the missed photo ops.

This tree is ginormous.  I brought it home and realized I have no place to store a tree of this magnitude. My house lacks a basement.  Which is so stupid.  Basements are really useful.  I think there might be an attic, but I'm scared of attics.  And even if I didn't have my great fear of attics, I don't know where the entrance to the attic is.  In my defense I don't know where the entrance is because I'm scared of the potential attic in my house, so I've never bothered to learn how to access that death trap in the ceiling, if said attic even exists.  (Yes, my house does appear to be full of death traps.  No wonder nobody wants to come visit.)We keep the holiday decorations in my craft closet, and that puppy is already filled beyond capacity.

Whats a girl to do?

Enter the unused portion of the garage that is his wood working studio stage left.

Hey, if I can share my craft closet with ALL the holiday decorations he can share his wood working studio with one measly Christmas tree right?

Yeah, no.

Not unless I want the entire tree covered in sawdust.

Knitting, with its quiet needles, and lack of sawdust is a vastly superior past time compare to his wood working with the loud power tools (which carry the potential for serious bodily injury and/or death) and sawdust.

I'm just saying.

So lacking a place to put this ginormous, mother of all Christmas trees, we decided to just go ahead and put it up.

Photobucket

Why not.

The Greatest began Monday afternoon.  He thought it would be an evening's worth of work, but it would be worth it to have his space back.

Here's how it looked when he stopped at about ten pm last night.

Photobucket

We are currently on day three of Erecting The Tree 2012.

This tree needed some love.  All those pre-lit lights?

Yeah, no.

Not a single strand worked when we plugged it in.

The Greatest happens to be a little ocd about his Christmas lights.

I'm not gonna lie.  The man is the Christmas Light Whisperer.

He has carefully gone over every strand.  Replaced every burnt out bulb.  Lovingly fluffed every smushed branch.

I think he was Father Christmas in a former life.

Five-ish feet done.

Seven-ish to go.

I on the other hand have sat on the couch and watched him.  I've lended a hand when needed, but mostly the great Christmas Light Whisperer wants to work alone.  So I've stayed out of his way and I've knit my sweater.

Photobucket

I don't think I have enough yarn to actually finish this sweater.  I am knitting a size larger than the pattern suggests because I want some positive ease.  If I knit my actual size instead of the larger size I would probably have enough yarn.  I also think if I went up a needles size and down a pattern size I would end up with a fabric I like better (this fabric is pretty dense) and have enough yarn to finish this sweater.

But I can't stop knitting it.

I don't understand it.  I have no aversion to frogging.  I've already frogged this yarn from two other nearly completed sweater patterns.  Fear of frogging isn't the problem.  But I can't stop.  I'm obsessive.  I'm on this collision course of knitting disaster and I just have to see how it all plays out.  Can I knit fast enough to knit the sweater before the yarn runs out?

The answer is pretty much no.

But I can't stop.

I might need help.

Send chocolate.

Or more yarn.

I managed to keep the children alive too!  Regular feeding and all that stuff.

All in all, not a bad weekend.

I Love The Man But...

The Greatest and I had a wonderful time at dinner the other night.

We went to the most romantic Mexican restaurant.

Alright stop laughing.

As I pointed out to The Greatest, there is no such thing as a romantic Mexican restaurant.

Simply doesn't exist.

No room for drippy mood setting candles when you've got salsa and a big basket of hot  greasy tortilla chips taking up the table top.  Dining on refried beans and all those raw onions in the pico de gallo just don't make you feel like kissing.  Bloat inducing deep fried burritos will never be viewed as sexy couple food.  But seeing how it was his birthday he got to choose the restaurant.  And if truth be told, this little hole in the wall Mexican restaurant is my favorite place to eat too, so it's all good.

We sat by the window and got to watch the tweakers come and go from the liquor store across the street.  Being married to a cop means you get lectures on how to spot the signs of who is actively using, and who is just hung over.

Romantic.

I found it amusing that the liquor store also sells hot coffee.  Wonder how much business that brings in.  It might be more than you think because they've taken the time to install a neon sign proclaiming that they sell hot coffee.  You never can tell about these things.

See.  Romance was in the air.

We marked the occasion with a photo.

Photobucket

I didn't say it was a good photo, but it is a photo.  I've got to teach my 12 year old to work a camera properly.

After our date we cuddled up on the couch and I decided it was time for the man to pick a knitting pattern so I could knit him a sweater.  I thought with the Ravelry data base, surely the man would be able to find something he liked.

I thought wrong.

Using the pattern search I put in pullover (because he doesn't like cardigans), has photo, knitting, exclude purchase in print (for ease of getting my hands on the pattern)adult, and male.

Ravelry spit out seventeen pages of pattern suggestions.  Five hundred and eighty patterns.

FIVE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY PATTERNS PEOPLE!

Yet, tragically, the Greatest was unable to find a single pattern that perfectly replicates the sweater his deceased Grandmother bought him for Christmas 12 years ago.

And he couldn't pick a different sweater because that is just crazy talk.

That sound?

That rhythmic pounding sound?

Don't be alarmed.  That's just me pounding my head against the wall.

I've decided the man does not deserve to have me knit a sweater for him.

DOES NOT DESERVE IT!

No Weasley sweater for The Greatest this year.  Or Ever.  NEVER EVER PEOPLE.

In other knitting news, I didn't get any work done on my socks Wednesday.

I made up for it Thursday.

Random Things

It is sad, but my kids are getting to big to provide good blog fodder anymore.  They are out of the toddler stage where they make cute/infuriating messes with ordinary house hold items (anyone remember the industrial size can of shaving gel?  *shudder*  I do).  Normal messy bedrooms can only be talked about so many times (I think I'm going on four instances in the past month, I'm really pushing the limit).  I also suspect that they are now at an age where putting their embarrassing misdeeds on the internet for the world to see is probably a form of child abuse.  At the very least it is a credible reason for seeking professional therapy, and I simply can't afford to put a Psychologist's child through college.  I'm still figuring out how to put my own four children through college (I'm thinking scholarships For The WIN!).  But every once in a while a child does something so cute, so sweet, so funny, I can't resist.

I proudly present to you my son's math homework.

Now before you point it out, I am aware that number 15 is wrong.  This was his first pass at his homework.  He gives it to me to check and then I send him back to the table to fix the ones he got wrong.  He's not technically wrong on that last one.  But I don't think it was what they were looking for.  I made him try it again.

Between grading homework, and making dinner, and life in general, I managed to sneak in another row of owls yesterday.

I love those pretty little owls.  I'm very tempted to knit an Owl Sweater.  And I'm nearly consumed with the idea of making an Owl Obsession.  Never mind the fact that I don't really crochet.  I have a working knowledge of how to crochet, but I would call my crochet skills slightly short of adequate at best.  The pattern says it can be done by a dedicated beginner.  How dedicated am I?

In a related note, today is The Greatest's birthday.

Is that man handsome or what!  (He humors me and my camera so)  I will spare him the indignity of telling everyone how old he is.  But I do want everyone to remember, as they're looking at this picture of him with his super sexy grey hair, that I am MUCH younger than he is.  MUCH younger.  Practically a baby by comparison.

We're gonna go out to dinner.

WITHOUT THE CHILDREN!  (which is truly a blog worthy event, and a rare enough occasion that it needs to be written down for posterity.  How else will future generations know when to honor the occasion and celebrate The Great Childless Dinner of 2012?)

I wonder if he'd mind if I fit in a few more owls while we sat at the restaurant waiting to be served?

I am addicted to knitting these tiny owls.  I don't want to clean, or cook, or knit my knitpicks project.  I just wanna create tiny owls with sparkly eyes all day long.
